  1. lol, 2 or 3 years to complete an advanced flight model that's already in beta testing? I have to say, I think you're airing pretty heavily on the negative nancy side. Can't wait to see the new and improved F-15C though.
  2. He's saying he wants to integrate his existing ED website-purchased copies of everything in to his Steam account. And to answer that, you can't do all of it yet, but they're working on it. Though in my experience, you probably will have to redownload everything from inside Steam. It won't migrate the existing installation files in to the Steam game folders and whatnot. You'll just be able to add the serial numbers from your purchases and Steam will add them to your account. Regardless of not having a serial number for DCS: World itself, you still have to redownload it anyways to get the full Steam integration. I think ED said they were working on it for the next patch, so hang in there and it should be out soon.
  3. Not that kind of "nuke sub." In his confession he said he did it because he wanted to get off of work early.. So, yeah. An entire US Navy Los Angeles class attack submarine written off for one day of extra TV and beer time. Reasonable, right? What an utter bastard. 17 years is a joke.
  4. Yeah, I definitely wouldn't mind a dynamic campaign like they did in Falcon so many years ago now, but we've got some good stuff until ED works that in too. In quick missions I wouldn't rely purely on the JTACs for targeting information. It's taken a lot of practice but I've learned how to pick out the targets either with the targeting pod or visually, but an easy, if not cheap, alternative is to just turn labels on (somewhere in settings, can't recall off the top of my head) and have at it. Enemies will have a red dot over them and when you get close enough they'll have a little tag saying what they are. JTACs only give you info on a few enemy groups, and like you said, it takes time to go through all the prompts and whatnot and oftentimes friendly AI (air or ground) will take out your targets before you even get your sights on them. Congrats on the HOTAS! I got mine about a year ago and have loved every minute I've spent using it. I'm sure you will too.
  5. Well, frankly I'd recommend all of them. Eventually at least. A-10C is probably best to start with, so I'm glad to see that's what you're planning on getting. It has good depth in the avionics modelling and it's pretty versatile with what you can do in it. You won't get bored with it. It's fun to fly and carries a lot of ordnance, which is always a formula for greatness. UH-1H is the one I find the most fun to just fly around. It's the most challenging to handle flight-dynamics-wise, and of course it's from the 60's, so it basically comes equipped with a compass and a few radios. It won't take several hours just to learn how to power it up. P-51D is great if you're in to classic aircraft, and even if you aren't it's a great all-around aircraft. Not very helpful if you're looking for serious air-to-ground work (.50 cal + FFARs won't make nearly the same dent in some baddie ground forces as an A-10 or Ka-50 will), but it did help save the world and it's a beautiful aircraft. Ka-50 is excellent, not as easy to use as an A-10, but effective and awesome in its own right. You'll be able to loiter around and really pick off every last enemy in the area, which is a bit tougher in the A-10 flying around at 200 kts and 20,000 ft. A good stepping stone in to helicopters if eventually you want to take the plunge in to the autopilot-free world of the Huey. They're all good though, and you really can't go wrong. Congrats on the new TrackIR and enjoy!
  6. ...Which is another reason why a 30 mm round is more prone to ricochet off of water. You know how they say jumping in to water from a bridge is basically equivalent to doing the same with a surface of concrete? Well the same idea applies. Both the bullet and the water have their own inertia, and at the moment that they collide they exert equal and opposite forces on one another. Although the muzzle velocity of the NATO 30x173 mm out of a GAU-8 is only a couple hundred more feet per second than the 5.56x45 mm out of an M-16, the weight of the bullet (grain) means that the 30 mm is carrying kinetic energy that is at least an order of a magnitude greater than the 5.56 mm. That being the case, the 30 mm round is subjected to a great deal more force when it hits the water as compared to the 5.56 mm. That force is easily enough to alter the trajectory of the round enough to cause a ricochet.
  7. Awesome stuff! I play some guitar myself, not at all as good as most of you guys I'm sure, but it's enough for me. I can play some Radiohead (my favorite band for all time) and enjoy myself. I've got a Stratocaster, a Martin acoustic/electric, and a Peavey tube amp. Actually, my old p.o.s. gear that I started with is lying around somewhere too. As far as effects, I've got a WH-1 Whammy and an E-Bow (obviously I have a long way to go towards replicating the Radiohead sound, but it gets me through Just, My Iron Lung, Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, etc.). Really want to pick up a digital delay but I'm pretty strapped for cash right now (trading up for a new motorcycle :D). Cool to see some other guitar enthusiasts also enjoy the pursuits of raining virtual death from the heavens. :pilotfly:
  8. You are a true boss, Skate. I would gladly buy you a beer if you ever make it out to Southern California.
  9. I don't see the harm in some token giant explosion being modeled, nothing that would take up a great deal of ED's time or effort, it's obviously not a pressing matter, but single player might have an extra degree of interest, or it could be used in a campaign where the NATO vs. Russian standoff in Georgia finally goes nuclear at some point. That would be pretty dramatic and cool. But as far as the worries about MP.. No sane server administrator is going to allow people to equip their aircraft with it, at least the big servers where you'll actually find a good sized group of people on a regular basis. Again though, very low priority. I say only do it if it's a quick job, or we're just getting to the point where ED is running out of things to model for us, which is obviously still far off.
