  1. Hi, My only Internet server gaming experience is to here: http://www.hitechcreations.com/help.html See the GAME INFO drop-down, ARENAS sub-heading. How do the servers work here to DCS and Flaming Cliffs? Do guys have their own? That is what I think. Are the machines dedicated servers? OR Are they setup as a server off a part of your PC? COSTS? I would think getting access to T1 tiers would get expensive. Unless you guys are independently wealthy, how do you fund these things? I figure at least a club fee would be involved. I looked into building one primarily just to host my own machine shop web site, but the phone fees and the troublemakers out there doing illegal stuff trying to crack into them, I decided it was better just to access them and not own them. But it really sucks, when, for instance, Geo Cities decides to close. At least they gave plenty of warning to backup files and source code. Erich
  2. My only other MMORGP (I think that is the correct acronym...maybe...) online, lots of guys in a server is: http://www.hitechcreations.com/help.html Why I quit that flight sim game I have done since 2007, on 4 independent, company owned servers, is what I perceived as cheating. And I said so on the forum and separately to the owners. That "cheating" may very well be the inadequacy of my Frontiernet.net lousy DSL connection running only at less than 5 mega bytes per second download speed and frame rates. My PC is more than adequate, but something just does not gel there. You guys do the server thing here differently; maybe that is more common in the real world than being spoiled to Aces High. I quit that game paying $15 monthly for something new and more challenging because there is just too many moves that have to be memorized between the 2 sims. The older I get, I am almost age 60, the harder it gets. But I DO MISS Aces High, sometimes. Realize too, I did cerebral hemorrhage at age 50 and survived it---no small feat. I type mostly with one finger. Delphi and Yahoo Groups forums forced me to type, therefore forcing me to use the hand/eye/brain/muscle relearning process and saved my life. Some guys think I am a bit slow learning---yes I am. But at least I have use of both hands. Aftermath of brain hemorrhage is not fun and retraining the brain to create new pathways is the goal. I walk a lot, BUT not enough. I love the Internet, but not Facebook or Twitter. I love flight sims. Now to answering your question: ====================== Both! And then some. Depends on the squad. Aces High has over 500 guys, probably over 1000 guys in it worldwide. And they have many, many squads in it. See their COMMUNITY drop down. Each squad is different. Some squads operate very casually and some squads act just like a full military flight unit should function in real life. Some squads are very demanding, very aggressive, very similar to the way the Marines train killers or the SEALS operate after BUDS. I got LockOn Platinum in January 2011 is how I found DCS through KonKuSSion, I call him Kon. Once I ever get up to where I need to be as a useful squad member I will request a squad membership. I know where I will need to be before being useful. And from what I have seen so far the 77th Savage group may fill YOUR need and MY need. Ask him. http://www.s77th.com/forums/login.php?redirect=cal_lite.php&sid=55c1459e84c45d7771f5680459dabd71 Just jump in and try a squad and feel it out. I did that doing the USA Navy in 1974 at age 22, but I was committed, no way out for 6 years. LOL! As to lots of guys on one server? Aces High has approximately quarterly, 500 guys, in squads, at one time recreating a WWII battle that can last 3 hours, but the limiting factor is, WWII era planes, via machine guns, mostly toss bombs except for the precision bombers. And too many guys ramming and head-ons like an arcade game mentality, which I hate. The owners will not enforce not allowing it, so I left. Maybe LockOn is similar. I played LockOn FC about a week. I would love to see a Korean war sim: F-86 vs. Migs of that era as realistic as DCS is. I am a bit wordy.... yeah, right... and veer off topic too much... And might get scolded for it. Erich
  3. Hi, Your stuff is aces! Thanks for the effort. You have an engineer's mind. Erich
  4. The .pdf manuals under Eagle Dynamics in my Windows program stash are Adobe .pdf. Use the search box that Ctrl+F gives you and try to find the info that way between the two bigger manuals. I'm too new in this game to know the answer. And of course, search forum archives. I like to play with the Multiplayer servers online, the ones that allow me in. Read the briefing and take notes. Erich
