All, First the Dogs of War Campaign Development Team would like to thank all of you who downloaded both campaigns in the Eagle Dynamics Campaign Development contest. Also, thanks for the feedback and questions on the Dogs of War Campaign. We would also like to thank Eagle Dynamics for sponsoring the contest and the fantastic (and very generous) prizes.     We are also pleased to announce Revision 1 to the Dogs of War Campaign. :):) This update can be downloaded from http://rapidshare.com/files/360312125/Dog_of_War_Campaign_Rev_1_0.zip The zip file contains all the updated missions and a document describing the campaign background and missions. There are two versions of this PDF file, one is for duplex printing and the other is for printing on one side only. (Attached below) A descriptions of what has been incorporated into Revision 1 is described below, as well as an updated Campaign Background Description Good luck in the campaing. We hope that you enjoy. Please post any feedback as a response to this message. Development Team AKA_Clutter AKA_Ramstein Topgun505 AKA_Goshawk == == == == == == == == == == == == Update Campaign Background == == == == == == == == == == == == Campaign Background In May 2008 the Indian Air Force issued a requisition proposal to purchase 22 attack helicopters to modernize and supplement their close support attack forces. Shortly thereafter this request was put on hold due to budget cuts. In November of the same year a coordinated Islamic terrorist attack in Mumbai, India’s largest city, killed 173 people and wounded at least 308. The initial speculation was the attacks originated from Pakistan. After less than 3 months of investigation Pakistan's Interior Minister Rehman Malik, in a televised news briefing, confirmed that parts of the attack had been planned in Pakistan and said that six people, including the alleged mastermind, were being held in connection with the attacks. Additional funding was immediately granted by India’s government to purchase additional air assets to improve border security and to seek and destroy militant elements along the border between Pakistan and India. Throughout 2009 U.S. forces increased their presence in both Afghanistan and Pakistan in an attempt to eliminate extremist forces at the same time India waged a similar war along their border. In Dec 2009 the American government offered military and economic incentives to India in order to improve their military and increase their effectiveness in combating terrorist forces along their border and (unofficially) into Pakistan itself. Part of this incentive package was an exchange of military technologies. India received, among other things, several UAV assets and thermal imaging devices for use for border patrols. During the course of 2010, India's use of UAV drone attacks against militant targets within Pakistan escalated dramatically. With its new UAV fleet, India more freely engaged targets as they were discovered. Several of these raids were conducted with questionable intelligence and as a result lead to hundreds of innocent civilian casualties. The Pakistani government who had always publicly outraged against such drone attacks previously, but had never taken any action to oppose them, came under increasing pressure from its civilian population to put an end to these attacks. As the attacks continued and civilian casualties mounted, al-Qaeda began to win over public support within the country. By mid 2010, al-Qaeda had enough support from the civilian population and the Pakistani military that they were able to conduct a successful coup and depose the existing Pakistani government. U.N. leaders, terrified of the prospect of al-Qaeda now being in possession of a nuclear power sent in troops led primarily by the United States to free control of Pakistan and to ensure the security