  1. I disagree. IMO, Lock On has been the best there is as far as multiplayer air combat simulation goes for a long time. Sure, there's Falcon 4, but my god it's complicated. Falcon 4 is, no joking, like flying a real jet. It's that complicated. And how many people have the time to learn a real jet when they're not getting paid for it? Not many. The fact is that the MEAT and the reason COMBAT simmers come to any combat sim is in the action. Lock On gives you the choice to fly the best of the worlds air-air fighters and CAS aircraft, and skips over 90% of the individual avionics modelling in order to provide you the best feel of air combat. Ideally the devs would like to give you the 100% solution of perfectly realistic avionics and flight models for all jets, but it's not doable. They wanted to give you the chance to fly essentially 5 types of aircraft with as realistic flight model and weapons as they could provide, so they gave you the 80% solution of simple flight model and simplified but as close as reasonably practical avionics. And it works. Sure, we don;t have all xxxx modes of the radar in the Eagle, or a clickable cockpit for the radar modes in the Russian jets, but it's close. It's not novalogic F-22 style, or Tom Clancy Hawx. You can achieve a realistic feel of air combat in lock on, if you make the appropriate mission. Ka-50 guys, much like Falcon 4 guys, love the in depth simulation of the platform, getting into the start procedures etc, but most of us just don't have the time for it while working a full time job. Not to mention you don't have the back up of proper instruction like a full time pilot in training does...it's all self taught, which takes even more time. The average Lock On guy wants to enjoy his 1 hr a day of free sim time doing the business...killing bad guys. Taking 60 minutes to properly brief a mission, another 60 to get the platform fired up, taxi out, etc, only to get killed after 10min airborne because, guess what, you're in a high threat environment, is no fun. That's why for real, military aviators continue the mission even after they are dead in order to gain experience. You can't do that in an online sim...if you die you are dead. And thats why military aviators spend 50 hours a week doing that job. Who's got 50 hours a week to sim? Almost no one. Lock On is a compromise. There are definitely some things the devs can improve on. But how much difference would an advanced flight model for an F-15C really make a difference? 5% of the time? It's not worth it. Put the effort into making the SFM as close to realistic as practical, making the weapons as close to realistic as practical, and give us the chance to fly the best jets in the western and eastern world. We, the community, will make the scenarios and make it fun online. We'll airquake during the week and once every 2 months or so we'll do a Red Flag with some realistic scenarios. If you get sick of airquake, join a squad that trains weekly. This gives us all the flexibility to fly in the same game in a good differential of aircraft, and funds the devs to further develop the platforms they wish to (KA50, A-10). A single platform game (ala Janes F-18, and as you suggest, DCS A-10) will not satisfy everyone (I want to do air-air). At the end of the day, in the vain of fairness, in all my hours flying airquake online, I've only ever ONCE found a freaken KA-50. You guys fly too slow for our radars anyway. We need diversity in order to keep us all flying the same sim, so that we can pool our money into the devs coffers to build us all what we want in the future.

Eagle Dynamics.

  3. Two Croatian MiG-21bis jets collided in mid air during this morning training, one of the pilots managed to eject but the faith of the other fella is yet unknown. Link to newsflash (in croatian language): http://danas.net.hr/crna-kronika/page/2010/09/23/0399006.html?pos=n0

  5. Turned into a right shutter-bug today at the show and thought I'd post a select few shots. Will add more later when I've sifted through them properly. Enjoy :) Battle of Britain Memorial Flight

  6. A robust (my favorite word) solution: Fact: Currently tracks can be played fast forward using time compression without problems. The simplest solution: Enable FFWD to a certain time (manual input) Expected behavior: Track is being 'played' in maximum safe time acceleration with rendering disabled (blank screen or rough ETA value). At reaching the desired time rendering (display) is re-enabled. Second solution: FFWD and RWD (<< and >>) Expected behavior: Same as above but for RWD - track playback is being re-started and FWD-ed to the desired time. Display re-enabled same as in previous case. This seems so robust to me that I could bet it can be done with scripting only (no code modifications).

  8. Personally, if it were me and I was looking for the most programable Joystick / HOTAS on the planet, I'd go with CH Products.

  9. Ok so back to DX9c with Shader 3.0 Support. Shame really as DX11 is the way to go with 3D high quality texture modelling, understand your reasons however, anyway moving on... So 2 questions which should be fairly easy to answer now :- 1) Does a10c utilise DX9c multi-threaded resource handling ? 2) What kind of frame rates can we expect with ALL options enabled at MAX/FULL? I know this is PC specific but you must have run some tests so quote Spec and frame rates. Ballpark figures are also fine. I have this niggling feeling that the late move to DX11 was due to frame rates. I have to lol, all of the praise for reverting back to dx9 will quickly turn to discontent when the same ppl realise they can't run it at max eye candy levels.

