If it's working from Hotstart but not ramp it sound like your missing a step? I've not played with the Huey in a while but I remember having problems with the KA 50, having to check frequency from the map then making sure the radio was on the correct channel and frequency.

I run DCS at 4K and this is the mod I use; http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/1412130/?sphrase_id=1821909 The only thing to watch is you need to reinstall it every time the game updates.

KH-25MPU in single mission "command post strike"
John C Flett replied to WelshZeCorgi's topic in Su-25T Issues
I've just been playing this mission myself with similar problems. I haven't been back to it but I was planning on changing my loadout to carry more bombs while tasking my wingman to take out the air defences. It is my feeling that a lot of DCS missions require alternate strategies to beat them so never be afraid to play about with arming, waypoints etc. -
A question about full version vs demos...
John C Flett replied to trist007's topic in General Problems
Your seeing two separate buttons? "Download beta" and "buy"? Just click on "Download beta" then run the installer. The game will verify your purchase key when you run it. If it's the word "beta" that is confusing you, most of the modules are technically unfinished. Mostly, entirely playable but still waiting for some features. -
I'm thinking he didn't really know what he means. I've read a few of his books and enjoy them well enough but it's not the first time I've thought he's described something which he didn't really understand.
-
Doable then. But not normal practice, civilian or military? Specifically, going back to the quote, a normal turn would still be coordinated rudder and stick, not this avoidance of rudder that Child describes.
-
I've just finished reading Lee Child - Running Blind and there was a paragraph that bothered me; "The plane was on descent. Reacher could feel it in his ears. And he could feel the abrupt turns. The pilot was military, so he was using the rudder. Civilian pilots avoid using the rudder. Using the rudder makes the plane slew, like a car skids. Passengers don't like the feeling. So civilian pilots turn by juicing the engines on one side and backing off on the others. Then the plane comes around more smoothly. But the military pilots don't care about their passengers' comfort. It's not like they've bought tickets." Now, my understanding, mainly from FSX lessons though I'm sure DCS has covered it too, is that the plane slips UNLESS you use rudder. Coordinated turns with stick and rudder for smooth flight. Broadly the opposite of the book. Additionally, no talk of bank. Are they turning the plane purely on rudder? Could you even do that? I would use a bit of rudder to counter a crosswind but not to actually turn the plane. So can somebody with more practical knowledge clarify or confirm if the book is simply talking nonsense?

Bay of Hogs - New Huey Campaign
John C Flett replied to SFC Tako's topic in User Created Missions General
Just finished the second mission. I found knocking out the two AA guns and not losing control of the helo REALLY tough but that's about my skill. I don't think it was unfair. After that all went smoothly. Again, a very enjoyable mission. You pack a lot into your missions and they're pretty intense which is a lot of fun. Loved the music at the end though it took me a moment to realise it was ingame and not something my media player had fished out. I have plenty of latin music of my own. Thanks again and looking forward to mission 3 when my nerves are recovered. -

In my defence I'd like to say that track was intentional bad flying and I'm not usually that rough. Though several dead engines might disagree. Ah well, this is why pilots have to keep flying to stay qualified. -

Good news. It is good old fashion pilot error. I told you I was rusty. I've included a track. Please forgive the rubbish flying, that's rather the point. It seems I can force an engine failure very easily running the collective quickly up and down and I think I just misjudged the approach to the AA position and overcompensated. I then repeated the same error on my next flight. Simple. I have been playing a bit further and I am going to have to practice my approaches before I can take both those AA positions. Actually, I think it would be a good idea to do a full refresher on the Huey but I'll feedback as I get further with the campaign. Engine fail2.trk -

I'm off to work now but I'll take a look tonight. It did occur to me that I may have set something by accident and certainly I don't remember having engine problems before though I am also rusty with the Huey so I may be pushing it too hard. Really I wish there was a proper black box on these things as the mission log just doesn't give enough info. It may have been a pure coincidence but it was just so strange that for the time and distance the failure happened at so close to the same point. -

Tako, I've tried the second mission three times, all failed. First time clearly my fault, I got over excited at the first LZ and dusted off too soon. My bad. Second and third time though were a bit strange. I approach the airbase, the alarm goes off, I approach the first target and my engine fails. I've watched two Tacview replays and both engine failures were within a minute of each other and both helos went down with a few metres of each other. Debrief seems only to show damage after I hit ground. In both cases I had stopped a few rounds enroute, the first time damaging my DC convertor. May be pure coincidence and I'll try again in a day or two but I thought I'd report it. Otherwise the mission seems again very good and I was enjoying it until my engines let me down. -

Red-lining is pushing it to the safe limits. Usually indicated by, you guessed it, a red-line. Most aircraft have a "Never exceed speed" marked by a red indicator on the scale, on the Huey its about 120 MPH. Take an aircraft beyond that speed and you run the risk of breaking things, like rotors. -

Right, just finished the first mission. Really good, I'm looking forward to continuing with the campaign another day. A couple of brief thoughts; you really need to red-line it at the first objective. I've no problem with that but can I suggest if you do any revisions making that clearer in the briefing. Landing on the roof. No real problems but you do realise that we're landing in a tree? Lucky trees can't kill us. Lastly, and about the Huey rather than the mission. I'm rusty but during my attempts I managed to break my engine a few times. I don't remember that happening before. Am I just being ham-fisted or is engine stress something that has been added? Again, thanks for this great mission and I'll keep feeding back as time allows me to continue the campaign. -