of its nuclear arsenal. India, realizing the gravity of the situation and recognizing the superior training of U.S. armed forces decide to allow them access to their KA-50 assets in order to both assist in combat operations and to help train the Indian Air Force in the use of their new attack helicopters. At this time, while a few scattered regions within Pakistan still oppose al-Qaeda occupation, the country for the most part is now entirely controlled by al-Qaeda and its military forces are being bolstered daily by extremists flowing in to the country from Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Iran, and other terrorist-backing nations. A state of war (although not yet officially declared) now exists between al-Qaeda-controlled Pakistan and the United States (and other U.N. nations). == == == == == == == == == == == == Revision 1 Changes 1) Updated Dogs of War Campaign Background Document (this document) to add maps for each mission. 2) Developed a better Overview map 3) Revised naming scheme from “Campaign_xx” to “DoW_Mission_xx” 4) Made editorial corrections to all mission briefings. 5) Added New Phase 0 a) New Into mission – Land on carrier and ingress to FARP west of Anapa airfield. b) New Mission 00A – See description below 6) Linked Missions 00, 0A, 01, 02, and 03 (Phases 0 & 1) 7) Corrected some errors in Missions 1-6, 12, and 15 associated with random generation elements. 8 ) Developed Introduction Mission - Campaign_0A a) Land on carrier to refuel and rearm. This is necessary to prevent multiple “Down Pilots” being simulated. 15) Corrections to DoW_Mission 7B Early Morning Raid - With Wingman a) Moved Flights to FARPs next to airfield. This was done to facilitate takeoff with wingmen. 16) Corrections to DoW_Mission 12 (Death Valley) a) Added a second convey on road. b) Revised timing of units spawning to close valley entrance c) Added additional units to protect against flying over the rim of the valley d) Added some units hidden in a branch valley to provide an obstacle to overcome. This led to two version; “Challenge” and “Easy”. The Challenge version has Shilka ZSU-23-4’s and Strela 9P3’s in the branch valley. The Easy version has BTR-80s instead. e) Revised Alpha 4 to start on ramp and skin and weapon load-out. f) Added additional logic and bunkers to improve the randomness of the mission. Number of potential bunker locations increased from 2 to 5. 17) Corrections to DoW_Mission 15 Mop Up a) Revised logic for downed pilots to correct error of all three down pilots being generated. In linking the missions, we decided to put a little bit of randomness into which mission was loaded. Specifically we included the possibility that your efforts might be overcome by events elsewhere. There is a possibility that if you were successful, events elsewhere in the theater of war results in the campaign moving forward staying in the same phase, or moving back one phase. The same is true for when the mission is a stalemate (draw) or a failure. == == == == == == == == == == == == Again, this update can be downloaded from http://rapidshare.com/files/360312125/Dog_of_War_Campaign_Rev_1_0.zip We hope that you enjoy the campaign. My pc has got a new internal heart so i reinstalled lock on up to FC 1,12B. Fired it up to kick ass in the A-10, which i missed for two weeks (had problems with the oc temp of the I7860 on 4,2 ghz). Everything fine but...no working trackir...mmm... FS9 + Tir was okay, so...lock on problem? Tried and tried until i got angry. Deinstalled Lock On completly and started from scratch. Still nada..weird. I made tir profiles and did everything. Still nothing. Reinstalled everything again(!) and i was becomming desperate. Finally i went to this forum and suddenly i remembered. I had to delete the Trackir.cfg AAAAAAAHHHH. What can i say: S..t happens:D1 point

