[BORESIGHT FIRST] Can't get Mav seeker to Align with TPOD
Donglr replied to jonsky7's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
I am confused. Boresighting is the process of aligning the TGP line of sight with the Mav line of sight. If you don't have a TGP you obviously cannot align anything to it. -

It can. Make sure MAV is in PRE mode, not VIS or BORE. -
How do you land the viper without running out of runway
Donglr replied to ruddy122's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
"Notice the anti-skid hard at work"...I am confused, is it implemented or not? Looks like it in this video but several people say otherwise and and I can cause brake marks all day long with my baby. -
How do you land the viper without running out of runway

I just gave this a try with: 3 full bags and full internal fuel, 2x120C, 2xAIM9, 4xAGM-65, TGP, wind 0 knts It took me 1.5nm (dunno what that is in ft) to come to a stop. And that was not optimized for shortest distance possible, actually quite gentle on the brakes because the F16 likes to be all over the place and I have to keep it somewhat in the center of the runway by modulating the wheel brakes. -
Who will win the race between the Mi-24 and the OH-58?
Donglr replied to Razorback's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
"The Mi-24P and Mi-24V have four underwing pylons for up to 12 anti-tank missiles." https://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/hind/ Which is weird in its own way, as 12 missiles over four pylons makes 3 missiles/pylon And also contrary to "9M114 Shturm (NATO: AT-6 Spiral) anti-tank missile, 2 missiles on each wingtip or outer hardpoint." I got the Ka50 as it came out and the BS2 upgrade in 2012. Finally, my first helo and the reason I picked up "Lock On: Modern Air Combat" years ago in the first place. and it should have been everything I dreamed of. Except it was not. Never felt at home with its Russian style of doing things, it never felt "complete" or thought thru, I could not see a concept. The helo itself that is, not the implementation by ED (which I consider alright). I still flew it for an extended amount of time since it was the only modern combat helo available on the market. I got the Huey and the Mi8 in 2013, they promised to be something different from the Ka50 and I guess I was secretly hoping they could fill the void in my heart the Ka50 was unable to fill. The Huey was alright and is a handy tool for some quicky, no-nonsense logistics runs I like to do on multiplayer PvE servers. The Mi8 is a bit more elaborate, nicely made module but not as efficient when you just want to get things done. I actually flew it for some time in my squadron because it is simulated so nicely. But in the end both are what they are: Transport helicopters with limited weapons capabilities and the capabilities they have never added anything to a battlefield the A10 or other jets couldn't do in a better way. So they are left in their transport/logistics niche which, at the end of the day, makes no impact given the way DCS is played on most servers. I then got the Gazelle in 2017, again a different take on helos in DCS. Small, nimble, some modern avionics but nothing fancy, some guided weapons. It certainly has its deficits (not only the FM) but so far it comes closest to the way I would like to fly helos in DCS: a game of hide and seek, peek, reposition, peek again, fire, disappear. It is so nimble it gives me the feeling to be able to do this. But it is very limited in its firepower and weapons range. Again, an A10 could just do it better. Now comes the Hind, a bird that does not do anything better than what I already have in my stable. It has a meager 4 guided missiles, a fixed gun and is heavy as fu**. The Ka50, even though it is lacking so much IMO, is far superior for combat operations. And if I want to do transport I have the Mi8, which is basically the same thing and will fly similarly. Hell, I can even fit unguided rockets and gun pods and I basically have a diet-Hind. So no, I don't see how the Hind does anything for me. I just want a decent, modern attack helo, some (8+) guided weapons with range (hello Hellfire, not the sorry four HOTs of the Gazelle with 4km range), with good optics incl FLIR (not the sorry Shkval of the Ka50) and some reasonable defensive systems (hello Gazelle RWR, hello laser detector of the Ka50). But sadly the shop keeper keeps saying: sorry, no have. -