  5. They used to do this exact same thing in "Aces High" to their independent training server. But real life gets in the way unless the instructor is retired with lots of time on his hands. Now introduce payment as to a guy's time worth and using maybe PayPal and this may be an opportunity for making a little cash on the side. LOL You may very well find some takers. I like the idea of how the military trains. And you complete phase 1 adequately before advancing to phase 2, etc. There was a game, similar to Top Gun, where I thought I would never complete the training levels before ever being allowed out to the game's fleet ops. And like the Navy does and some sim squads, you are ALWAYS being critiqued and scored. Some sim squads give you a 2 week trial period. You fail what they are looking for, you are not accepted in their squad. I know of two guys in here that do quite a lot to help the newbies. Erich
  6. In single engine propeller planes the torque of the engine will necessitate the need to counter the other way with some rudders and aileron, especially at takeoff with a two wheeler tail dragger. I do not know if it is the same with two turbofans spinning at high rpm, both spinning in the same direction. Once up off the runway, gear up and flaps up, 1st thing I do is get trimmed up before even considering the autopilot. And as in real life, it is always dynamic as to speed, altitude, weight, wind, change in center of balance as to the weapon and gas load. The problem I have is my CH Fighterstick is too high sitting on the desk, velcroed to it. Adjusting the trim buttons is not as easy in my setup as a real life simulator or the real jet would be. I would like it between my legs but the Pro Pedals rudders on the floor do not make it very practical to do, at least for me. Maybe somebody has figured out a good simpit setup. The FC game I experienced a pretty strong crosswind in one of the sorties. I crashed on takeoff several times before realizing it was crosswind related. And therefore compensated for it. Erich
  7. Hi, In GAME mode I can get wingman to do various things like get the radars and SAM sites, maybe he will live long enough, maybe not. I agree, he goes into battle areas too high. In full SIM mode, he doesn't listen to me until after I am dead or floating down in my chute, then he follows orders as to military ops. But I'm still a newbie, so maybe I am missing something. Does this game allow implementation of more than one wingman to tag along; like bringing along another flight element and taking orders? Erich
  8. Well, not to knock ED... Ever play the old Micrprose sims? It came with a labeled, keyboard cutout; a setup manual and a Operators Manual as to how-to doing the game and before CDs were invented or before CDs were marketed to anything with a comparable CD reader and ballpark $30 USA, a hundred years ago. LOL! Well, if you have the time to spend 48 hour days learning this game, reading the forums and reading the manuals, ED does a pretty good job. AND the community for the most part is friendly. Maybe that is because the meaner lot of guys prefer arcade sims. Erich
  9. Hi Kon, I do not know if I will, either, just thinking about it. Currently learning this game with your .map profile for CH Gear. I modified it just a wee bit using Control Manager. Just printed out your Start-up procedure list. (Also have WarrirorX's.) Thanks mucho grande for your great help with the LockOn/DCS stuff. Yeah, I flunked Spanish1, twice. LOL! At some time this Spring/Summer I will take a week and rebuild my new homebuilt PC and update it some just for this sim. But after playing around with this A-10C awhile. I almost bought a VelocityMicro machine. Richmond is about a 7 hour drive from here. I used to do my 2 weeks ACDUTRA every couple years to Camp LeJeune, Seabees playing with the Marines at Camp Geiger. Thanks. Erich
  10. You may be surprised what a USA public library "inter-library loan" can get you. You might need to pay a fee. Here in NY I have gotten books out of State. See the Reference Librarian. I usually feel a book out by a library 2 week loan read before shelling out cash for anything relatively expensive. Erich
  11. If left on, jammers over-heat. At least that is how it works in other sims I have played. I have not played the LockOn/DCS series much. I think it is similar to a Sears radial arm saw motor overheating and it cuts off until it cools off. I read in forums here that the laser pointer will also overheat if left on. I haven't got that far in the training tutes, yet. Erich
