Community A-4E-C v2.3 (May 2025)

Hello all, Not sure if the A-4 pilots here have seen the new Carrier CVA-31. It's part of the VWV mod and is compatible with the A-4 for AI use and should work for player take off and landings as well. I say "should" because well, you know how mods can be. But I have done both catapult launches and landings. I've not tested in MP at all so I have no idea if that is working. Anyway check it out if you'd like to try flying from one of the Essex Class Carriers refitted for jets. The A-4s get the 12 spots on the port side while the F-8s get the 12 on starboard and aft deck Only tested with AI, but player can spawn on the cats and deck so it should work for single player. The Ship has not been test multi player at all as far as I know Also here's a video showing some features of the VWV mod. The A-4s have a few cameos in the video, mostly towards the end. Enjoy -

I was talking about the "stock" DCS RBS-15 for the Viggen I think. But now I want to do a bunch of anti-ship missile tests and see what the latest stuff is doing I need to update to your latest packs but I missed my chance the other day as the links were all overloaded. But once I get updated I'll do some testing with the anti-ship missiles as I could swear the stock RBS-15 did run a snake pattern on it's way to target. -

I'm 99% sure I remember seeing the RBS-15 snaking on it's way to a ship. But it's been a few version of DCS since I have really looked at the Anti-Ship missiles, but I'm pretty sure they did have some defensive maneuvers before -

Consider this a chance to learn something . There are great descriptions of most if not all the assets at Currenthill's website. With all of the information provided at Currethill MilSim..... It should take all of 30 seconds and a little research to sort out what asset is the "correct" one for any mission. -
Good news is that the A-4 and F/A-18 Lot 20 can both take off and land from CVA-31. I only tested runway start but parking hot should work. F-8 should be able to land but I never did hook a wire, only crashes and bolters, but it also may not be able to hook up. It will spawn on the deck/catapult just fine but is unable to hook up to the shuttle. If the issue is what I think it is there is unfortunately no quick fix so I'd consider the F-8 an AI asset with limited player capabilities for now

Hmmm. Well I've only tried the F-8 on CVA-31 so I'll check the ship with another aircraft. But very curious to see how the F-8 behaves on the Forrestal. I did not know there was even an issues with the F-8 and carriers. I just assumed the problem was with CVA-31 after I flew through the deck while trying to land. . But I'll see if I can figure it out

I don't think any helicopters can be made to do the AWACS missions (AEW) in DCS. I was able to convert a few planes to the AEW role but Helicopters were a no go. I'm not sure if this is because there is no AWACS mission type for helicopters in ME or because there is no AWACS attribute for helos. Or both. But AEW helicopters should be added to the DCS wish list at some point. There are now many nice Carrier mods that do use AEW helicopter in real life so it would be nice to have that in game

As far as I can tell there are still a few issues to be worked out with the Bon Homme Richard to make her ready for player aircraft. Also the 36 plane deck layout has a few issues with how some planes align on the catapults. The 24 layout does as well but they are not as bad. I will try and update the the 36 layout with the better cat alignment from 24 soon.

That's awesome because while working on the carrier CVA-31 I recalled you had a few great mid 60s to early 70s warships (some are now in the yard). But I dug through my mod archive and came up with a couple pics. Here's CGN-25 Bainbridge and FF-1079 Bowen with CVA-14 and CVA-34 and their Allen M. Sumner-class destroyers while getting resupplied from USS Sacramento. Carriers and Sumner-class destroyer (USS Maddox) are from the Vietnam War Vessels Mod. So yes the more escort options the better. And many thanks in advance I'm going to try and do a few liveries for the USS Bowen as she's a Knox class so there are plenty of options but USS Bainbridge was the only ship of her class so no livery options there. -
So thanks to Seabat we now have liveries for 6 Essex class refits. Apparently in 1962 CVA-16 Lexington was re-designated CVS-16 (Carrier, Anti Submarine) So I did a fictional runway lua for her with 12 helicopter, 8 S-2 Trackers and 12 F-8 Crusader for self defense.