I actually only picked-up "Lock On" because I was looking for a helo sim but there was none around, so fixed-wing had to fill the gap. Ever since I have been waiting for a good, modern attack helo, i.e. the Apache but even 10+ years later nothing even at the horizon, only old junk, niche helos or other things I do not want to fly. The Hind for me falls to the category of "old junk" I have no interest in flying. I will wait to the Kiowa and some reviews on the FM and decide if that is something to fill the void but just looking at it makes me sigh - it looks like a duck's beak with a hump. Do I really want to fly that? 10+ years of DCS and still no helo which makes me feel adequately equipped for modern combat operation. I am not even asking for being combat effective compared to all the fast movers, I gave up on that long time ago. So far I have all the helos in DCS, but the Hind is the first one I will not buy. -
How do you land the viper without running out of runway
Donglr replied to ruddy122's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
Well I guess it takes a bit of everything: 1) come in at good speed, i.e. actually fly the AoA bracket 2) fly with airbrake deployed. The F16 is landed with airbrake. 3) Use aerobraking, i.e. keep the nose up even when already with wheels on the ground to increase air resistance 4) apply wheelbrakes when all wheel are in the ground. In my experience it is better to apply ~80%, if you go full brakes wheels will lock and you will swerve. Locked wheels will leave skid marks on the runway 5) pull back stick to create "poor-man's" airbrake with your elevators All of this together gets me stopped basically everywhere -
Tried it today again, does not work. Multiplayer on a Hoggit server, havn't tried in singleplayer.

Slight mistake in your post there, I corrected that for you You will experience that quite frequently trying to handle that baby. But all kidding aside, even though I am of that kind that would call the Mi-8 "old Russian junk", it is actually a very well made module which feels "real" and alive and all those Russian quirks and switches give it character and soul. Sounds stupid, but when I fly it I feel like a different person compared to the American gear. I think you made an excellent choice there when it comes to preparation for the Hind, I am sure you will find several similarities between the two, in terms of cockpit, philosophy and flight model. Wow, even writing this post makes me want to fire-up that baby, haven't done that in years, because I currently am in my fixed-wing episode. I'm off to the pit .

I feel your pain, bro! I admit I have the worst VR headset, using a CV1 and assume it is easier with newer headsets. I can see the elevation indicator alright, but front-aft indicator is impossible to read, because the white lines between the light wash out against the actual light. What I did was record a track of me refuelling and watch it from the outside. When I was in a position where the boom was in the green region and the tanker lights were perfect I jumped back to cockpit view and tried to memorize what it looks like. E.g. the outer engines are right at the edges of my field of view. I then try to reproduce this picture on my next attempts. I realized that I usually was to far in front. It is doable. I actually have more trouble with my controls, the Warthog stick is feels super heavy, too heavy to make precise, minute adjustments.

[BORESIGHT FIRST] Can't get Mav seeker to Align with TPOD
Donglr replied to jonsky7's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
You have to cancel snow plow by pressing SP again. You need to get into SP mode so the TGP starts to look in front tinstead of to the current steerpoint. But while in SP mode you cannot slew. Basically you only activate SP briefly to force the TGP to look ahead, because it has no such thing as a "boresight" position. When you want to boresight MAVs on the ground make sure you are in PRE mode, you cannot slew it when in VIS. If you want to slew it with a weapon other than MAV active be sure you are in CCRP mode, cannot slew in CCIP. -

