On your right side you have 73 switches and circuit breakers. In front of you you have a combination of 97 switches, circuit breakers and instruments. On your left side you have 77 switches and circuit breakers, including your throttle and engine controls. Nearly all of these have functionality. I bought this aircraft in the recent Fatherland sale. I haven't been able to stop flying it!:D Totally addictive!:joystick: As a historic aircraft it perhaps has no equal. Designed over 60 years ago and capable of Mach 2+ on a single engine! If you like challenging flight simulations (as well as all the features of the DCS Mission planner) then this is one for you. Plan some missions with the GCI units and you can recreate some accurate scenarios. Even test the theory that it only takes 60 seconds from entering the cockpit to scramble.;) Regards, David

Recently found that the radio for groups is not functioning. Base selection appears non functional in both maps. Wingman radio calls appear ok. Also AWACS is ok. Will the updates for radios and the Anti ship codes make it into the next patch? Just a great simulation! Cheers

I wonder if they could use the code from the KB countermeasures pod and the jammer pod from the Viggen? I know they aren't the same, but perform similar functions (apart from the advanced ELINT version) and perhaps could do the job? I find myself flying the Viggen and the Mig 21 mostly in DCS.....Superb Sims!

My system is Intel and Nvidia, like many I guess. I have Windows 7 Pro. I have no issues and own all the modules in 1.5.6 and 2.0. How many are using Windows 10 and have no issues? At a guess, I would say the issues are with Windows 10 o/s, perhaps someone on Windows 10 with no problems could post? There must be a commonality to the errors?

Ground Controlled intercept began in ww1. Is well supported in DCS by two ground GCI units which may be strategically placed on the mission editor map. In the Mig 21, with no look down radar capability, its essential to know the altitude of the enemy. This realistically models the Russian tactic of using GCI to verbally guide the Mig 21 interceptors into the target. A concise definition of GCI.... "Ground-controlled interception (GCI) is an air defence tactic whereby one or more radar stations or other observational stations are linked to a command communications centre which guides interceptor aircraft to an airborne target. This tactic was pioneered during World War I by the London Air Defence Area organization, which became the Royal Air Force's Dowding system in World War II." Modern generation fighters (definitely not the Mig 21) use data link from AWACS and each other aircrafts radars within a flight. Apart from the fact that's classified, we don't have any aircraft capable of this in DCS.....yet:music_whistling: So our DCS AWACS use verbal BRA guidance. So for now, we have GCI modelled. You can even add a GCI template to your missions, mentioned in the Mig 21 manual. Regards David

I bought the Mig 21 in the recent Fatherland sale. Since then I can not put it in the hangar! Its totally addictive and flies well in both maps. There are over 100 switches in the cockpit, at first they look daunting, but are a satisfying challenge to learn. In fact, once you can fly circuits and navigate PRMG/RSBN, or NDB, you then must learn all the radar modes and weapon systems. These are all very challenging. Fortunately xxjohn'sxx videos are a good starting point. The manual is superb and has excellent illustrations, with high definition annotated cockpit photos available in the simulation folder. The lack of look down radar is another challenge, but with the GCI radar units strategically placed, you get to fly it the way it was intended....with GCI, giving B.R.A. There is more satisfaction in prosecuting a successful attack, in this aircraft, then any other...in my humble opinion. The addictive nature becomes so engrossing that recently I stalled my car at some traffic lights and started to reach on my left panel, for the "in flight engine start circuit breaker"!! :joystick: A great simulation.:D Regards David

Interesting battle tactics in the Viggen! If using iron bombs, against SAM/AAA defended mechanized infantry, a low level <10m ingress at M.8 with high drag bombs for a one pass. The BK90, always, but if your in multi player, I guess they need fixing. I agree about the Hog! However, with any kind of air force against you, your not going to last for very long at 250 knots at GBU release altitude....Mig 21 fodder:-) The Viggen was the Sweedish Tornado. Designed to repel a Cold War WP attack, against known targets or FEBA. So its in fast and low (Mig 21 can't see you with no look down, GCI won't see you below 40m) and hit the target, then out fast and low. Only advanced Russian AWACS may pick you up, then a SU27/Mig29 may get a vector on your route? But by that time you should be back over your lines. Great aircraft simulation. We also need the anti ship codes fixing....? Cheers David

Great advice. I have the X55 and just use DCS key binds. Its best to learn the aircraft and bind what you need as HOTAS. You are your own systems engineer, making the aircraft work for your setup. Definitely better than learning someone else's set up. I have an old joystick plugged in to a spare USB. I use that as the Radar stick, T0, T1 and TV from the trigger #1 and #2. The stick x,y, is bound to the Radar. This frees up the X55 stick and simulates the Viggens Radar stick.:) A big plus is the clickable cockpit. The Master Mode and the Weapons Mode selectors benefit from being looked at and clicked. The inputs into the computer likewise. Add a Voice Attack profile for radio commands and your there! Cheers.