  10. Haven't seen this mentioned yet, but I've noticed since the update to 1.2.5 that the Radio Compass Indicator (similar to the HSI in other aircraft) is off by over 100 degrees at startup. I've only seen it in multiplayer with ramp starts, so I don't know if it applies to single player or air starts. In the meantime you can correct for the error by adjusting the knob and that takes care of it as far as I know, but I wanted to make sure this was brought to the attention of the powers that be. Hopefully it will be a thing of the past very soon! Btw, still love the Huey.
  11. There isn't a pitch setting per se, we have a propeller RPM lever. It's a constant speed propeller, so it automatically adjusts pitch to maintain the desired RPM. And there isn't really a magic MP and RPM combination that will make you go faster, other than to push them both to their maximum. If you're trying to outrun somebody you just have to avoid jerky movements that bleed off speed and maybe at the right moment kick in WEP for the allowable 5 minutes. I'd probably get in a steady dive and get down on the deck. I'm sure if you're having a lot of trouble bugging out from a fight it's a matter of how you steer your aircraft vs. how your enemy is steering his. Also, keep in mind that there are much more opportune times to bug out than others, so try to recognize when it's necessary and get out of danger before they're all over your tail.
  12. Well, that explains an awful lot of virtual deaths I've experienced in UH-1H... Thanks! Better late than never, I suppose! :P
  13. What would you have them do? If they can't replicate the problem, they can't diagnose and fix it. Give 'em a break, they are trying.
  14. They've said they'll pursue more conventional means of obtaining funding, so the project will definitely go on. As far as starting another Kickstarter, they've said the $75,000 is what they need to get going and they didn't have an intention of using KS for a lesser amount, but I wouldn't say it was anything definitive. I hope they do start another though, because the $30,000 people pledged is no small chunk of change and it could still be plenty helpful.
  15. Awesome! :D Can't wait to see what you guys can do.
  16. I cannot believe you're still at this. I got busy during the last week and a half and haven't checked the forums much in that time, but it seems like you haven't skipped a beat in bashing KI and their F-35 project. How right was I when I said people like you were behaving more like this was a "personal vendetta" than anything? I don't know how Kinney Interactive could have so grossly offended you, but you clearly have no interest in owning the DCS: F-35 module yourself and there's obviously nothing at this point that KI or anyone can do or say that is going to change your opinion in the slightest. Either you just want to grief anyone who likes this project or you really need to reevaluate how much time you spend flying versus typing in this flight sim hobby of yours. As far as serving your interests is concerned, you should have moved on from this thread ages ago. DCS: F-35 will become a reality despite all the naysaying you or anyone else can muster. Again, all the more reason you should have just quit after the first few posts back when you were still being civil.
  17. Well, a computer. The A-10C's EGI uses a combination of GPS and INS, it has the instruments to measure airspeed and vertical speed, accelerometers, pitot tubes and what have you, it's all combined in some big pile of 1's and 0's and then it interprets all the data to determine what the aircraft is doing and what corrections are needed to maintain the selected mode of flight (path hold, altitude + heading hold, or altitude hold). At the same time, regardless of the autopilot, the aircraft presents all of that data on the instruments in the cockpit. They don't do the actual work itself, they simply relate it in a manner that the human factor in the aircraft can understand and work with.
  18. Speaking of, here's a new link to the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/DCSF35 Just to keep it on top of all the back and forth stuff.