Kind of works as I described above: select your GBUs, use CCRP mode, set TGP to snow plow, set HUD as SOI, use TDC to slew target box in in HUD, cancel snow plow mode in TGP Now you should be able to slew the TDC in the HUD or the TGP and they should follow one another -
[BORESIGHT FIRST] Can't get Mav seeker to Align with TPOD
Donglr replied to jonsky7's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
In my experience there is no consistent way and if it works it is a bit tedious. First, I think there is no such thing as a TGP HUD indicator, there is only a targeting box, i.e. your target, which does not necessarily correspond to what your TGP is looking at.Also the ability to slew the target designator box or TGP heavily depends on what weapon you have selected and what mode you are in. It's really not like the A10 in that regard where there is always a SPI which you can move around with the TGP, no matter mode/weapon. I sometimes manage to create a situation where I have the target box on the HUD and am able to slew it with my TGP without creating a waypoint first. I go into CCRP mode which will automatically slew the TGP to the currently selected steerpoint. That is not what I want so I put the TGP into SP mode. When it is facing forward I take it out of SP mode (cannot quite remember if it is done by unchecking SP again or putting it into area track by TMS right). I then SOMETIMES end up with a designator box on by HUD which I then can slew with the TGP. However, I just tried this twice and it worked once, so I am not entirely sure what was happening there. Long story shirt, thr F16 feels clunky in that regard, esp knowing the A10. The most reliable method I know is using a MAV in VIS mode, then you make HUD SOI, slew it till your heart's content and the TGP will follow. But that is with a MAV only. -

1) no. Boresighting basically means "point at the same thing". There does not need to be a handover. Although I do not really understand what "handover" actually means other than "Jo, Mav, look over there and try to lock whatever you see and tell me if you found something", tbh 2/3) Yes, I TMS and yes, you need some contrast. Without contrast you cannot lock the Mav seeker to anything. So my goal is to find something that the Mav as well as the TGP can lock onto so I get collapsed cross with the Mav as well as a POINT track in the TGP 4)dunno, I honestly pay zero attention to all this lettering, because in my in-combat experience all this Mav busieness works really unreliably, thanks to the SPI bug and range restrictions. Also I play in stone-age VR so I cannot read the letters anyway. For me a much more useful way of telling if I am good to fire is checking if the cross is collapsed. 5) I experience the same thing, especially when I try to lock a Mav from my second station onto my boresighting target after I finished the first station. I hope it is a bug. What usually helps is moving the TGP off the target, move it back on and TMS up again. Then I can slew the Mav again 6) In MAN mode you need to switch SOI to WPN and TMS up. In AUTO mode you do need not to. But again, in my experience I quite often need to switch to WPN page and need to TMS up manually, because the initial lock did not work and I ended up with the "no cross whatsoever"-screen. Sometimes you are too far away and it cannot lock, sometimes TGP and MAV are not aligned well enough so the MAV does not find anything to lock onto and sometime thanks to the SPI bug target box, TGP and MAV just have nothing to do with each other and you are just a useless multi-million $ pile of aluminum in the sky. -
IMO the the answer to your question lies in your feelings towards either of the planes. Might sound a bit metaphysical but let me tell you about my experience. Before the F18 came out I was hyped, finally a modern jet that can do everything. I even bought a small plastic kit model to bridge the gap till release. But when I got my hands on it I was disappointed. I hate the HOTAS integration and several aspects of how you operate the avionics, and the FCS makes it feel dead when flying. On the other hand I never had any feelings towards the F16. Then I got it, because it was on sale and I was disappointed by the F18. And that little bird just gives me more. I can "feel" it better when it flies. It is harder to fly, my first taxi,take-off,landing was like "oh sh**t, this is a hand full!", but using it feels more rewarding to me. She is not an easy bride and certainly makes life harder than it needs to be, compared to the F18. But she made me like her imperfections, something the F18 never managed. And that is even though the strong points of the F16 has, like good A2A performance, are completely wasted on me, because I am an A2G guy. Objectively I should use the F18, because it has to offer a lot more in that department currently (although the F16 will catch up as development continues) and the F16 is so small that it feels completely overloaded when equipped with some decent ordinance. But again, I like her imperfections and how she feels, the sound of her engine and its quick reaction... . So to summarize: My advice is not to go by facts or state of development, but to pick the one you feel more connected to.

