  1. Well, since nobody has explained this one yet, let me have a go at it... Naw, just kidding. :D Another thing I found interesting when reading the book was the fact that sometimes they would purposely communicate on open frequencies (unscrambled frequencies the enemy could listen to as well) just so the enemy knew there were Wild Weasels in the air. On top of that they would call out "Magnum" every now and then, even if they didn´t carry HARMs at all. All that just to make sure the enemy kept their heads down. The ultimate game of hide and seek - except for when you lose, it´s rather permanent.
  2. I just got done reading "Viper Pilot" by Dan Hampton. He was an F-16 pilot and flew Wild Weasel missions for almost his entire career. It was interesting to note that he really, really, really despised using the AGM-88 HARM. To him that weapon was absolutely useless, because at best it could supress the thread, but not kill it. Instead of spamming the area with HARMs he much preferred going in close, dancing with the SAMs using the proper techniques (maneuvering, always maintaining visual contact with the missiles, using towed decoys and of course chaff and flare), wrestling the SAM site down that way by making it expand all its ordnance and then going in and dropping a CBU-87 on it (many times he didn´t even do that but just strafed the site instead). If he had Mavericks available he used them to kill the SAM sites from a little further away, but he still needed to fight his way in because the SAM sites he was going up against had much better range than his Mavericks. It was not uncommon for him to have three or four missiles against him in the air at the same time, and he clearly states that more often than not his survival was down to pure luck. However, he very clearly states that this is the only way a Wild Weasel mission really works. It´s not really SEAD that is desireable, but DEAD. HARMs are nice for SEAD and keep the launching platform safe, but they don´t achieve anything in the long run. That´s also why - in his opinion - the strong emphasis towards UAVs is a very big mistake. They may be able to perform SEAD missions, but will always lack the situational awareness necessary to perform a DEAD mission. All in all quite an interesting book. He also has some very nice things to say about the A-10 and especially A-10 pilots, while being not so nice about other platforms sometimes. ;) Oh, and if you´re french you may wanna avoid reading that book altogether... :D
  3. Just to be clear here, would I need to pay that sum, or would I receive that sum if I let them shake my hands? Oops, gotta run, there´s what appears to be a banhammer coming in at supersonic speed... :D
  4. No need to buy anything at all, your serial works across all versions. What you need to do is: 1. Uninstall everything 2. Install DCS World (download it here) 3. Install the modules you want (download them here) 4. Play It´s quite simple really. Not sure what the rest of your post with all those computers and places where you lived has to do with anything, so I leave that part of the answer (if there is any) to others.
  5. Actually it´s seven million dollars (!!) already. I threw 65 bucks at them just to show Chris and his team my support and appreciation. Oh, and to reserve my Origin 300i ship of course. :D
  6. :( EDIT: Pages 266-298 in the manual for the DSMS, page 261 for how to bring up the LOAD page.
  7. Sure, no problem at all. Even the F-16 can almost get there.
  8. To add to the above, keep in mind you will also need to reload the DSMS page whenever you load new weapons.
  9. I don´t understand the problem?!?
  10. Well... no. ;) Aerobraking refers to maintaining a very high AOA while rolling out (in other words: keeping up your nosewheel for as long as you can) so your entire fuselage acts as one giant airbrake by trapping the air underneath it. Aerobraking works very good for aircraft with strakes (F-18, F-16), wide fuselages (F-14, F-15) or delta shaped wings (Typhoon, Mirage 2000). However, aircraft with straight wings, a short chord and narrow fuselage - such as the A-10 - are very ineffective aerobrakers. Speed brakes or air brakes are those barndoors at the end of the wing of the A-10 which you pop open upon landing so they can stem themselves into the slipstream and create drag. Nothing special about them, most aircraft have them in some form or shape.
  11. A little over four hours to go - if you haven´t signed up yet, you should do so now. This thing is FUN! :)
  12. Oh.. umm... well.. I... aahh... *cough* I only read the important postings?!? Well, that´s one of the things they actually fixed with the current patch. :D
  13. Huh? It states exactly what I said: Don´t use aerobraking if minimum landing distance is of concern to you. Straight out of the Dash 1 (bold by me):
  14. Greg, since I have constant server crashes ever since the current update, can you please make sure to consider taking this action: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=1616591#post1616591 Seems to really make a difference. Thanks!
