  1. Com'on now guys, scratches give it a battle hardened look. Be proud;)
  2. Hi guys, I'm trying to teach myself Point to Point Navigation in F-5 and having a bit of a problem. Or perhaps just a question... I've created a custom mission with some navigation points, screenshot below. But basically: 1) take off from Kobuleti, TACAN - 67X 2) WP1: Kutaisi airport - 56 degree radial, 32 miles 3) WP2: Senaki-Kolkhi airport - 18 degree radial, 21 miles 4) etc (left out to keep things brief) I'm using this link to teach myself how to fly: http://code7700.com/1979_fix-to-fix.htm WP1 is straight forward, it's pretty much a straight line from take-off to the waypoint. For WP2, after drawing a line between current radial and the one I'll be going, if I turn the 'card' counter clockwise (just as shown in the link above) until the line that connects two radials is vertical, my new course is incorrect - I'll be heading in the wrong directions: - current radial: 56 - upcoming radial: 18 - desired heading after turning 'circle' counter clockwise is around 95 degrees or so. But 95 degrees is an opposite direction from where I need to be heading. It looks like I need to be turning 'card' clockwise instead, which gives me a heading of 275. To me it looks like difference between the example in the link above and my mission is that author goes from 270 to 305 radial (ie higher radial), where I'm going from 56 to 18 radial (lower radial). Am I correct in assuming that any time I go to a lower radial I will need to be turning 'the card' clockwise and when to a higher radial 'the card' goes counterclockwise? Thanks!
  3. Not sure if this is still relevant, but: - Normandy map. If you purchase it, you will be able to fly in/against all currently controllable WW2 aircraft (P-51, BF109, FW-190) - Normany Asset pack ads AI controlled airplanes such as B-17 (there is a full list of planned airplanes somewhere). If you do not have this pack, you won't be able to fly against these planes or join servers where these units are used. Cheers!
  4. What microphone do you use and how far is it away from you? Also, how proficient are you in the language you speak to into Voice Attack.
  5. Glad it worked out for you! Enjoy the grip. Also, pitch in on your thoughts on thumb button/hat - I'd like to know if others are missing it or not.
  6. Take the picture of how it looks on your end and check the pins.
  7. When you say 'seat properly' what do you mean? As I mentioned, it won't 'happily' screw in - the original and extensions I have, all easily go and slide on top of the base until they are tight - here, you'll need to apply some force/pressure every turn and keep at it until it's all the way in. Perhaps Cyph3r can pitch in?
  8. Strange, the plug/wiring on my can go inside of the stick (ie there is some slack, connector is not physically attached to the grip). I'll try to make a picture when I get home later on. I much prefer Warthog in the middle than to the side - I think base is just too stiff for side positioning (but that's just my take on it).
  9. You need to make sure you screw it in all the way. It will feel loose until almost the very end and then tighten up. You can lubricate it as suggested above (not sure if I would use Vaseline for that though, perhaps something out of Home Depot), but would still need to make sure you are tightening it to the very end. P.S. Have you tried Warthog with any extensions before at all? I find that even small extension tremendously increases accuracy.
  10. Ergonomics wise, it is easy to reach for and flip in either up or down position. It's 'clickable' only in it's lowered position though - kind of perfect for a safety switch and that's what I'm using it for in the Bf109 and Mig-15 (possibly could have been better with an auto click when lowered, but I also see how it would have been limiting if used for anything else other than safety). Perhaps a missile launch button, but I'm used to having it on the front of the stick...
  11. This is how it works in 1.5 stable and 2.0 - I always assumed that this is how it was done in F-5...
  12. At the moment I'm mostly flying Mig-15 and F-5 - fairly unsophisticated planes, so I did not not change much (on F-5, I moved DM and DG modes to the two way switch on the side and left Dogfight/Resume button under the thumb). P.S. VirPil does not have 2 axis on the hats; you must be thinking of the VKB grip.
