Hi all, just wondering if anyone can share their experience of VR with a set up like mine, with i7-9700K and GTX1080 (see sig for full specs). Particularly interested to hear from Oculus Rift S users. Thanks in advance

Spool down sound added!

Like the engine de-throttle "whine" sound that's been added, even though not on the changelog. I saw from a Razbam update the other week they were adding it, WIP at the mo. I noticed it only seems noticable inside cockpit, with canopy shut. I also notice shutting down engine seems to happen a lot quicker going from idle to off. All part of the WIP I wonder? Having watched Harrier displays in the UK for years, the best part was the "whine" after touchdown and I'd love to recreate that in DCS!!

Windows 10 licence for new build
Ratfink replied to Ratfink's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
My Win 8 was OEM, supplied with computer when I bought it. As I never bothered with free upgrade offer, it was still ok to use for Win 10 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -

Windows 10 licence for new build
Ratfink replied to Ratfink's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hi folks, just to say I was able to use my Win 8.1 product key with a fresh Win 10 install, using the media creator to make an install flash USB drive and entering in the key when asked. All good here. -
Thanks Bearskin, your advice really helped, especially RAM and board choice. Went with the Aorus Pro to save a few quid. I hope I don't miss those H/T cores :)

Who designed the F-16 mission "Island Style?"
Ratfink replied to CheckGear's topic in Missions and Campaigns
I like this mission, very nice indeed. Only trouble for me, attacking the launchers CCIP they don't appear visible until right on top of them. -
Correct, staging the upgrade process. The 1080 still very capable, and with my G-sync 100Hz monitor I don't need more than 100fps right now. Hoping to go VR in the future, pretty sure I'll need something better then. The H60 seems to be doing a good job on the 9700K, 27degC idle, 37degC DCS from what I can see.

Been a long day building this bloody thing, but all up and running with said components above and quite happy with the results. DCS runs a lot smoother, not fully tested yet but the F-16C SP mission "island life" or whatever it's called on the ramp at start gone from 24 ish fps to 50 ish fps. Need to play around a lot with driver settings and can't quite seem to get monitor g-sync to work properly but so far, so good.

So today DCS ran an update on DCSWorld Open Beta that moved my BS2, A10C, FC3 modules to the new ED DRM management. Tomorrow I plan to build my new rig with new OS SSD, MB, CPU and RAM. DCS is installed on a separate SDD that I hope will be picked up by running the DCS.EXE and logging in to my account in module manager, as read in other posts. I was going to deactivate the above mentioned modules so I can make the migration smooth and not lose an activation on the starforce products, but now the new update has taken hold for open beta and the "DRM" button is gone! I have DCS World stable realease too, and deactivated in that OK. Just to be sure. Hoping I won't have lost an activation. Will see tomorrow

Orders placed! Building this weekend. Seeing as another storm is hitting UK this weekend, best to be indoors then :)
-
Thanks Bearskin for the advice. Will order the bits over the next couple of weeks or so based on finding time to build it. Will keep you posted!

Thanks to all that have offered their advice, I'm truly grateful. I've decided I will go with:- Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Pro Wifi Intel i7-9700K Corsair LPX Vengeance DDR4 32GB 3200Mhz I will replace the Intel 520 OS drive with a 850 EVO I already have, and install Win 10 on that. R4 Case, H60 cooler, GTX1080, etc I plan to reuse and upgrade at a later date.

Windows 10 licence for new build
Ratfink replied to Ratfink's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Rudel, that's awesome! Thanks for that - not a problem for me to use Win 10 Home, I don't need any of the Pro features on this machine. I assume that the process is to download the media creation tool here https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 and enter my Win 8 key off the CD cover, and it will only unlock Home level features and activate? I understand the Win 10 from that site is a single universal installer for all versions and 32/64 bit, the key determines Home or Pro -
Windows 10 licence for new build
Ratfink replied to Ratfink's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Thanks for advice guys! Can't help thinking there's a catch with those ebay licences - are the really genuine? -
Hi folks, I'm looking to replace the main OS SSD, CPU, mobo, RAM on my current rig which is running Win 8.1 (OEM as I bought original from PC Specialist) on an old Intel 520 SSD. I already have a spare Samsung 850 EVO 250GB that used to be my DCS drive, which I recently replaced with a 1TB 860. I want that as my new main OS drive running Windows 10. For the new build, does anyone know if I can clean install Windows 10 (using USB download) to the 850 EVO using the Win 8 key I have? Or do I need to purchase a new Win 10 key? If so, where do you recommend as Amazon offerings look rather dodgy - £6 for Win 10 Pro? Too good to be true?

Thanks Bearskin, I'm pretty happy with the performance overall. My 34" Gsync is max 100Hz and I play PUBG a lot when not flying with max settings and it tops out at 100fps most of the time. DCS performance isn't bad, 30-40 fps on the ground, 40-60 over Gulf, much better over Nevada and Caucasus. That's SP missions. I don't have time for MP. I'm looking to upgrade as step 1 toward VR, with step 2 coming later. Plus I still have Win 8.1 with classic shell, which is fine but think latest VR needs Win 10. At least Oculus does, not sure about the others.

Thanks Bearskin, saw that already. I love this guy! Totally get the threads thing if I could get a good deal on 8700K I would. I guess there's ebay, and I would have to pray I get a decent one. I'm not sure that in 5 years or so, 8 real cores vs 6 real + 6 virtual will make much difference to me. I could always consider getting the 9900K then maybe, off ebay.
-
Apparently the H60 will work with any LGA1151 chip, so I read on various other forums. The holes on the rear bracket move so they say, confident will work with new Z390 board. Drawing more to the Aorus Pro as it fits my budget, but will see in a few weeks I guess. The H60 is as old as my system (7 years) but still works for now as best as I can tell (max 49 deg in DCS single player). As for <200 for the KF - that's absurd it's not gone so high.
-
BTW, would my H60 cooler do with a 9700K to start with, running stock? I won't be OC'ing straight away, no need considering where I'm starting from. Maybe in a couple of years, then upgrade it. Could save me 60 odd quid

Thanks for the tip, but seems not.
