  1. Well, I don't know how to square what you're saying with the book excerpt above. At least one pilot has used it in war, presumably was trained to do so, and operated in accordance with established practices and procedures. I also don't know who you are referring to with this "very common misconception". My expectations are not that I will see A2A-like symbology that allows me to TWS and queue JDAMs on multiple ground vehicles. I fly the Viggen as my primary jet. Its ground mapping radar (while intended primarily for sea ops) provides returns from buildings and vehicles if tuned correctly, and its bombing computer even has a Radar Release mode which is cued by the pilot using reference symbols on the radar screen. I don't expect to go out on wide area search-and-destroy missions, but if I have a good mission plan and know where I expect the target to be, I can use the radar to refine the aim point and compensate for nav errors.

  4. You may need to limit your test to a 5-10 deg offset, not 90 deg, based on what it says in the F-86 spec you quoted. At 90 deg the self erecting feature might be outside its design limits.
  5. @IronMikeForgot to tag you. This "feature" caused me to fail a few missions lately on multiplayer. After flying 15 min through hostile territory, I flew over the target and failed to drop bombs on multiple passes, with no idea why it was failing, before finally getting shot down by SAMs.
  6. When I carry high drag bombs for PLAN bombing, I like to use ANF to see the waypoint circle on the HUD to help me visually locate the target. Once I have the target, I switch back to NAV and execute a CCIP run. I found that if you are in ANF mode when you UNSAFE the trigger, it prevents any subsequent weapon release after switching back to NAV mode. Steps to reproduce: Carry high drag bombs PLAN mode NAV mode with trigger SAFE Switch to ANF mode to locate target With target in sight, UNSAFE trigger (I realize this is probably nonstandard) Switch to NAV mode Place CCIP symbols over target Press Weapon Release trigger HUD symbology switches to "trigger down" display Bombs do not drop Trigger SAFE and then UNSAFE again Press Weapon Release Trigger HUD symbology switches to "trigger down" display Bombs do not drop It's like the computer is locked into the wrong mode. Once this happens, the only way I found to get unstuck is to: Switch to ANF Trigger SAFE (these first two steps can be reversed) Switch to NAV Trigger UNSAFE Press Weapon Release Trigger Bombs drop Track attached.   8. This happens when I have the afterburner detent set and the throttle in full military power, then remove the detent and push forward. I work around it by pulling the throttle momentarily back a little before pushing into afterburner. I haven't tested if it also occurs when going from full mil into afterburner without ever having the detent set.
  9. Bump. There is a placard in the cockpit that has an airspeed limit printed on it. The canopy is ripped off the jet well below the indicated speed. There should also be margin built into the limit, so if the correct value from the -1 is implemented, the canopy should not rip off at 1 kt above that limit.

  14. One of my favorite DCS moments ever was in an F-16 with GBU-12s. My buddy was driving Combined Arms and lasing an SA-10 tracking radar at Sukhumi protected by SA-15s. I went around low behind the hills to the east, got really low and near Mach 1. Came over the hill and pulled down hard to the deck out in the flats, acquired LST on his laser spot, made a high speed run straight at the tracking radar, and popped up about a half mile out for a CCRP drop and shacked it.

  21. Hoggit Syria. Near sea level at Adana. Didn't note the OAT but when I get a chance to reopen the track file I'll look. I assume OAT means outside air temperature, and DA means density altitude.
  22. @IronMike I could not reproduce the oscillations by putting the throttle near the detent. However, tonight I had a recurrence of the oscillation with the throttle all the way at minimum in ground idle. The oscillation had a very regular period of about 1 second, and It was accompanied by a flashing XTANK BRA warning indicator on the left panel during each cycle. The RPM needle bounced up and down a few hundred RPMs. If I pushed the throttle forward past the first detent into flight idle, the oscillation and flashing XTANK BRA went away. It was at the beginning of a ~30 minute multiplayer session, so I have a track file but it is large. I spent a few minutes fiddling with waypoints and mission planning, but once I started taxiing I noticed the oscillation and stopped to make some observations.   24. Yeah, the Hornet is very clicky-clicky, constantly up and down through multiple layers of menu screens on the MFDs, without very good HOTAS support for many things that are comparatively simple in the Viper.

    Where did you hear about this? There is no such thing as a GPS receiver sending data to a GPS satellite. All GPS users are passive only, with respect to the GPS satellites. Could you be thinking of something else? Maybe Assisted GPS (A-GPS) which uses an external time source for faster acquisition?
