  1. Thats just it.... I have lost count of how many times I do not have enough rudder authority to keep the plane straight. It's not right. You should not need a 10 thousand foot runway to stop it. ANY braking send it off towards the grass and then it goes into a classic ground loop skid that is so consistent that it might as well be a programmed event. Once it begins I simply just let go and let it come around and get it over with. I have flown many planes with nasty habits such as the F-104 Starfighter which if you do or don't do something the only thing you can do is eject. You learn them and don't do it. This flight model on MY setup and it appears a lot of us is not something you learn "not to do" and "how it is" but a issue inherent to the nws and the way it is modelled. I don't accept that you touch down, hit the chute and just wait patiently as the the slows down to taxi speed before you can turn it. Rudder alone is NOT enough for us.
  2. Right from the horse's mouth with no conjecture. Bottom line is the 109 was a pooch in the air with very little torque roll and flies "hands off". All the nasty habits were on the ground. Still we must fly the model we are given which appears to be more harsh than the real aircraft. A good vid of a current pilot "chief test pilot Airbus" of a restored 109 having his brain picked from simmers like us about very specific quirks and how the 109 behaves. They ask him the EXACT question about torque roll during cruise and trim. NO RUDDER DURING CRUISE NEEDED. NO HANDS ON NEEDED. ELEVATOR NEUTRAL. MINIMAL TO NO TORQUE ROLL ADDING THROTTLE. IIRC he says 10mm from idle to full power. ALL issues with the 109 appear to be ON the ground. In the air it's a pooch. Listen to him and he clears up a lot of misconceptions about the 109. After listening it appears DCS 109 is a little aggressive in the roll during cruise. He comments the 109 was trim neutral and harmonized but added 10 thousand were destroyed during t/o and landing. Another nugget was +1 trim on takeoff. I have time in a few high powered, some overpowered small experimental aircraft. One was a small 2 seat Glasair 3 with 300+ HP engine that can hit almost 300 mph. Almost instant throttle and control response being very crisp but light. It's probably the closest thing I've flown to a warbird where you "fly the prop". Of course the 109 is made to kill and having trim neutral ability for pilot's comfort during cruise wasn't a concern. All have a roll tendency and yes for sport flying that tilt does irk one accustomed to straight and level but that bird is made to kill. Don't recall the numbers but at cruise iirc I pulled prop back and can achieve a comfortable level flight which does have that slow creep from level. I keep it on auto as I do not fly the 109 worrying about a passenger in the back spilling her glass of wine. Fly it hard. She is leaning cause it want's to turn towards the enemy and bring out the teeth.
  3. 1st computer was a Radio Shack bought Tandy 20 mz for $3000 iirc to fly Microprose F-19. The game had one graphics option that added a few triangles and lines which brought the computer to a crawl. Took it back and wanted the fastest thing they had, a mighty 25 mz!! The salesmen ask "What the hell do you need all that speed for?" 35 yrs later I can simply look back and we Vet simmers don't need to speculate on what this new version will entail. Yes you can use more speed, more memory and no you will not be able to max it all out and check every box. If a option is added say, squirrels, glass haze shimmer refraction speculative enhancing scratch detail.. You will want to enable it. If that requires a 2080 TI with blue dot 32 g ram, you will get it.
  4. Thanks for the reply. I have some time in most all the small tail draggers and some h perf like the Glassair and Lancair which all will swap ends pretty dam quick if you get heavy footed. No problems with the DCS notorious German birds or P-51. I was fortunate to work for the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission and bumming rides was fairly easy  As I said above, Bolden flew in KCAE all the time as did other Nasa pilots in T-38s and they blew tires all the time yet I never saw any erratic swaying. One thing I am aware of and people don't realize is just how fast they are moving on the taxiway. Agreed about simulating ground/wheel contact and lateral side forces. P3D was the worst at any ground handling ops. I not only enjoy difficult and moody aircraft but seek them out. Just in the last week I made the leap into VR and it truly is a game changer. Both heli ops and flying the props are much more seat of the pants as you have a dramatic increase in your situational awareness and depth perception is easier to judge. Still looking for some pedal settings to calm down the nws. I am open to higher quality pedals but the ones I hear about are always unavailable on Amazon. Source???
