True. You can't fight bureaucracy ...
-
This is all about A 10 being retired and it's suggested that F35 will fulfill it's role (CAS) in the future. For special strikes and covert missions F35 is of course far superior. The argument is: Why on Earth you would risk to put F35 worth $130 million in CAS high risk environment (small fire, manpads) when there is equipment ten times cheaper with decades old excellent track record in the field? I don't get it, honestly. :D
-
Indeed. It is. It comes at huge price though, it is roughly ten times more expensive than A10. The main question is: Does it replace ten A10 in real world CAS scenarios?
-
F35 project is controversial ... for a reason. Way too expensive for intended role and scenarios not very likely to happen. Especially in this economy ... Well, if you fail to establish air supremacy and your opponent's air defenses remain fully operational in the air or on the ground, your attack failed. You don't send troops in (ergo, you don't fly CAS) because it would be a slaughter ... ;)
-
Give one example where stealth was needed for CAS sortie in the last couple of decades. Now, for Air Superiority fighter you NEED stealth, because you fly in high threat environment until you hopefully establish air supremacy and RADAR free battlefield. Only after that you move the ground troups in and can fly CAS. No need for stealth. The only possible scenario when you would need stealth for CAS/ground attack plane is full scale invasion on Russia and China (or covert operations). Now, that is not very likely to happen, isn't it? :)
-
There is already pretty potent SEAD arsenal in USAF which is used to suppress RADAR targeting of A10 or any other airplane doing CAS . So basically you always want to send CAS sortie (and troops) in RADAR free environment. If the other side has RADAR capabilities and modern, last generation missiles you cannot fly CAS without significant losses. Even with F35. Simple as that. Fast CAS is oxymoron. Yes, you could drop JDAMS or other guided munitions fast, but those pesky Talibans won't just pop up from bushes, caves and trenches, to stop pinning down ground forces because there is invisible F35 supercruising at 35.000 feet. You have to loiter low for a while ...
-
Wrong. You forget one thing - it's not about the project and legal stuff only, it's about the mutual trust and relation small developer - community as well. Trust is not something which you build upon with legal mumbo-jumbo. ;)
-
They (Leatherneck Simulation) are fresh business, as stated. Let them fight their business and legal battles. Good luck! :D We as a consumers really don't need to know this inner stuff and all the legal hurdles which face every business out there. Having said that, backer's money and its whereabouts is very important issue of great public importance. Beczl Studio should issue a statement ASAP regarding money. It is nice that guys who continue the MiG21bis project will honor the original backers, but that doesn't answer the main question: 'What happened to the money?" This is moral thing to do. The good will and trust of the community is at stake, if you wish. Beczl studio is still part of our small flight simulator community, right? Whatever happened between you and the new MiG21 team doesn't have anything to do with ordinary guys who enthusiastically supported the project. So, if someone from Beczl Studio reads this, please respond (here or wherever else you want) and give a statement what happened to indiegogo $15,000. People who backed the project up, have right to know.

"Qui tacet consentire non videtur"

Great news! I sincerely hope that you will regain lost trust as a result of the reckless statement from the previous head of the project. There is rough road ahead, but looking at the quality, SMEs and seriousness of the people involved with Leatherneck Simulations, I don't see any problem. Warm wishes!

There is one possible and very rational reasoning behind this decision and that is export sales. You cannot sell $130 million worth of high tech weaponry if you don't use it yourself. http://trade.gov/nei/ So there you go.
-
It's all about the other end - US tax payer's money, but that's not on me to comment being non US citizen.
-
Oh well, I don't see economical logic at all, but if US wants to bomb Al-Qaeda or the goat herders turned Taliban with F35 instead of A10, it's OK with me. :D I cannot imagine modern war where F35 would be useful and where it could do more damage than combination of other assets in USAF today ... And wars for which it is projected for, will never happen. It looks that generals in USAF have to find a reason for F35 existence :D
-
What if someone manage to shoot down the mega expensive F-35 (if doing CAS, sooner or later it has to go low, and everything is possible even with old tech when fighting aircraft which flies low)? Huge political mess! Much bigger than hypothetical shooting down of A10. Don't forget that one downing of F-117 by inferior Soviet era technology practically ended service life of that plane. In war, you HAVE to think about and expect losses. Huge gamble to use F35 for roles that A10 covers well enough.