  12. Hi, Flying some of the older flight sims, like the "Stealth Fighter" or "Air Duel" in DOS for the IBM 386. My 1st thing I want out of the way is the radars and sam sites, AA guns, then the communications capability. Just like we did in Libya recently, but they do it everything at the same time to blind them. Sorry, I have no book references, except jet dogfight tactics by Shaw and the sim world fighter book "In Pursuit" of WWII aircraft by Kylander. This Warthog sim is a lot like the old Microprose helicopter sim, "Gunship"; the USA Apache, fighting in Russia from German bases. Maybe find its user manual on e-bay. I am new to Warthog, too. Erich
  13. I have the CH trio installed, using Control Manager and the Pro Throttle, USB. I used to run the Saitek AV8R-01 in another sim. I still have it. It has become a little sloppy as to the nature of Saitek controllers used a lot. Would it be possible to use the AV8R-01 USB as replacement throttle for A-10C instead of the CH Pro Throttle, but keep the CH Fighterstick and CH Pro Pedals also, simultaneously? The Saitek has two split throttles and a mess of clickable switches as well as its joystick. My gut feeling is not possible to run separate brands together. Would anybody out there know if this is realistic; or fantasy-land? I have Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit; i7-920 cpu Erich
  14. I can get out and taxi in full sim mode in 5 to 10 minutes, but I do not do the full tutorial setup. Why that works that way I do not know. I just get the minimum instruments that I need to get running and go. I use the multi-warnings light, right side console to guide me. The Nav warning and the ECS warning lights (whatever it is called) go out after takeoff. In flight, I have to click the far left switch in autopilot console to get automatic pilot to function, but the trim button on the joystick works pretty good all by itself. I do not do the proper sequence startup procedure. That is not to say I will not do the proper procedure when it is necessary. Primarily I just jump in and get it going and play with the game. As to doing it properly? I'm still doing the tutes and reading the manuals. LOL I like to hit the target F-key and watch the SAMs fire at me and try to learn how the AI stuff works. Best tactic I have found to save my hide, even with stores still on the wing, is dive for the deck at treetop level, full out dive, no brakes, full throttle. LOL! Fun game. I suppose I could rip a wing off doing that. (OFF TOPIC: Landings: I sometimes overshoot the runway in the grass on short airfields. I try to land just a hair above the stall warning horn as to airspeed and get on the concrete immediately. I have no issue getting it out of the grass to the taxiway. Saw that somewhere where some guys were stuck in the grass. I have lost tires, even entire wheel assemblies. Shut down the engines while out in the grass. I go do something else for 10 minutes or so. Come back and all wheels and tires are good to go. Startup and taxi out of the grass to rearm on the tarmac. ???? Why is that? Works for me.) I usually fly in full sim mode. And I am still a newbie. Online, it seems startup time depends how that particular server sortie is setup. In GAME mode the process is much simpler. Left Win+Home , I think gets it all going quickly. In Full Sim Mode, Alt+Home for left engine and Ctrl Home for right engine is not how it is done in the real jet. I bet they use a GM key with a computer security chip in it. Erich
  15. Yes I have, in the $60 purchased version, (.7 Patch #2) is still a lower HUD centered message. Does this - Note - refer to anything else? I searched for it in the .pdf 700 page flight manual with a Ctrl F search input box for Adobe. I did not find a reference to it. That does not mean it is not mentioned in the manual. I have not found what it means except this post---my 1st post result to a forum search in this forum topic. Erich Edited (April 23, 2011): ================ http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=71181&highlight=HUD+Note
  16. I learned the PC in my age 50's, now I'm almost 60. Anytime, I am learning something new as to PC, I am totally mentally immersed. I find myself waking up 4 hours later, sitting more or less upright in my office chair, never realizing I went to sleep... That happens a lot. Have not done that yet, driving my car, but I saw a guy on the Interstate drive off the road and out into a farmer's field. He went quite a ways in that Cadillac before stopping.