  19. Again, there's no basis for any of us outside of KI to make any judgement on what is "assumed" and what isn't. ED okayed it exactly because they've obviously determined that it's well within a reasonable and acceptable level of realism. None of the developers we've seen here (or anywhere else, except maybe FF since it's virtually all community work) have ever made public every documented piece of information that they're using as the basis for their design work. The pictures on their KS have nothing to do with showing documents or resources, it shows their familiarity with the subject matter. And as a matter of fact, they have a much stronger pedigree than anyone else that's taken up the task of making a module for DCS to date. It's a tough challenge making an F-35 simulator, an even tougher one to make it as real as possible, but this developer has more experience and know-how than anyone that's come on to the DCS scene yet. $28 isn't such a huge loss if you find in a year that for whatever reason it doesn't live up to your expectations. What investment? Nobody pays a dime unless they do get the full $75k. If they get the KS, they get to work on F-35A right away! If they don't, they're going to get their funding elsewhere. It's outrageous that you're looking at this thing and saying "well, I certainly can't get in on this, it might not even make it to the limit!" when all you need to consider is whether you want to add this project on to DCS or not. Newsflash: if it doesn't go through, everyone that participated in the KS will give exactly as much as you; nothing. What the hell is anyone missing out on by supporting the KS even if it doesn't yield anything? I can tell you what they're gaining though. They're getting Beta access, and even with all the negative nancy comments, there's still a decent shot that it can be funded, so they're getting the product sooner and whatever other incentives they've earned with their donation level. I can't believe how many of you are making such a big deal about meeting the minimum objective or "$75k isn't enough." It's such a simple concept. Like DCS: F-35A? Go now and chip in the money you'll be spending on purchasing the module in a year (and at $28 for the full game, that's obviously a significant savings compared to whatever the final price will be when it does get released). What it is is an awesome opportunity for people who want to have an F-35 to fly or even just want to support the development of DCS by helping to ensure that an additional module is developed ASAP and done right without having to deal with investors sticking their fingers in to the mix because they just want to get a bigger profit.
  20. You can but there are a number of reason trying to use BVR mode within a certain distance is much more difficult. First off, the closer you are to your target, the narrower the field of view of your radar has in terms of the minimum and maximum altitudes it's scanning. If there's any substantial difference in altitude between you and your target, you'll find it hard to get just the right slewing adjustment that will allow you to see him. That's what the boresight and vertical scan modes are for, so just practice visualizing where that target is in relation to you as you approach, and put the general area that he's in inside the scanning zone of your HUD, or in the 29 or 27, your HMD. Second, the longer range missiles aren't as adept at close combat because they're much larger and heavier than their short range R-73 and AIM-9 counterparts. They're meant to have more space to acquire and home in on the target, so if it's too close, you might find that the missile misses its target designation, be it radar painting or IR, altogether and goes ballistic. The SARH method is especially susceptible. The -27R and ER are both effective missiles in their element. You just gotta practice how to use them.
  21. For Prophet, myself, and anyone else who's excited about this project and has been watching people trash it so relentlessly for the past 12 hours, the initial snide jab about how the programmers can't even put a fricken image link on a forum properly is obviously more offensive than it probably is to you. If you're a fair person, you can definitely understand where Prophet's response is coming from and that it's not malicious and it's not an attempt to start trouble with anybody.
  22. Okay, it's 2:40 in the morning here, I hope you won't mind if I go for the abridged version: You're making an awful lot of noise for something which really revolves around KI's choice to initiate their KS funding effort now rather than later, but you don't say that, you say it in a diatribe of every aspect that's a result of that choice. You're not sold on what they've presented you. Fine. Wait it out and be cautious. It's not stupid. Everything I've ever said on the subject was to just present very logical reasons to be less critical that most of these naysayers (so far as I can remember at the moment, not you for the most part) are clearly overlooking. What is stupid though is that you're needlessly trash talking this project, when really your only complaint is that you would have them start their fundraising project when they're further along in development so you can feel like your donation is a little more assured to result in a fine product (though by virtue of the name "Kickstarter" I would expect it to be done closer to the start than not). What constitutes reasonable doubt for you is not the same as for most of the people here, and in the meantime you're putting an awful lot of effort in to something that clearly undermines this project and the wishes of everyone who has set up their contribution. You don't have anything to lose, but other people do.
  23. Well there's obviously something going on with peoples' internet connection and whatever server they're hosting it on. Try this. There's absolutely nothing to do with "debating," the guy was straight up rude and insulting after making an obviously snide remark that rubbed somebody the wrong way. If you want debating, I think I've done enough of that for one day in this thread, so have a look-see for yourself. Baiting somebody else in to an argument, more specifically making it a personal issue, that's pretty textbook troll. But you go ahead and think what you like.
  24. Well, it's only the 2nd day in a 15 day period, so who knows. They've said that regardless of whatever happens with Kickstarter, they're moving ahead with F-35A. I'd just take it to mean they couldn't do so at the pace they would otherwise. And they'll honor some of the incentives from KS too (OPEVAL was specifically mentioned, but I don't know about anything else), so seriously, everybody who wants to fly this jet should kick in their $50 now, get their OPEVAL access, and maybe manage to fund this thing so they can really get cracking.
  25. I was thinking more in terms of "exactly how fast can you descend in a hover before VRS sets in," but a 300 fpm rule of thumb is something I'll go with from now on. As far as I can tell, I think it starts at closer to 700-900 fpm, but I can't really tell because I'm usually too focused on just keeping the thing steady to begin with. I ask because I haven't perfected the art of aiming for a reasonable altitude while slowing to a hover, and I'll usually pop up a bit higher than I wanted and I'm anxious to just get on the deck ASAP. Thanks!
