How to detect and counter an incoming IR SAM?
NhiTrac replied to Hoggorm's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Talking from zero experience obviously, but in books and other materials they talk about jinxing in different directions after an attack run etc while pumping out flares/chaff as opposed to just flying away straight and level. That's what I meant. -
How to detect and counter an incoming IR SAM?

Question: In RL pilots fly in such a way to make them harder to be targeted/hit. Is this simulated in DCS? E.g would AI ground units have less of a chance to hit me with AA/missiles if I flew unpredictably? -
Nothing from stopping you powering it down to let it cool :D

Does anyone else feel like using wingman is cheating?
NhiTrac replied to nickexists's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
Do you guys try to fly using RL tactics? Eg do you "provide cover" when you order your wingy to attack? I find most of the time they'll get themselves shot down even when working with JTAC... That or I haven't scouted the area properly. Btw, why is it that they fly off into the far distance when I tell them to attack my SPI? Sometimes they'll even "RTB". I'll then have to tell them to rejoin and then attack, and it works! Bug or am I doing something wrong? Last question: when you give them an attack heading eg default, north, east etc, is that the compass bearing relative to the target as per the TPG? -
That 'ding' engage sound. Is that what it's like in RL? Sounds like they took a sound file straight from windows 95!

Guys go add some curve to the X/Y axis. Night and day difference for me (TMWH) and I pretty much connected and refuelled immediately after. Prior to that I was dancing all over the sky. You can also do the same for the throttle for fine adjustments but I didn't like it and have mine on stock. The other thing to do is to just ignore the boom and focus on the tanker in relation to a point on your HUD and just aim to keep it there.

Related question, when you first contact JTAC and advise him that you're a flight of two and the combined payload, does JTAC assign you targets based on your own A-10 or the combined? How would your order your wingman to attack? After the 9-line and you have visual on target or just order the attack without JTAC?

Check out http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=108774 which your question is covered. In short if you follow the 'normal' startup procedure correctly you shouldn't have to wait for the alignment to finish.

Check out the thread I started ages ago re similar question. The answers should have some useful information for you... http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=102563

I see you fly with a TMWH. See the trim hat on top of the stick? Remap that to trim instead of pan view and get used to mashing it every so often for a near level flight. Ps with my usual loadout, once I'm airborne I usually trim left about 6 clicks and up about the same until my airspeed increases, then I'll trim down to fly level. As soon as you release a weapon (unbalance your plane) however, be ready to trim left/right again. And check out the other thread about flying level. Same question you have...
-
Reason being is because your plane has no trim on start up. The stick is dead centre and because of slight uneven weight distribution, you'll drift to whichever side is heavier. To correct it, just trim opposite a few clicks once you're up and level. Like others have said it'll become second nature once you have more flight time. Ps try this experiment. Manually load your weapons just on the left wing with the right empty. You 'should' drift to the left once airborne. Hope that helps.

Try adding a curve of around 20 to your stick's X, Y axis in the settings. I found this helped tremendously for me as it made it less twitchy though I am flying on the TMWH. The other thing to do is to focus on the tanker's wings/body in relation to a point on your canopy rather than chasing the boom. Re trimming on the TMWH, works a treat!

Porky, the main point in which I want to clarify is that you stated your method of start up gets you taxing in less than five mins, then you do the full alignment in the air or while you're taxing (correct me if I've read it wrong)... What we're saying is, the full start up including FULL ALIGNMENT also takes five minutes. As such, your method is in fact longer as you're still completing the alignment process.
-
I don't recall having to physically move the aircraft as part of the alignment process... And I've never done it either. Simy go through all the tests and sequence, wait for the magical 4.0.0.8 number to appear on the CDU and flick the EGI/EAC Switch and you're done. I could be wrong but it's never failed me.
-
If done correctly you don't need to move the A10 forward. I'd say you've missed a step somewhere so perhaps check over the procedures.
-
Yup that's what I have to do.
-
Regardless of position I find that the flaps and throttles doesn't register whatever physical position it's in when I ramp start. Have to move it up then back down to "off" and only then can I advance the throttle forward in-game. Not sure if its me or a bug. All other switches like APU and stuff works fine.
-
Unsure about the mouse but re pause, you mean to unpause and start the mission once its loaded? If so just remap the pause function to a different key.
-
So it's not just me? My wingman does the below quite often and I've not been able to figure out if its me or just bad AI: 1) randomly declare "RTB" after i give an order to attack with full fuel and weapons. Will rejoin if asked and sometimes attack afterwards, too. 2) give an "attack at my SPI" order and he'll acknowledge but fly off to whoop whoop...
-
Thanks for that. What's the purpose of these?
-
Off topic and silly question, but what are the two stings on the side of the put that ties to the cockpit railings???
-
Truth be told I didn't do it myself bit used a profile I downloaded. I'm not home now but go to ED's website on the download section and search for the profile. It's one of the most downloaded files there. I found the overall mapping of the other functions pretty good too. If you can't find it ill check later when I'm home.

Yea definitely. In that case there's a few options: A) set the slider on the throttle for air brakes with the middle band being no key binds, and the opposite bands to extend and retract. Worked for me when I had a 52 pro. If I kept the slider at either end it'll fully open/close. Just gotta remember to move the slider back to the middle or it'll screw your other functions. B) use the SST software to program a macro for one of your buttons/toggles to hold the retract key. Either of the above should get you what you want.
-
I guess this is where a good hotas will come into play, amongst other benefits (assuming you have a basic stick). In the real A-10 one has to hold the toggle to extend the brakes. However retracting the brakes can be done in one go as you can 'lock' the retract toggle in its forward position.

Agree with this and it's one reason why I'm really enjoying the A-10. Fly near the target area and orbit whilst setting up the attack run. Something about loitering around at 200 knots and taking my time to get ready really appeals to me.
