Two things I'd like to get your opinion on...
nikoel replied to RackMonkey's topic in Virtual Reality
Hey Bud Try uninstalling OpenXR and the OpenXR Tools. Then installing again, it's possible you're running into an issue where you have an older version installed/partially installed. You will be able to grab OpenXR Tools from Windows store. Then go to the right most tab inside the app and install OpenXR Runtime and enable it - it solves a lot of issues. I do not know why this happens but the devs are aware and are working on the solution Do not use FSR/NIS and just run pure 100% resolution and your image will be pretty close to being as clear as the 3 billion dollar Vajo. FSR makes the image worse under all conditions. I would encourage you to reset all the settings to default and just turn up the saturation a little (58 in my case) the difference should be night and day between SteamVR and OpenXR in terms of clarity and sharpness. There is no reason to use sharpening filters and other addons Finally backup and then delete your DCS Saved Games folder (It will also remove your bindings but don't worry you still have them in the old one, so they are easy to get back) Can you also post your graphics settings inside DCS and I might be able to offer advice there It's still early days and we are figuring it out -

I got this right from the get go - and I have the same soft lock in the AH Simple test is that If the difference between SteamVR and OpenXR doesn’t make you go “Wow!” The textures are not working right I can see the individual lines of the fingermarks and scratches on AR coatings of screens and gauges. I can see individual pieces of fluff on the seat of the F16. I can read the test switch panel and the takeoff checklist on the F14. I can see individual bristles of the throttle of the F18. The Viggen is even more Swedish and fabulous -
Perfect Superhuman Auto-hover exists. Caveat it's that it's single player only Bind - 'Active Pause' on your joystick Press whilst doing 160kt in a nose down flight for very effective AAA strafing and targeting. Press again when you see tracers flying straight towards you to instantly resume 160kt. Repeat Profit!

Yeah I am buying it as soon as it's released (provided I can get my dirty paws on one) I am upgrading from a (RiceZen 3900x) so it will be an interesting experiment

Aaaand I was not talking to you per se. Just quoting your comment and expanding on it

I am going to explain this as simply as possible and avoid jargon. This is due to something called Tail Rotor Drift (which causes Roll) that the poster above has referenced. This can be offset by either the pilot or the manufacturer (by naturally tilting the mast in the opposite direction). We can go into physics and aerodynamics but in the end what you need to understand is that the aircraft in a anticlockwise rotor system will naturally want to hang left skid low Because of this you will see the ball offset slightly [to the left of centre]. It's a similar principle to what a builders construction level ruler would do when it's tilted to one side. This can be done by either having a heavier or a lighter ball Therefore when you're in forward flight if you would put the ball in the middle you will be skids level. But remember what you learned above. If you are skids level when the aircraft wants to naturally hang with the left skid low, you're aerodynamically 'flying sideways' (off balance). This will be reflected by a simple string on the nose of the aircraft which will be offset also Now I have never flown the apache but I have taught on many helicopters; and what I will say is that this effect, at least to me, seems to be extremely pronounced in the AH-64. In the same way that Vortex ring is simulated. In reality it can be very difficult to enter even on purpose Having no experience inside the Apache, I am hesitant to call this out as unrealistic and over exaggerated until this is confirmed by a real Apache Pilot. But it's certainly a magnitude higher than what I was expecting

I like to think we get good performance to compensate for us being helicopter pilots I'll be honest with you TED. I have no idea, after I saw the counter above 45FPS I forgot about it and started tuning to a very scientific "good feeling" (smooth, whilst also being realistic and accepting DCS is going to drop a frame or two every now and then). I believe apache is at 45, F14 is at around 70ish, F18 will be close to 90 I am using MSAAx2 (begrudgingly - as you already know the implementation really pumps the breaks on performance even on best available cards, like tying Usain Bolt to a ball and a chain), I am still running low shadows otherwise everything else pretty maxed out (expect for the couple of the sliders) I am not using any sharpening or FSR/NIS or any shader mods. I think they are broken and they give me worse image. This is also why I don't give advice on them as I am poorly positioned to do so. I am glad it's working for you. The only thing I run is Saturation inside ToolKit to get the image nice (around 58ish on the slider) as I found it a little desaturated for my linking If anything I find the image in the G2 still a little "too sharp" and edgy. But hell, I can see the scratches in the AR coating of the flight instruments and I am really enjoying my free upgrade to the "G3"

You must have missed the part where I shot him down a few hundred feet off the deck? Here is worst case scenario. Syria, bunch of SAMs littered across the border, in the chad IKEA meatball machine doing Mach 1 with cluster bombs. in the sister optimisation thread you will find Apache which is much more punishing. Will also take a while for the Youtube gnomes to do their thing -

Thought I post this here as well as the sister thread. I uploaded this quick Demo to showcase what kind of smoothness I get with OpenXR. This has been captured via the screen recording of the mirror, so the image is much worse than what I actually get inside the G2. But since this is a showcase of how smooth the gameplay is, this is not that important Have a look at the merge, notice how even when I snap back the image is stable. This is the same when I cut the bandit off in the vertical Ignore the otherwise mediocre flying and aiming -
Affectionately known as Bitchin' Betty - she is part of the Apache Situational Awareness suite The designers thought that the pilots were more likely to listen to a female voice Having heard the Garmin, Airbus and Boeing dude equivalent, I have to agree

