It is a bit of a tricky one as like you say it can get a bit subjective. I was trying the instant action missions and it all depends on the type of cloud formations to how bad or good they can look. Hornet, instant action , free flight , Syria. To me it all looks bad. Massive shimmer and heat haze on the horizon and at distant clouds which causes me pretty bad eye strain. Viper, instant action, landing, Caucasus. It looks ok To me anything with dense clouds or clouds around mountains etc.. look pretty bad i.e shimmer and what I would describe as heat haze. There is also the appearance for me that a lot of the clouds are not sitting correctly in the sky, especially the first layer (quite difficult to articulate). If I lift up my HMD and look at screen mirror, the difference is stark. They do look epic. I certainty don't think any of them look great in VR. Being realistic we all know the level of fidelity we get in VR is not going to match ultra on 1440p or 4K , but in general I am more than blown away daily in DCS VR. That's good to hear, thanks for sharing.

Ok I am gonna take a wild stab in the dark as to why this has happened. The Hind is for 2.7 and above and is about to drop soon (I have pre-ordered) The dev team haven't managed to get clouds sorted in VR but have had to push the stable 2.7 release to launch the Hind. If this is the case I understand the team is stretched thin but I honestly hope VR cloud optimisation is a priority and this aint dragged out.

If the clouds are a work in progress then it should stay in Beta IMHO, that is what the beta is for. Yes the game will always be a work in progress but the big stuff shoud be done in the beta. The odd bug here and there making it to stable is no big deal with how much is going on in DCS. We also have to be realistic. Come on if the they were shimmering or performing in 2D like they are in VR then I highly doubt they would even be in the Beta let alone be going to Stable as all that footage of the content creators pushed out in release would have looked bad. The saving grace for DCS VR is the capture footage is not what we see in the HMD as far as promotion/youtube/content creation goes. To be clear this is in ref to clouds only and not the general VR experience. I am gonna be real here, DCS VR is the best gaming experience I have ever had (I started on a ZX spectrum) but if you sat me in the cockpit now with the current clouds in VR It would be a hard pass as they look terrible for the most part, again this is my take and others mileage may vary. I am not trying to take away from what the devs have done, in 2D they look amazing. I am Still trying not be an angry Karen , lol

To me I was under the impression this would not be pushed to stable until they were rendered correctly. Currently they are not for VR. IMHO this should not have even been a consideration to go stable until VR was fully sorted. I am lucky I suffer no adverse effects in VR, no motion sickness or eye strain, under normal circumstances I can game all day in VR. With the 2.7 clouds after only a short while I have a head ache and eye strain as I am trying to focus on something that is basically out of focus (distance clouds and horizon seems to have a heat haze) So for me at least while it is nice not having the clouds rotate (agreed) for most situations the game is unplayable with the new clouds unless it is pretty much clear skies with wisps, Of course others mileage may vary. I certainly don't want to be an angry Karen but sorry I can not help but be extremely disappointed with this move unless there is something drastically wrong my end and I am an outlier.

If that is the case, pretty disappointing then that ED would push this to stable then considering this has a massive negative visual impact to the game in VR.

Not for the latest Beta update, I skipped all beta updates since in the original 2.7 launch which was a fresh install. With that being said have all cloud issues been fixed in VR then?? I have no prob doing some maint if needed or doing a complete fresh install of the beta. But I dont want to update the stable until I see what the clouds look like in Beta really. Thanks for the help

Hi Guys, I run stable and Open Beta. (I mainly play stable), posted here as this is not what I consider a VR bug really. Just seen the news about 2.7 going stable and I am a little perplexed. The clouds in the current open Beta in VR while looking marginally better than initial release still have rendering issues, unlike them looking epic in 2D. (Rift S user at PD 1.5) I got the update notification, so hoped over to the Beta to see if anything has changed and no it hasn't. What the heck is going on ?? I thought VR cloud optimizations were a priority before 2.7 getting a stable release ?? As far as I am aware (could be wrong) in open beta even after the latest patch clouds were still needing to be worked and were a priority. Am I missing some goldilocks setting here ?? Is the stable release literally a copy of the current Beta build or are the VR issues with clouds sorted in the stable release ? I don't want to update my stable release if I am gonna see the clouds as they are in the Beta as there is no kind way to put it, they look plain bad the majority of the time. Very light scattered clouds look ok but any form of dense clouds, not good. Yes the jittering is gone but plenty of other issues I am seeing in the HMD while my screen mirror looks pretty amazing. Is this now considered a fix at a later stage by ED ? Or is this as good as it gets for VR 2.7 ? To be clear I have zero issues in 2.5 VR.

