The Rift controllers will use TWO external camera trackers, and most users see little difference in the Tracking between the Vive lasers, and Rift optical trackers. From the beginning Oculus understood that VR hardware was worthless without the necessary VR software. Oculus was investing millions of dollars in software development while Vive was spending zero until very recently. Not to mention that most of the software Oculus financed will work with Vive headsets aswell. It was so very easy for Vive to suggest that all content should run on all VR headsets when they weren't investing anything into VR software for quite sometime. Condemning Oculus for having a couple of exclusive titles for a short while is very short sited. One minute the Facebook haters say that their VR content is full of spyware, and then get p*ssed when they can't access some of it.

+1. Most flight sim devs, and users with both headsets prefer the Rifts comfort, display quality, SDK pixel density slider, and ATW software. The Vive systems is still a very good choice, as people can enjoy very immersive roomscale games right now. BUT I think there will be some secret Vive buyers remorse when the Rift releases the more refined Touch controllers and all the controller game software they've been investing in for the last few years.

The chances of a substantial increase in quality of second generation VR headsets is starting to look very good. Samsung is now creating 4K VR displays, Nvidia/AMD are putting VR optimising hardware/software into their GPUs, Microsoft/others are creating in ear hardware/software to minimize motion sickness, Oculus/others are working on eyetracking, universities are creating new very slim optic lenses, etc etc. The future looks very good.

There is no doubt that the 1080 could be 25 percent faster in many software cases. Some are suggesting they aren't seeing any increase in DCS. I was suggesting that the most important part of these new cards, is its VR hardware,, which could amount to much more than 25 percent increase in framerates in VR. I did mention VRWorks in my post, but the question is how, or if DCS take advantage of this software to enable the VR hardware on the card. Since VRWorks is just software, it could be doable, if it isn't too costly in time/money. There is no doubt that DCS needs many optimizations, but improved GPU drivers can help. There are always multiple factors in regards to software performance.

We may or may not see much difference between a 980Ti and the 1080 in regards to frame rates in DCS at this time. This will improve somewhat as the drivers improve. "BUT" The main performance enhancement on the new 1080's is its included new VR hardware parts. This alone would make a huge difference in the VR performance in complex sims like DCS, almost doubling frame rates. I know some AMD forums members will say VRWorks/Nvidia/DCS can't do this, and can't do that, but the DCS development team would be fools not to atleast look at the possibility of amending their software to take advantage of the 1080's VR hardware.

Hopefully DCS can optimize their software for both VR headsets. That said most flight simmers, and devs that have used both prefer the performance, and clarity of the Rift. Especially the Rifts ATW software, and the debug tools apparent resolution improvements. I also doubt that the Vive is outselling the Rift, but its hard to tell as neither have released any sales numbers. It appears that anyone buying a Vive doesn't have to wait too long while Rift buyers are having to wait months. HTC has long standing experience in producing products, but I doubt they are that much faster, unless Oculus is experiencing quality control problems, or custom part delays, which is quite possible.

How much better is Rift than Vive for DCS World?

My glasses are too wide to fit into the Rift comfortably. I just took the arms off a second pair of glasses I had and secured them into the headset so they could be easily removed if someone else wanted to try the Rift. The Rifts custom display, custom lenses, lightweight comfort, and especially the ATW Oculus software that allows for smoother game play makes it the more obvious choice for flight simmers. There is no way of knowing for sure, but I'm also expecting the Rifts controllers to be more refined as well. That said there is still a lot of immersive entertainment value in the Vive. -
Personally I don't like icons, as they kill immersion, but they are a necessary evil, as I no longer have the vision I had in my twenties. I haven't tried it yet, but like DCS compromise option to increase the size of the distant aircraft, which is far more immersive than large colored Icons. Offline I like the option to be able to momentarily enable Icons in game. Online I wingup with pilots that can see distant aircraft. Although having Icons isn't a huge issue for most flight simmers, as over ninety percent of flight simmers use them anyway. Just check out how many people are in the Icon servers as opposed to non Icon servers. Atleast that was the case in the very popular IL-2 1946 series servers.

Nice to see someone with common sense. :) It is taking way to long to provide these preorder units, but besides the Best Buy contract, either they were hit with far more orders than they expected, or there are unusually high quality control issues. I know I'm in the RMA process with my second Rift. If I weren't primarily interested in flight sims I would cancel the Rift, and buy the Vive, but there are issues with the Vive as well, so I could be jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. Bring on the second generation.

