Look forward to being a face masher. I have almost all the DCS modules but recently been flying the snot out of the Harrier. I have the TM HOG programmed for all but for most can mouse what I need. The exceptions are cases like using mavs or other guided weapons. As I said though, flying the helis and warbirds and maybe having to set a puke bucket next to me would make me a happy man. Flew 5+ yrs wearing NVGs so flying with sweat and a scuba mask on will not be so alien.

Well I have not flown IRL since I was 45 almost 8 yrs ago when I was injured in a helicopter incident that ruined my back. Been simmng since Microprose F-19 on a mighty 25 mhz Tandy from Radio shack that cost $3000. Really look forward to the experience and downloading the programs now. Only real unknown is my glasses which are really for close up small print. A little heat in the middle and I can bend them to hug my face.

Well its a done deal...Here Tuesday. I understand there is some software to be preloaded so best to wait for the Rift or can I go ahead and preload? If so where? Have some time to read up and try to reduce the learning curve and take notes on best settings, positioning the sensors for a seated position etc... Any places besides here that are "must reads" for VR simming feel free to post em. Thanks all..

This was like going to Oktoberfest and asking if beer was good. Did you hear that????? That was the sound of $400 leaving my bank. Oh and about 6 other "must haves" that have been patiently waiting in Amazon's cart for 6 months.

I cannot fly without track ir. For me its the IMMERSION. I flew IRL for 30+ yrs so no longer into setting up intricate flight plans, programming a FMS etc. The AI is so wonky I may ground pound some but for the the most part just burn holes in the sky. Watched the vids, heard the oohs and aahs but also lived through the numerous VR hype of the past. I do not know the scoop on what the near future holds for the goggles or if a major upgrade or version is on the near horizon. $400 is cheap for sim gear but that said I don't want to buy right before a new version is forecast to be released. "My advice is to wait until Monday to see what the new HTC headset will have." EXACTLY. As with vid cards there is always a "better, faster" around the corner. Going to decide by Sunday night Anything else needed? The Amazon package has the goggles, 2 controllers and iirc 2 sensors. My computer/tv are within 3-4 ft of me if that so don't think I need the extension.

Vet simmer, latest greatest Falcon NE build, 1080 ti MSI VR ready card, 38' Sony 4k tv, TM HOG Hotas, track IR.... I have all the ingredients but one. I no longer have the drive to spend countless hours tweeking to get something right like I use to. Seeing I will be sitting and simming I assume setting up 2 sensors will be simple. Appears my card has 2 hdmi needed. I DO wear reading glasses which is a major issue in my decision. Also there are reports of failing hdmi issues with the Rift. Do I jump in now at $400 or wait till the major changes with DCS and wait till the dust settles? In other words is VR going to BLOW:yes: this old simmer's mind so go ahead and whip out the CC or leave well enough alone and wait a while longer?

I thought I understood this stuff very well but spent 1/2 a hr until I ran across this explanation which I wrote down and got my 1st lock and kill on a infantrymen no less. Maybe something in this quick n easy tutorial might help.

