  1. Longer and thinner? Naw... it didn´t carry its nickname for nothing. SLUF (Stubby Little Ugly F***er)
  2. Because moon lasers are highly specialized units operated in very controlled environments, while the TGP needs to have a rugged laser that works any time, every time.
  3. Try this one: http://forums.frugals-world.com/vbb/index.php
  4. A great read, you´ll love it. When I read it, there were several parts where I thought "bullshit, that has got to be made up", only to google it and find out it actually did happen just as he described. Totally mindboggling. Plus it makes you appreciate the A-10 even more. "Hellfire" lies right here on my yet-to-read stack, guess I should have read it before "Apache", huh? There are so many books I can recommend (I read A LOT), it´d make this thread even more OT than it already is. What we need is a book review thread in case there isn´t one yet. Maybe one more if I may: "Once a Fighter Pilot" by Jerry W. Cook. Impossible to put it down; read through it in just two sittings. Okay, two more... :D These are for the german crowd only I´m afraid, don´t think they have been translated: - Jahre des Donners - Mein Leben mit dem Starfighter (Hannsdieter Loy) - Duell unter den Sternen - Tatsachenbericht eines deutschen Nachtjägers (Wilhelm Johnen)
  6. Just ordered his book. What´s your verdict on it?
  7. Whaaaaat? :shocking: :D Dunno, I found parts of "Apache" seriously depressing. The whole part after they rescued Mathew Ford, when the CO talked to them and all of a sudden it all sank through to them? Holy cow man.... believe me when I say I´ve seen more than my share of crap in this world already, but this? Almost made me cry. All in all I have to agree though about "A Nightmare´s Prayer". That dude struck me as coming home being a thoroughly messed up person, and I felt bad for him throughout most of the book. It was weird to see him change from being a pilot who loves aviation and everthing that comes with it to a person who downright hated having to go out on a mission in the end. Really makes you think.
  8. If you turn on your ECM (and leave it on) while fencing in you might as well leave the outside lights on as well... ;)
  9. Is it any good? Hell yeah! Around here it is considered mandatory reading. ;) And while you´re at it, make sure you also read the following titles: - Warthog: Flying the A-10 in the Gulf War (by William L. Smallwood) - Strike Eagle: Flying the F-15E in the Gulf War (also by William L. Smallwood) - Apache: Inside the Cockpit of the World´s Most Deadly Fighting Machine (by Ed Macy) - A Nightmare´s Prayer: A Marine Harrier Pilot´s War in Afghanistan (by Michael Franzak) - Fire Strike 7/9 (by Paul "Bommer" Grahame) - Apache Dawn: Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned (by Damien Lewis) - Predator: The Remote-Control Air War over Iraq and Afghanistan: A Pilot´s Story (by Matt J. Martin) - The Warthog and the Close Air Support Debate (by Douglas N. Campbell) That should just about cover the basics. ;) I have read every book on this list and can vouch for the quality of every single one.
  10. Make sure the ITT is below 150°C before you attempt a restart. Also, in case you have not activated the inverter before attempting to start the engine the ignition won´t work, which in turn means the combustion chamber will be flooded with fuel. To get rid of that fuel move the throttle to the off position and then move and hold the ENG OPER switch from the NORM to the MOTOR position. Hold it there for about a minute or so, then set it back to NORM and try to start the engine again. Actually, motoring the engine also helps if your ITT is above 150°C.
  11. DCS World is the "mothership" to which all the other modules (the A-10, the P-51, the Ka50 etc.) connect. DCS World itself is free and brings all the files needed by every single module (the map, weapon systems, basic flightmodels, AI aircraft, the works) plus a flyable SU-25T free of charge. The modules (A-10C, P-51 etc.) just add their specific content to that world, saving a lot of harddrive space and making things easier in general. Also, DCS World comes with an autoupdater so you won´t ever have to update anything at all anymore, it´s all being done for you. The modules won´t be able to run by themselves anymore, there MUST be DCS World installed in order for them to work. That is true for every version above 1.2. In case you have a standalone version installed already, you need to do the following: - Deinstall everything that has to do with DCS, including saved games - Download and install DCS World in its newest version (should be 1.2.1) - Download and install all the aircraft modules you have bought and install them, they will place themselves into DCS World automatically - Run DCS World and let the autoupdater bring you up to the current level. The keys that came with your standalone versions can be used with DCS World as well. You do not need to buy anything again. As for DCS Combined Arms, it is a module as well. However, instead of bringing another aircraft to the table, it actually lets you play the ground war. You can hop into a number of vehicles (tanks, AAA, IFVs etc) and fight the enemy, or you can move entire units around on a map. It´s still in beta though. Last but not least, if the text in these forums is too small for you, press down the left control key while scrolling your mousewheel. That´ll make the text larger or smaller, depending on what direction you scroll the wheel.
