is DCS a Ship Simulator and weapons systems Simulator only ?
trevoC replied to GOZR's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Your head clipping outside the aircraft is not an easy VR problem to fix. Many have tried different methods, but I personally prefer the solution ED has implemented which is allowing the head outside the cockpit. At first it may seem strange to allow you to do this, but preventing your head outside the cockpit is now in your hands... don't put your head outside the cockpit. Sims that try to limit this movement are worse IMO as there are so many different types of headsets and heads. I can't stand when they try to limit the movement as what will happen is you move your head to the side and all of a sudden your vision stops moving (as your vr head has hit their limit) but you are still moving your head. This doesn't seem right when in VR IMO and is worse than allowing a little clipping. This is very noticeable as your head might hit the limit long before your sight or eyes start clipping outside the cockpit. Imagine twisting your head left and looking down. As it is now, if the top of your head were to clip through the aircraft you wouldn't notice a thing as you are looking down at your controls, but if this was limited or preventing you from clipping through the aircraft, you would find many situations where you wouldn't even be able to see your left control panels as you do now without the helmet hitting the cockpit and your vision being stopped from moving while you are still moving your head. This would become frustrating very fast. Bottom line, if you don't want to clip outside the aircraft, stop moving your head outside the aircraft. -
What I find amusing about individuals who pretend to hold some moral high ground in this conversation is that the act of trying to insult me by stating "beaten by a girl" would only hold weight by someone who thought that getting beaten by a girl was somehow insulting. I'm not sure how any of these statements are relevant at all.

Nothing. I never said there was anything wrong with having a female copilot/WSO. you missed the point. I don't care the gender of the copilot or WSO. Had any developer made the default a female I wouldn't have thought twice about it until this post. My only point is that I think this topic is insignificant. That being said, I stand by my original point that a developer or studio or anyone else should not feel obligated to comply with the lowest common denominator which in this case I believe is female players. If I were to have to bet on those numbers, I'm guessing that they are statistically insignificant. From a developers standpoint (or any realist instead of some woke dreamer) a waste of time. That may sound harsh, but that is the reality. Its possible I'm wrong, in which case I would be truly interested in any data that supports an opposing opinion to this as I would find that truly fascinating that I was so completely off base.

That would be impossible. how exactly did I harass you? Please explain. We definitely agree on some things. I think you have either misinterpreted something I've said, or are reading into my comments with a tone that does not exist. Or the "fact" that DCS does not have a significant female base. Why would the above be your assumption? this comment is more toxic than anything I have said.

Just for reference (not that this is proof or indicative of how many women/girls play DCS, but it is a general indication of audience) which is all I have to go on, but more than you provided and lets be clear, I stated an opinion and expressed the idea that I may be wrong, you made a statement that would appear as fact. Here is a DCS video from my channel with 80,000 views: thats 80,000 to zero

why would I be joking? you claimed "There are quite a lot of women/girls flying at DCS". I'm sure you wouldn't make such a statement without some sort of information in regards to it. Personally, I doubt it, but I don't know this for a fact. If you do, I'd like to be shown otherwise. I'd consider it pretty interesting if that was fact. Where do you get the idea that there are "quite a lot of women/girls flying at DCS"?

If anyone else ends up here I found a simple solution. In Mission 03 when I get the call to RTB (Mission success) I just tell my wingman to RTB via the communication menu. Although we end up going to the same spot it puts enough separation between us to prevent the mishaps.

Maybe like Elite Dangerous we can pause development of the sim for 2 years and focus on a first person mode that allows you to exit your cockpit and walk around the plane and airport for a bit allowing us to completely customize our characters and lose focus completely on what the sim is about in the first place and then all come to the realization that this was a waste of time and that we'd much prefer any development resources to focus on the point of the simulator in the first place. Until this thread I had not given even a single moments thought to how similar the pilots may or may not have been to my likeness. Mostly because like other games I can imagine a first person experience however I like and secondly because they are all wearing helmets and suits. When it comes to the voices, if there was a want/need for a female WSO I'm sure a third party could fill it. As a developer myself I think this is a bad idea as I doubt it would have much interest. I doubt I could recover even my cost in modding. I also doubt that female players of DCS account for any significant numbers at all. I personally have never met one or heard of any online. Obviously I'm sure there are some but I highly doubt their numbers are statistically significant at all. I don't think any product or service should be persuaded to bend to the will of the lowest common denominator.

Just started this campaign and have no issues with Mission 01 and 02 except until the very end. Complete mission just fine, go in for a nice landing, all lined up and perfect approach... Wingman attempts to land with me in a seemingly random spot each time and basically right on top of me. First mission I was center line as I wasn't expecting this... he flew by me last second landing on the left of the runway and scaring the <profanity> out of me (last 50 feet or so of approach) With this in mind I figured ok... he's landing left so mission 02 I land to the right of the runway. Wingman at this time does the same thing except passes me last second and lands on the right of the runway (actually somewhat off the tarmac) making me have to land and immediately brake and steer to the left of the runway. Any tips on where I'm expected to land to prevent him from killing me. With luck, he didn't hit me either time but I don't want to play the entire campaign with landing anxiety each time. Any tips greatly appreciated.