I was flying a Jet Ranger and started noticing I was having problems with my right foot. It got weaker and weaker and then pain started creeping in. A MRI revealed I had a massive disc herniation at L5S1 leading to a botched operation and 2 follow up attempts to repair the damage to the sciatic nerve.. Thats really low on your spine and a common injury for pilots from sitting long hours and/or pulling Gs. You will notice most fighter pilots are usually shorter, very lean and have big necks. Flew a good 2 hrs last night and 1st to admit I rarely mess with stick values other than 100%. I would like to see if anyone has some ideas on getting the mush and heavy stick out of the roll rate. Also here in central SC, during my flying mostly in the early-mid 90s saw Harriers everyday as I flew a lot along the coast and Beaufort Marine MCAS station is nearby. Have lots of stories and a 20% hearing loss due to them... Saw one disobey tower commands NOT to hover but cleared to land at KCAE.Well he DID and not only fouled it with debris but caught the runway on fire which led to a multimillion dollar strengthening of both TD zones on both ends closing the main runway for a month. Last time they ever came up.
-
Something I noticed was see how fast and crisp his rolls are? I took off with almost no fuel, made my Warthog stick as sensitive as possible. The roll rate is much slower. I know its apples to orange but after mastering the Gazelle the Harrier handles like a bag of wet sand. So those with Gaz or even Huey time will be nailing small areas quick My fav practice is at Tonapah which has 2 square pads both ends of the runway, one fenced in. But what impressed me the most was I flew for 25 yrs before injuring my back and ticket but had many hours in aerobatics. This guy was calling out 6 Gs like it was the time of day. I tell you 6 is pretty rough:wacko: and doing it in front of a huge crowd with cameras in the pit and carrying on a conversation was boss. I mean stuff like 6+ G max turn into a inverted 100 ft pass center field into a vert climb and roll out with 2 degrees and 50 ft...... Its why he is in that pit.
-
I know we have all seen many Harrier vids but I stumbled across this one that not only has cockpit and external views but also the pilot talks you through his routine along with hud views. He covers all of the well known Harrier maneuvers. Watching him calling out his intended altitudes, headings, speed etc and NAILING them is impressive. Good watch... Not sure about the rules posting YT links so search - Shoreham Airshow 2000 - BAe Harrier GR7 - Flt Lt Dave Haines WTH- The link.

Or maybe a brain tumor.

I will be the 1st to admit that after spending all of last week moving from P3D V3 to V4 along with over a $1000 in addons, having a botched MS W/10 auto update a few days ago that will not allow me to reboot my computer only turn it off/on manually, that my brain is cooked. That said, I watched dozens of YT videos showing the Harrier landing on the ship but none flying in Vegas or Normandy and don't recall any conversations about this so "assumed" it was just for 1.5 map. Also, I don't remember seeing this detail on the product details of the Harrier. Don't recall seeing it while looking over the forums to make sure it was not a disaster before buying. I also downloaded the Raz manual and others that are more in depth than any plane IRL I am typed in. Then I got the 2.2 patch and again "assumed" the Harrier was for both 1.5 and 2.0+. No biggie as I have been simming since Microprose F-19 on a Tandy 25 hz and accustomed to the glacier like speed fixes and patches take but a difficulty of reading upside down Chinese calculus it takes to keep track of what, how and when it takes to run the sim. We simmers really are gluttons for punishment.

Have 2.0 and 1/2 dozen planes. Bought the Harrier yesterday and just for the carrier just finished installing 1.5. The Harrier is not to be seen? I installed all my other aircraft/helis but the Harrier is not on the bottom bar. Confused??? I see the vids of it flying the caucus map and landing on the ship. Where is the Harrier? Its 2.30 AM and I am 1/2 awake so if its something simple I am missing cut me some slack.:smilewink: Thanks, Jim

Speaking of burning up the runway...Early 90s while based a KCAE 2 Harriers came up from KNBC MCAS and were cleared to land but NOT TO HOVER. Well they DID and not only fouled the runway but caught it on fire. No more Harriers after that. A few years later that main runway was closed and 10 mil was spent on beefing the TD zone up. Ooooops.....

Previous Harriers in Fs9 and FSX had horrible VTOL modelling. Any complaints were written off as "real pilots train for years". When transitioning from FF to hover there was a abrupt pitch up and the overall handling felt scripted. Cheats and tricks were used to achieve the appearance of VTOL. Curious to see how they pull it off. Harriers were very common around here and I often flew into fields where they operate so I have a good idea of how they should handle and what they are capable of. I understand DCS is a completely different engine and will throw $60 at it to support the effort but I am going to be restrained in my excitement. I do expect many patches and a long continuing development time after release. Simulating the Harrier would be a monumental effort for even the largest of developers so we shall see .

