This isn't accurate. They did it once n the air but they did not on the ground. -

They were restricted because the rudders don't have the authority at low speeds to counter an engine failure with the other engine in full AB. Its for safety. If it cooked the JDBs, the Navy would have found a tougher material to make it work with AB if they needed it, ala the F-35B melting old style decks and now a tougher material n place on F-35B ships. -

beautiful. Thanks Nick! -
Just to be clear, it was forbidden to use afterburner on takeoff- either at the boat or a land airbase. Once you lifted off with 2 good motors, light em up. Will Heatblur's F-14B leave the carrier at full Mil as they did IRL?
-
They weren't all locked and removed. Many were, but you can see them used in Top Gun and airshow videos. Heatblur would like to have them, but not if it impacts release. I'd expect it in the future-maybe eighteen months after release.

yes-updates to the same system......10 years later.
-
The F-14D IRST was very capable and a crutch for the crews. You shouldn't have any information on its actual capalities other than assumed capabilities based on the theory.
-
Yep the early IR seeker under the nose didnt work well and was replaced by the TCS on all F-14As. It should not be confused with the F-14Ds IRST which was a much more capable system.

Heatblur 1st:dev to introduce Jetwash in DCS?
turkeydriver replied to CoBlue's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
I should have stated more clearly instead of focusing on the negative. I think its a great immersive feature and I look forward to the depth it brings. We will se it first with the F-14B so it wont be a huge issue. I'm apprehensive about how the TF-30 stalls will be treated. If I can avoid them completely by flying the engine and taking precautions I'll be happy. -
Heatblur 1st:dev to introduce Jetwash in DCS?
turkeydriver replied to CoBlue's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
I do not like that the interview yesterday referred to jetwash as the effect in the movie top gun that we will have to be careful with our TF-30s. Jetwash shouldn't do crap to a TF-30. If its just the guys that don't know trying to hype a feature- that's fine, but its not accurate. -
All remaining F-14As in the mid to late 90s strapped on bombs and used LANTIRN. They carried all LGBs and dumb bombs, and Navy CBUs. They were not JDAM capable. All F-14A+ were redesignated F-14B (no actual change), then these were upgraded and the general uninformed public call these "bombcats". These received the sparrowhawk hud and PTID. The F-14D received PTID as well. Both upgrade F-14B and F-14D could drop JDAM.

Where is the facepalm emote? Does it only work with Maverick's jet?
-
And other TOPGUN grads would tell you jet wash would never do that unless you were parked 10 feet behind a jet in afterburner and its blowing straight down your intake. The jetwash in the movie was the there for the sole purpose of killing Goose, whose canopy impact in a flat spin was far more plausible than jetwash killing an engine. Would have been realistic if he threw the throttles around at high alpha while rolling...….instant spin. repeat jetwash- especially from an F-5 or A-4 wont even make your Turkey hiccup. Though the engines are finicky- jet wash isn't gonna do it. It never happened in the fleet due to jetwash. Forget jetwash…...forever and ever and ever.
-
Never read that, please provide the source as Id like to read up on it.

Just about every fighter fling video has recorded TCS footage- you can tell its not lantern due to the symbology changes
-
You could VID F-5s and A-4s at least 10 and bigger fighters from farther. Ranges haven't been described with any finality.

There were a small amount of AWG-9 sets that had NCTR but it was determined to be too costly and unnecessary in a blue water intercept, so only a few sets had it (40?). This was in the early 80s- I don't know if the sets were for select squadrons or if they were pulled from the inventory and modded back to standard AWG-9 sets.

On the topic of Iranian Tomcats & Russian Weapons
turkeydriver replied to Cobra847's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Pictures make you determine thinks that aren't true.....What you see is a carry test and a launch test that had nothing to do with the onboard radar of the host jet. You are witnessing an early test of an AMRAAM before it was ever in service. The AWG-9 could not work with AMRAAM. The APG-71 could. The AMRAAM upgrage would have happened if the Navy was allowed by congress to buy/convert all its F-14s to the D standard. -
I would- but I doubt the accuracy of the story beyond PR. The Iranians wouldn't risk an F-14 in an unguided air to mud mission. They will get shot down, and they need the radar alone to keep their airspace clear. We have documented testing where the bomb stays next to the fuselage upon release even if you roll. Those weapons wont separate unless they are released into the airflow away from the fuselage.
-
No, this is wrong. The US Navy never approved or funded the multiple bombs/Phoenix pallet load. Under testing the bombs wouldn't separate. One bomb per pallet for all Navy jets. A maximum load of 4 500lbers or 4 1000 lbers, or possibly 3 2000 lbers. No fantasy loadouts please. The 13 bomb loadout in the 70s was never drop tested or approved.

KEEP THOSE AIM-Ps OFF THE NAVY JETS!!!!!! Those would be Iranian only if they ever bought them. AIM-9P is an Air Force and export only weapon.

** DCS: F-14 Development Update - September!! **
turkeydriver replied to Cobra847's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Lets just say anything regarding proper simulation of the F-14- even today- over a decade after its retirement, is of interest to those watching. The F-5 does not offer unique capabilities usually reserved for superpowers. The F-14 offers speed, range, detection, and destruction capabilities that most other countries can only mitigate through numbers or tactics. They cannot afford to mimic or beat this. Its a MiG-31 that can dogfight. Its just too bad we haven't destroyed them yet.
