quick tip: IF your HMCS is on and you want to temporarily disable it you do not need to turn it off via the dial, instead you can use DMS down long to enable/disable it. Way faster and you can keeps your hands on your HOTAS.

This is always a good skill to have. And because the F16 has so little fuel this is the reason she is the first aircraft I ever went thru the pain of learning to air refuel. She is actually not that thirsty. When I fly with my F18 buddies I have less than half of their fuel flow - but they can carry more.

This is quite a nice video for a helo nerd. I am not really hyped for the Hind and it will probably the first DCS helo I will NOT get, but it was still fun to see, esp the similarities with the Mi8. The "moving map" is legend And what he says about the task of the pilot is rather managing the systems which are thrown together from other places: that is exactly how I feel flying the Mi8

Everyone flying the Gazelle and struggling as you are should try what is reccomended here starting 7:49. Luckily this will change in 2021 with the Hind, Kiowa and (maybe already) Apache
-
don't we currently have "free to play" period? Just try it would be my advice. I fly the Gazelle quite a lot but I cannot give you a definite recomendation. First, everybody is looking for something different in different modules, so what I like says nothing about you might like it. Secondly, the flight model is controversial and for some (not including me) this is a no go. SO again, see for yourself if you like what you find. I like it because it is super light and agile, it has enough of the "modern stuff" like control helpers/auto pilots, NAV system and RWR so I feel I can do useful things in multiplayer like BlueFlag. I like that it feels like a sports car with rotor blades.

How do you land the viper without running out of runway
Donglr replied to ruddy122's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
Nooo, my life is ruined! When I did my very first steps in flight simming 15 years ago I had to get used to the concept of using "stick for speed" and "throttle for sinkrate" and now you tell me I have to re-learn this all over again? Geetz, it's time for the Ah64 to FINALLY release so I can leave all this fixed wing nonsense and enjoy the scenery from down low. Some really nice info in that post, tbh. Thanks. -
After the latest patch (Open Beta 2.5.6.59398) the coordinates of the cursor do not match object location. This might be related to the ruler issue (https://forums.eagle.ru/topic/256047-f10-ruler-broken-in-vr/?tab=comments#comment-4515944) and vice versa, as the ruler displays too far to the left compared to the mouse cursor, which matches nicely with my observations and the fact that offset depends on zoom level. This is only true for VR, coordinates work ok in 2D. In the screenshot you can see that cursor coordinates (top left) do not match aircraft coordinates (bottom left).

First I though I was stupid. Twice actually, because I initially experienced this problem on a multiplayer server. Then I re-did this dedicated test and got a similar problem. So inputting the wrong coordinates twice would be kind of embarrassing. However, the fault seems to lie deeper. Firstly, I did not forget to use DDMM.MM format. I do not know if this is because the replay did not for for you correctly, but my F10 is set to the decimal minutes format. I fly the Gazelle every day recently and input coordinates every flight. It worked fine until the latest patch. If you see me reading DDMMSS then this is a replay issue. Secondly, you are correct, I typed in the wrong easting, 44 instead of 47. However, there is something else wrong as well which I discovered when trying again. Check this screenshot. My cursor is on my plane, in the top left it shows am 45 minute easting, in the bottom left however it shows a 47 minute easting for my current position. So I think even though mistyping the coordinates in my initial replay, I am not a complete fool, something in fishy. And I had a suspicion.... So I flew this another time, this time in 2D. Usually I am a VR pilot. And voila (no, I am not French), this time it worked and the coordinates in the F10 view actually match. Check the second screenshot. This does not seem to be the only VR issue with the F10 map, as you can see in the 3rd shot, the measurement line, while still dragging it, does not end and the mouse cursor. This also only appeared with the latest OB update. I tried it with the Huey: same issue, easting is off by ~2 minutes, but only in VR. I guess I will have to move my complaint to the general DCS bug forum.. But thank you for having a look into that issue. This way we discovered something wrong.

Who will win the race between the Mi-24 and the OH-58?
Donglr replied to Razorback's topic in DCS: Mi-24P Hind
We have a hand full of videos with the PC guys and their affiliates flying the Kiowa, so taking availability of videos seems like a poor choice the base assumptions on. I watched Casmo's update and chat with Sven from PC yesterday and they said they are tuning the flight model and the module has to go thru Bell for final approval and he made a very strong point on not giving a release date, because there simply are steps involved which are simply out of your hands. -
This question is not answered easily. I would decide against the Ka50 and the Gazelle, both because of the way they fly. The Ka50 with its dual-rotor is not "normal" in a sense, so it does not really teach you anything on how helicopters work, how all your three control inputs have to work in unison, even if you only want to change a single flight parameter. Also the autopilots of the Ka50 are very confusing for beginners and often times it feels like you are fighting them. The Gazelle has a debatable flight model. I will not go into details, but it is an odd mix of stability and agility. Don't get me wrong, I fly this thing all the time, because it is super agile and I am having a blast, but I would not consider this a good "helicopter learning" module. Esp because of its agility it is nothing like the Ah64 will be. That leaves Mi8 and Uh1. The Mi8 is a lovely made module and feels authentic, esp the flight model. However it is harder to fly than the Uh1. It is less forgiving, you will find yourself in a VRS elevator rushing for earth's core more often than not and its cockpit layout is, well, very Russian. A bit difficult to identify a concept among all those switches. That being said to me the Mi8 like no other helo creates a feeling of having a soul and a personality. And that in part comes from its age and cockpit design and flight model. The Uh1 is what I would recomend to you. It is a bare bones helo without any electronic aides so you will discover how a helo really flies. It will make you feel incompetent in the beginning when you do your baby steps but she will not make it unnecessarily hard for you, it's not easy to get her into VRS or break with a hard landing. It's plains chopper with minimal functionality, when you want to fire weapons it is done in a simple manner, unlike with the Mi8 which has a gazillion switches in different places to set what kind of weapon on what pod you want to fire. In the Uh1 you can focus in flying and that is a challenge for an extended period. Luckily it's "free-to-play" time, so you can have a look at any of the helos if you find the time over Christmas and make your own opinions on what to buy eventually. And maybe you like the Mi8 better than the Uh1 or even wait for the Hind to basically fly a more combat oriented brother of the Mi8. Maybe you would like to get a more modern take on an American helo and prepare for those scout/killer OPs and get the Kiowa when it's out so see first hand how your future battle field buddy operates.