  10. :megalol: Been pondering something similar: Dawdling about at Angels 30 and spotting a Shark hovering between buildings seeking cover/lying in ambush. Drop a JDAM, Split-S and beat the JDAM down, give it about ten or so seconds to impact and then slowly saunter past the Shark, taking special care to wave seconds before impact while he frantically struggles about lining up a cannon/vikhr firing solution in an attempt to teach the Hog-driver a lesson in humility :D

  11. Attention Bobbero, this is the post by Grimes :D I will always maintain and believe that FC2 levels of realism are a necessity in the flight sim market. Some might say its a necessary evil, others look at it as a "stepping stone" of sorts to bigger better things, while others ignore and dislike it. Honestly we need these sort of games. Hell I bought black shark (and will likely get A10C) because of LockOn.... which I got because of flying around in Battlefield 2.... which I enjoyed so much because I bought a joystick for Mech Warrior 4. When you think about it DCS:BS kinda dropped the ball on the transition between "arcade" and "simulation" modes. Although I never gave the arcade features much of a try, but if I remember it was literally... - Pure Game (A Third Person shooter) - Game Avionics, Sim FM (3rd person shooter but harder to fly) - Game simulation, Sim Avionics (Easy to fly, but full sim pit) - Full Sim. There were a few other options you can turn on and off, but from a pure "pit to pit" DCS Black Shark was either way less of a sim than FC2 or much much more of a sim. There was no middle ground where you can look at both games and say "yeah, they are about equal in difficulty." I would love to see a "DCS: Lite" to be released that features all of the world and editor features of a normal DCS game, but with some weird sick hybrid of FC2 and DCS for the flight model and cockpit avionics. Hell if we got the new A-10 editor features in FC2 we would have multiplayer scenarios that the DCS guys would be jealous of. Obviously there are implications of allowing the "simming is serious business" crowd and... well everyone else, into the same servers and game. We have that problem now-a-days, put up a public co-op and its "join in progress" its probably going to be rather disorganized. Play the same mission in a passworded server with a set start time and briefing, the mission will play out differently. I suppose it really doesn't matter much if DCS quality airframes share the same airspace as something of less quality if the players are communicating and being realistic in their tactics. In my book the only deciding factor would be if player to player interactions or combat suffered between "DCS: Pure" and "DCS:Lite" as a direct result in something not being modeled correctly.

  12. This is why ED normally doesn't like to announce features before they're in. DX11 ended up being too time-consuming to add within the desired time-frame for the production of the A-10C. That's all. It wasn't just hype, they intended to make it happen.

  13. Just only to restore reality! - All pilots found. - One collected dead from sea. - The 2 others were rapidly medicated. - 1 of 2 left the hospital after some days with only a broken Leg. - The other one, had sustained multiple brakes on chest, his injuries were very severe. - After multiple surgery operations, and aprox 2 weeks later, he finally passed out.

  14. I'm in Ebay selling mode with my FSX stuff right now. FSX + Acceleration + numerous scenery addons. I’ve been through 3 PC upgrades since it came out and it still runs like crap. The money you have to spend and the effort you have to go through to get a nice FSX experience is absolutely disgraceful and the “out of the box” experience was very inadequate IMO. Saying, “it’s the mods that make it” doesn’t cut it in my book. Fair play to the people with patience and cash to tart it up, but the whole “no one flies the default aircraft” is another nail in an already very magnetic coffin. If its not the default planes or the default scenery or the default weather that people are paying for then what is the bloody point of FSX? The menus? You may as well buy C++ and make your own sim. There is room for a good civilian sim there and I will give XPlane10 a look, for the times when I’m not “going CAS on their ass” in DCS:A-10. Let’s hope the Xplane devs learn from the FSX debacle. Paid mods and add-ons are there to enrich and extend, not take the place of something that should have been there from the start.

  16. Could you explain a little more? Did you say a MI-8 flying trimmed at 150 kph, with no pilots on board, ran out of fuel and the helicopter with no pilots landed safely? That doesn't make any sense. A lot of things happens when the engines quit in a helicopter. It yaws and pitches. A trimmed collective position for straight and level flight would never allow an successful auto-rotative descent. Although, both engines are unlikely to flame-out at the exact same time, allowing one engine operation for descent. Not to mention the MI-8 has a high center of gravity making level touchdowns even more imperative. Most of the earths surface is rough and uneven with many obstacles. It would be extremely hard to do a roll-on landing in a wheeled helicopter in some farm field somewhere at 150 kph successfully with an expert pilot let alone a helicopter with no one at the controls. When you say "almost intact", did you mean the fuselage broke apart? Do you have any pictures by chance?

  17. I think you named the problem though. You're trying to change what the community -wants- to play. Not going to happen. You want the community to do it your way? Start training them, yep, including your secrets :) Don't wanna do it? See what I mean? We're not getting away from that so easy.

  18. Server stability is quite lacking within FC2. Loading and reloading a new mission several times is practically a guarantee the server will crash. This seems to be true for most missions. One night I tested the server by loading a new mission every few minutes, the most mission loads I got to without a crash was 5. I'm sure the mission itself has some effect on things, likely additional AI and server uptime are to be contributing factors. Within the 3Sqn server we rotate a mission purely by time or self triggered rotation. A mission does not reset itself once everyone leaves. I don't think pausing/unpausing would have a negative effect on mission load. I would recommend turning off the "if server empty reset" in servman. Anything to minimize server loading screens is highly recommended.

  19. That's a server management issue, not an aircraft issue. Reduced complexity isn't a cause of bad behavior in servers. Conversely, increased complexity doesn't in and of itself improve flying discipline.