Unless you post a vid of you hovering with the inputs displayed , I don't think many here are going to be able to really help that much unfortunately. I see someone posted a link to curves, have a look at this vid where Casmo has a play in the Gaz, in the vid description is set of curve's. If they are different to the ones above maybe give them a try. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AU3sntZXRbU Although the FM is not the best , it doesn't IMHO make it harder to hover compared to the other Helos in the game.

Order #6121 installed and working great. Thanks

No, Oculus Quest 2 As for the GPU, you will be fine with a 1080Ti (It is what I use + Rift S) but if you can get a more powerful card then go for that.

I think it depends on your experience levels as to the level of enjoyment you will have and whether or not the unfinished items in the module will hamper your experience. I think a lot that bought on day 1 may now be at the point where missing features may cause issue and if buying today an already experienced DCS player is going to also reach that point sooner especially if they are doing complex MP missions. I am a newer player , if you are like me then the uncomplete parts really will not bother you for quite some time, and by that stage there will be further updates to plug the gap (hopefully) Perhaps the only caveat would be for BFM in a BFM server. In it's current state the F-16 is not ideal and if facing off against a reasonable opponent it's a struggle (especially when you are also learning BFM tactics). Overall I really like the Viper, I spend a lot of time doing basic airmanship stuff, landings, AAR etc... The AAR alone will take a lot of time to master !!! (well for me anyway). Some other considerations: In VR the MFD's are smaller so a high PD is necessary (The Hornet for example is a little easier to read as the screens are bigger and closer) I think the overall graphical fidelity of the Hornet cockpit is slightly better than the Viper. There is no virtual pilot like in the Hornet so in VR the cockpit can feel a little empty I have a side stick set-up so the F-16 feels nice in that regard I have a Warthog HOTAS so having the F-16 stick already is also a nice bonus for immersion.

I just rolled back to 457.09 Tonight, I started to have all sorts of issues with stuttering with in Oculus (not a DCS issue) after I turned my PC back on this evening.
-
I just updated to 466.11, performance in Stable seemed like a notable improvement and an FPS gain (Rift S) Hoped back to 2.7 and in any mission with more complicated clouds the performance dips for me. This was even with a lower PD in 2.7 than stable.

How important is a pair of rudder pedals
Clogger replied to foxonefoxtwo's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
I would say unless there is a physical reason to why you can not operate pedals then yes they are a must have (but yes you can fly helos with out them) As others have mentioned you are spending quite a bit already for a module so you might as well make the experience as best as possible and they will add extra immersion in fixed wing planes as well so it's not like a one trick pony purchase. Pedal choice is a tricky one, I have the VKB's : https://flightsimcontrols.com/product/vkb-sim-t-rudder-pedals-mk-iv-2/\ Pro's: They act in a similar manner to helo pedals. You can remove the centre detent. (important for helos) You can adjust the spring tension to suit As they work by pressing down on the pedals, when sat on a wheeled chair you don't get pushed back or twist in your chair. (something I see some users gripe about on other pedals) Amazing build quality Cons's: They don't have physical toe breaks (not an issue for helos) but toe breaks can be handy for fixed wing especially warbirds. They aint cheap (but are priced competitively IMHO) Not saying the VKB's are the best, there are many other great sets of pedals but for helo's they are a good choice and also work great for fixed wing. -
Well I am certainty no expert but wouldn't the opposite be true ?? If the code is making better use of available GPU power then wouldn't the GPU be working less rather than harder trying to maintain the same scene ?? As per the above vid the GPU is working harder and performance headroom is being removed, if a user is already at the point of little or no headroom then surely a harder working GPU is going to see in game performance take a nose dive, unless you relieve that strain by lowering settings ?? (happy to be educated here)

