Or wife.

Nice shiny new graphics card. Then latter down the track look to upgrade the CPU/motherboard/RAM combo.

http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=27488 I think I will hold off till early next year to see what the new generation of SSD's bring to the table apart from hopefully better price per GB. I admit it is tempting to enter the SSD game but do I have the will power to hold off into the first quarter of 2011? Or should I jump in before the VAT rise comes into effect after Christmas? :hmm:

Well said. My first computer purchase was a Pentium 133 Acer machine that cost be almost $5000 Aussie dollars back in late 1993 I think.

If you can build your own then it will cost you a lot less than one of those fancy Dells and it will also be more rewarding as it is your own creation.

Succellus, On the juice concern that you have check out my sig detailing my current system. All that is with a Seasonic 600w PSU. I would doubt that you will need to upgrade to a 750-850w unit unless you want to run dual graphics cards or top of line cards such as gtx480. Google search power supply calculators and you can determine what you need. EDIT: Here is a really good PSU calculator from Antec where you can choose pretty much every system component you have. It takes only 5 minutes to complete then hit the calculate button and you will have a pretty good idea of what you need and factor in a little wattage headroom. http://www.antec.outervision.com/

No insane route for me. Just the stock 120mm at the front sucking in and the 140mm in the middle. Besides I have a rear case 120mm fan which is behind the cooler anyway. The Noctua NH-D40 is a breeze to install despite it's massive size and it really does secure it tight to the CPU socket. Much better mounting system than my old socket 775 Tuniq Tower 120 HSF although that wasn't bad. One thing that the Noctua has over the Corsair H50 is that the center 140mm fan is mounted quite low and helps in bringing air over motherboard components around the socket area which I'm sure the motherboard appreciates.

Memory with tall heatsinks. :( In this day with DDR3 running at 1.65v and even less you really have to question the need for big tall heatsinks on anything but the fastest sticks. Noctua do have a memory compatibility page for the NH-D14. In fact MTFDarkEagle has posted a link to it in a few posts earlier than this. Also as an owner of a Noctua NH-D14 it didn't interfere with my Corsair sticks but they don't have the tall heatsinks on them. Another option is that you can raise the outer 120mm fan higher so that it doens't interfere with your RAM sticks.

A lock at 70c on the CPU suggests that it may not be the CPU but a part of the subsystem such as the motherboard was the cause. i7's are fine running at 70c although not ideal. It may be that either the CPU or motherboard may not be getting enough voltage. In short the CPU is a major component in overclocking but it's not the only thing.

Fully agree. On the micro stutters a couple here have said that by using an SSD they have got rid of micro stutters.
-
Yep to the above and the other thing to consider is weighing up the OC with additional power consumption. Normally 3.6 to 3.8Ghz overclock is the sweetspot for power consumption. Certainly over 4Ghz means high power consumption.
-
That's fair comment Bumfire and I agree with what you say. At the end of the day every CPU is different and mileage will always vary.

Yeah. I've just built a new system based around the x58 and i7-950. Still using my GTX260 but looking to upgrade prior to the VAT rise in the new year. It's definately a buyers market right now with plenty of great cards to choose from and at decent prises. And AMD should have it's response to the new Nvidia 580 card later this year. Happy days. :)

Won't be spending that much on a graphics card but it is good news as we saw with the major price cuts to the GTX460 series.
-
Yep that graphics card sounds terrible. Not to mention it's a Dell. I would really recommend building your own machine where it isn't loaded up with a whole lot of bloatware software and other Dell rubbish. Also there are computer companies which sell gaming rigs when you can customize many of the components if not all.

Sounds the opposite to reviews such as this: http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/cpu_mainboard/intel_core_i7-950_review/7 For the record I just recently built an i7-950 rig but haven't bothered to overclock it yet. I would have bought an i7-930 however the 950 had a massive price drop and I paid just £5 more for the 950 so it was a easy decision. I run it at stock 3.06Ghz at 1.05v. Just one measly volt to run this chip at over 3Ghz. I will be shocked if I can't take this to 4Ghz and above.

GTX 470 hmmm not so much improvement in FC2

Are you talking about for FC2? Or is this for the next title DCS A10C? -
GTX 470 hmmm not so much improvement in FC2
Konovalov replied to Saeid's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Well it's all been said by the guys above. CPU clockspeed is the most important thing. I'm looking to replace my E6600 currently overclocked to 3.2ghz with probably an i5-750 and overclock it to near 4ghz. Also I don't think there is any benefit of more than 2 cores in FC2 -
Would like some input on ram .
Konovalov replied to XLR8's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I'd go with one of the CAS 8 sets. Are you swapping your memory because of future overclocking? Otherwise I wouldn't think that you would see any visible performance boost in games/sims. -
It was enjoyable although my personal opinion is that cutting out some of the music tracks and just perhaps leaving the in-game sounds for some of the video would have been nice. Also some close up of the Su would have been good as it is such as great looking 3d model. Good work.

Hope all goes smoothly and that he is out of hospital quickly and back home recovering. No harm in watching Producer notes 1 and 2 again. Plus FC2 DVD should arrive soon so that should keep me occupied.

Will a printed manual be made available?
Konovalov replied to Squid_DK's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I would definately prefer a colour manual having purchased in the past prior manuals in B & W. And I would be willing to pay extra for it. -
Steel Beasts Pro would be the way to go.