Hello, I am a fairly new pilot on the Mig 21. If you look at the Mig 21 radio frequencies in the mission editor, pick one, say Ch. 1 (I use 0 for wingman). Then type a frequency in. In the AWACS aircraft, enter the frequency you have in your Ch 1 Mig radio, in the edit section(set frequency). Just so the AWACS is transmitting on the same frequency your Mig has for Ch 1. AWACS will give you bearings range and altitude...BRA, to any bandits. Alternatively, and more realistically for the Mig 21, place some GCI early warning radar units in your mission map. These ground based GCI units will give you Bearing, Range and Altitude. These were important for Mig 21 drivers, given the very limited AA radar in the Mig. With no look down capability, get your altitude wrong and you won't see any bandits! You can see the range of the GCI units in the mission editor, so you can cover the entire map. Incidentally, the GCI units always seem to be "tuned".....must be on guard? By the way, I wish I had bought the Mig 21 earlier.....what a superb simulation! Regards David

I recently purchese the Albatross in the Fatherland sale. (along with the Mig 21 First installed in 1.5.6 then into NTTR. I have no problems at all in either map. Even have all the NTTR beacons working in RSBN from a mod by Max, here; https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=3081813#post3081813 Could it be some sort of Anti Virus interfering with your install? Regards David
-
Excellent work! All working! We can fly almost anywhere in NTTR in the Albatross, as well as the Mig 21. Only a couple of things. Nellis could do with RSBN/PRMG and/or a Beacon. Other than that, its possible to fly to any coordinates in NTTR using good old heading and distance from RSBN....Very Nice! Cheers David

I am sure we would all like to have super clouds. However, I think that we would all require a heavy duty GPU, (Titan)in order to render high resolution clouds and a combat simulator running fast enough to suspend disbelief. But hey, maybe ED can find a way of rendering clouds without using lots of video memory? :-)

Track viewing Mig 21 crashes and other oddities in 2.0.5
Xxx replied to Gunny Highway's topic in MiG-21Bis
Yes its always a bit off. Have you got TACVIEW? For DCS its invaluable! http://www.tacview.net/ -
I have trouble assigning my x55. Recently purchased the Mig 21 and noticed that in the middle of a mission, if I try and assign/re assign buttons, no assignment is possible. Also when quitting out of the key assignment window I get a game CTD? Only just started happening with the Mig 21? Edit. Happening in 1.5.6.

Perhaps you could look at the possibility of a mobile RSBN unit? That would not only be realistic but would add more options to the mission planner! As territory is captured, mobile RSBN are used at captured airfields:-) Regards David.

I have just bought the Mig 21, so am experimenting with load outs and training. Currently I have not tried in NTTR map, but in 1.5.6, I can use the R60M and the R60 against all targets. I have the R60M on the outboard pylons 1,2 with 2 each. I have the 60 on pylons 3,4 with 2 each. Good lock, good tone and launch either single or pairs. I will test in the NTTR. Regards David

Hello there. Yes its runway 09. RSBN works ok. The Channel numbers match what I see in the .lua but there is no PRMG signal received in the L39? I figured one of you more knowledgeable buy a would know? I don't mess with any lua file! I can look at them but don't fiddle. Regards David
-
Here's some fun with the Viggen in the new NTTR map. Cheers. David
-
Yes, the RSBN is working. I see the "approach through clouds" from a distance to 30 Km, then when switching to landing mode, when PRMG should take over, but there's no signal? Its not the L39, since I have PRMG glideslope and localiser at the other so equipped airfields. The beacon number 38 is correct in the .lua. So it must be the location coordinate is off. I have absolutely no luck with lua scripts and especially map coordinates, so its no use me trying to fiddle about with the lua. The Mig 21 is spot on at all the airfields, for both RSBN/PRMG. But as I now realise, LN coded the functions into the Mig 21, so it doesn't use the map coordinates. Perhaps thats why they did it that way?:music_whistling: Regards David

Thanks for that. This is superb simulation....just buzzed Tromp Tower in the strip and I have never seen such smooth flight at 100 meters and 600 kph....super smooth! :D Thanks LN and ED! Regards David.

I have the latest NTTR (2.0.5.2576) installed and have a problem with the LOLA coordinate input. I am ignoring the first Longitude number, as I read, but the position is way off. e.g. Tonopah, at W1164700 N 374728. Entered as W164700 N 374728. The position is some 137 Km due west? I have no other issues with the latest Nevada upgrade. Regards David
-
Just a small issue I noticed. There is no PRMG Glideslope/Localiser at Krasnodar Centre? The RSBN works as before, but I can not get any PRMG signal. I checked the frequencies in the Mod, and they show Ch. 38 for PRMG as they did in the original file. Or is this just me? Thanks. David

Some great mods out there! Thanks!

This is all fascinating! I picked up your mod after reading the L39 thread on the Caucuses RSBN navigation issue. Hawk has now done the entire 1.5 map for RSBN in the L39. Interestingly, I had no idea the Mig21 uses its own, aircraft specific, code for its RSBN/PRMG navigation. I picked up both the Mig21 and L39 in the recent sale, so I am type rating on both at the moment!:-) I will spend some time this weekend with both maps and both aircraft....great fun! Looks like the implementation of a mobile RSBN can not really be done for the Mig 21, since its the aircraft itself that has the navigation code built in? But the L39 perhaps could use a map based mobile RSBN system. But that precludes the use of the Mig 21 in an historic "cold war" type mission, where the Russians would deploy their mobile PRNG units to captured airfields, as they advanced! The RSBN is also essential for locating "targets". Without a range and bearing its like looking for a needle in a desert!:-) My coding skills are poor, but the concepts are fascinating. Thanks to community members, the sim becomes alive! Thanks for your work!:-) Regards David

A superb mod. Thank you for this. Only one thing so far (little testing). I think Nellis 220L is Ch 6 and Nellis 220R is Ch 5. Many thanks again. Agree re the mobile RSBN. If someone could make a mission object that had RSBN coordinates...? Best regards David