http://eu.mouser.com/ Search for Honeywell, Vishay ... Honeywell mill spec stuff is top notch (it's used in NATO military aircraft actually :) ) or Vishay ... http://www.vishay.com/resistors-variable/potentiometers/ Do a Google search on all of these.

worth to wait for Z97 boards?
danilop replied to SuperKungFu's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
There is no such thing as a "future proof" computer, part or technology. "Future proofing" is great marketing tool meant to cover one of the major concerns of the consumer who cannot chew on the idea that his/her brand new system is basically old tech right out of the box. It's all about what's available and stable NOW and/or what you need to get the job done at the moment. Give it year or two, every computer technology / advancement is completely obsolete anyway. That's the nature of the IT market. The best strategy is to upgrade every other CPU/mobo/GPU cycle. There is nothing wrong with Z87/Haswell/GTX7xx/R2xx systems. Get the system based on the current mainstream technology and pass on the next advancement (z97 etc). Upgrade after that. Or start with Z97 and do the same. Mind you, you'll have to wait for that brand new platform to get stable after announced spring / early summer release, which means sometime around Christmas this year or even later. -
Very long times at launch DCS and starting a mission
danilop replied to Snake-fx's topic in Game Performance
Are you connected to the internet while experiencing slow start in DCSW? -
Actually, lot of equipment designed and developed during Cold War era is practically useless against capable, modern opponent, especially after huge advancement of the modern guided missile technology in the recent years. However, I don't see that US will ditch all of its Cold War arsenal anytime soon - those are proven weapons of choice in the conflicts which US has been fighting for the last couple or so decades - against opponents still stuck with Cold War era equipment.

Personally, I don't care who was, is or will be in charge - they are (or act as) business entity (they've took large amount of money upfront from enthusiastic members of community for the upcoming MiG21 project). This is not free module. They should have sorted this out without going public (IIRC, Laszlo started this all with statement that MiG21 project is dead). It is internal management thing, really. The only important thing now is to get MiG21 released as scheduled. :)

$500 to spend. GPU or Warthog?
danilop replied to dogslax41's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Hard decision. You need both good GPU and HOTAS. You mentioned that quality of the stick is important to you, so the decision is much easier. Treat yourself with TMWH and start saving for the new GPU :) . Wait for the EDGE and see what GPU muscle it will need for smooth performance. That TMWH will keep you occupied in the meantime. -
It was not possible to register anything yesterday (after announcement). Now it's working  30$ quick bonus :music_whistling:

Trust Germans (Beyerdynamic, Sennheiser) and Austrians (AKG. BTW, if you want great closed design with open sound quality, check out K270-271 monitoring series. Open and clear sound from closed design) when you want great headphones or especially headsets (ask broadcast people). ;) They've been standard for decades in the pro audio market (there are couple of Japanese companies like Audiotechnica and Sony, too) and that tells you that quality and long term reliability is way beyond those found on cheap consumer oriented stuff. Now, gaming market is huge and all above-mentioned companies make "gaming" stuff. It's marketing twist - basically they're recycling their pro tech and expertise. They come with price tag, but money goes to actual build and sound quality. You cannot go wrong with any of them, if impedance is low. You don't want high impedance design (say greater than 80 ohms) on low powered consumer outputs.
-
You're not alone :music_whistling:

For PC gaming, I've been using my trusty Beyerdynamic DT 250 (80ohm version is good compromise and it's easy load for consumer outputs found on PCs) for ages. Accurate, clean sounding and extremely reliable. Those are pro headphones made by pro company and every part is user replaceable - from drivers to cable. Basically, you can buy parts and put the headphones together from scratch. So, you can use them forever. If you want headphones only that sound great and which you will still use in ten years time, these are highly recommended. Now, I needed some new gaming headsets, so I've got Razer Blackshark few weeks ago. Sound is obviously lot worse than DT250 (Bass is mushy and lower mids lack definition), but it's more than ok for gaming and decent mic with excellent removable mic arm is included. Design is based on actual pilot headset, only fluorescent green cable spoil the appearance (I know it's Razer trademark, but it just look tacky on aviation headset.)

llama, you should consider getting an SSD for system drive. 120GB is enough for the OS and you already have dedicated SSD for DCS. Of all the improvements, this one is the most obvious. Highly recommended.