  17. Hi, I've been doing the training tutorials. There is a lot of stuff to memorize! How else to go into a battle area and make moves quickly and proficiently? So, how do you folks do the process? I'm just looking for ideas. I have been using various, separate school type spiral notebooks as to check lists and doing the tutes over and over and over to try to memorize, so as to rapidly do what is necessary as second nature. Other thing I like to do offline, is replay a sortie, zoom ahead rapidly just before I screw up, then hop into the plane at normal speed and maybe not make the same stupid mistake. And this has probably been asked before, so if necessary, delete this post, but maybe PM me with some links. Erich
  18. After me playing Aces High for 4 years, other than a full instrument landing in cloud down to the runway, what is the big deal landing this Warthog in full sim mode offline or online? I can do it. Some of the airfields are a wee bit shorter than others! And I am hardly proficient at doing anything with this plane other than, in full sim mode: cold ramp start, taxi to the runway, takeoff, fly the pattern and land it. I like cold starting it in the dark. I navigate using the F10 map. I'm really getting good at going into a SAM site and getting shot down! LOL But sometimes I can fake the sams out by getting down into the hills. This sim is a lot more fun than the game from Texas. Erich
  19. F-86 and the Korean war Mig whatever it was, would be great for dogfights. Just cannons. Erich
  20. Hi, I have only played one other online air combat MMORPG. Actually, Aces High out of Texas : http://www.hitechcreations.com/help.html and this DCS Warthog game in the Multiplayer rooms. I would like to see a dedicated server similar to Aces High's Orange arena where it would be all out war, by various squads against each other, in various aircraft and ground war units and hundreds of players. 12 years ago, the only reason I wanted Internet access was to keep in touch with various online machine shop groups as basically a texting/social network as a think tank. Then got interested in WWII online air war. Warthog is more challenging. I bought LockOn Platinum 2 or 3 months ago. I played around with FC for about a week. Then I found Kon through Google. He got me interested in this new A-10C. I do not even know how your current server system functions. But it looks like guys have their own servers or use a PC as a server and allow certain people in. It does not look like the DCS owners have a dedicated arena. I also do not know what the ultimate goal of DCS is. Aces High has over 80 WWII era aircraft. I do like this Warthog thing offline or online. I had to cancel out my Aces High account. Just this one jet is overloading my aging mind. Too much stuff to memorize. Later, at some future time, I would like to get the Russian helicopter next. But a couple good fighter jets, later on, would be fun to add to the collection. DCS must employ a small city, the amount of programming involved to make such a cool, intricately complicated aircraft. I would definitely pay a small monthly fee to get a dedicated battle arena server. Erich
  21. Hi all, Thanks for help. Basic path I took setting up the #2 patch was from Firefox download store-room, to Desktop, to MY DOCUMENTS---I have a folder designated for this 2nd patch 1.1.0.7 . From that folder I clicked on setup.exe . Setup process told me it was looking for "setup(5)-1.bin" without quotation marks and had to figure that out . What I had downloded off the url supplied above (top of thread, 1st post) gave me "setup-1(3).bin" . So, I renamed it to what the setup program was looking for and good to go. See basic algebra does come in handy---substitution! I verified I have version 1.1.0.7 thru Mission Editor\Credits . I still need to learn this game and making headway, FINALLY, with Kon's CH map controls setup in full sim mode. I fully intend to use Kon's .map . My TrackIR is still in the box unopened. Thanks to you'all for helping me out. It is a long hard road... Erich
