  1. But that's Independence Day day. Burn the heretics!:alien::ufo::alien:
  2. You can make the zoom as fast or slow as you like. I have it on a slider, it responds instantly to commands. But putting in 3 quick keys for 3 levels of zoom (in, default, out) would be helpful for those without a bunch of sliders/rotaries. What will be an issue is the view direction responsiveness when zoomed in. Just like with TIR, a precision or pause mode will be required when zoomed in to stabilize it if nothing else. It may already have this, I don't have one of the dev models so I don't know. In any case, VR is definitely not for everyone. Motion sickness is a real problem with these devices and a lot of people simply can't cope with them physically. I've read people can be trained to handle simulation sickness with practice, so it will probably work with VR too. But I also don't see the average gamer going to the trouble to train themselves not puke on their keyboard every 5 minutes. More likely, they'll just use a normal monitor.
  3. It works exactly the same as it does on an ordinary monitor. The center of the viewing arc is enlarged while the margins disappear off screen.
  4. Never even heard of them before, so probably not. :)
  5. Don't worry about that, I already have a song in mind for my first F-14 vid that I'm sure will get slammed as being massively heretical.:gun_smilie:
  6. Very sensible, +1.
  7. I don't think it was actually announced, it just happened to appear as an "F-5E WIP" icon at the bottom of the main menu screen and also in the special tab in the options menu during the live stream. It strongly suggests someone is seriously working on the F-5E, but I don't think we have true confirmation just yet. It is #1 on my western fighter wishlist though, so I'm happy.
  8. That's different.:photo:
  9. I think Cobra said they basically rebuilt the MiG-21 from scratch over the course of a year. It's also worth keeping in mind that it was done as a side job, all of them had a day job at the time too. That said, I doubt the F-5E is going to be released soon. Though ED could probably release it in 3-4 months if they really wanted to (provided they have permission from Northrop), I don't think they are in any sort of hurry. I'm guessing a 2016 release maybe, possibly 2017. The F-5E's first flight was in 1972 and was produced through the 1980's. But yeah, it generally gets lumped into the 1960's category along with the MiG-21Bis (also a 1970's fighter).
  10. I didn't notice that either, good catch.
  11. Taxiways already have signs and lights on our Georgia map and yes, they are accurate/work.
  12. Good stream overall but there are some things I'd like to see next time: 1) Hoover Dam from the downstream side, preferably in something slow. I want a good look at that concrete cliff face since I'm sure many of us will slam into it at some point. :D 2) The craters from underground nuclear tests. Drive a tank through them or land a chopper in one. I realize they probably aren't super detailed, but the fact that they are there at all is a massive surprise. 3) The strip from a hover or very slow speed (maybe 50km/h) so details can be seen. All the other videos show it at a distance or with the aircraft blowing through it at mach 1.
  13. It's possible a viewer recorded it, I considered doing so but my upload speeds are so awful that I decided not to. In any case, I can try to list off what all you missed in terms of info gleaned from the video and wags talking. 1) Greyed out "F-5E WIP" icon shown in the list of background icons on the main menu screen. Might be an upcoming module or maybe just a background for the NTTR map, who knows. I hope it's a full module though, love the F-5 :). MiG-29 icon also present, presumably for the recently confirmed FC3 MiG-29 stand alone. 2) New AI options in the mission editor, you can tell them to not drop their payload when shot at, what range to fire missiles (max, middle, certain, random), where to attack ground units (or not to) and some general rules such as AB usage and RTB on low fuel. The mission editor is a lot better looking. It looks like a satellite view of the map, rather than the topographic map we currently deal with. 3) Graphics options are largely the same, but there was an added drop down menu for aircraft scaling. I can't remember the exact names of the options, but I think there were 3, with none being the top and I think one was called multiplier. Not sure on this, it was only a quick glance. With it on the strongest setting, enemy planes were clearly visible at 10km. On my end they looked like blurry dots but twitch compresses that stuff. I don't know how they looked on his machine other than visible. Also saw some new smoke effects off of missiles and flares. They looked good to me, the smoke can best be described as poofy. It also lingered longer. Contrails were also much improved, they fade in behind the aircraft rather than instantly materializing at full intensity. Wags mentioned new clouds being made too, but they were not shown. 4) Terrain LoDs transition smoothly and large buildings can be seen from far away. I never saw the strip pop up out of nothing, it was always there so long as I saw vegas. Same deal for other big things. Only the little residential houses disappeared as distance increased. 5) Some surprising details are on the map such as the craters from underground nuclear tests. These were only seen at high altitude this stream, I'm curious what they look like close up. There are also a lot of cars/trucks/buses in Vegas. The amount of stuff shown is something unseen before in flight sims. His system appeared to run it fine but it did stutter in a few places. The stutters seemed unrelated to what was in view though, might have just been twitch. 6) The main menu, mission editor and flying part are all one program now, going from one to the next was very quick. It also CTD'd constantly the first 15 minutes of the stream. It seemed to be related to that particular airfield since as soon as he got away from it, the stream went uninterrupted for the remaining hour or more.
