Interesting read - and quite scary. Has anyone threatened ED staff memebers yet...?

Discontinuing Weekly Updates - Please reconsider
upupandaway replied to Cobra847's topic in Chit-Chat
I would have to agree with Feuerfalke and Cobra. Has any reason been stated? ...because the discontinuation had already been considered at an earlier point and I think then it was because of rumours and flaming with regard to the updates. Weekly updates were one of the best things ED recently did PR wise and it saddens me to read this. It doesn´t have to be much, but I always enjoyed the opportunity to check the site on a friday night to read some bits of news about development. (Don´t understand what get´s people so upset about these infos...) And with regard to several other posts that were made before - I sincerely hope that this forum will never turn into a typical gaming forum. -

Yes, you have made that clear. I didn´t download any of your files and used them. I hope that has become clear as well now. -
DCS World Sound Mod

a) Technically you could pull that rethoric but I personally think it is a little unnecessary in this small corner of the world. I´m happy if somebody likes my work and also if they (partly) want to include it into their own mod to improve DCS even further. b) You are right - out of the 150-200 effects or so which I included in my mod there are no more than a handful that I took directly, all the rest is made from scratch by myself. c) It should be comaptible with other mods - you simply replace the old files by copy/paste and you are free to choose only a fraction or whatever you like. -
DCS World Sound Mod
upupandaway replied to upupandaway's topic in Utility/Program Mods for DCS World
Well, at this point I really don´t feel any urge to get back to editing new sound effects. :) This was mostly a project that started and went on parallel to my masters exam, something I did in between work sessions. I´m just sharing here what I put together primarily to enhance my own experience of DCS. Over the years I have seen many projects for DCS like this and usually you would very quickly notice which sounds had been taken over from other compilations etc., i. e. it´s common practice. This doesn´t really answer the point about permission, but I searched all mods I still have on my HD and the download section for this particular mod. When I couldn´t identify it, I assessed if I should include them or leave them out - I left them in for the sake of completeness, to mirror the way I run the game audio-wise. After all we´re talking obscure mods for an even more obscure video game here... You may judge this as the wrong way to go about things, and I admit that formally it is a little problematic, but until now you are really the only one who feels the need to bring this up. Cheers. -
DCS World Sound Mod

Yeah, you´re right, and I should have worded that differently... But as I explained via PM, the only files that I included directly are some old Ka-50 sounds that I still had on my hard drive from a previous install and which I couldn´t identify. The overall goal of this mod is to create new effects. Basically, during the creation of this mod a very small number of samples may have been mixed together with my own to create nuances or echos, but at a level where they are no longer individually distinguishable. Too many files and versions of each effect to know for sure. That´s why I added the statement (plus the Ka-50 thing). The process was not to search other people´s existing work and simply take what I like to put together in another mod. Feel free to check it out. -
DCS World Sound Mod

UPDATE Version 3: With the release of 1.2.5 I went back and revisited large parts of the mod to improve some of the old effects and add several more to the compilation. I consider the current version of this private mod pretty much final at this point, but if further changes are implemented by ED or if I find some more good material, I might revisit and expand it more at some future point. Next I will try to find the time to make an updated demo video for the mod. A brief overview of the changes in V3: - redid the aircraft engine effects (tweaked the ED stock files a little) - redid/refined some of the explosion effects - redid/refined several weapon and missile effects - tweaked some of the stock UH-1H effects - added new eninge sounds for tanks - adjusted volume of some effects With the addition of new effects the mod now exceeds the 100MB upload limit in the user´s files section, so it had to be spilt into two parts. Download link part 1 of 2: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/436723/ Download link part 2 of 2: http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/436724/ PLEASE TRY OUT THIS MOD AND FEEL FREE TO LEAVE SOME FEEDBACK! Enjoy! -
I was surprised reading of this particular decision in the update. Great, great, great. This very much honors the trust many people have put in ED. Bring it on!

No offense, but you really can´t draw that conclusion based on the data available. I feel compelled to highlight this, since the installation of the mod hasn´t affected DCS in such a way on both my computers where I use/test it with version 1.2.4 nor has anyone else reported this. All you do is copy the files into the folder. DCS is a little enigmatic at times... Anyway, have fun with the Black Shark!
-
Yep, that´s what it is for the most part...
-
Hello gaspard, both versions of the mod were created under 1.2.4 and should work just fine with it. In MP I have noticed several times (as have other people I played with) that sometimes the game arbitrarily doesn´t replay certain sounds. I never observed this in SP, but besides that the mod doesn´t touch any of the Huey´s files. It doesn´t modify any of the sdef-files either - it just replaces the audio files for now. I would be surprised if the modified sound files cause such problems... The problem during takeoff really sounds like you forgot to press "Pg up"... No need to reinstall ;)

That´s probably the just first step towards the independent DCS Su-27 module with avionics coming at a later point. The Su-27SM was mentioned at least in the overview video from january.
-
Awwww! You mean people.

Born lucky I guess. Funny, how several posts are strewn out between all the back-and-forth that seem like desperate attempts to get this back on-topic. ^^ Anyway, are there already definite versions/sketches for the F-35´s camouflage for all the countries involved (Israel/Japan?)?
-
Not to mess with your other points, but even after 1.2.4 it has been mentioned more than once that there is still work ongoing on fixing remaining MP-bugs. I´m sorry to say, but I haven´t had that much of a bug free and convincing experience playing DCS online during the last 12 months, but I really don´t want to get into that right here. Right now I´m waiting for 1.2.5 to see if it works there because currently I don´t really have the time to play seriously anyway.

I think a company should be judged based on the quality of their products... easy one in this case. The persisting problems in online play are indeed quite annoying, but that is totally OT.
-
Good point indeed! ;) What wishlist? Did I miss anything?

Well, reading that they are doing the F-35 ist great news. I´m very curious to find out how complex it is going to be but I think I read in their product presentation that they are striving to achieve A-10C level of fidelity. In the end it doesn´t matter to me what number between 70 and 95 (%) would have to be used to represent that level - it will most likely be a very interesting module. Cheers to that, KI! ...and what a thread! Very amusing to read, but I really can´t understand why people get so upset about this announcement to begin with (sadly, I missed the posts in question) and where the whole idea about ED being scammers came from. I followed a lot of the news releases and threads regarding the issues at the time - lastly, these accusations seem unfounded to me. We should be happy that firstly there is, in absolute numbers, more information about DCS to be shared that secondly more information is being shared about the projects from ED than before. Complaining about lack of fidelity in the A-10C would also have to be justified by learning all of it´s functions - which is a thing most people around here (including me) probably can´t claim for themselves. It´s a great sim, man - one of the kind that was said te be dead - so why the sad/angry face?! It´s just a game.

Hey, three displays in the A-10C is cheating. Nice work!