  22. I built my own PC last year, all parts came from Newegg.com I'm more savvy with the hardware end than the software---how-to end of doing stuff. I have patch 1.1.0.6 version installed. This is verified by me going to Mission Editor\Misc\Credits. I downloaded in Mozilla Firefox both modules to my downloads store-house, from here: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/patches/dcs-wh_patch_1.1.0.7_en/ I downloaded wee hours NY time, Setup-1.bin and Setup.exe both from the Server HTTP 1 USA It took about an hour to download using DSL. How / what / where do I go from here to install the new patch into my current game? (I did the original install and the 1st patch myself but I do not remember how I did it. Yes, my older age is a negative factor plus medicines I take would put a horse to sleep!) Patch instructions say it matters as to: All 2 files should be downloaded and put into one folder before launching setup. Filenames are of importance. Thanks for any help, Erich
  23. No, you are wrong. I have not done as you suggest. I do not think I am typing in Greek but there is always BabelFish. Thank you for the help getting this far. I will figure it out. Doing the medical rounds I have not been on my PC in a week. Erich
  24. Hi Kon, I never changed anything of your original program files in CH Control Manager. I loaded it as instructed. I only made trim changes NOT in Control Manager, but only in Plug and Play. Something I did or did not do in its proper sequence, maybe adding the controls. Your method adding controls is not how Ghost's tutorial to SimHQ says to do it. I have not read the Adobe pages, yet. I am not saying your method is wrong---works for you and others. I am missing a step along the way. There are maybe 12 different variables that can be going on. Just a matter of isolating the problem and doing it correctly. My entry into the Internet was WebTV---10 or 12 years ago. What we all found out was different machines, different brands, basic same WebTV commands did not always work the same on all machines. I think this is true concerning the different kinds of computer setups, too. Thanks for your help and your time. Erich
  25. Hi Kon, I do not wish to change anything as to your setup and I have not, except the trim. In plug and play I mirrored your setup best I could except I did switch the trim ailerons and elevators to where you have Boat Switch and China Hat on the throttle. I'll try again. I will leave the trim buttons on the Fighterstick. The problem I had in plug and play was the same---no in cockpit throttle slider that works and no rudders or steerable nose wheel. I figured that out by finding a thread in the Forums. I removed the DCS Warthog folder under Saved Games and started over, mapping my CH trio in plug and play. I will try removing that folder again so I can maybe insert somehow your CH files. I think that is where the conflict is. DCS pre-programs the CH gear. I now have some CH tutorials as how-to, to work with. My plug and play setup folder I will save in a safe place. I just completed the Navigation Tutorial in TRAINING in plug and play and mostly keyboard commands. I need your CH setup to do the navigation thing, your setup would make it so much easier. I will be doing that tute over and over in my sleep to memorize the controller button functions. I will go online sometime with that TeamSpeak thing and talk to you if I get hungup. My hours will be weird this next couple of weeks. I'll find you. The other issue is how to map the Right Shift+Right Control keys with the numbers keypad to get views up, down, left, right in cockpit views using the TrackIR? Is it even possible? TrackIR is not installed, yet. I do have a Logitech G15 keyboard with 3 modes and 18 programmable keys also to play with. Years ago, early 1990's Microprose had a game very similar to this one with the 2 MFD screens. I think it was F-117A. It was in DOS and it mimicked the 1st Iraq war. I don't remember it being this hard to learn. How many other almost age 60 guys you have in here? That game mimicked just what they are doing currently in Libya---take out the communications capabilities and early warning radars 1st, but currently they are using cruise missles instead of stealth fighter/bombing jets. Thanks. Erich PS: Reading the tutorials above I will need to do some work on my old Dell Dimension 3000 I bought new in 2004 so I can read the tutes on the Dell while I play with this game on this new PC I built last summer. My Dell originally was just 256 MB ram. I soon added 2-500 MB sticks of ram. I can expand it to 2 GB. I have the ram, just have to take it apart. Hope that battery is still going and don't have to reload the BIOS in it. The Windows .Net was killing it slower than molasses. Maybe another GB of ram on my Pentium 4 machine will speed it up. It will be a few days doing this. I am not wasting good ink on all those instructions. Thanks for the effort with those tutorials to SimHQ and the .pdf tutorial.