Here is a quick video - Apache on Syria mission (with AMD Capture overhead). The image of course is much better in the G2 as it's compressing it on to the monitor which the software is recording and then youtube takes over and deep-fries it more. However since this is a smoothness demonstration and everyone here knows what a great image OpenXR provides it's neither here or there. I also snapped my head back and forth to show how the image is stable even in those extreme conditions @DirtyMike0330 Gather the boys. BYO Red Prius P.S. Uploaded it a minute before making this post, might be potato quality until Youtube elves come to life F-14 - Notice how there is no ghosting during merge even when I snap the view behind me. There is no ghosting when I vertically cut behind the bandit about halfway through either. (Ignore the otherwise mediocre flying and aim) & Apache on Syria with a bunch of SAMs and other objects:

OpenXR Guide - Deprecated - This time for real (▀̿Ĺ̯▀̿ ̿)
nikoel replied to nikoel's topic in Virtual Reality
No, this is for game play. I believe this is deprecated and is only used for some racing games -
Alright, I have 3900X and 6900XT. Both are maxed out and locked. 4.5ghz for the CPU and 3.8-3.9Ghz for GPU. This helps because neither are boosting and idling. Make sure you’re locking both I do not lock my FPS at any value Go to remove programs windows app. Type in OpenXR - 3 installed programs should show up. Toolkit, Tools and OpenXR itself. Uninstall all three Next install OpenXR Tools and Toolkit Open Tools and navigate to the right most menu to install OpenXR Runtime and make OpenXR the runtime Tell me how you get on. Note this is different from what you’ve been doing because it also uninstalls OpenXR Runtime that was installed on your computer before you installed tools and toolkit for the first time Also are you cranking MSAA or any settings? Your issue is that you’re CPU limited 30% GPU utilisation is a classic case of the GPU waiting for frames to render by the CPU OpenXR Toolkit has a feature to reset itself to default. When you open the app (windows app - *NOT* Virtual one inside VR) it will tell you which buttons to press when you launch DCS and bring up the virtual menu something like ALT+F1 F2 F3 (can’t quite recall)

Hey Brochachi I do not lock any FPS. I let er' rip at maximum. Maximum for both my processor which is locked and GPU (which is within 100mhz bracket to maximum) The 45FPS was a suggestion - I begrudgingly also put advice about Re-re-reprojection even though I hate it -

There is an experimental version of OpenKneeboard, which has the same peculiar installation instructions as OpenXR did when we first started; fortunately also with the same much better results once you're through the jungle Have a go! https://discord.gg/NUGnurg9 look at the pins -

G1 users are wondering why their headsets are showing 2160 x 2160 in SteamVR at 100%. Whilst G2 is around 3160 x 3090 - ish My understanding is that the early high res WMR headsets like the G1 reported their resolutions differently to SteamVR. It was a lot lower! This was to get good performance on the CPUs GPUs of that era... you still benefited from the lesser screen door effect and sharpness (like running a G2 at 50%) but were able to run them. It was still miles ahead of what the competition was offering and everyone was none-the-wiser Regardless; the laws of physics do not change. If you want the "native" image that accounts for lens distortion you want to run your headset at 140% of the panel resolution. You can lower this slider, or pump it higher to your hearts desire. However this is what engineers at HP, Valve, Microsoft and OpenXR have envisioned to be the resolution to aim for -
Hey bud 100% OpenXR is 100% SteamVR At 70% you have been undersampling your G2. Since both are identical, this is the case for SteamVR and OpenXR. You have not been getting the image that HP and Steam have designed the headset for In order to account for the pincushion distortion that the lenses produce you should run the slider at 100%. Which is around 140% of the resolution of the screens inside the headset. Therefore 140% = Native 100% on the slider Anything lower is undersampling. Which is okay as long as you know you’re doing that to claw back performance If you want to learn more, here is a gentleman who had the same assumption and made a video to correct this Glad it’s working out for you, enjoy OpenXR P.S. You can check your final per eye resolution by launching DCS and then navingating inside OpenXR Tools to the second tab. It’s about half way down

YES! I KNEW IT!!!!! -
OpenXR takes over by default as long as you’ve placed the correct files in the correct folder and are launching DCS directly. There are some oculus shenanigans that users have gotten used to that I don’t understand, you can also use Skatezilla to launch VR

What you actually can’t stand is, after getting shafted by graphic card prices, you now have a 3090 with a liquid nitrogen loop - and babes in bikinis topping up the tank; thinking that you should have the best. You do in theory. But, you can squeeze a lot of 0.5-1% improvements which by themselves don't do much, but when combined can create large gains and even more if you are willing to put in the effort @DirtyMike0330and the boys - Ill take a screen capture of a dogfight with rapid snap backs looks at 9/3 o clock so you can judge yourself what is smooth and what is not. I’ll try to also capture actual footage out of the headset I will pre-phase that Reprojection is of course smoother because you’re locked into 90FPS, however there are no stutters except for the occasional DCS hiccup that happens no matter which way you’re looking. Also keep in mind that I’m running a lack lustre 3900X which [should] put me at a 15-20% disadvantage to you in the processor department Also there is confusion in regards to Reprojection. Your GPU is made to render either 45FPS or 30FPS irrespective of what it can actually render. The additional frames that you would have without MR and those that are missing are thrown away and replaced with jank guesswork. This means that you’re simply getting one real frame and one guessed frame followed by real frame etc. There no difference between Reprojection with a GPU which can potentially render 50FPS or 85FPS at the same settings. Both produce exactly the same image -

I think enjoying DCS forgetting about shaders and other VR snake oils occasionally updating OpenXR/Composite/Toolkit until Vulcan comes out along with multithreading will give you the most amount of enjoyment To answer your question more directly - I now think that there is merit in both. It’s up to you which you prefer. OpenXR has unlocked the true potential of my setup On principle however, current MSAA implementation must die and be replaced with something else. I do try to go out of my way to avoid it (even if I end up running it anyway)