Thanks. I had wondered last night if a power dive was in order rather than a low, level approach. It had occured to me after posting that the speed set in the editor didn't translate well to MPH ( or whatever the Huey uses ). I'll give it a shot again tonight. -

Thanks for the campaign. I love the Huey so I was happy to have an excuse to fire it up again. Sadly, I've already come unstuck. I can't hit the first trigger on the first mission. Checking the triggers I'm supposed to be doing 60 at less than 25ft. I've broken 80 at under 20 and yet nothing is happeing. I've looked in the editor and can't see any problem. Anybody have any thoughts or ideas? -
DCS: Mi-8MTV2 English Flight Manual
John C Flett replied to EvilBivol-1's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
Thanks guys. I love the manuals almost as much as the modules themselves and I'll be reading this one over the next few days though I guess I still need to wait for the final before getting it printed. -
This has been something that has driven me nuts for years in sims. Going back to the early days of EAW and PAW, the graphics etc. were so basic there was no way to tell what damage you'd done so you had nothing to judge until an enemy plane blew up or went down. With Sturmovik I became very much aware that the AI aircraft were not flying by the same rules I was. I can easily understand why it would be so hard to both track all the damage options and have the AI compensate for them. Some games hide it better than others but I think its a problem common to all sims and I think it has always been part of DCS, its just that the increased lethality of modern weapon systems left AI aircraft less likely to survive a hit. I have still seen enemy bombers happily fly home streaming flames more times than I can count. Sadly, as we see more aircraft with quite basic weapons, these and other shortcomings of the AI become more apparent as our fights get closer and more prolonged. It doesn't spoil most of these games for me but if we could see more complex AI and damage models in future DCS updates it would be very welcome, especially if we are going to see more early aircraft.

Request for help - name the aircraft
John C Flett replied to John C Flett's topic in Military and Aviation
The face is 8cm across. Sorry, should have thought to include that. Thanks, G00dnight. That is an interesting thought, I'll try investigating that route too. -
Kind of an unusual one but I'm sure the collective knowledge base here can help. I have a clock, its been mounted on wood but I'm told it is from a WWII aircraft. It may be the norm for aircraft clocks but the winder and adjuster mechanism are worked by twisting the glass cover. What I'm hoping is, can anybody tell me the aircraft that this was from ( assuming I'm not misled as to it's origins ). Thanks in advance.

No harm done and still good advice for when I graduate to the C model. It's funny actually, that some of the problems I've had come from the simplicity of the FC3 model. It's fun but I kept trying to do things like marking steerpoints or turning off auto-sequencing. Anyway, I'm home from work, I'm going to do myself some dinner and then I'm going to set up a few cluster bomb training missions. In particular, I want to experiment with combinations; see if I can use a maverick to stop a convoy, force them to circle the wagons and then bomb them while they're all nice and bunched up. Hopefully I'll have a nice collection of burning vehicles before bed. Hopefully I won't be one of them!
-
So practice. Always good advice. I will probably do a few runs when I get home tonight and examine the results. I loved the Huey campaign. Really well done and varied and of course the Huey is so much fun to fly. I've not played the Mi-8 yet but it will probably be the next aircraft I try. Thanks again for all the input.

Perhaps, but I tend to find that for CCIP I have to get too close to return fire and for CCRP from altitude its not accurate enough for moving targets. Essentially, I find that it's too inflexible a weapon. Though if you have hints for better employing it, please, I'd be happy to learn.
-
Thanks guys. You seem to share my thoughts on some missions. Stuge, I do feel that many missions have poor weapon choices and I will usually change my loadout. Likewise I've found that many missions seem to have very poor placing of waypoints; IP placed over enemy positions and usually too close to settle the aircraft and target weapons effectively. I don't mind making these changes. Falcon 4 was similar for giving you missions plans that seemed doomed to failure. I just feel that in an open campaign you are given the permission, in pre-set scenarios it does feel a little like cheating. I'm glad to say I'm pretty happy with my weapons and systems. I don't much care for CBUs and CCRP mode but that is an issue of style. I know how they work and can use them when I have to. The gun I love, though many environments don't make it a practical choice but I've kind of learned how close I need to be to damage certain targets and when I need to turn off others. I'm still not happy with my SAM evasion in the A10. It was much easier in the F15 which had much more energy, but I'm getting there. Lastly, I'm not above doing a bit of editing where I think it's required. In the "Visit to the Port" mission I mentioned above, I was quite happy to add the SEAD flight that seemed to be missing and to amend the triggers for the second CAS flight so they actually stayed in the area and made multiple attacks. I'm loving DCS and well aware I've barely scratched the surface of the game but with a title so large, deep and complex it's good to get other peoples perspectives and what I've seen here you are a community with much to offer so thanks again for you input.

I remember having problems when I first got my pedals too. Especially as joystick twist, at least in more basic sims, reversed the controls. Even after I was used to it it never made total sense until I played Rise of Flight and you could actually see the mechanism at work. That was when the little light bulb went on in my head.