  5. IRL the sun is a major issue. I flew from Kcae, Columbia SC to KATL Atlanta every day for over a year. In the late evening I flew into the sun and it was basically IFR. If people want 100% realism, then you would end up with a sim when operating on a sunny day basically totally washed out and then would need to properly simulate sunglasses or visor. Then we would need what I would call "BUG GUTZ 2.0". A realistic bug guts addon with various colors, running streams of goo, wings, exploders..... Even some "live" that hang on till about 150 or so. "Pigeon Poo Pro" is also a idea of mine. Anyone who every owned or maintained a aircraft despises these flying rats that disperse "White Out TM" of their asses and ruin your freshly detailed machine. BTW White Out actually is pigeon poo. Mike Nesmith of the Monkeys mother's story behind White Out went like this . A overflying pigeon over flew her and with a perfect aim hit her magazine with it's white waste and she had her inspiration. Or so some guy told a friend of a stranger I met.
  6. What rudder settings are you using because with "my" setup it is not right nor realistic. Don't doubt the programming from what you guys say which leaves my "I assume" default settings. I am using the Saitek pro pedals, realistic FM. The only thing I fooled with was deadzone which has no effect. Not afraid to admit even after flying since Microprose F-19 and all the IL series, the CURVES and related settings are very confusing and I usually make things worse. I am not over controlling or to hard on the pedals "IRL" but they are with out a doubt way, way to sensitive. I basically have to "poke" them. There is no feeling of a gradually increasing brake authority but on/off. As is, it is better simply to use R-L braking for steering and a mapped brake on/off once the aircraft is straight and under say 40. Any advice welcomed....
  7. I ask the same question and here is how it went. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=199624 Bottom line is I have been simming and was a former fixed/rotor pilot for 35 yrs. Another vet summed it up very well and here it is with my take. If you want to go for clarity and fly online where the 1st guy who spots the other 1st WINS, stick with 4k. If you want IMMERSION and want to feel like you are actually sitting in a actual cockpit, look over and experience depth perception but at the cost of clarity, go VR. I have a very high end Sony 4k 36 inch and spent 1/2 my time tweaking P3D and DCS for graphics. So I knew the reduction would be steep and hit hard. But the very 1st time I ran VR and within 10 seconds of the "tutorial" for using your hands which takes place in a electronics shop, I KNEW instantly this was the VR I had been waiting for decades. Do it but don't slouch. My MSI 1080 TI was "VR READY" which meant nothing to me 6 months ago. But now when I realized Oculus needed TWO hdmi connections and the card had them, it made that steep price worth it. Do it.:smilewink:
  8. Thanks... If mod wants to move this there I understand.
  9. Goes to hit BUY even at 80 bucks then hear my visiting sister yell... "Your microwave is not heating up my coffee and making a funny sound." Funny how life works that way......
  10. I am one of those who HAS to have air blowing all the time so I have plenty. Got one of those fancy dyson no blade desk left of the warthog and also a large room fan. I also wear glasses but luckily I can do just fine without them. Be very careful not to scratch the glass. I should be getting a aftermarket replacement leather/cloth face pad which users say does not soak up the sweat as bad and allows better circulation/less fogging. I will report my findings. Had I needed glasses and still might, I am hoping a thicker face pad will give some more space betreen glasses and glass. Just flew my first "hell yeah..this is incredible" mission against some ground threats in the harrier. I recently enabled hdr and imo cleans it up and looks better. IRL I have a lot of time wearing NVG and flying so again I got lucky in that using the VR zoom feature does not make me nauseated. In VR using the labels for me is a must and what I did was pop them on/off and with the zoom was lethal against the targets with the gun. Dam this is fun.:D
  11. If it makes you feel any better I started flying irl tail draggers when I was 15 and have over a 300 in a Cub alone. Yet still 1/3 of every landing in this plane I end up sliding sideways. How many military jets you seen ground loop? I know the t-38's landing characteristics well, which is similar as Charles Bolden when he was a active astronaut flew in all the time and I would guess 1 outta 5 landings ruined or blew a tire so thats accurate. His mother/family live here. Other Nasa pilots would also blow tires fairly routinely. Mechs would drive all the way from Alabama iirc to change it here in SC. Gov $$ at work. I have not sat down and really tweaked the settings other than tinker with deadzone but something is not right thats for sure.
