Final thread before purchase!
Thorvald replied to Conure's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Almost forgot, check the last two characters of the video cards part number if you are buying EVGA. -AR means lifetime warranty and can partake in the step up program in case you want to move up within 90 days to a better one -TR means limited (2 year?) warranty and no step up. I just bought two cards and got royally screwed on both of them, they were both -TR cards... Even the GTX580. Cheers Tim -
Actually there may be some free motherboards around since a lot of people have moved away from the 775 socket. I personally have a basically brand new Asus Striker motherboard you can have for the price of shipping, it's been sitting in it's box for ages. I moved to the 790i almost right away and never really used the Striker. Cheers Tim

You'll be just fine with the Q6600! Just need to do a few basic things: 1. Over clock to at least 3.2 or 3.4Ghz, dead easy, just crank fsb up and CPU voltage to 1.5 for most chips. Water-cooling or good fan recommended, just watch the temps. I Personally water cool as it was fun to do and very cheap (my starter kit for CPU only was less than $150). 4 Ghz is fairly easy too but I'm happy with 3.4 myself. 2. Gtx 460 put my machine into nearly max on all settings and when full screen, I had well over 50fps. Windowed mode was a little less but tha may be fixed later in better builds of A10. I could not crank MSAA but still was very impressed. 3. Bump up to 6 or 8th of ram, my machine eats just over 4gb running the OS, A10 and some other tools. 4. If your motherboard is ancient, look for a used deal on an Nforce 780i or 790i, killer boards for the Q6600. 5. Install Windows 7 Pro 64bit if you have not already, then you can run A10 in 64 bit mode and enjoy a much more stable OS and some more fps as well! --- I've now moved up to the Gtx 580 which then allowed me to max absolutely everything and get well over 60fps in full screen mode. I'm personally waiting for the Sandybridge and whatever new top board Evga comes out with. For now the Q6600 is still doing great! Cheers Tim

I have a much easier option... HELIOS! ;-) Then you can see all the instruments without any issue. Tim

God luv ya! Not that I have the cash to spend but it's too cool of a project not to jump in! Cheers Tim

Well I think he has already expressed that he is not interested in making kits. However, we can establish a comprehensive shopping list and suppliers, then we can all order the parts as required and build our own. Cheers Tim

Bahahaha I've played with that too... except once I try to fall in behind the wingman he then tries desperately to become my wingman again.... the neverending chasing the tail in the circle resulting is hilarious...

Agreed. After being burned far too many times with their crappy drivers back in the 80's and 90's by ATI (I lived not too far from their main Office and had friends who worked there), I swore never to touch touch their products again. Thankfully the Monster 3Dfx came along and the rest is history ;-) So even though they may have a good card now, I MUCH prefer Nvidia's track record of drivers and the ability to go back to older drivers when the new ones "kack out" for a certain program or game. Apples and Oranges, AMD and Intel, Chevy and Ford, BMW and Ducati.... everyone has their own personal preference... Cheers Tim P.S. Besides, Nvidia products just look cooler ;-)

Boot, if we want to order that same Front Panel you designed, can we just quote some order/code to them? No sense us all designing another panel when yours looks great! Cheers Tim

Multi-monitor set-up guide & help (unofficial)
Thorvald replied to MadTommy's topic in Multi-Display Bugs
Weird Ripcord, it worked perfectly for me. When I installed the Beta 4 patch, it didn't touch my custom monitor file and it just worked straight away (after changing res and monitor in Options). I had to reinstall Beta 4 from scratch (full install) and then copied over my monitor profile, again worked perfectly. Of course it only works in Windowed mode but I assume you long since knew that ;-) I'm running Win 7 64 Bit as using the 64 bit beta with TrackIR 64 bit. Cheers Tim P.S. Don't fret too much, I'm in the same boat with Helios. I'm still getting a 10 to 15 fps hit when running Helios but everyone else solved this with Beta 6.... so I'm the odd man out there lol. -
Agreed, great idea! Or add some basic voice recognition :-) But I'd rather just use the hat. Cheers Tim

Isn't the CDU only text information only? (not fully familiar with the device since it's "off to the side" lol). If so, it would be easier to beg ED to simply export the text string to a file/port or something as it gets updated so we don't get the perf. hit of drawing it. Then import the string into whatever app is required and re-do the formatting.

Multi-monitor set-up guide & help (unofficial)
Thorvald replied to MadTommy's topic in Multi-Display Bugs
Thought I'd pass on a performance tip that I recently learned thanks to Craig (Helios fame). I had two monitors setup on top of each other, each one going to it's own video card and the MFD's being displayed on the lower monitor. Once I moved the second monitor to the spare connector on the main card (both monitors on one card), my FPS jumped huge (A10 no longer had to draw the main screen on one card and the MFD's on another). Ah flash, that explains why it would not come up on the iPad. Will try on PC tomorrow. -
EVGA Superclocked GTX 570...
Thorvald replied to Atomic978's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Great thanks! My reference missing so far is: Instant Action - Easy East Georgia Spring Current running Medium, HDR On, all else off (TSSA, MSAA) to get best fps with my setup. I take a reading paused looking up at the sun and then a general avg fps while flying towards the first target. Thanks again Tim -
EVGA Superclocked GTX 570...
Thorvald replied to Atomic978's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Can someone do a test with the GTX 570 but in Windowed mode? I'm trying to determine if I'm going to try a 460/470/570/580 for my primary card. In Fullscreen, my tri-sli 8800GTX's do just fine. However in Windowed mode, it drops down to almost half performance. Just curious to see what a 3.0Ghz+ machine with a 570 will do in Windowed. Thanks Tim -
Yep, this has been the strangest torrent I have ever seen. Speed is all over the map and there are lots of seeders. Guess there are lots of leeches :-) Once it's done, I'll leave it running seeding over the next few days so people can get it quicker. Cheers Tim

Interesting... even with my Tri SLI it is a dog in the cockpit on the ramp. I'll watch this thread with interest (still have to try latest beta).
-
Does A10 have support for SLI yet? I have triple SLI 8800's and it's a dog at present (I assume optimization issues due to beta for now).

Here is a pic of one version for the Cougars. The ones I have are similar but in black and are more "molded" to the shape of the throttle. http://www.hotas.gr/content/view/65/35/lang,en/ Looks like a nice cottage industry for someone :-)

Hopefully someone will make nice ones like the black fleece covers with the remove before flight tags that I bought a while back for my cougar. Wonder if that fellow is still around?

???how does TRIPLEHEADtoGO performs???
Thorvald replied to JEFX's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I have TH2GO and three 22" monitors. Yes it is totally messed up but as we all know, it's a beta and a work in progress. However, these is a temp. work around. A kind fellow has a modified D3D DLL that fixes the FOV calculation (originally for Black Shark but works fine with A10) and then you can adjust the FOV up to 179 or so as I recall. Works "ok" for me but I've found the current version of A10 to be too buggy to actually enjoy yet (10fps on a triple SLI 3GHZ 8Gig ram machine is nuts)... but then again, like everyone states, it's a beta, not optimized etc etc etc etc etc.... Once the full multi-monitor support comes out, they may fix the D3D issue they have with Black Shark and A10 so we don't need the hacked DLL. Cheers Tim -

Love it! Now if only we could dump a few of these F35's we are buying and order some A10C's :-)
