  1. Re: RAF-Kichu's link in the post one above this: Let's hope that's an extreme example!! Kind of makes Starforce look like our favorite aunty doesn't it? Seriously though, that is the perfect example of my point earlier about the innocent majority suffering for the guilty minority. The copy protection is hacked, so the publishers use stricter controls, which then get hacked. It is, I'm afraid, a viscious circle. I'm personally fully in support of a publisher and/or developer having the right to protect their investment. But I have to admit that in some cases (such as the link you posted) it does seem like the honest majority (which is usually also the silent majority) is being overlooked as the copy protection designers develop tunnel vision and concentrate purely on thwarting the pirates while showing little or no regard for everyone else. That being the case, although I personally wasn't too concerned about Starforce and was annoyed that the release of FC was delayed again, I am glad to see that ED listened to the community and took action. If the developers keep listening then hopefully the future will be bright. However we, as the customer, have to be prepared to accept that this isn't an ideal world and there will be a line that any competent businessman has to draw in how far he will risk his investment to piracy. My hope is that the developers are becoming aware that a number of their potential customers are unhappy with intrusive copy protection and will pressure the copy protection designers to come up with less intrusive methods of supplying the same level of security.
  2. I'll certainly not be downloading it. As one method of protecting my PC I don't download anything from sites hosting pirate software. I would much rather wait two more weeks for a genuine copy. As it is, there is no way it could be the actual game. Think about it. The "so called" pirate version, as I said earlier is supposed to be about 640MB. If that awas the actual game, why on earth would Ubi (penny pinchers that they are...remember the "we can't afford the 3rd CD for Pacific Fighters" debacle?) put out a game on DVD that tehy could fit on a single CD? It just wouldn't happen. And although this supposed pirated version is called SH3 CD1 there has been no mention I've seen of a CD2 or CD3. I can understand your point about copy protection, but unfortunately developers have to do whatever they can to protect their investment. Hopefully one day a copy protection system will be produced that'll be both transparant and near fool proof. But that day is yet to come (if it ever does). Therefore (purely a personal opinion here) we have to bite the bullet for the time being if we want the small independant developers to stay in business. It's a sad fact of life that it is usually the inocent majority that suffer for the actions of a guilty minority. It happens in nearly all walks of life to some extent. Hopefully though the developers will take note of the feelings of their legitimate customers and make finding some form of non-intrusive copy protection a priority. If they do, things will improve. Personally, as much as I don't like the idea of intrusive copy protection, I'm prepared to put up with it if it means the independants stay alive. I would much rather do this and be left with either Ubi or Microsoft having a monopoly in this genre.
  3. (EDITED) Yes..And the SO CALLED SH3 CD1 image is apparently 643MB in size where as the actual program is somewhat bigger than that (approx 2GB according to the SH3 forums). Also, considering the game has only just gone gold yesterday and has not actually been released yet, would you care to take a guess as to how the pirates got hold of it? Considering what their community is like news of any leak would have hit the forums very quickly. The game is being released on DVD only BTW. No multi disc CD version is planned at the moment. And I've seen no mention of Starforce on their official (Ubi) forums whatsoever.
  4. Yeah. I must remember the mirror trick..It'll save me from numerous strange lumps and bruises on the back of my head!! On that subject....Why do we always have to pay to replace the stuff they break when they throw it at us? :?
  5. 1 word?!?!?! I just get "the look". You know the one I'm talking about. "The look" that calls you every expletive in human existence in every language imaginable. It is sort of a mixture of ------> :? :x   I'm not sure how they do it. That is usually about the time I hold up my cross and start yelling scriptures. Yep. I know "THE LOOK" I managed to become immume to it after divorcing my first wife. I'm hoping to end up immune to the female "F" word soon as well. You know the one I mean: You say: "What's wrong?" She replies: "Nothing. I'm FINE!" (Usually acompanied by "THE LOOK" for added effect). ...Oooh. Even the thought of it has me shaking in my boots!! (BTW... You do realise that we are going to die for this don't you???)
  6. Believe me Greenies, a wife can beat you up more effectively with one word than a 7 foot bouncer with a baseball bat!! I've had two...I KNOW!!!! Dunno where they teach 'em to do that. But it happens somewhere between the engagement ring and the wedding ring. And leaves you with a lifetime of suffering!!!!! (Apologies to all our female readers.....Only joking...Honest!)