  12. I was a hardcore quad flyer with goggles "Fat Shark" and wonder why Oculus they did not add a small fan into the goggles. $$ had something to do with it. I am really getting red face as the heat does build after usage. I have some mask that I adapted to the goggles for quads with small fans and going to try and make it happen. Also have a leather/cloth face mask shield due in to make it less sweat inducing and also does not soak it up like a sponge. Not sure if its the Rift making my face red and eyes bake or those videos that have nothing to do with flying that those russian hackers keep putting on my computer...
  13. After reading some forums it seems the latest "5th" of this month iirc Nvidia drv has some serious problems. Of course those with no issues don't post. Went back one and now the Gazelle heli loads without crashing and some other wierdness seems better. I have a Asus Z170 Deluxe mobo/ MSI 1080 GTX/32 gigs, recent Falcon Northwest custom build btw and I was unable to reboot. The tv would simple lose signal but the tower would still be lit up leading me to hold the on/off button. Was a major PITA during MS last huge update as it would not reboot automatically. I use msa afterburner but tbo just bumped it up a little. I have learned the hard way that tweaking bios or the card can/will lead to wierd things. I flew a couple flights and must admit that even with thousands of rl hrs in wing slingers, the Gazelle got me cross eyed and I had to have turned green! Doesn't help that quick rotation even my fire breathing rig can't keep up and those micro stutters really press the nausea button hard. Seriously Thanks for the tips and I will keep in touch so others can learn from us and we stumble though imo what I feel is finally the REAL VR awakening.
  14. Appears to might have been a recent 5th of Jan Nvidia driver. A quick check and the boards had a lot of nasty issues. Typical as those with no issues don't even look but I have had some wierd things going on. The inability to reboot or even shut down. Comp still does it from time to time. Asus mob Z170 deluxe. Went back one driver date . Gaz loaded and the 1st aircraft that I actually got cross eyed on and IRL would have been turning green.
  15. Thanks for the detailed reply. Late last night I had 2 more hard crashes with a windows box that said the computer was low on memory and had to shut down. Never seen that before. Did update Nvidia driver a few days ago iirc.
  16. Spoke to soon. Just flew or tried to fly and had numerous ctds/black screens. Once was after I ejected and the others were switching aircraft and trying to start a flight or exiting after a graphics change. I was one usb short so I used one of those 4x that was a older 2.0. I have been assured running mice/kb even the hotas on 2 is fine. Thats said I also noticed a red flag on the oculus menu warning me of the need to possible update my usb drivers. Don't think its the issue but I have never liked plug in extra usbs but rather a powered or in a slot. Going to remove the now unused Trackir and get rid of the 2.0 usb hub and see what happens.
  17. From hearing others describe what they see from watching a lot of vids I am pretty sure it is just how it is. You can always move UP in quality and down is when it get tough.
  18. Thanks guys. Seeing that it appears to be the only one with issues I am going to enjoy my honeymoon phase with VR before I go tinkering with stuff and possibly ruin it. IRL I flew helis and would kill for either a Ranger or even better a H500. VR to me at it's current quality is ideal for low and slow with lots of "stuff". Jim
  19. I broke tradition and rather than build my rig splurged and got the fastest system Falcon Northwest had as my Xmas gift. I don't care HOW much faster you can go, what we have with VR is IT. I can already max everything unless you go piling on ai and it looks, well rough. No amount of HP or spell casting is going to change the overall look of vasoline smeared glasses. Time, patience and future support is all we can do.
  20. Save up for the TM Warthog. If not, I had been using a X52 for 10+ yrs. Great for helis and planes. Still, the WH is a amazing piece of gear and worth saving for. Buy once.
  21. Compared to the DOS days and literally thousand of hours tweaking FS9/FSX .cfgs, there really is not much in DCS to do. Yes I have watched the guy but other than clicking on boxes and seeing what happens no really much else. I think those of us with the latest/greatest rigs its a case of "It is what is is." Shut up and fly.....
  22. Just jumped into Oculus VR and before I go diving in trying to troubleshoot and searching the forums with eyes that are already sore is the Gazelle having serious issues in VR? During my initial "WOW" and trying all the aircraft the Gaz would not even load and hard crash my system requiring a restart. No issues before. Either from scratch or simply swapping aircraft from a saved mission, 2 point whatever the latest is in Nellis refuses to even load it and I get a black screen.