NADIR coordinates wrong Open Beta 2.5.6.59398 I enter the coordinates of the famous old cross-shaped runway between Kobuleti and Batumi frequently used for firing practice into the NADIR and try to follow the arrow in he HSI. However it does not lead me to the correct location. When I am at the correct location the Nav system tells me I am 4km away from my waypoint. Gazelle was a hot start, track attached. well, in the helo realm this looks quite even, Ka50, Mi24, Mi8 vs Ah64, Gazelle, Kiowa, Huey So now all we have to do is set full clouds from 1000ft to space and all your beloved fixed wings will be useless for A2G Helos will rule earth

Your statement contradicts this gentleman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkH-VqFbcrc at 8:06. So who to believe now? True, the gunner has his extra middle display for targeting, so the cockpits are not identical, but according to this source both stations can do both. It has a radar warning system as well as an IR jammer called a "disco light". If you are thinking chaffs and flares: I don't know.

Of course I am no ED employee but let me give you my guess on the current state of development: Negotiations with Boeing progressed far enough to be able to be confident a DCS AH-64D is viable. Research on available technical information has been made and probably maybe even support by Boeing has been agreed upon. All of this is part of development, but often overlooked. And of what people usually consider development: 3D modelling: 1% (the current AI model available in game, as a basis for some proper, detailed modelling) systems: 0% flight model: 30% (some knowledge and good flight models available from other modules (looking at you, Mi8) that need re-parametrization to fit the Ah64) Come on guys, it's a teaser and wonderful news for me as a rotor head. But I expect 2+ years to go by before there is anything in EA. And that is ok. This is no WWII bird with next to no systems and all data available openly. This thing is f**in' complex.

YEEEEESSSSS!!!! I saw that gun and I knew immediately what it stood for! Finally!! got Lock On: Modern Air Combat back in the day, because I was looking for a helo sim, like a Jane's Longbow 2 reincarnation but could not find any. LOMAC seemed the only reasonable Mil sim, so I stuck with it. When the Ka50 came out I played it, but never got the hang of it, guess it is too Russian for me. So I kept playing the fixed wings and helos but none of them could really fill the void in my helo heart. All I wanted ever since that time 15 years ago was a modern combat helo and the Apache obviously was high up my list. Finally it will come (only two more weeks , well, make that years)

[CAN NOT REPRODUCE] Maverick and TGP Issues
Donglr replied to Mirage2425's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
I have noticed that as well. I think changing weapons or master mode helps. -
AGM65D only able to lock military targets?
Donglr replied to Rhinozherous's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
No, I locked it onto a runway light once. Most frequently I use the airport vehicles like the radar or runway illumination cars at the end of the runway or the fire engines/fuel trucks. All of those could count as military vehicles I guess. -
[BORESIGHT FIRST] Can't get Mav seeker to Align with TPOD
Donglr replied to jonsky7's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
That is exactly what I did but to no effect. After releasing target and re-locking HUD and Mav are still un-aligned. -
[BORESIGHT FIRST] Can't get Mav seeker to Align with TPOD
Donglr replied to jonsky7's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
Well, I just tried it and I can confirm that HUD and MAV are not aligned. I also could not manage to boresight them, pressing the BRSGHT button does nothing. Also when you move the HUD it moves the MAV, but when you move the MAV the HUD does not move. Don't know if this is as it's supposed to be, but anyways, I am not aware that there is anything you can do about it in the current state of development. -
I never had problems with the CBU97. At least it always deployed its parachutes, even though they sometimes didn't hit anything. Are you sure you were above the burst height? The bomb will open 1500ft AGL, so you need to be somewhere above that for the bomb to deploy properly. EDT: I just tried if it is possible to drop CBUs below burst height (1500ft) and it is. But of course I did not hot anything. So make sure you have correct altitude

[BORESIGHT FIRST] Can't get Mav seeker to Align with TPOD
Donglr replied to jonsky7's topic in DCS: F-16C Viper
Ah, so Danzig wants to align HUD LOS to Mav LOS? I guess that is what the screenshot is trying to say. Hmm, never heard about that in the current state of the F16 in DCS. I don't think it is a thing (yet). -
Well I have seen instances when switching to Mavs in A2G mode a steerpoint diamond was created in front of me at an elevation my aircraft bore sight was pointing at. So getting weired symbology is not rare. However I as well think the thread opener either has not set the elevation for his steerpoint correctly or might have some issues with the aircraft itself not knowing at what altitude it is. So check altimeter setting (PNEU/ELEC) and QFE as well as make sure you have proper INS alignment.
