From 3080ti to 4090, help with new settings.
SharpeXB replied to Arnaud's topic in Game Performance Bugs
I’m using a similar system and my TrackIR experience is quite smooth. I’ve seen some people feel that syncing their monitor to TrackIRs 60 or 120 HZ makes things smoother but I can’t detect that myself. I also see you’ve tried 60Hz already. Plus it doesn’t seem to be a good use of your systems potential. Some things you could try if you haven’t already, Set DCS to Full Screen. Try Low Latency Mode On or Ultra (Ultra might have made my DCS crash). Set Windows Power Mode to High Performance -

Yes when using G-Sync it’s best to turn off Vsync and set a cap in NCP at your monitor rate or maybe 2-3 frames below if you see any tearing. Set the DCS frame limiter to max ie Off. -

I think all the modules have key commands for the rudder (like Z and X for the Hornet). Keep in mind most all the modern aircraft have a Fly By Wire auto-rudder which alleviates the need to control this in normal flight. The only time you’ll use it is taxi and maybe landing in a crosswind. The warbirds all have a rudder assist for anyone without that controller. I think some form of rudder assist setting might be in the works for helicopters although I don’t know how that would work since it’s a primary control unlike in fixed wing aircraft. -
The trouble with that is screen tearing which I think competitive games just ignore in the quest for low latency. I’m not good enough that latency matters I understand the conventional wisdom with G-Sync is to turn off Vsync and avoid the latency, then cap your rate at or just below the screen refresh rate. If I cap right at 120 I get a little tearing hence the 117 setting. I set Low Latency in NCP to On, setting that to Ultra I think made DCS crash.

Yeah right at the moment the potential improvement wouldn’t be much. The only point of upgrading is to be ready for the future, and that’s only a so-so reason. DCS does take on a nice shine at 120Hz but getting that at the cost of quality, like enabling DLSS isn’t worth it IMO. Multi Frame Generation from a 5090 just seems like overkill. And any loss of quality doesn’t seem worthwhile at all.

You gotta reach for a pretty odd example there. Good thing there wasn’t a Betty voice in the LEM that yelled PULL UP! PULL UP! -

Right. That’s the natural orientation for a flight stick hence a good reason to use one. That’s what happens when you mess with someone’s instinctive reactions. There’s not a right or wrong answer for that one unless you wear a sword. You mean planet earth? Yes… The problem is, why would you? Maybe I’ll try driving on alternate sides of the road every day to broaden my horizons And that’s logical for such a control because it reflects exactly what the user is looking at. Just like a normal controller is oriented to the screen. Literally every controller in your daily life is oriented the logical way. Except in old video games… -
I’m actually GPU limited with the 4090 so I can only assume I would see a boost in this game. Not much though I expect, all the tests seem to indicate just 25%. Not great. Plus over the lifetime of using that card things can change. Like I said I’m not entirely sold on the idea. I do also play other games where staying current with the graphics card is probably a help.

I’ll still submit that the Forward=Up orientation is the natural response. Obviously because if you just look at the controller and the screen they match one another. And that’s universally how every device with a screen and a joystick or d-pad or thumb stick works. Any controller for your TV remote, your car, computer, mouse, games, software etc. It’s universal*. And in many cases not adjustable because hardly anyone would do that. I get the part about being conditioned by old video games but in all likelihood those are the only players who invert this. The games listed there in that article are all nearly 30 old too. Yes training can accomplish anything but the trouble is you’d be conditioning a reflex that will end up being backward on so many other devices you can’t change. It’s too frustrating and for no reason. That’s why I bought my first joystick *I have a friend who’s an engineer with the space program, I’ll bet he knows the answer to the Apollo controller. -
Well that’s just my experience here in the US. I can’t imagine that’s any different for other people here. Obviously I can’t speak for the whole world. I’m not totally sold on it yet but we’ll see. My usual thing is to just upgrade the GPU every cycle and sell my old card while it can still get a good price. Thus cushioning the bleeding edge blow. Bottom line a 5090 is still an improvement albeit a small one. And it will still be a boost in DCS. It’s either that or wait two more years… So how could Nvidia be engaged in price fixing without a monopoly? If their prices were artificially high you’d see AMD undercut them. Yet that competitor charges the same. “Demand will still be high because it's relative to supply, which everyone already knows Nvidia is manipulating to control the market.” PS that statement implies Nvidia has a monopoly otherwise how else would they “control the market”?
-
Well it has every time for me or the demand dies down and they’re available everywhere. No reason to expect that will be different this time. I’ll let you know. Nvidia doesn’t have a monopoly here although they do make a good product. Again both the RTX 4080 and equivalent AMD 7900 XTX sell at the same $999. If Nvidia is price fixing why is the AMD competitor just as expensive? And the RTX 4060 at $299 is actually less expensive than its AMD rival the RX 6700 XT at $479. Sure the price of the behemoth 5090 is eye watering but that’s not what the most common buyers are using. Those are like the top 1%ers.
-
Every time for me it has or the hype dies down and the card is readily available anywhere. I’ve never been completely unable to buy one at MSRP. For example, the wait for my 2080 Ti was about two months but I eventually got it from EVGAs queue. The 4090 I was able to buy instantly since that was maybe a year after launch. That’s been true for me over the last 12 years so I don’t see why that would change now. Hey if the card sucks then demand won’t be so high and they’ll be easier to find