  12. Takes at least four minutes for me as well, and that´s quite normal. ;) The IRU takes four minutes to fully align, and before it is aligned you will not be able to arm the EAC.
  13. I take it you´re only gonna sell them as sets, right? I´d be interested in the lights panel only, but can understand if you don´t wanna deal with the hassle of selling them one by one instead of bulk.
  14. I for one will skip Win 8 completely and wait for Win 9. Why? This is why: Windows 3.11: Good Windows 95: Meh Windows 98: Good Windows ME: Meh Windows XP: Good Windows Vista: Meh Windows 7: Good Notice a pattern?
  15. Well, I own a Warthog and I am a firefighter. As such my salary is public and can be looked up by anyone who cares (if anyone from Germany actually does care: A9 in the TVöD table plus some bonuses like hazard pay and shift duty extras). I walk home with just a tad over €2500 a month*. If that puts me in the top 1% income bracket, this country is in dire straits. :D * Yeah, I´m not exactly in it for the money I guess...
  16. Derk, if you don´t mind hopping in the car and driving for approximately three hours, you may wanna consider driving over to the "Heeresfliegerwaffenschule" of the German Army. It is located in the little town of Bückeburg, and they have every type of helicopter currently in service with the Army. Since we still use a bunch of UH-1Ds, they have them there as well. Attached to it is a really nice helicopter museum (www.hubschraubermuseum.de), and last time I have been there they had an UH-1D on exhibit. When I was there most helicopters could be freely climbed into. They have recently rebuilt the museum however, so I´m not sure if you can still get into the choppers. You may wanna check with them in advance via email. In case they don´t have a UH-1D you can crawl around in, here is the contact data of the officer responsible for PR: Phone +49 5722 - 968 - 3310 Email HFlgWaS@bundeswehr.org Send him an email and tell him what you want and why you want it. In my experience they are incredibly open to all kinds of weird requests and may just give you a chopper to take pics and take measurements. I know for a fact that they have done stranger things already. ;) If all that fails you should try and find out when there is the next open house day of some squadron or an airshow nearby, they pretty much always bring some choppers along to those occasions. To find out what´s coming up, go to http://www.deutschesheer.de and click on "Hier finden Sie die Termine des Deutschen Heeres" on the very top of the rightmost column. That gives you a pdf with all the upcoming public dates within the next two to three months. Look for anything containing the words Hubschrauber, Transporthubschrauber or Heeresflieger and send them an email or call them. Just spam them to death until they have enough and finally fly a Huey over to you. :D So yeah, those are my ideas for now. Best of luck!
  17. Or.. just get a prepaid card, most banks offer them for free. Put 18 bucks on it, buy the sim, throw the card away.
  18. I beg to differ. 10,000 (actually it´s more like 15,000 already I believe) is no small number for such highly specialized hardware. Also, contrary to you I do believe the TM WH is worth every single penny. Just because hall sensors are dirt cheap and not really something one would want to advertise nowadays doesn´t mean the rest of the stick (and throttle) is not of very high quality. Thrustmaster is to be applauded to take the risk of developing, producing and marketing a stick like this. I´m sure it was not a cheap endavour on their part and it was a bit of a gambling move to make a high-quality stick that can only be used for one single aircraft really. They put all their money on the A-10C of DCS becoming a success. Had it tanked, sales for the TM WH probably wouldn´t even have been a quarter of what they are now. Again, from a business point of view Thrustmaster took so many risks with this product, it just boggles your mind. Part of that risk is being put straight onto the price tag, and I for one don´t have a problem with that. It´s a business decision TM made, and I understand why they made it. Last but not least, they are a company and can price their product any way they see fit. You live in a free country (I hope) and can choose whether to buy it or not for that price. If you think the price is alright, you buy the product. If you think the price is ridiculous, you move on. Simple as that. Vote with your wallet, the company will get the message eventually - if enough people think like you. If the company does not get the message and sells their product happily instead, it may mean there are not enough people thinking like you. Personally, I believe products from Volkswagen are ridiculously overpriced for what they offer (in my country at least) and I would never ever buy one. Yet one of their models is the best selling car over here year after year, so I guess a couple million people do not share my view in this matter. Does it give me sleepless nights? Not really. Am I running around, telling owners of a VW how they have been ripped off? Not really. Do said owners care about my opinion? Not really. Obviously they are happy with the product, so who am I to tell them they made a wrong choice?
