That's a beautiful job. I've moved on to a 4-screen setup now but, thinking of my buddies, I wonder if that has any frame rate hit?

It's all above (I know that's a lot to trawl through) but did you turn of 'Takeoff Assist'. Did you try stick back and some right aileron (top of stick at the right hand edge of the weapons panel behind it) and a small amount of right rudder plus holding the brakes initially until mid-RPM to get some airflow over the tail? Then brakes off, increase throttle (you don't need full power, 2700rpm should do it) anticipate/watch for early drift and catch it immediately.

Unless Rabbl's just trying to steal too-cool's win? Or sick joke?

Yes a distant alternate base would help with the vulching on any server. The vulchers would then become targets :)

I'm sure your right about the startup/checklist (several of our ex-IL-2 '46 guys couldn't be bothered with the slightly more simplistic CoD system) but in DCS RWin+Home does it all for you. Of course there's about a 1 minute wait while it does. I guess the answer for no-startup is for some others to get together and create a server but I wonder if, for a one minute wait, anyone is likely to bother because the guys that create servers/missions generally seem to prefer the full monty. DCS seems to have tried always to be 'as real as it gets' within the limitations of our kit and I think some guys will find more in DCS than they want to deal with. However there are 'Game' settings/options available if someone wants to make a server for that. Horses for courses I guess.

Demon, don't give up. There is an easy way to start all the aircraft, press RightWindowsKey + Home. If, like me, you don't have a RWin key you can go into controls for the aircraft, scroll down to 'Start Procedure' and click on the Keyboard Entry. Then click Add at the bottom and enter a different key combination (I use LeftAlt+Home). That will add an extra combo to that control. You'll need to do that for each aircraft you fly. Actually, now I'm used to it all I start by hand because it's quicker but that autostart will do it all for you to begin with. Here are a couple of random Youtube videos that show how to take off in the P-51D and FW190D-9. These are truly random selections and there are plenty of others if you search Youtube. Most important, I see you are in Canada. If you can get online during a weekend afternoon you'll usually find a number of European guys online during their evenings and using TeamSpeak. Of course you may find Amercas-side guys on during your evenngs. Ask for Teamspeak connection details in Chat, talk to them, explain the problem and someone is likely to help. Try one of the more heavily populated servers like Kirk's Hangar or one of the 'aerobatic' servers where initially you won't have top worry about getting shot down. When you get the hang of it you can move to the combat servers like ACG or DoW etc.. btw "Your servers are empty"... DCS do not provide servers, the community (ordinary guys like you or me or a group of them) put up those servers and in no sense are they failing, they are helping. I know it can be frustrating taking on a serious flight model but please come to the community with the right spirit and you'll find help. You may find 'easy settings' servers but DCS does tend to attract guys who like to do it as realistically as possible.

IMHO...... I've been doing this for best part of twenty years. The answer is KISS. Get on line with TS and make friends. Fly together and the old hands will teach you. Even ask to join a Squad. 'Training' is ok but it can be too rigid and can get tedious. Basics yes (combat moves and formations) but there's no quicker way to learn than on the job with an experienced wingie. btw the ACG server spawns enemy if numbers are low so there's always somehing to fight. Don't know about DoW.

Gave up waiting for a sale ... need WW2 module advice.

I'm using JoystickCurves (along with the required Vjoy) as it is much more flexible for curve settings than the simplistic xx% curves in DCS. -

You can't go wrong with any one of the P-51D/FW190D-9/Bf109-K but they are easier to take off and land in that order (IMHO). You will know from the free core game which gives you a free TF-51D what the Mustang is like. It can be used on-line in some servers if you haven't done that yet. It should whet your appetite for the purchased version or one of the slightly more challenging LW types. The Bf109-K (currently in beta) is said by some to be the better dogfighter but also said by some to be a bit uber and may change. So in your position I'd either buy the Mustang if I really liked it from the TF-51D or the FW for a change of experience. -
I think the question must be "Where are all the US-timezones WWII pilots?" because as pointed out above the DoW and ACG WWII servers are always there. Perhaps the lure of jets is too strong still in the US part of the community. They are easier to fly although weapon systems are more complex to manage. That's not a derogatory comment btw, it's horses for courses, personally I'm more a 'stick and rudder' man. The long established DCS community has been almost entirely jet-jockeys. I think it will change once the Normandy map comes out. Some of our own Squad in CoD are waiting for the Normandy map and better campaign opportunities to produce that more historical feel. The P-47D and the MkIX Spitfire (both due soon) should also give the community a big boost and the 'more serious' WWII on-line community are likely to start graduating to DCS more.