I have the pitch autopilot mapped to my Warthog autopilot 3-way switch. This works flawlessly on the ground (where it is entirely useless to play with an autopilot) but when I am in the air this does not work anymore. When I switch of ATT or ALT mode, returning my Warthog to center does not return the in-game switch to center. Instead I have to move my Warthog to the opposite side to get the in-game switch to return to center. This is stupid, but what is even more stupid is that it works on the ground all right. Bug? Feature?

Also so ne Gruppe würde mich ja auch interessieren.

When I wrote my post I was of course trying to deduce the correct switch name from its shape. But I eventually came to the conclusion, that mankind in its time has created a plethora of different boat shapes and none of the Chinese people I know wears a hat, so none of the names is a unique identifier IMO. That's why I will just stick with "gray toggle switch" and "red momentary switch". ;)
-
The way I understand is that the non-special versions of the command are used for momentary button presses and the special ones are for swicthes that maintain their position. For example I have the DOGFGT/CENTER special on my BOAT/CHINA (I always get confused which one is which, the gray one that sets TV/WHOT/BHOT in the A10) of my Warthog throttle. That switch maintains position and hence also keeps sending the "pressed" command as long as it remains in that position. Regular switches only send the command the very moment they are pressed. So using the CENTER special version of an assignment tells DCS "stay in this setting as long as the button is pressed, only go back to center once the button is released" (useful for permanent swicthes), while the non-special version means "go to that setting on the initial press and stay in that setting even when the button is released, only leave that setting if the button is pressed again". At least that is my understanding, I always use the "special" version because my Warthog is full of permanent switches and I am always happe if I finde some useful binds.
-
I honstly have some trouble understanding your problem, esp what you mean by "stacked" and you cannot slew a GBU 12 (or any GBU for that matter), you can only slew the TGP, FCR and the MAV (when the appropriate MFD is SOI). Maybe you are referring to the fact that sometimes the TGP cursor seems stuck. What you can try then is TMS right, the bigger cross should change into a smaller, standard AREA TRACK cross and then you are able to slew again.

I was trying the MAVs tonight and when using them the HUD shows bearing and range to the target point in the lower right corner. However, I found that the bearing is always a few degress off compared to what the heading tape says (when I fly towards the target, that is of course). Is that some wonky flying on my side or is this a bug? Or maybe difference between true and magnetic heading?

Thank you Breakneck. I was aware of this possibility but I was curious if there is a more convenient way that does not require hands-off-stick. Doesn't look like it, at least until we get an update to the HMD

[BORESIGHT FIRST] Can't get Mav seeker to Align with TPOD
Donglr replied to jonsky7's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
I am really struggling with the MAVs while trying this boresighting stuff tonight. Although I eventually got it to work but the results seem inconsistent. Sometimes it is bang on, sometimes the alignment is off and this is although another missile from THE SAME rail was ok. But that is not all. The MAV in general I find inconsistent in its behavior. I uploaded a track file, maybe someone can have a look. I had the following two issues: 1. Cannot always slew the MAV manually In PRE mode the MAV always tries to follow the TGP, esp when you TMS up in the TGP it tries to handover coordinates to the MAV. If alignment is not good you have to with to the WPN page and adjust manually before trying to lock (I used MAN mode). At 424 seconds into the replay you can see me how I had to slew the MAV a bit to get it on target. No problem. But at 464-~470s I try the same thing with a different target, but this time I am unable to slew the MAV. You can only see the image shake a bit due to my failed slew attempts. Why can I not slew the MAV at this point? 2. cannot change targeting mode to BORE or VIS Between 589-615 seconds you can see various attempts to change the targeting mode. I tried the ENABLE button while WPN page or HUD are SOI, you can also see me directly pushing the PRE button on the WPN page. But I never manage to get out of PRE mode. Why is that? I don't really remember if I had a target locked at the time. Do I maybe have to TMS down to undesignate before I can change mode? MavBoresight.trk