Maybe it is just a me thing, but the majority of flight sim players probably don’t use a mouse and keyboard. Perhaps that’s part of the reason why. Sure, there’s nothing wrong about using any particular controller. It’s just a personal choice. Back to the topic… the problem you’d encounter like the OP states is that all these games or even modules here will handle keyboard inputs differently as that controller doesn’t represent a real life counterpart to emulate. It’s not just a matter of adapting or practice, it’s adapting to each game or module differently. In the long run you’re probably better off just using a flight stick and then that problem goes away. -
I’ve purchased many of my graphics cards from such wait lists over the last 12 years. Never had any vendor back out of one. They eventually come through or I’ll end up finding the same price on Amazon that their direct e store charges. I’ve never paid over MSRP for any of them. Indeed I don’t personally see a need for using DLSS or Frame Generation (if it was supported) in DCS, just for a bump from 90FPS to 120, the loss in quality isn’t worthwhile to me. Now in FS2024 FG works really well plus it’s necessary as without it I’m CPU-limited in the 40s and with FG I get in the 80-90s. And I can’t discern any loss of quality there. FS2020 did not do as well. FG introduced this flickering on some textures and cockpit displays. Why FS24 is better? Is it the game or just a better version of DLSS but it looks great. Cyberpunk 2077 again needs DLSS plus FG to get nice settings out of it but it also looks really good, again I can’t see any quality difference when enabling this.

Oh sure, with enough effort humans can train themselves to do anything. But why put that much effort in for a video game? There’s no point, you could just buy a simple joystick. Something like 20-25% of players invert the Y axis so it’s not just me bottom line if you’re a non-inverted player using a mouse or keyboard to fly with is going to be very difficult. It’s not just the flying, it’s when you fly to “aim” the plane when shooting. You’re fighting a lifetime of computer use reflexes. Note the default setting is not “inverted” meaning the majority of players probably don’t alter it. The topic is of course rather widespread in gaming so it’s not just me. https://gamecola.net/2020/10/first-person-view-can-you-tell-which-way-is-up/#:~:text=I classify non-inverted controllers,it's because there are people -

Not the pedals, the Y-axis. What’s amazing is some people use a gamepad to fly the Apache. Do they use it for the TEDAC too? Flying with one orientation and then doing a “shooter” in the other? Sure there are no limits to what human skill can accomplish but I really see no point in making a video game so difficult. -
Same here. I’ve always just gone on the notify list and got it when the hype cools off. Maybe with VR that’s more often the case. For me on a 4K screen I’m GPU limited. My theoretical CPU limit is about 152 FPS. By comparison in FS2024 I’m CPU bound in the 40s but using FG to boost that into the 80-90s and it honestly looks really nice.

DCS is an older game. It’s far from the most demanding title out there. It’s not MSFS that’s for sure. Until I replaced my 7-10 year old PC two years ago it was the only game I could still run decently. The performance trouble with DCS comes from trying to run it in VR at the higher setting which are intended for 2D

Do you have your mouse reversed for normal computer work? one things for sure, this has gotta be a very hard thing to unlearn once you’re set on it https://www.theguardian.com/games/2020/feb/28/why-do-video-game-players-invert-the-controls#:~:text=If the answer is “up,But why the perceptual difference? -
Dcs should become more keyboard and mouse friendly
SharpeXB replied to mrbluegame's topic in DCS Core Wish List
That’s just innately reflexive. Up is away from you, down is back towards you, like a pencil on paper. I can’t fathom there’s anyone who has their mouse cursor inverted like that so moving your mouse away from you would be down on the screen. That’s just insane Your normal computer use with a mouse would be backwards to the game. Such reflexes are involuntary so that would make the game just impossible to play. I can’t believe how games could be like that. There was an accident here at a local airport where the pilot of a dual engine plane had an engine failure on takeoff and pushed the wrong rudder pedal. I don’t know if that was the real cause but if someone was a cyclist such reflexes would be very hard to unlearn. Suit yourself, the request makes sense. It’s just that there aren’t many players who use that I’m sure. So you may just end up frustrated. It would be better to just get a joystick. I never learned to type properly since typing was for girls back in my day. It was the worst choice I ever made. I don’t use a keyboard for any type of gaming because I’d be constantly looking down at the keys -

SharpeXB replied to mrbluegame's topic in DCS Core Wish List
Possibly but so many people already own gamepads I can’t imagine that many do. The other problem you face with both of those is the inverted Y-axis. If there is any little part of your brain that knows pulling back on the stick makes an airplane go up you’re screwed. It’s just innate with keys or gamepads that forward is up on the screen and back towards you is down. But an aircraft’s controls are reversed. I find this simply impossibility unlearn. It’s literally reflexive. So any dumb FPS game that makes me try to fly a plane with the WADS keys I just have to skip that part. A joystick simply eliminates that problem. -

Yeah but trying to fly with key presses is Why torture yourself like that? The only reason I figure DCS has those inputs is that since it’s a free trial game someone can screw around with it and not need a joystick.
