Can I make this system better?
Konovalov replied to Brutal's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
And I can't see in his posts what his monitor setup is but with a GTX260 I would imagine it wouldn't be anything major above say a single 22" to 24" screen. So that would be another wad of cash on multiple monitors. Who has the cheque book? ;) -
Monitor upgrade from 22inch TN TFT to 24inch IPS
Konovalov replied to Konovalov's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Well I went with the Asus ProArt PA246Q for £401 including shipping. Couldn't justify spending £500 plus as I want a 120GB SSD soon also. Hopefully this monitor will be great for both the DCS series and FC2 along with my photography. :) -

Good point EtherealN. Nice avatar by the way. I assume that this being an Alienware system the PSU would probably not be able to cope with this power sucking GBP. Is there a real benefit with this card in the DCS series? Seems like a waste of money. -

It will fit on your motherboard. The important questions are will it fit in your case (305mm long) and do you have an adequate PSU? It isn't exactly a small graphics card to say the least. But do you really need a dual GPU card with 4GB of VRAM? -

The oldest component there is the Nvidia 260 card so I would look at that first and foremost. I did see a headline on one of the tech sites linking to some article on stuttering in games and the causes of it. Can't find it now. :( -
I know, never thought otherwise.

No lack of sense of speed there. Very nice. High risk flying.

Due to real life constraints I haven't been around here for a while nor have I been able to invest any time in the DCS series or FC2. Yep, that's what happens when you become a dad for the first time. :) Now that things are settling down at home with the little one I need to get back into flying. So here I am sitting in front of my Samsung SM226 22inch (1680 x 1050 res) widescreen TFT TN panel monitor and things look just a little dull. The time has come for more screen real estate, better colours, better image quality, and better monitor ergonomics in terms of adjustments to height and possibly the pivot option for portrait photos. Right now a couple of monitors catch my eye. They are the Asus PA246Q 24.1" Professional ProArt Widescreen P-IPS LCD Monitor which I can find for £400 here in the UK. Second option again in the 24 inch 16:10 aspect ratio (1920x1200 resolution) is the Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24" Widescreen LED to be released here in the next few days and is priced at £300. Has anyone had any experience with the Asus PA246Q? Are there other candidates in the 24" 16:10 IPS screen? Will I see a significant improvement in the whole experience and the sense of immersion from my existing screen to one of the two 24" screens mentioned above in titles DCS BS, A-10C, and FC? P.S. I'd really love to move 2 steps up to the Dell U2711 27inch beast that I have spotted with only a 1 year warranty priced at £500 but I fear that this would require me to replace my GTX460 Super OC card as my guess is that it wouldn't cope too well with the 2560x1440 resolution of the Dell.

Most cost effective rudders

I have the Saitek Pro pedals and they are pretty sturdy and IMO good value for money. :) -
Clinical Wags. Cluster bombs look real nasty (in a good way).

What is this manuever called??
Konovalov replied to Shaderhacker's topic in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1 & 2
Gently is the word. To encourage the gently component I would recommend loosening the grip on the flight stick or try holding the stick with the fingers, thumb and base of the palm (where fingers join hand). This is much in the same way you would grip a golf club with your bottom hand. That way you should be able to excert more precise and subtle control of the flight stick. Does this make any sense. -
I'm waiting not so much for faster SSD's but rather cheaper ones. Right now a OCZ Vertex 2E 120GB drive is going for around 170 pounds here in the UK. I'd feel much better paying a pound per GB or near that.

Thanks for that. :)

Nice video Demokrator. That Grippen is a really nice model. Can you tell me the name of the artist and track that you have used in this video?
-
Final. Very unlikely that any more work will be put into FC2. Enjoy it for what it is and it runs very well on Win 7.

Do you have a budget? If not then the Dell U3011 can provide 30" of widescreen goodness. Or you can go for the older model that the above replaced, the U3008 which should save you a little bit. I would seriously put some research time into this as the monitor is the one component that you are probably going to be stuck with the longest. CPU's and other components come and go but the monitor sits on your desktop for years if you choose wisely. A good site for sifting through all the terms and monitor features is TFT central. Head over there to do some research.

Sorry but missed this when replying with my iPhone yesterday. AFM stands for advanced flight model and it was introduced in the Flaming Cliffs addon and continued in FC2 with the Su25 getting a better 3d model I think to match the T variants level of detail. It is as mentioned previously only for the SU25 vanilla and T models. I don't think that the AFM is up to the level of DCS Blackshark but I'm sure the developers could confirm that.

That's cool but it was Hitman looking for advise on a new build as per the first post of this thread. All I was doing was offering him some advise. In short to get a Sandybridge based system and not an i7-950 socket 1366 like I currently have. :) -

Origin can do it? I'm not sure what you are saying here. -
Jinro, Back in the original Lockon not a single aircraft had the AFM, at least that is what I think was the case as it was quite a few years back now. It was only with the unofficial Flaming Cliffs addon disk that the AFM was introduced into the Su25T/SU25. Yes it is a shame that the AFM wasn't extended to other aircraft within FC2 but that is the way it is. I guess ED were working on DCS A10c and/or other priorities. I still think there is plenty of content and mileage to be found in FC2. And only now am I getting into it having sorted out my computer and I'm having a blast. Just need to get around to programing my X52Pro. :joystick:

Yep only the 25's have AFM. It's a little clumsy that you can set immortal however it is overridden if you fly either of the 25's. Can't say I have come across this being mentioned in any of the documentation but at least I know now.

I really doubt that in real world terms and flight sims you would be able to distinguish or see any difference between tri and dual channel memory. Bottom line is that you will get slightly better stock performance from Sandybridge with massive headroom to easily overclock your 2500k or 2600k which will extend the performance life of your rig. All of this with dual channel memory. On the case, as I said earlier they are personal things because it is your most visible component. Just make sure your case has good airflow, room for upgrades if required, good cable management, and quality built. Haf x, corsair 800 or 700 all tick these boxes along with others. So go with what fits your budget, feature set, and of course looks good. Happy building of your DCS killer rig. -

It does come with wheels if that helps and pretty much all full size cases are heavy unless made of aluminium. Yep that is correct. Sandybridge (LGA 1155) supports dual channel memory so you will be best to go for either 2 x 4gb sticks or 4 x 2gb sticks of RAM. One final thing that I would add regarding memory choice is that there appears little problem in populating all 4 memory banks with RAM sticks and overclocking your system. With some of the old Intel chipsets if you filled up all memory banks it would limit overclocking. A page from a Bit-Tech article highlights that this is not a problem with Sandybridge as per the below link: Sandy Bridge Memory : 4GB (2 DIMM) vs 16GB (4 DIMM) -

+1 to exactly what Pilotasso said on all of the above. The i7 2600k is newer and better than my i7-950 and it also has the same features such as quad core, HT but it will overclock considerably higher that the i7-950. The Coolermaster Haf X is also a great buy and if I didn't have my components inside this Antec P182B then today I would go for the Haf X. Excellent cooling, loads of space, front hot swappable drives and a pair of front USB3 ports to boot. If you don't like the rugged style then obviously look elsewhere. And again on the SSD a single 120GB Sandforce drive such as the OCZ Vertex 2E will be perfect for Windows 7 along with all your premium sims. Get a mchanical HD such as a Samsung F3 1TB or something to store mdeia, photos, and other games and programs on.