DCS 2.7 New Clouds First VR Impressions! Reverb G2 + RTX 3090 - YouTube Go to to 9.25 mins, Side by side of 2.5 vs 2.7. I would suspect (happy to be corrected) this is why some are seeing no performance difference and some of us are. GPU usage in this vid shows higher usage for 2.7. If you have some headway and run ASW (or equivalent) then that higher usage may well be masked by the locked framerates. The GPU is working harder but frame times and on screen performance will look the same. i.e they have still lost performance but it is above the threshold where it is going to dip below 45 locked. They may have been at an average 60 unlocked but dropped to 50 unlocked, but again as they are using a locked FPS, this performance dip will not be noticed. If like a lot you run unlocked FPS and have tuned settings to this (this is what I have done), then the higher GPU usage is going to see you take a hit in FPS. To me it is a simple as that. (again happy to be corrected) I would guess those seeing stuttering were at the limit of ASW and dropping below due to higher GPU utilization. So if want to maintain my unlocked 60 FPS average (in Helos my average is lower) , if the GPU utilization is higher then I am going to have lower some settings. If ED is saying there is no performance difference then why is GPU utilisation higher in 2.7 ?? (at least as per this vid)

I have no doubt there will be optimizations , this is what the Beta is for. But I am a little concerned. in stable release I have really worked on VR settings where I have got it to a decent FPS/Graphical fidelity. The problem is with the lower FPS'es in VR there isn't much wiggle room. I do not want to reduce any in game settings and I can only afford to lose a few FPS ( I would rather lose none and see a performance increase through general behind the scenes optimizations) With the current hardware shortages, upgrading may not be possible for over another year or so (even though I think my system is still pretty good). There will be users with even less wiggle room then me and even those that managed to bag the latest hardware , having to reduce settings will be just as much of a bummer for them as even with top tier hardware i.e 3080's you are not getting any major boost in performance. I do have faith in ED but they must understand that getting the game to run well in VR is hard work and for most any performance hit may well be a show stopper.

I normally only play stable but of course hoped over to the Beta for the clouds. I made all my settings the same as stable and FPS performance was notably worse for me. To clarify I am perfectly happy with performance and settings in stable (took me a while but its very dialled in) but in the Beta the FPS was below what I would be happy to play at with my same settings. Overall probably about a 20FPS average loss, although with ASW off and FPS fluctuating it is somewhat hard to guage. I did run the same mission I created in both stable and Beta 2.7 but I was trying lots of differnt clouds settings. I did also note a lot of issues with the new clouds, what looks like heat haze and shimmer, some clouds renered very stangly that they just looked odd and out of place. Everything just looked a bit out of focus and it started to cause me eye strain. For now I am happy to hop back to the stable game. I am sure ED will optimise further, that is the point of Beta.

Display tanker direction lights in an overlay?
Clogger replied to TobiasA's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
I would like this, in VR I find the lights impossiple to make out as well. Perhaps this along with carrier lights in relivant moduals as an option in the special tab to let individuals decide if they want to use these features. -
I would very much welcome a pilot in the F16, the same standard as the FA-18 would be great.
-
Just pre-ordered, hopefully the wait isn't too long before early access but I have more than enough to get on with in the mean time, so no big deal for me. Really looking forward to flying this around.
-
Ok so I just had a fly in the Harrier to check, I put the seat at the lowest possiple position (I dont normally do this), I then displayed the pilot body. I can then adjust my view as much as I want with camera up and down (binded to my joystick via CTRL+ POV hat) to change my view of the HUD all the way up to a pretty extreme level and even then you dont float really at all above the body. If you push the view all the way down you do sink below the level of the sholders but I see no reason to do this. Yes I guess a HOTAS bind might help as with the pilot body in place it obscures the switch but setting the seat lower and then using the camera adjust works if you need to tweak your posistion mid flight quickly without looking bizare in relation to your in game body. (I did the above in VR).
-
Moving the cockpit cam up and down, fwd/bk and left right work in VR and Track IR, I do it in all of my moduals and I fly 90% in VR. I usual only use up/dwn fwd/bk so do a bind to my POV/trim hat with the ctrl key as a modifer. No need for any back and forth binds you can do it in the DCS binds page.

If wishes were horses for unarmed Gazelle.
Clogger replied to DmitriKozlowsky's topic in SA-342M Gazelle
Yea another varinant for just map exploring, CSAR missions would be awesome, just remove the door gunner and add doors on/off in the special menu. Could be called the Gaz C