I'm no expert, but in fact DCS has multiple threads (at least according to resource monitor), tho it just uses two cores in Vista or W7, because it's not realy multithreaded optimized application. I suppose it's not because DCS itself, but because SO management (directx, etc. dunno really). The thing is, when going from affinity 1 core to 2 cores it gains around 50% more fps (Vista or W7, not in XP). Going from affinity 2 cores to more cores it doesen't increase fps at all. There are many test here and there in the forums. PD: that line from the FAQ "You can try manually setting the core affinity for DCS to all of the CPU cores, which may boost your game performance. To do this, Alt-Tab out of a running mission, set the CPU affinity for DCS and Alt-Tab back in. You will have to do this every time you run the sim.", forget it, patch 1.01 fixed that.1 point

Hi, AFAIK, no. Depends on the game language, but yes. ;) The hardcopy manual contains a few sections that are not in the pdf version that comes with the game, like emergency procedures. No drivers, no problem. :)1 point

I see. Keep in mind that NCTR in AN/APG-63 is pretty old technology. There are improvements, and a more modern radar can do it better and faster. But also keep in mind that we know little to nothing about RL effectiveness of NCTR - notice that pilots never or almost never mention it in their reports ... it is secret, even the symbols it uses are secret.1 point

Here's some thoughts for schkorpios question about simple exercises. First some motivational words for people who don't think this is important. From a psychology standpoint, simple exercises that focus only on a small part of the task are the most effective and fastest way to learn. You can't consciously focus on many tasks at once, but unconsciously you can focus on a lot of things. The trick to get some task to be handled unconsciously is practice, repetitive practice. Think about driving a car. I have read, that people might have to do something like 20 things (mentally) all at the same time while driving a car in a busy traffic on a unknown road. It would be impossible to survive it if you had to do all that you do consciously. A person who has never driven a car would be a good example what would happen as he just can't follow everything and do everything that's required. If you try to focus on too many new things at once you can't focus on anything. In order to learn effectively and fast you need to focus. If your ability to focus on one thing is taken away your learning ability will diminish. For example, I have found through personal experience that I learn most when playing against people with lesser skills than against superior skills. When playing against noobs, I have time to think what I do and if I make a mistake, I have time to see it and learn from it. Against pros I just die quickly and never have the opportunity to see what I do wrong except that I keep dying. You can learn new tricks and stuff by analyzing how you got owned but as a way of practice its not good. Other important thing besides focus is observation or feedback. You need to see if what you are doing is bringing results that you are after. First you need to have some idea of what you want to accomplish, preferably a very exact idea. That way you have some yardstick that you can use to measure your performance. Other thing is to analyze your performance thoroughly. More mental effort you put in practice, faster you learn. Now you can see that if you just jump straight into combat there's so much things to focus on and analyze and see that you will be overwhelmed. I don't mean that you can't survive the mission but that you will spend a long time flying and learning very little. But there's still one other aspect to learning that's some ways contrary to previous statements but is still important piece of the puzzle. In order to focus and observe you need to direct your attention and usually it gets directed into interesting things. What follows, is that you need to keep training interesting and simple exercises tend to be a bit boring. Just doing simple exercises until you have fully learned everything might be effective way to learn if you can keep your attention to the task but I can't. When I start to get bored and lose concentration, I fly combat missions. That way I can get reinforcing feedback when I can see that my combat effectiveness has improved and practice has paid off. I can also see new things that I need to work on. OK, now to the answer. :D This post is a bit of a transcription of my thoughts so I can stay somewhat organized, sorry for that. I haven't really thoroughly thought about this and tried to task-analyze piloting combat helicopters but here's my .02c. Maybe someone has access to a real scientist made task-analysis from military or maybe they are classified? Here's the rough sketch. -Flying -Operating sensors, weapons, radios, etc. equipment -Keeping up situational awareness, looking around, listening to radio traffic, thinking about what's going on, what will happen, etc. -Planning ahead For flying and operating equipment it's pretty easy to devise some exercises but SA and planning need to be learned the hard way, through combat missions. At least I can't figure out how I would isolate and replicate the SA and planning problems any other way. So lets task-analyze flying and equipment operation: Flying: -keeping straight flight -coordinated turn -break turn -slowing down -quick stop -quick descent -maximum acceleration -hovering -flying sideways and backwards -precision hover landing -rolling landing -autorotation -maneuvering at high altitude and not hitting a mountain -instrument flying -navigation -OK, can't think of more, please help. Operating equipment and weapons: -Basically everything that you can do with every equipment (read the manual) So here's some kind of list of small things you could practice. The point is to practice this stuff so much as that you don't need to think about it anymore. I don't think it's necessary for me to give any more specific examples of what to do to practice these things? I'm hungry for thinking and typing so I have to quit for now anyway.1 point

COMMON PROCEDURE: Navigating in AIR FIELD Task Mode with Route Switch On 1. Illuminate AIR FIELD task light on the PVI-800 panel. 2. Select point number of task point desired (1 is departing airfield, 2 is arriving airfield if different from one.) 3. Place DH/DT switch in position DH or position DT, behavior is the same. 4. Move route-descent switch to ROUTE position to engage autopilot behavior. COMMON PROCEDURE: Navigating in NAV TGT Task Mode with Route Switch On 1. Illuminate NAV TGT task light on the PVI-800 panel. 2. Select point number of task point desired (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 0) 3. Place DH/DT switch in position DH or position DT, behavior is the same. 4. Move route-descent switch to ROUTE position to engage autopilot behavior. COMMON PROCEDURE: Navigating in WPT Task Mode with Route Switch On 1. Illuminate WPT task light on the PVI-800 panel. 2. Select point number of task point desired (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6) OPTION 3a. Place DH/DT switch in position DH to travel point directly to each task point. 3b. Place DH/DT switch in position DT to travel along route lines between points 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, and 5-6. 4. Move route-descent switch to ROUTE position to engage autopilot behavior. Note: WPT Task Mode with Route Switch On is the only task mode that will automatically change the task point to the next; 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, 4 to 5, and 5 to 6. After task point 6 the autopilot will fly in a straight line. Note: Any of the above procedures with the route-descent switch in the OFF position will give visual HSI, ADI, and HUD navigation cues but the autopilot will not attempt to fly the helicopter to the task point. Instead it will be the pilot's job to follow the visual indications.1 point