  13. I've received my T-50 grip earlier today and had a couple of hours to play with it now, so here are my initial impressions: - T-50 grip is an all plastic construction and is only around 1/3 weight of the WH grip. - Lighter weight and slightly longer length of the grip translate in a slightly different axis travel feel when connected to the WH base. Not a by a lot, but I do feel that it is a bit different. The best way to describe it is to compare stock WH grip vs WH grip with a small extension; I think you gain a bit more precision. That said, difference is very small. - Palm rest is a nice feature. You can really make grip fit your hand. That said, I wish VirPil included a lock of some sorts on the height adjustment wheel. As it is, rest feels flimsy and easy to put out of adjustment. - Buttons. Night and day difference. VirPil is using OMRON switches - less resistance, travel and supposedly longer life. I much prefer these buttons over what Warthog has. - Brake lever is actually an axis, but on WH it acts as a button. Very nice feature for all Russian planes fans. Lever is spring loaded and I think travel is a bit too long for a button and will need some time getting used to. - Thumb button. For a long time TM user, it just doesn't feel right not to have my hat switch there. I'm sure I will get used to it, however I cannot help but to think of reasons why VirPil would put button there instead of a 5-way switch ala TM. It's such a comfortable position for a switch... - WH connector is TIGHT. At first I thought that I did not align it properly, then I thought I would surely damage the threads. But in the end it all worked just fine. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase. I would suggest VirPil take another look at the palm rest to make it feel more solid and perhaps consider releasing v2 grip with a thumb hat. Is it worth $163 plus shipping? Assuming T-50 base is solid, I definitely would recommend buying the whole joystick. As far as stand alone grip, if you have money to spend and want to customize your Warthog, sure - it is a high quality product and you will not be disappointed. If buttons on your WH grip bite the dust, definitely - last year I paid around $40 for thumb hat alone from the TM, so $160 for the full grip is not bad at all. P.S. I used EMS shipping as I thought price was very reasonable and got the grip within 12 days of it being shipped. Majority of that was spent in customs, so with a bit more luck I think people here in US can get their hands on one within a week of shipping.
  14. Thanks! I guess, I'll save the track next time and report.
  15. You can preview the book in Amazon, I don't think it will much of what you are looking for as was not written by Sutiagin himself (he died in 1986 and did not write any books). "The Last War of the Superfortresses: MiG-15 vs B-29 over Korea" - I've read the original Russian version of the book and it's rather good. Authors actually published another book in Russian covering Mig-15 vs F-86, but sadly I can't find it in English (given that above book was only published in English last year, perhaps this one will be coming out soon though). Both books are analyses of the air war in Korea and are a must read if you want to know/learn the war from the other side. Detailed (almost day by day if I'm not mistaken) reports of Soviet Mig's in action, but both have a few personal account thrown in here and there.
  16. In addition to the above, Mig-15 should have a somewhat better sustained turn, but a worse roll rate compared to F86. Mig15 is a really nice, simply plane to fly - I enjoy a lot. Can't say how it stacks up to F86 in DCS though - I finally bought the F86 module last week, but yet to fly it (one of these days).
  17. So my pinky switch just went south too - still works on forward click, but back click is gone. Is Digikey link still the way to go for the replacement? Anyone has a disassembly tutorial on this one? Thanks!
  18. Thanks! So just to confirm, it does not 'reset' itself after re-acquiring the signal - one needs to switch the TACAN off and turn it back on?
  19. Mine is in US Customs now, I should have it on hand within couple of days and will post a write up.
  20. OK, so I know I'm not nuts... I've just created a quick mission in Mission Editor and flew from/to the same airfield as in training, TACAN worked as expected. Also tried running the full training mission not in VR and it worked. Tried it in VR and sure thing, same TACAN problem... Strange. P.S. Quick TACAN question - when I flew Quick Mission I created, I noticed range to the station got stuck soon after take off. I had to turn off TACAN and turn it back on. Is this normal?
  21. TACAN station is around 30miles or so in front with range decreasing when I dial in the course.
  22. Sorry, not sure what you mean... I'm already flying heading 116 towards TACAN station (range decreasing) when I dial in CRS 116. My thinking process - I'm already flying the right direction, all I need to do is to fine tune my positioning so as to overfly TACAN station; I should not be making any drastic heading changes... This is also confirmed by Nav tutorial text and pictures, it looks like I should be within 10-20 degrees of the correct heading when I dial in the course...
  23. Ok, it's morning and I had some to think this over... Still confused... Straight from F5 Navigation training mission - before takeoff I enter landing airfield's TACAN frequency and it shows approximately 120 degrees. I then set desired heading to 116 as per instructions, take off, climb and turn to heading 116. Everything is fine as of this moment, I'm flying towards the the desired airfield... At 6000 feet I use CRS dial on TACAN to dial 116 course and this is where things start to break down... Bearing pointer still shows to 116, but I'm off the course and need to turn left to realign; however Course Arrow now swings almost 180 degrees. How is this possible and what did I do wrong?
  24. Hello, I've bought F5 module last weekend and having a bit of a hard time getting myself comfortable with TACAN navigation. Is there a manual or a detailed write up on it somewhere? I understand how to set select and navigate towards TACAN station, but having hard time getting grips on CRS and how to use it to setup for landing. P.S. I did try the Nav tutorial for F5, but between text getting cut off in VR and me missing something, I end up with Bearing Pointer and Course Arrow pointing in almost opposite (ie close to 180 degrees) directions and my brain just ties into a knot and gives up. Thanks!
  25. lol I think there must be quiet a few 'the base sitters' here. I could never get comfortable with Warthog on a side - not sure if it's a height or spring loading or a combination of these two.