Only if we can have the Buccaneer :)

Didn't I see you in "Those magnificent men in their flying machines" ? You were wearing a pointed helmet. Sorry, I really must get out more. :)

Hi Mike - got it in one.... almost :) I have the open and close keys mapped to a CH controller which is set up correctly but I forgot that I had tried experimenting with putting it on a spare rotary under the Axes commands. Of course, it is a spare because it is noisy and no good for trims etc. Should be ok now. Thanks.

Just that. I get stuck into a fight and suddenly the canopy starts to slide open. I close it (tricky while in a fight) and several seconds later it does it again. I'm using the Open and Close keys to control it and I can't find a 'canopy' lock' facility. Any ideas out there?

I think he's pulling our leg (did you notice the  and that he's running a GTX580 already?). It's way down on the TomsHardware hierarchy chart: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html Mind you, only a 580.... Hmmmm.... maybe he needs to dig into his pockets a bit deeper ;)

Glad to hear all is well :) My watermark problem has disappeared, probably something to do with the latest drivers. I finished my triple screen upgrade (four screens in fact at around 8Mega Pixels total) and it runs around 30-50 fps in the air, only around 20-25 on the ground but I'm still tweaking.
-
Sounds about right. 1080p should be fine too. Multiple screens will eat into that.
-
What are your PC specs? CPU/speed, RAM, in-game settings, Nvidia control panel settings including for the DCS.exe ('Manage 3D settings'), total screen resolution. These will all affect the results you get.
-
Just a little update. I'm running the 980 fairly hard at around 8.5 mega-pixels across four screens. Most settings on Medium and AF at x8. Returns about 20fps on the ground (a smooth 20fps strangely) and easily over 30fps in the air. I did have a problem using all three Display Ports when I finally got my third DP screen for Christmas but it turned out to be a driver issue with (970/980?) DPs so make sure you have the latest driver. It would probably eat DCS on one HD screen at max settings. Not to bore you but here's a tour of my overall setup if you're interested.

The attached mission used to run ok. Since the last couple of weeks it crashes when I select a P-51D to fly. The Test mission only has 1 P-51D in it. With the a/c starting at a Turning Point in the air it would run first time but after Esc/Quit and Fly Again it crashes. It flies ok the first time again if I restart the game. It always crashes if I set the P-51D as Start on Ramp Hot. The attached me.log.ok.txt and dcs.log.ok.txt are from when I tried the Test mission in the air and no refly. All went ok. The attached me.log.notok.txt and dcs.log.notok.txt and dump file are from when it crashed. These things happen whether I start the missions from the Mission Editor or from the Missions on the main menu. It is happening before and after the Update to 1.2.14.35513 this morning. The FW-190D9 doesn't give me any trouble in the main mission. I can fly the P-51D in online servers ok. Any ideas anyone? I am having the same problem with both the free and the armed Mustang in a couple of my missions created a few weeks ago and which were ok (actually I just added the free one but also removed it). It is happening during the past few days (before today's update). I can fly the Mustangs in the on-line servers but not as standalone or in my own server. Did something change that I must accommodate in my missions?

I expect you've tried all this but... 1. Line up carefully and let it roll straight a couple of yards/metres to straighten the tail-wheel. 2. Pull the stick back to lock tailwheel and apply a little right aleron (top of stick in middle of Rocket panel). Apply a LITTLE right rudder. 3. Hold on brakes and power up to 2700 rpm but release brakes if nose starts to pull down 4. Release brakes and keep straight with small inputs or brake taps. At 100kph gradually ease the stick forward to neutral and be ready to catch any swing with very small rudder or TAP of brakes 5. On lift off be ready to catch swings, rolls etc with SMALL control inputs. It may squirl a bit - don't chase the squirls too hard, let it settle. Raise gear as soon as convenient - don't rush. Raise flaps above 300kph. NOTE! Go to Options and the SPECIAL Tab. Select FW190 D-9, Unchack Auto Rudder and move takeoff assitance left to Zero. Also if taking off in any crosswind don't use flaps. And make sure you're not carrying bombs. That lot's probably not in the pilots notes but it works for me. If the aileron/rudder offsets don't help try without. EDIT: Check elevator trim is neutral first (should be). Don't 'pull' it off the deck, if it doesn't fly off itself, EASE it off and don't climb until at least 350kph.

I'm not worried about the delay, just don't want people going off on a rant around the forums because they think it's available and they can't get it. Won't be long now. Maybe there are some fixes after the open beta. "2 weeks, be sure" ;) oh... sorry, wrong forum...
-
No it isn't, you must have recent the open beta of DCS. The Module manager only offers a beta version (presumably you have to have the recent open beta to get it, the DCS Downloads page still say it will be "available in December" and attempts to Download it tell you the files aren't available yet..... at the moment..... 18:00 UK time.......... and I think they've knocked off now....... maybe.......

Only if 'taking it off' gets you +60dB engine sound increase, inhibits all in-game comms and Teamspeak :)