  7. Don't worry, Arkie, who said you have to buy it the instant it is released? Save it for April, buy your wife a bouquet of roses and FC for yourself. She won't notice :D Depends how long you've been married. If I buy my wife flowers the first thing she says is: "What the hell have you gone and done now???" ....Life just ain't fair!!
  8. I love your sound packs, but I strongly have to disagree here. I'm glad they want to protect the hard work and I feel very sorry that people are cheating them, but they have no right to disable software on users systems. Somehow they need to come up with a better solution. Read the message boards, people are really worried about this approach. I think it very likely that zzzspace has read these forums more than you have. As it is you are continuing to complain about Starforce when the original post in this thread (from Wags no less) has stated that they're looking into other options to Starforce for copy protection purposes. Since it has now been confirmed that ED are looking at the options (and bear in mind leaving themselves out of pocket by once again postponing the release of FC) don't you think it's time to wait and see, rather than to continue beating a drum that is, with all due respect, starting to sound rather badly broken by now?
  9. As much as I'm dying to get my hands on this, I'd prefer "ready" to "not" :P
  10. There is one thing I haven't seen mentioned in this discussion. Considering the intensive workout LOMAC gives your PC at the moment, is the currently available PC hardware we have capable of running a sim with all these elements modelled at a high level of realism? At the moment AI aircraft are (usually) somewhat simplifed in their FM's etc, ground unit modelling is (usually) even more simplified. But our systems still take some strain at times. I love the concept, but do wonder how far ahead we'll have to look for hardware that will be able to cope with sim level realism in land, sea and air combat simultaneously, rather than losing the realism factor and ending up with something more comperable to an FPS.
  11. Anyone got a link to the Dangerous Waters website?
  12. Yes, FB/PF's Full Mission Builder is good (possibly better overall than the LOMAC editor). But the LOMAC one (apart from this one item) is far more user friendly.
  13. LOL Do a time management course and you'll be fine. Besides, more an an hour's sleep is just being greedy!! :P As it is I like my sub sims primative. I'm hoping that Silent Hunter III is going to turn out to be as good as it looks when it's released next month.
  14. I'd love to see this. And I'm pretty sure anyone else that makes co-op missions for a squad or public server would love it too! Excellent idea.
  15. I must admit I'd also like to know how ED intend to cover the eventuality of a corupt download. Some info on this from them would be most welcome.
  16. It's an interesting idea. But I agree that linking the padlock to the radar defeats the object of the exercise. The pilot can turn his (or her) head far beyond the gimbal limits of the radar array. So with you suggestion as it stands padlocking a bandit at 90deg off your nose would not be possible. Let alone a bandit passed head on that's now off one of your wings. I fully agree that the padlock system goes too far in it's abilities to track, and with the increasing capabilities of modern PC's it should be possible to refine the system to make it more life-like. Perhaps something along the lines of IL2 where if the bandit remains out of your field of view for a short time the padlock is broken? Not that the system in IL2 is perfect, but it is somewhat better than LOMAC's at present IMHO. As far as "Buy TrackIR" comments go, well You have a point. But surely it would be foolish to expect the combat flight sim designer to rely on third party hardware that's out of their control, to add a neccessary functionality to their product? And as far as the hat switch being pretty well useless after the merge, I fully agree with Coldcrew. My personal solution to that has been to enable mouselook in the conifg and I use the mouse rather than the hatswitch to move my view around. There again this only works for me since I haven't got a HOTAS set up. I would imagine that using mouselook with a HOTAS setup might be inconvenient.
  17. Personally I'd definately prefer a VISA option to using PayPal. I'm quite happy to download it. Although having only just upgraded from a 56k to broadband I can imagine that those still on dial up would rather not go this way. If I was still on dial up I certainly wouldn't want to download something of the size this is bound to be. I would however like some clarification on what the situation would be if the internet connection gets dropped part way through the download. Not having ever bought software via download before, it might be a stupid question, but I would like to have it confirmed that either a dropped network connection or a corrupted download won't result in having paid the money but got nothing in return.