I had 2 folders in my saved games folder. One was DCS. Thats the one I and the instructions say to place it in. Did not show up in game. The second folder is DCS.openalpha I assume thats a ALPHA version. My install was done LATE at night as is rather long. Also there are many patches automatically added. That said, I have no clue but when placed into the .openalpha folder your mod worked. Maybe someone can chime in but either I have a unique install or others already know this.
-
I have a DCS folder and a DCS.openalpha. It went into the 1st one. There is no .openalpha which tbo I do not recall if I am running. DCS is 300+ megs and openalpha is 200 megs. Do I need to create a LIVERIES folder in the openalpha? Going to try and see what happens. **** YES. The liveries went into the openalpha and it works. Hopefully this will help someone in the future. This explains a lot and why some user files I recently tried did not work. I have a pet peeve about right off the showroom floor aircraft and really appreciate your time/effort in weathering the interior. Thanks, JIMJAM

link to pdf requires sign up. Sorry about that. http://www.476vfightergroup.com/ Thats where I stumbled across a wealth of actual info on everything there is to possible know about the Nellis area, charts, regs, MOAs, high speed corridors, bombing areas and details that even the most hardcore fighter jock would spend hours reading. I was able to download the pdf but when I tried linking it denied me. Worth signing up for imo. Sorry for any confusion or if its a known resource.

I am just running 1 4k tv and never know what to expect. Every click leads to a surprise screen size usually very small in the upper corner. Click it and it expands. Checking fps is impossible to read and now its missing totally. Thats my native res but I went down to 1080 on both game/computer and the same full/mall/full/small/ screen fest begins. Its a mouse click simulator.

My last post on it until a update comes out. Its not all negative. The cockpit graphics and overall detailing are incredible. This is top notch pro work all the way. My computers have always hated any aircraft with huds, crt displays but the harrier runs very, very smooth. That and the overall attitude and quick replies from one of the devs "I assume" on the message boards is encouraging. Again, the Raz harrier is far from being a bad addon, just another one released a little soon. Its like jumping in your freshly washed, detailed sports car and then while driving noticing a big splotch of bird poo staring you right betreen the eyes. lol !!! Not a big deal in itself but kinda ruins the drive.

I am sure they will fix the major issues and eventually iron out the more complex avionics. Now getting the vtol fm in the ballpark is going to be the doozie but ought to be sorted out. I read the forums where people argue over the nose shape, rivet locations, nose gear height, the proper fuel consump at various altitudes/loadouts ect. So when the topic of how it handles in vtol/stol comes around its really going to get lively. Maybe my coffee was a little to strong but rereading my above post I hope I did not come across as being angry or feeling ripped. Its a great looking aircraft/cockpit and handles/feels great in normal flight. Its just when you finally get the time to sit down and take your first few shakedown familiarity flights and you see these blaring issues. Then you hanger it and wait for patches. Its just frustrating deja vu.

I would not get to excited about a release for DCS. How long has FSX been around? The installer was wrong. Then little to no info on how how to operate the aircraft. A whole bunch of issues in the pit, hud. Vsi does not show + or -. Other indicators, gear, fuel ect ect wrong. Altitude readout missing a digit. Never flown above 10000 in testing admited:doh: The VTOL is totally botched. From 130 to zero instantly when vectoring. Just a total excercise in frustration. I could go on and on and I really believe it released this prematurely. I know , I know, its a work in progress and we are working hard on fixing these issues. Sounds all to familiar....... The whole throw it on em and we will fix it as we go is getting old. If you guys are expecting this pretty screenshot art to be fully operational for DCS combat this decade good luck.

Me too! I use TrackIr and tried one night last week for over a hour. I stopped after I almost puked from all that twisting and turning staring at a 37 inch screen in the dark. Next morning I could hardly turn my head my neck was so sore. I would love to see some kill vids. Btw- I got behind him a few times when I think the AI simply said "here, kill me". I laid some serious lead in him and still no kill.

My first sim was Microprose F-19 running on a $3000 "in todays money what, $6000" at a unheard of 20 mhz. The runways were lines, mountains were triangles and I was drop jawed and glued to the screen overwhelmed by the realism of it all. Now my 8 yr old Nephew sits in my flight chair compete with subwoofers, complete HOTAS,37 inch LCD screen flying FSX loading with about a grand of payware addons. He looks over at me and says, "Why cant I blow things up?" Gotta remember to him these ARE the days of lines as runways and triangles for mountains to him. The evolution continues.......... Simming has been a expensive and frustrating hobby but I hope I live to see the day where you have to wear a blood pressure monitor to cut the sim off if its gets to high. The opening screen warns they are not responsible for heart attacks and the sim comes with barf bags.
