Engine controls, management, RPMs and Manifold pressures
Altflieger replied to Juuba's topic in DCS: Fw 190 D-9 Dora
The manual for the 190 is a work in progress, it's an interesting read but next to useless as it stands. The position of the throttle lever, rpm and fuel consumption is for your information. You should KNOW this information, your life depends upon it. One engine, no petrol, not good. Example: Bomber stream crossing Dutch coast, you in Fw190 at Berlin. When do you take off to intercept? How long to get to 35 000ft? What throttle setting would you use? If you climb at lower power setting and take off earlier will this increase your time in combat? Etc, etc... But with maps 390x390km, none of this currently matters. (Wags please note:)) -
Good spot. This would explain the somewhat wild takeoff effects and that sudden leap into the air when the wheels lift. The real one sits much squatter on the ground, see how much nearer the prop is to the ground. There are also noticable differences between the respective rudders and aerials as well. Someones going to be busy sorting this out.

Gunther Rall had a mirror on his 109 in the BOB, he said that because of the vibration if you did manage to see anything in it, it was time to bail out! Several British pilots came to the same conclusion, "Bl**dy useless!", was the general view. By 1944, don't know if they'd have bothered, but s'pose you could have fitted your own.

Thinking Wags start up proceedure might need revising? Switch on as little as possible (fuel pumps, instruments only?), before the engine is running and even then on the ground just switch on only what's required. In the air generator output should be greater than consumption other than for brief periods but would need to see amps v rpm graph, assuming constant voltage over say, 1000 rpm.
-
Just like to add that although the inability to generate stick forces in a 109 is seen as a weakness, it did prevent the pilot from overstressing the airframe, and was a design "feature", deemed as positive by the Germans. Late 109's, k4's and G10's had a completely revised control stick system to cope with increasing stick forces, flettners lightened somewhat the forces required to move control surfaces. Almost everything on a k4 is bigger/better than say a G6, comparisons between them would like mk V and mk xiv spitfires, superficially similar but that's as far as it goes.

Sorry didn't realise you weren't using pedals. Can't recommend enough that you get some.. the 109k could be a real handfull. A cheap stick with twist rudder could be canabalised to make a set of pedals with brakes if you're slightly of the DIY tendency. And you'd have the choice of setting angle/width of your pedals. Have saiteks myself and they are just up to it with DCS regarding feel. If it were possible to use FFB pedals I'd be getting the tools out! About the ailerons, when the tailwheel is near the ground or on it the the one that is raised is hidden somewhat by the wing in front of it. The one that sticks down however is in the airflow unimpeded hence the twisting on landing. Just noticed this last night so have some work to do to correct it. :)

Have noticed that if the ailerons are even only slightly up/down, the aircraft will respond going right/left, even if the rudder is neutral. You have to use the brakes, stabbing on off to stop it ground looping. I can now take off and land without killing myself but it's not pretty sometimes, lol. Found that driving it around on the deck with tailwheel unlocked just using brakes helped a lot as well. Good luck.

Agree about the current state of the invunerable AI, but a 30mm mineshell landing anywhere on a P51, should, if it doesn't blow it to pieces, mortally wound it making any further combat pointless. Wags says there is a big September update coming, perhaps this is the long awaited EDGE. IF the game engine can then run on a multicore processor then it's possible that a much more comprehensive damage model will ensue that will truly represent the destructive effectiveness of weapons. As an aside Bob Tuck, spitfire ace remarked that after being hit by canon shells planes fell apart under g force stresses, more often than not. While you're here K, reading a post on another forum saying that Erla produced a batch of K4 "specials", highly polished and well put together, claimed to have photographic eveidence, didn't post it though. Also discovered some G10's had retractable tailwheels.....apparently. Still think any speed difference between the two would have been minimal at best.
-
It'll be more like "that 30mm is overmodelled", lol!

If it's wrong it's wrong. Could have said what the correct options were though. Black might be good.

Landed wheels up last night, thinking, well I'm sure I pressed the button and heard them start to down. On the debrief screen first unusual thing is battery solenoid fault, then lists almost complete shutdown of electrics. I'd been doing takeoff/landings and the previous landing was slightly bumpy. Banged the tail down hard so maybe this thing is an effect of that?

October 1st? Got me a date with Captain America....

B4 + MW50 at 1.8 ata? Still having nightmares about the K4?

Set throttle to idle command in the controls list is what you do to shut down the engine when you're done flying. The line below it in commands is set throttle to start, is the one that moves the throttle lever to er, the idle position :). Start though in German is take off but I doubt if you'd be taking off with the lever in the idle position, lol. This is a bug in the sense that the controls list could be better worded. Happy flying....

50 cal Ballistics/Aircraft Damage Model Questions/Concerns
Altflieger replied to USARStarkey's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
I'm wondering if the MG 151/20 and the .50 cal's aren't modelled the same in terms of damage effects. There seems to be some kind of points scoring system used in the debrief screen, as in the figure shown in brackets. Certainly the effect of German mineshells seem very muted. Until someone from the dev team gives a thorough and in depth explanation of how ballistics are modelled, we're all in the dark.... -
Anyone has p51 online dogfight vs Dora?
Altflieger replied to Pandacat's topic in DCS: P-51D Mustang
Good, it's not just me then! I've noticed that when the ai reappears he's always directly behind me.... :) -
Found this 30mm Mineshell test by British on spitfire wing at 100yds.

Starkey you keep spewing out these numbers, where from? I read somewhere isn't going to do anymore, I'm afraid, that goes for all of us, Yoyo's not going to change anything on your or my say so. You say the mustangs not uber but here you are posting that every German fighter that opposed it was inferior in some way. You rubbish ww2 tests that you don't agree with, which is fine if you can back it up with primary sources, otherwise it's just hot air. You may have a point but it's hard to see the wood from the trees at the moment. Show me the money :)

Only found out by chance yesterday that default is on. I'll be kind and say it was an oversight in the beta release. Or Yoyo's got a funny sense of humour.

It's a great irony that what we fly over now, in 1943, was where one of the greatest air battles took place, as the Germans retreated across the Kuban back to the Crimea. Made the Battle of Britian, in terms of action look like a side show, but with no Russian fighters and an odd late war selection of planes, it's a non starter. Could have been hell of a sim though. If only someone had thought about it. Are we getting an SDK? Hope so. Luftwaffe map club, lol!

so they built them with no aileron and rudder trim
Altflieger replied to leafer's topic in DCS: Fw 190 D-9 Dora
It's either 2100 rpm or 2400 rpm AFAIK... -
DCS 20 min Pleasure flights over Normandy beaches, doesn't quite have the same ring to it though...