I never thought of this before, but I've spent over 1,100 usd on DCS and have no issues connecting to the internet, but what if something happened in my area (some type of disaster) that brought down the internet. Yes, maybe DCS is the least of my issues, or maybe I find myself at home wanting to play DCS while society restores itself. Am I out of luck? If internet went down tomorrow is my DCS installation no good after three days?

Your CPU is most definitely not running at 20% utilization how you might think it is. You are looking at utilization across all cores. One of those cores has the DCS main thread and it is most likely limited by that core. DCS suffers as most games that can't utilize multi-cores well (which is most games btw, even the multi-threading games) by the main "loop" of the game that is trying to send instructions to the GPU which is usually doing them much faster than the CPU can send them. Programming out this behaviour of a main thread in your game is more difficult than most people think. I don't envy ED in this respect. I'm running a 5900x OC'd 20% and it is absolutely the limiting factor with my 3090 which can be as low as 50% (usually around 60%-90%) utilization.

Realize all of this in hindsight.... didn't at 2:30 am when I was by myself with a set of VR googles on and not realizing the noises were even DCS.

Also thought I was losing my mind. Recorded some of it.

Agreed. This can't seriously be anywhere near a priority for anyone... who cares, get us Multi threading and vulkan please...

I'm glad it wans't just me. I have to admit... it was kind of unsettling when I didn't know it was coming from DCS at first. I didn't even seem to record to creepiest stuff, but It will give you an idea of what I heard.

I don't know if this is in the 2.8x update only but I would have guessed that I would have noticed this before as I noticed it right away today. Started a cold and dark on the Ka-50 in Caucasus and hear them.. Ended up in an F-15C bear trap campaign mission and when I landed and opened the cockpit I heard them again. Decided to record it and post it. Anyone else here this. At times it sounds like a demonic like voice and there is a motorcycle or chainsaw and some laughing. Kind of unsettling. I only recorded a portion of it... like I said, theres someone who laughs at one point and a chainsaw sound that I guess didn't record. Its on a loop but a pretty long clip in DCS.

I'm running a 5900X Oc'd 20% with a 3090 and I can play VR just fine with high/extreme settings. What has enabled this is openXR with FFR. My test scenario is Huey on Marianas map (which is one of the worst offenders for my setup). I get about 43 fps in this setup. In comparison, an su-25 on Cauc. would give me 65 at the low end (may dip there) and up to 90 on the high end... usually the mid to high 70's fps. This is the story for most of the jets on this map. I disagree in regards to what you find "usable" fps. If you are expecting 180 fps as your bar, go 2d and come back in 5 years. Thats your choice. I find dips below 30 to be noticeable enough to be uncomfortable to play, but anything high 30's low 40's is playable. I flew the entire paradise lost campaign on marianas at about 45-60 fps just fine. If you find 60 fps unplayable I'm guessing you have some other setting that is making it this way. I found that all motion smoothing type settings make my experience horrible and are turned off. YMMV, obviously. Not sure what game you are playing that is delivering 180 fps in VR that is anything close to DCS... maybe some light sabre slashing fruit game.

Better spotting (resolution and anti-aliasing independent)
trevoC replied to Inf's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Unfortunately no solution will be "fair" for multiplayer as a persons hardware can always dictate an advantage over another. I think we should be shooting for what is most realistic and let the multiplayer cards fall where they may. Someone with a 105" 16k screen is always going to see an advantage over my 80's era green screen 320x180. Thats just life. Also... I get 740 fps on my 3090 at 320x180 with 1 color -

Just setup a webcam to monitor your face. When you squint your eyes have an eye tracker zoom into the portion of the screen you are looking at, the more you squint, the more zoom. see... easy. -

The answer isn't a simple yes or no. It would depend on the screen size. I can't see a single pixel on 4k on my 27" at work at a regular distance. (don't think I can at home either on a 30"), but that aside its only a matter of size until I can.... How big? I don't know, but I'm guessing you could on a 50" if you were sitting on top of it. I can however see a single 4k pixel on a 27" up close so its not quite eye resolution at 4k. I'm guessing 8k would solve that as I can just make them out at 4k. I think it will be a while before we're 8k gaming en masse though, especially in VR which is just handling 2k at the moment. 8k VR will be the grail. I've already pre-ordered my 22'nd gen Intel and 90090 ti When the 3d model gets clipped to a single pixel, couldn't they just calculate how many extra pixels (4 in a square or 16 for 8k) to display? I understand (as a developer) why the sprite would be difficult to calculate size based on distance. -
Really wish they would build a full fidelity Su-25 like the A-10C II, I love that aircraft.