  15. Hmm, I can´t really see the significant difference between "not good" and "bad". If there is a difference I apologize. Since english is not my first language (not even my second one, lol) I may have made a mistake without realizing it. In any case I didn´t want to say anything bad about Mower and I hope it didn´t come across like that. He´s a cool guy and I enjoy reading his posts. The aerobraking thing was just something that struck my atttention. Well, I for one can say that I don´t have an argument with anyone on this forum, neither old nor current. Usually I get along with pretty much everyone just fine, even if that person has a different opinion. Sometimes even because that person has a different opinion. :D Just to make sure (because it isn´t clear to me), you do know the difference between "Speed Brakes" and "Aerobraking", right? They are two totally different things. The Dash 1 (the real manual of the real A-10) says to bring the nose down as quickly as possible and use max speed brakes if you want the shortest stopping distance. It also says to not do any aerobraking, as it has little effect on the A-10 and only increases your landing distance. The Dash 1 is actually freely available on the internet, look it up if you´re interested in performance data and more diagrams and tables than you can shake a stick at. The DCS A-10´s numbers come very close to the ones in the Dash 1, it´s quite amazing really. And I think you need glasses. :music_whistling:
  16. Neither. It just simply doesn´t do anything at all, as several people including me have reported by now.
  17. That´s what credit cards are for... :D
  18. Actually, that´s bad advice. Aerobraking works with certain jets like for example the F-16, but is utterly useless with the A-10. Not only that, it even increases the landing distance. What you wanna do in the A-10 is to get the nose wheel down to the ground as soon as you can (doing it gently of course) and don´t forget to open up the speedbrakes to the full extent (without weight on wheels they won´t open up all the way).
  19. Dude, I´d actually pay money to see that video... :D
  20. Rosenkranz? Taliban? I think you have a thing or two mixed up here. ;)
  21. Not at all! Even with 20+ aircraft in the air, everything was smooth as silk. The only problem is the weather engine however, all it can do is cloudless skies and blistering heat. :D
  22. When EagleEye says "normal bank card" I assume he is talking about the so called "EC-Karte", which most people here have indeed. It is a debit card albeit with rather limited functionality. As opposed to what he says though, that card is not given to you by default. With every single account I ever opened, no matter what bank it was, I always had to check a box saying I want that card. If you leave it unchecked, you don´t get it. In fact I don´t own a single one of them, as I just don´t have the need for it. I get my bank statements online, and the ATM works just fine with a credit card. Oh, and they are not free either (have you ever seen a bank giving you anything for free? See, me neither...), they usually cost between five and ten bucks, which is just a one-time fee however (to cover the costs of producing and distributing them I guess). The only thing you get for free is a card with which you can get printed bank statements and which allows you to withdraw money from an ATM. That one is indeed free, but it´s not a debit card. All you can do with it are the two things mentioned above. Still, the majority of Germans use this antiquated system and refuse to move over to credit cards like the rest of the civilized world has done 20+ years ago. Quite embarrasing really for a country that otherwise lives at the cutting edge of technology in many areas.
  23. Well, that I can confirm. I´ve been to Nevada in 2009, and even visited Nellis AFB. Everything I saw looked pretty much done. Oh, and the level of detail was just mindblowing! :D
  24. Well, you can get prepaid credit cards, most banks even offer them for free to go along with your regular checking account. They offer the same functionality as real credit cards minus the credit part of course. So the means are there, it´s just that Germans refuse to use them for whatever reason. Wait till I tell you how I wanted to fill up my car at a gas station one day and upon paying found out they don´t accept credit cards (unlike the US, over here you pump first and then you pay). You´d think they would at least put a huge note on the pump, but no... Much fun was had that day by everyone involved, including the police. You should switch to another bank. Seriously.
  25. Amen brother. I also wish Germans would quit their stupid paranoia about credit cards already and move up into the year 2012 in this regard. I travel around quite a bit, and it just boggles my mind how backward this otherwise hi-tech country is when it comes to credit cards. They are accepted and in use all over the world, I just don´t understand why my fellow countrymen hate them so much. They are dirt cheap to use, easy to get and convenient to handle. I just don´t get it. A couple of days ago I was shopping around for a new tv and went to a store of one of these huge electronic chains. Chose a very nice tv by Samsung after being given advice by a sales drone for almost an hour and comparing a bunch of models and went to the checkout so I could buy my new baby. Well, guess what... I found out they didn´t accept credit cards. Can you believe that? Imagine standing in a Best Buy in the US and they tell you "sorry, cash only". Truth be told, I was flabbergasted and at first actually thought the cashier was pulling a prank on me. Well, end of story: I left the tv right there at the checkout, walked out without one, went home, got on the internet and ordered the same tv online, using a CC of course. Actually saved my a few bucks AND I had it delivered to the doorstep the very next day. That chain store lost almost € 800 on me just because they didn´t accept credit cards. Actually they will lose even more on me, since I will definitely never shop there again except for some small stuff maybe, when I have enough cash on me. Totally ridiculous, as if we are some ****ing third world country.