I have three installs of DCS on my computer, Alphas, Betas, etc but I need the hard drive space. Which one would be best to keep for VR use, and will it be upgraded to the final version, or will I have to download a new final version?

I just started DCS in flight without plugging in my Hotas. The aircraft fairly quickly turned over and dove for the deck. It was scary..... I had to quickly end the flight, as it felt like I was actually going in with the aircraft. That never happened on a monitor. lol

Checking six in VR is the biggest problem for old farts, trying to simulate the flexibility of a 19 year old fighter pilot.

There is no doubt that the Vive is very good, but if your a flight simmer there is no doubt that the Rift is the better choice. Its obvious the displays, optics, comfort, and ATW software are better than the Vives. I'll add some Tom's hardware quotes aswell. "If this comparison were about the headset alone, the Rift would be the clear winner here. Oculus has clearly put a lot effort into designing the most comfortable HMD it can, and combining it with class-leading optics and display technology, excellent built-in audio and perfect tracking. When you are wearing the Rift, and it is properly adjusted, it almost feels like it isn’t there." "The Rift does have a wild card, though. That’s its upcoming Touch controllers, which could be a game changer. Google Toms Hardware, its has a recent very indepth review of the Rift/Vive. If your primarily a Fflight/Racing/Space simmer the Rifts custom displays, custom hybrid Fresnel optics, comfort, and ATW software might be the better choice. Flight sim modders like Flyinside have indicated this aswell. Cliffs of Dover is also implementing Rift support. If you prefer room scale VR, and can't wait for the Rift Touch controllers, get the Vive now. The Vive system is a very good choice, but if you buy the Rift, and wait for the Touch tracked controllers its likely to be a more refined total package. The only big "if" is how the consumer version of the Rifts dual camera constellations system stands up to the Vive dual laser tracking system. The Vive system will allow for larger room scale if the Rift system can't use extenders, or the Rift trackers don't have enough tracking depth, but that is yet to be determined. -
It appears they are targeting VR Arcades, which makes sense considering the very highend system required to drive that many pixels. Hopefully Nvidias new multi projection, and other tech optimizations will drive down the system requirements.

Basic performance improvement are good, but by far the most important aspect of these new cards is the VR hardware included that allows for multi projection on a single pass, which would blow away the 980Ti. But it still remains to be seen how that feature will be restricted. The fact that the card has special hardware for that feature,, it should be possible to exploited that hardware with software other than DX12/NVGameWorks. -

That's an awesome setup, and Nvidia's new gpus will allow you to wrap the outside displays more without losing perspective, with a nice increase in performance. That said, as good as it will look, you will still be looking a collection of image boxes in your room. VR takes you out of your room, and places you in the VR world. The far lower res of the headset is soon forgotten, in most cases, but I'm still not sure of the current consumer versions of VR are good enough for spotting the distant objects that are so critical in flight sims. It won't effect me so much, as I can no longer see the distant objects anyway, and just wing up with those that can. -

I agree coding Multiple graphics Engine Features Specific to each GPU Vendor's Proprietary Features is not cost effective, so I would drop the inferior graphics card support if there is a significant difference in performance. So far that has never been necessary, as the performance was close enough not to bother. We will have to see the VR benchmarks, AMD's answer to the 1080, and more importantly if AMD can match the One Pass image if in fact One Pass imaging is as effective in VR as it suggests. -

I have no problem with DCS not having interest in GameWorks up to now, BUT they definitely should take a much closer look at this multi projection tech. I have no addiction to AMD or Nvidia, and just buy the best gpu for the flight sims I fly. Holding the performance of this sim back to different gpus lowest common denominator is not the best strategy when VR is the future. DCS needs all the performance it can find for it succeed in VR, not doing so will regulate the sim to EAW status. As I've said in another thread, that I was surprised at Nvidias lower price point, which makes me think Nvidia is a little worried at what AMD might have up their sleeve. -

It definitely will effect frame rates positively when this new tech can send two different images to the VR displays in ONE pass. Only an exclusive AMD user would view this as a bad thing. I am surprised at the lower price point, which make me think Nvidia is worried about what AMD might have up their sleeve. This is very good for consumers. Hopefully DCS, and Oculus SDK can take advantage of this new tech in the near future. There is always marketing hype, but its NOT ALL marketing hype, otherwise we would still have the performance of the first gpu's.

"likely" isn't a definitive No either. I'ts also likely that DCS, and Oculus SDK could take advantage of the gpu's hardware/software multi projection tech even if it is a GameWorks feature.