  23. Only issue is the Gazelle is hard crashing me into a black screen with only the oculus page viewable through the goggles. Screen is black and cnt alt del ---alt tab. esc etc does nothing, only a reboot. Other thing is I was in the Harrier and wanted to use NV and bringing up comms was a major pita. Had to take a peek for the correct F keys. Actually had my 1st " I don't feel so good.." In Vegas I was buzzing the strip in the Huey and decided it was time to take a break so I intentionally clipped one of the cranes with my blades. The heli lost it's blades and fell. I gotta admit watching the ground rush up at me was not only scary but hurl inducing. Still playing with the dot thingie which most feel should be left a 1.5 iirc. Def shading for me is a must. Currently I am running everything maxxed, 4x msaa iirc, shadows norm 16x. Night looked like dog poo but I have learned if you stare at something long enough and DON'T look for example at that latest, greatest TV or even new car, you get accustomed to it and it grows on you. For me, imo VR is now best for the slow movers and low so you can get the depth.
  24. Wordy but it is the morning after and a response to a earlier post for advice on if I am ready to jump into VR. Soloed on my 18th Bday mid 80s and went on to fly fixed/rotor craft until being injured at 45. 1st sim was Microprose F-19 on a Tandy 20 mhz from Rat shack for $3000. Recently posted asking "VR"? and response was overwhelmingly HELL YES. Yesterday was the day. Usually build my own rigs but my Xmas gift to me was a no expense spared build from Falcon Northwest. Worth every penny as it was truly VR ready although be aware every usb port is precious. Uses a 2.0 extension for mouse/keyboard/trackir. Running 4.7, 16 gigs, MSI 1080 ti GTX/win 10. Oc Rift. The initial hands tutorial with the robot assistant in the shop BLEW MY MIND. Was truly up there with some of life's top 10 "in awe" moments. Coming from a former builder of quad copters the 2nd thing I noticed is why they did not have a simple small fan similar to those in computers or to cool rc speed controllers blowing in air to cool the face. My Fat Shark goggles had a simple mod that clipped on the foam piece that forms around the face. I stress this because the lights DO get hot and many times I mistaken my red face for my BP getting high. DCS- I can run W.A open so left the settings alone at 4k, dot setting at 2.0 iirc. 1st flight was the Harrier at Groom. Again, initial MIND BLOWN  followed by "dam this is fuzzy. Coming from a 38 inch Sony 4k its a steep drop but a DCS poster told me you want multiplayer kills stay with 4k. You want immersion go VR. Best advice yet. Old cliche but unless you experience it you really cannot describe it. A hologram you operate is the closest. I had a few deja vu moments from my RL flying days mainly in the helis which I have most time in. For me the cockpit enviro and looking over your shoulder and down were the highs and the distance fuzz. the overall "vasoline" appearance and clouds the low points. Lighting changes are truly incredible as are the little details you never noticed that simple drop your jaw. Except for the facial heat, I already have passed the HOTAS Warthog blind test so other than the occasional peek at the keyboard transition was smooth. Had numerous crashes usually when switching aircraft and a couple oom errors. IMO combat and spotting ground targets is impossible. VR to me is for the experience of jumping in a aircraft and feeling as though you are really operating a machine rather than watching graphics on a monitor change. So bottom line it was worth $400 just to experience VR even if for a short time and back to trackir for simming. The advice of if you want graphics clarity, ease of use and seeing the enemy, stick with 4k. If you want mind blowing IMMERSION, VR is a must have is also my conclusion.
  25. I had a hell of a time setting up my trackir seeing that I have such a large tv. You can't set it on top "to high" and to far. So I had to make a clear plastic stand that sets on the table at the right height and distance so it works with my cap. I see the rift has 2 sensors but all the vids are made for small room moving around. Any tips/tricks on setting them up for a stationary sim situation? No doubt I am over thinking this but I always have and always will. All I am sure of is my MSI 1080 ti says it is VR ready with 2 hdmi, I have enough ports and I am assuming this comes with any other cables needed. Nothing worse than having to run to BB for that cable/adapter. edit- Thanks Lucky. Company seems to be overseas. I can fly quad copters with various goggles but of course you can adjust the camera focus. In vr as with a monitor you can focus your eyes to a certain extent. Question is will that slightly out of whack focus get the best of you and lead to headaches or nausea. My high $$ glasses have 2 lenses for long distance and reading. They meet the mm criteria from Oculus and I also have a few tricks up my sleeve if they are to big. Worst thing would be scratching the glass in the unit. Have to wait and see what awaits me.
