Wow!! What an awesome Sim... with the right HOTAS!!
Cookie replied to MatzWarhog's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I use the Pro Clip as well and couldn´t be happier. Just like Danny I tend to throw my headset around and accidentally drop it to the floor quite often, so far the Pro Clip took all the abuse like a... umm.. pro. Excuse the cheap pun. Anyway, again just like Danny I too secured the cables with some cable ties. Where the Clip connects to the headset there is a little notch or recess in the unit, and once I found the perfect position for the clip I put some cable tie around it and pulled it really tight. That way the clip doesn´t move around anymore (which it didn´t really do beforehand either, but I just like to be double sure with these things - hey, I´m German, I need to overengineer things or I can´t get to sleep at night... :D) and more importantly, it doesn´t open up when I knock my headset around. Additionally I used some more cable ties to attach the cable of the pro clip to the cable of the headset, making it essentially one cable instead of two. Makes handling the thing a bit easier, that´s all. I use one cable tie per foot of cable, that´s plenty to make them stay toghether. Btw, for the cables I used the velcro type zip ties so I wouldn´t have the hard plastic of the normal cable ties scratching my neck. Makes it a bit more comfortable to wear and also gives you greater flexibility because you can take them off and on again at your leisure. Just so you will be able to better visualize what I´m babbling about, I attached some pics so you can see what I mean. Taken with the cell phone, so not the best quality, but you get the idea. -

Do you no longer need internet connection to play DCS?

Made me chuckle... ;) -
Just get across the border (your southern one that is) and make a daytrip down to Spangdahlem when they have their next Open House. It´s been quite a few years since I have been there last (they still had the A-10A in fact), but they would let me crawl all over the Hog and I got to get on the nerves of some pilots until I ran out of questions. :D Good times! To check out dates monitor http://www.spangdahlem.af.mil. Also keep an eye on Bitburg and Ramstein airbases. When those two have an Open House there´s usually a bunch of A-10s there as well, since all three bases are basically next to each other. I would even wait with the flying bit until you have the TrackIR. Makes it SO much easier, it´s almost unreal.

T.Hotas Warthog VS X52 pro what to buy
Cookie replied to cyprus's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Yup, no problem. -
Just take it step by step, one thing after another. Don´t attempt to fight in the Hog until you know how to fly it. ;) Don´t rush yourself, and don´t move on the next learning goal until you have the current one totally mastered in every single aspect. Keep repeating things, work up a muscle memory (especially important later on, when you are in combat and can´t look up what button on your HOTAS does what) and fly the training missions over and over and over again, and when you are done with them, fly them another time. And then one more time, and then again. Keep in mind that it takes several years for real pilots to become combat ready, so don´t expect to be up and running in two weeks. Be prepared to not even get into the air the first couple of days, but to spend time on the ground learning the various systems, starting the baby up and shutting her down again. This is no simple first person shooter or some x-box game, this is a real sim. It requires determination, discipline and the will to learn. The learning curve is steep as hell, but once you have mastered it there is nothing better in the world than taking her out for a spin. Stick with it, the reward will be enormous. Much better than anything a simple game like CoD, BF3 or whatever their names are could ever give you. P.S. As for a simpit, it´s not a question of "if", but of "when". Trust me on this one. ;) I suggest you check put the products http://www.obutto.com has to offer. The guy who makes these is an avid simmer himself and knows what we need and want, and his stuff has earned quite a good reputation while still being very affordable. Oh, and as for the TrackIR, you wanna get that before you get anything else. It´s not nice to have, it´s mandatory. If mine broke down I´d rather not fly until the replacement is here than to attempt to fly without it. You have to experience it to believe it.

T.Hotas Warthog VS X52 pro what to buy
Cookie replied to cyprus's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
I just put up a quick and dirty video for you: I tried to flip the switch in a normal way and in a quiet one, and lastly as loud as I could. Maybe it helps you some. I took the video with my mobile phone and it was just one hand-length away from the switch, so in the video it´s actually a tad bit louder than it would really be if you were a little farther away from it. Make sure you select HD to get the best audio quality. Anyway, hope it helps. :) -
You toggle them with the boat switch.

I really wish ED would make this point much clearer on their website. Every single day there are people on these forums asking about this very topic, and they are all confused (understandably so). Actually, the entire website is rather confusing and doesn´t explain things well at all. I don´t even wanna think about how many potential new customers ED has already lost due to this mess.

is it possible to zpdate from 1.2.0.3205 ????
Cookie replied to FZG_Immel's topic in DCS World 1.x (read only)
No way to upgrade other than downloading the entire thing. The autoupdater was introduced with 1.2.1, so your friend is having a bit of bad luck here. -
Just checking in to say what a great time I had last night. Thank you so much for organizing this for us, it brings the gameplay to a whole new level. We (the guys from Colt Flight) spent many hours after the actual battle analyzing everything via TacView, and it was awesome seeing how everyone had a strategy and how some worked and some didn´t. All in all it was an awesome evening, and I can´t wait for next week to come around so we can have another go at it. :)

