AGM-45 Shrike Quick Guide by Klarsnow - updated June 5th 2024
primus_TR replied to HB_Painter's topic in DCS: F-4E Phantom
The pull up cues are completely dependent on where your align the horizontal and vertical bar at the moment you press and hold the pickle button. It is basically using trigonometry to calculate distance to target (as shown in HSI range indicator) based on elevation and the onboard INS system for angle to target, so it's not very reliable. -
He sure has some areas of improvement but overall Jester is fine in my opinion.
-
100% my sentiment. The best module ever.

Here is the section of the F4 manual on how to enter coordinates from the Jester wheel: https://f4.manuals.heatblur.se/jester/navigation.html?highlight=coord#enter-coordinates You can enter coordinates when editing Primary or Secondary Flight Plan, or setting a divert if I recall correctly. Oops. I misunderstood your question. It looks like using the keyboard is the only way to enter coordinates at this time with Jester 2.0. -
I've seen this happen with AAAs in several occasions.
-
It might be a controller issue. When you pause TrackIR, other controllers designated to control view take over. May be a worn out pot.

You can do that already -
Yes, the pointer turns to hand when hovering over an invisible icon.
-
nullWhen I start DCS, this is the launcher screen I get: When I click on the orange icon, DCS starts.

Having examined your attack, I noticed that the Fan Song tracking radar was sitting next to the Flat Face search radar, so when you took out the Flat Face, the Fan Song was also destroyed from the blast. In other words, the SA2 installation was not blinded because you knocked out the search radar; if Fan Song would be located a little farther from the search radar, it would not be destroyed, and executing a follow on AGM45D attack would be impossible; Fan Song would have happily destroyed you. So, you cheated a bit there Unfortunately, the problem with attacking SA2 sites with AGM45s is that it is almost impossible to destroy the Fan Song, unless you have a team mate who keeps Fan Song active and busy, while you take it out with a Shrike. If attacking solo, MK20s remains the weapon of choice, at least to me, for taking out a Fan Song. Hence my original comment above. -

@Hobel Thank you for taking the time to create this track and video. Very helpful. I'll try to learn from it. -

Could you demonstrate, when you have time, how to use the Shrike correctly against a SA2 (fan song) installation? A track would be most helpful. -

Unfortunately, it is much safer and more effective at this time to use a low altitude (>500ft), high speed strike with mk20s than to use shrikes to attack sam sites. Even when defended by AAA, a fast (<500 kts tas) run in with a salvo of 12 mk20s assures great results with barely a scratch on the phantom. I prefer popping up to 2000 ft agl about 7 miles out and using DT for delivery, as laydown requires a very precise profile, which is not very easy to attain in this setting. The key is remaining very low until pop up at about 5 miles out so as not to alert the defenders to your presence until the last moment. -
Take your time.

RWR unable to detect tracking/launch by aerial platforms
primus_TR replied to primus_TR's topic in Bugs & Problems
Thank you for the reply. Since the last patch, now the RWR repeats the new guy tone (three beeps) at a different frequency when the radar switches modes, which serves as a tracking/launch warning. Just must be careful as it is very easy to miss it -
I love the mid coldwar analog gear much better. Mfds etc., we have the 16 and the 18 if you want those
-
Also note that, if you have shrikes with different seeker heads loaded, and you have pylons with shrikes with different seeker heads active concurrently, you will not have the tone. It is understandable as the system cannot tell which seeker you wish to use. I'm not sure if that is the case with your problem, but just something to note.

Yes I understand that you used the WRCS AGM-45 mode. I was referring to the selection of Loft/Direct logic when choosing the seeker head for the Shrike missile in the mission editor/mission loadout screen. Because it seemed to me that the missile was active (fins flapping) above 18000 ft altitude. -

Nice. I noticed that you used direct attack logic (seeker head), not loft. Am I correct? -

This is from the first post in this thread. It's a very useful guide and it'll answer all shrike-related questions if you take the time to read it -
Fingers crossed