Interesting? I could not find any pictures of the French ones with the dual launchers. But as you said their use of the AIM-9 seemed to be short lived. I did find some pics of the 530 mounted down lower on the fuselage, I think I had one mounted on the lower rail. And I also made the 530 mountable on the pylon even though that’s not correct. But my “F-8s” are a bit different from the Mod here as the one here is focused mainly on the Vietnam era F-8E

The French version really should have a separate/different model. As far as I can tell the French never used the dual rail mount for heat seekers. But just loading one rail is not a bad compromise. I do have some other LUAs for the French version. They are not officially part of this mod but PM if you’d like to try them.

No hurry, but good to know they sent ok. PM when you dust her off. There are the 3 options for the spawn points and other weapon/sensor updates based on either your next gen frigate or CH modern USA ships. I can't recall but I need to make sure it's using your RIM 162 model and not Mr. Currenthills. Only issue with the V-22 is he darn engine pod/wings rotate down and the props hit the ground on engine start/short take off. So only the "parking hot animation is correct. Ramp start uncontrolled also looks correct but basically make then static. If you trigger an engine start they will rotate down and hit the deck. But other than that it works well. I have the lua updated so fuel load determines vertical or shortt take off modes. You can find my updated lua and info in the Modern Aircraft MOD thread. Quick question about the Rebel cargo ship........ How do we know you left the missiles under the new tarps???????? . Asking for a friend (They look amazing by the way ) -

Not sure if you got the last bunch of files I did for the America class. But I will send them again I just wish I could get the V-22 to work 100% on the deck. It's pretty close but still not perfect from cold start. Thanks to bbtbmb I was able to use his "Well Deck" texture to create the correct well deck look for the upcoming LHA-8 and 9 Hulls of the America class. But as always Admiral you've been putting out some great stuff. Can't wait to load up the new Rebel cargo ship -
I'm not able to to the 3d model stuff atm, that's the problem. But I did not know about the extra wire But if I'm ever able to get the new model made ready for DCS I will certainly check those details. Note, This model was always meant to be replaced. Unfortunately that proved a bit more difficult than planned

I've not taken a close look at it in awhile but I'm unsure what placement issues you are taking about with the deck. Are the cat/JBD in the wrong locations per the real ship? I do recall thinking the cat textures were a little off at one point but I thought the general location of things was correct. I'll look at pictures of the Ford and see what's up. But if there is anything you can do to improve the look of the ship by all means go for it. She's always been a bit of an ugly duckling but I enjoy having it as an AI asset and she's doing "ok" in that role. I did come across some landing issues with a large group of F-35C landing after a hour plus long mission. Last time I check the F/A-18 was landing correctly but the F-35 pilots seemed to get a bit confused

There will not be any changes to the model/textures until someone wants take on making the new model I have DCS ready. I will eventually sort out the basic 3d model/texture stuff myself but learning that software/skill set is not an easy thing .

I've update the spawn spot behind the island, Although after looking at the picture I'm unsure if that's a spawn point or parking spot ? I tested the new spawn point and the take off /taxi seems ok. It's still a bit messy for the last few planes but it works. I'll try and clean up the taxi routes /catapult selection soon. I did make a small adjustment to the parking spot behind the island (based on the new spawn point) but I've not tested it yet. Here is the updated runway lua. Just overwrite the current file in the scripts folder ford_RunwaysAndRoutes.lua

You can ask Hawkeye60 if he can post the models. But I think the current mod is not working with 2.9. The last update broke some prop planes doing carrier take offs. Also I'm having trouble getting the bomb bay doors to open. I had them working but then broke them . But once I get that sorted I'll post the lua files.

Thanks for the update and sorry for the late reply. I had a nasty bit of food poisoning and haven't really been up for modding. Getting back to things now. I should be able to adjust that spawn point. As for the TACAN stuff I'll start looking into it. I have no idea how it's supposed to work but I'll dust off the hotas and do some testing with the Nimitz class soon. I'm also seeing the same results with the RWR so I'll look into that as well. So I’ve made some good progress on the ai version of the F-8 Crusader, I think. Files have been sent for review and Hopefully they work for others as well as they are on my system And yes, a proper British Fixed Wing Jet for the Hermes will be great.
