The slats have nothing to do with gun gas getting into the engines. As MTFDarkEagle said, the engine igniters are active while firing and a few seconds after. The slats have everything to do with the airflow into the engines during high AoA situations, as sobek said.

Another difference: the A-10 has two eject handles, one on each side, and the F-16 has one handle in the middle.

Can't you just look at the pitch ladder? EDIT: The pitch ladder will give you a rough idea. That combined with VVI, and AoA, and speed should give you enough information. If you want, you can shoot a glance down at the ADI, but I don't see that as necessary.