Dude, chill! Ever heard of "whatever floats your boat"? I´m about as hardcore as it gets when it comes to realism, especially when playing online, but every now and then I just feel like hopping into the Hog and having a little session of Air Quake. Nothing wrong with that. Yeah, we all bear that stigma I guess. :D Oh well, cherish that mancave of yours, I´ll soon have one too and plan on going totally nuts with it... :joystick: BTW, if you´re interested in a printed manual, check out this deal our forum member chaotikchiken negotiated: http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=96133 For around 20 bucks it´s a steal. -
Moving your head a bit to the left or right is hard and requires practice? Ooookay... ;)

Yeah, once you don´t have to think about it anymore but just do it instead, you´ll be able to do things you never would´ve thought possible. Quite cool really. It does come with side effects though... like for example when you sit in your car and you wanna look something up with your GPS device, and instead of moving your hand over to it you actually try to make it your SOI with your left index finger on the steering wheel while zooming in with the right thumb on the gear shift... and when the conscious part of your brain realizes what the subconscious part of it just tried to do, it makes you feel like the biggest dimwit on earth. Not that anything like the above ever happened to me.. no... I... um... heard it from someone who once read about it in a book. Yup, that´s it. -

Just wait until you have completed your first mission, with tracers zipping past you, manpads angrily opening up on you, something ripping off part of your vertical stabilizer, all while you deliver death and destruction from above in 30mm sized chunks of love. With smoking wrecks behind you, you limp home, parts of your bird just outright missing, while others have holes they didn´t have when you ingressed. And when you finally put her back on earth, taxi back to the stand with all kinds of fluids leaking from her... then... that´s the magic moment when your adrenaline level starts going back to normal again, you sit back, release the controls which you have held on to so tight with clenched hands all the time, and when you think "whoa... holy shit!" Only to start her up again and get right back into it. -
How to detect and counter an incoming IR SAM?
Cookie replied to Hoggorm's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Well, a figher needs chaff, not flare. I never felt the need to have more flare in a fighter, while I constantly do so in the A-10. In fact I usually go ahead and leave chaff at home so I can take more flare along. The situations in which you need chaff are not like those when you need flare. When a radar guided missile is being fired at you, you have a lot more time to deal with it. You had advance warning via the RWR, you usually have altitude you can work with, you can beam the missile. You drop a few chaff before initiating a break and maybe one or two in between just for good measure. Whenever an IR missile is fired at you however, things usually are way different. You have no advance warning at all, the time between launch and impact is very short, you usually don´t have much altitude to work with, outmaneuvering the missile is nearly impossible unless you have a visual right away and time your breaks perfect. All in all, it´s usually much more of an OMGWTFBBQ situation than with radar missiles. Your best - and sometimes only - option is to pump out those flares like there is no tomorrow, because there might just as well not be one for you if you don´t do it right away. For that simple reason it is my personal opionion (and that´s all we´re talking about here) that the A-10 does not carry enough flare for the kind of mission it was originally designed for: Flying 100ft above the Fulda Gap in WW III. -
Yup, here. Not limited to 7204 though, DCS has crashed on me before, since, and probably will in the future. Last night I actually managed to land after a mission, which was incredibly exciting for me. Why? Because the game usually crashes before I am even on my way back to the homeplate. Couldn´t even remember the last time I actually got to land after a mission. So yeah... it crashes left and right, and it always has.

How to detect and counter an incoming IR SAM?
Cookie replied to Hoggorm's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
For those down low attack runs I leave it on semi, but switch the program manually to D and start pumping out chaff and flares when tipping in. Takes just two pushes with the thumb (on a TM Warthog HOTAS anyway) and is a very nice allround-program. If missiles actually start flying I just give it another push with the thumb and bring up program E. Same as D, but doubles the amount of stuff you drop. Those two programs have been all I ever needed so far. For a dedicated ground attack aircraft the A-10 sure does carry quite a low number of flares though... Wonder why that is, since flares are not too heavy, don´t use up too much space and are cheap. -

Tired of damage and don't want to restart CDU/TAD/etc.. here!
Cookie replied to WildBillKelsoe's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
No, it doesn´t, and neither does the real one. Well, in that case you need to use ground power of course (or just do the regular start up again), but for all other cases it´s way easier to just switch on the APU and the APU generator, especially since you can already do so while taxiing in, saving some time. -

If there is any way at all for you to cough up the cash, go ahead and get TrackIR. It´s a total gamechanger. Real pilots try to survive by keeping their head on a constant swivel and maintaining situational awareness at all times, and without TrackIR that is almost impossible to do. -

??? Or... just use the APU? -
You know, on the one hand that is pretty pathetic, on the other hand I couldn´t help but snicker when I read that... :D