  19. Don´t really see the connection here. Hall sensors are dirt cheap and anything but special. Little anecdote if I may: The other day my dad was over at my place for a visit. He recently retired and has been an engineer for all his life, mostly doing automotive and aerospace stuff. When he saw my TM WH he grabbed it and said it was quite nice, felt good, nothing like the usual plastic sticks etc. Now, him being the engineer that he is, he wanted to know the technical details of the TM WH, so I handed him the box that it came in. He read all the advertisement mumbo-jumbo on the side of it, and when he came to the bullet point saying "With hall sensors!!!!!!!!11oneeleven" he actually burst out laughing. I asked him what´s so funny about hall sensors, after all it´s quite a selling point for TM. He looked at me and said it´s as if Porsche would advertise their new car by saying "comes with a steering wheel!" I said something to the effect of "wtf are you talking about?", and he said of course a joystick would have hall sensors, and it cracked him up to see it as something they would print on the box. Of course I was like "but they say it´s the latest and greatest, everyone praises it for having hall sensors", to which my dad just replied "well, what else would they put in there? Potentiometers?", and I said "ummm... yeah." My dad then had one of those moments where you realize your interlocutor is not bs´ing you but actually means what he says. His eyes became quite wide, and he said "wait a minute, are you telling me other manufacturers really do put potentiometers in there?". When I said they do, he was just mumbling something about this not being 1970 anymore, and wtf they must be smoking to use such an antiquated technology. He really couldn´t believe it. To this day he always jokes about starting up a company producing sim hardware, and how the single biggest thing he would print on the backside of every unit would be "MADE IN GERMANY", just so everyone knows it´s actually properly engineered. :D
  20. Sad to hear that, it was one of the very few servers not password-protected where everyone could have fun. I wish more people would open up their servers to the public, as it has become quite difficult to fly a mission or two with a friend online these days. :( Thanks for providing this server for so long Sleem, the community really owes you for it. It´s always been a pleasure to be a guest on your server, and I for one salute you for your efforts.
  21. Your rig should run the sim just fine. What DCS needs is a powerful CPU, and you´ve got that one covered. If you have a little spare cash you may wanna consider picking up a GTX 670 or even 680. Won´t help you all that much in DCS (and the 660 is a mighty fine card too, don´t get me wrong), but other games will really profit from it. EDIT: Not sure if you already have one or not, but I can also recommend getting an SSD. Doesn´t need to be all that big, just enough to run Windows, the DCS series plus another thing or three. It won´t give you more frames, but helps a lot in case you experience stuttering, and also the load times are just absolutely sweet. From cold to desktop in less than 15 seconds is something you will really start to appreciate.
  22. I hear you, bro. This is me when I told my gf how much I shelled out for the TM WH HOTAS: :chair: Funny thing is she earns her own money (more than me even, with her being a lawyer and all) and shouldn´t really care what I do with my own money. Oh well, women. Can´t live with them, can´t live without them. The cool thing is, I´m getting my very own man cave next summer. I´m already giggling like a little girl just thinking about it. This will be me when I finally get it: :cheer3nc: Now I just need to convince her that the Obutto cockpit is 200 bucks tops, if even that.... and those two new 27" monitors? Naaaw... they are not new honey, had them forever, just didn´t use them yet... No really, I swear. Honey? Sweetie? Put that rolling pin down before anyone gets hurt, will ya? Please...?
  23. Hi all, could you please help me out with something? I need all the dimensions of the pre-drilled holes of the steering wheel mount: Their diameters, their distance from each other, their distance from the edges of the mount and so on. Could someone please whip out a caliper and give me those dimensions? Metric dimensions would be preferred, but I take imperial as well. It just needs to be as precise as possible. Thanks in advance! :)
  24. You can lase at any time (provided the laser is not masked by the aircraft) by pressing the pinky button on the stick.

    Ziele finden ?