  14. It was a very good stream overall. Showing off the new scaling system (a surprise) and the AI options in the mission editor were especially nice. It's hard to tell just what the scaling will look like on my end due to twitch cutting resolution to 720p and the inevitable loss from streaming itself, but I could see the target dots reasonably well despite it. This should make WVR fighting far more viable and solve my biggest gripe about DCS currently. The map itself is fairly nice. It is desolate but has a lot of interesting areas. I was hoping for Wags to do a split-s and go back to hoover dam so we could see it from the downstream side. Guess I'll have to wait till next time. And yeah, there are definitely going to be some air races along the Colorado. The other area I wanted to see closer up (preferably in a chopper or tank) is the nuclear testing area. I want a good look at some of the bigger craters, mostly because that type of thing would be nothing but a decal anywhere else. I'm betting they are 3d on this map. On a final note, those open ended hangers are an obvious target for some barnstorming in the slimmer planes.
  15. I would love the F-5E. It's currently #1 on my wishlist for western fighters, above even the F-18 and F-14 already in development.
  16. If your concern is how good it will be on 104th, I'm betting it will be the #1 fighter even if we include the upcoming EF2000 and Mirage 2k. It doesn't need AIM-120's.
  17. C++ does complicated math just fine. I majored in physics and used C++ in many of my junior/senior level classes for all the really awful equations that had to be solved. I wasn't calculating flight models in those courses, but the problems dealt with were every bit as complicated. I've always found C++ fairly intuitive for this type of thing. That said, I'm not a professional programmer so I'm only familiar with a few languages. Fortran is not among them.
  18. This bug should be deliberately left in. It's too good to fix.
  19. Search youtube for DCS MiG-15 tutorial, that should get you through most things quickly. As for missions and campaigns, sadly you have to make your own at the moment or hop onto one of the Korean War servers in MP. I don't consider that level of content satisfactory, but it's what we have at the moment.
  20. DCS 2 does seem unlikely to be released this year so I'm inclined to agree. Also, how will no DCS 2 effect LNS's release plans this year?
  21. Thanks for the update, I'm particularly pleased to have official confirmation on updating the rest of the FC3 planes to more modern standards. It's been long assumed, but official confirmation is always nice. :) I'd also like to thank you for giving an explanation as to where things stand in regards to DCS2. It certainly isn't what many here were hoping for, but I appreciate the honesty.
  22. That's why I stated very clearly and repeatedly that it only works if they are actively emitting. From a practical standpoint, the obvious way to go about it would be to use anti-radiation until IR or ARH lock.
  23. Any EM emission can be detected and tracked. There is no way even on a theoretical level to change this. As such, a missile that homes on a target's own EM emissions is possible. There are some practical concerns of course, but an air to air version of a HARM could certainly be done if one were so inclined. The type of radar the target aircraft uses is completely irrelevant. It can always be detected and tracked if it is emitting. The same is true of communications radios, datalinks and anything else that is actively emitting EM radiation. Additionally, approximate range information can be acquired via triangulation. Though not nearly as accurate as other methods, it is completely jam proof. In fact, attempting to jam someone doing this would only make their job easier, as it increases the signal strength. I'm not making any claims on how practical such an air to air missile would be. Anti-radiation missiles work fine against slow moving or stationary surface radars. But trying to hit a jet fighter going 1000km/h or more would be much more difficult.
  24. I'm satisfied with the info coming out, though I have to wonder why the third of three modules planned for release is the only officially announced one. There has to be an interesting story behind that decision.:)
  25. Obviously it's an F-6 (aka F4D Skyray) or the other F-6 (aka J-6 and MiG-19).
