I'm thinking it's a missing texture. If you illuminate the dials it still shows. Maybe the paint has worn off with overuse?

Mirage Radar dropping tracks in multi-bar search mode.
John C Flett replied to Wheelyjoe's topic in M-2000
It does seem to be saved and you can lock them even when invisible which makes me think it is the display rather than the radar which is bugged. The contacts should fade slowly in remenance mode but instead simply vanish. -
Mostly true but as it happens the mission I just played ( last campaign mission ) had some valley flying where the waypoints were pretty close together and I was unusually busy flying the jet. It will become second nature but it was a bad time for me to learn a new habit.
-
So, not simply me missing it. Thanks Jojo.

With the update we ( seem ) to have lost the button that auto advances waypoints ( ENC as I recall ). I know we do have a next/previous keybind but I preferred the auto option. Has anybody figured out if it's still possible?

Mirage Radar dropping tracks in multi-bar search mode.
John C Flett replied to Wheelyjoe's topic in M-2000
I've been having problems with this too but wondered if the problem was the Remanence dial as that is what ( as I understand it ) makes the image persist. I know this isn't a new problem but it seems worse since the latest update. -
No. Given the way DCS missions work on a simple win / lose system feel that that would just be another way to spoil a mission. Broken triggers can do that often enough. If we moved to a dynamic mission structure then I figure that system failures would add to the depth. In other titles I already have the option to scrub a mission if I think it would result in excessive casualties or divert if I find a higher priority target. In DCS ( as it stands ) these things are meaningless so I ignore them.

I got my Index headset last night. Only had a couple of hours with it so these are very early impressions; Set up was pretty easy, had to re-pair my Vive controllers which was easy enough. Had an issue with sound vanishing but a reboot dealt with that. Too early to say if it will reoccur. The wider field of view is something I have to take their word for. I can't say I really notice though you can see it change as you move the lenses but ingame I really don't see much difference. Image clarity was what I was really after and it is certainly a step up from the Vive. Screen door effect is still there but much more subtle. In game displays are far easier to read, much crisper. Not perfect but I suspect I may have hit a limit on my own eyes. I am astigmatic and wear glasses and where I am having problems in VR is probably where I would have problems IRL. What i can't do in VR of course is take my glasses off where I normally would. I may have to think about bi or vari focals. The biggest problem is eye strain. It may be related to my own problems but I do find it a bit worse on the Index. That said it took some months with the Vive before I found my ideal settings so I may simply need time. Performance also seems to be fine. I've not stress tested it yet but high speed low level flying in the P51 over Normandy resulted in slightly jerky frames but still playable. Higher level flight or taking the Huey low over Vegas all seemed fine. Early days but the Index seems to be offering the step up I expected.

I've printed all of mine out A5, bound, black and white; usually weighs in about £20 ( the A10-c was the most expensive ) and I think it's been well worth it, especially as it's been spread over several years. Plus I like having a shelf full of flight manuals and support material.

It's been a while since I played that scenario but as I recall your route follows a lot of geographical features like rivers and roads so good old VFR should get you there. It was a challenging scenario but I surprised myself by hitting the target on my first go.

Nordic Battle - Viggen DCE campaign
John C Flett replied to Cristofer's topic in User Created Missions General
Looking forward to playing this as I've just done the Viggen Red Flag campaign. But my goodness has it caused me troubles. I just couldn't get it running. Spent a couple of hours and it wouldn't update at the end of the mission. Tried double checking all my paths, anything I could think of. And of course it all came down to utter stupidity on my part. I had unwrapped it into a folder Nordic Battle so all my directories were actually "...campaign\nordic battle\nordic battle"! Done a test and everything seems fine but I'm now too tired to play. Ah well, live and learn and I'll give it a proper whirl on my day off. -
how is everyone dealing with clickable cockpit in VR?
John C Flett replied to hannibal's topic in Virtual Reality
I've been doing fine with the mouse. My desk setup makes it no problem to find blind and it has the advantage I don't need to look straight at a switch. -
+1 It's too easy to lose sight of how much love there is for this sim sometimes. Happy to add my voice to the appreciation.
-
If it's a .rar or .zip it means its a compressed file which is pretty normal for downloads. If you have compression utility you can maybe right click and select extract files. Failing that you may need to download a tool (they are really useful). Either way you'll end up with a folder containing all the .mis files and you place the whole folder in your en/campaigns folder.

UI font is too small to read, how to fix it?
John C Flett replied to liliyaea's topic in General Bugs
Does GUI scaling appear to do anything? I use it with 4K and text should be large enough to read no problem? -
[No Bug] Cold start training mission "space bar"
John C Flett replied to jonsky7's topic in Bugs and Problems
Go through your key bindings and check space isn't in conflict with any other function. I had this problem recently and discovered space was also reset VR view. Once I unbound that training missions worked fine. -
I share so many of these feelings. I'm lucky enough to have the time that I give DCS what it deserves but even so, especially after a day at work, I'm not always willing to do so. One thing that improved my experience and reduced my frustration was to stop playing campaigns and launch the missions through the editor. That way I'm not obliged to keep replaying if I don't want to. Especially when I've achieved all the mission goals but maybe bought it on the way home. I think the dynamic campaign will also be a big step forward. I know from my experience with another study sim that won't be named that death in a dynamic campaign is a speed bump and a learning experience but no longer a major problem ( unless you do it too often ). It also adds the extra dimension that everything starts to matter. Lose all your wingmen? Scrub a mission due to unforseen circumstances? Engage an enemy strike that happens to cross your path. You start having to think in ways that DCS doesn't presently require. I love DCS but a few small things can make it even easier to click that shortcut.

Don't get me started on the media and the way things are reported. To give them their due, they are rarely making the criticism, they merely report that somebody has done so. But in this 24 media the frenzy for stories means that anybody with a Twitter account can get coverage regardless of the merit. In the UK the BBC have a policy where they try to offer a counterpoint to most stories which is a great idea in theory but the number of times I've seen an expert with years of experience and numerous qualifications debating with some random member of the public who has nothing but a flight-of-fantasy opinion. End of the day, active service is the only critic that matters.
-
Yup, deja vu all over again. I don't follow all of this stuff, and of course before the internet it was a lot less visible, but I can recall the critics blasting the AH-64 and the M1 Abrams. Seem to remember the F15 had it's share of critics too.

Bingo! You're spot on. I can also see by zooming in it's called "Stung by a Hornet". There is a signature too but I can't make it out. You have a good eye there Dirty Sanchez.
-
While everybody else focuses on the HW I'd like a better look at that Hornet painting on your wall. Very nice. I struggle to find military / aviation art myself. Can we get a better photo and maybe tell us who the artist is?

Yaw to the left after landing
John C Flett replied to Irishlad200000's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
It's called ground loop and it can be a real issue with tail draggers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_loop_(aviation) I've not played the DCS Spit myself but it's a problem I've had with a lot of aircraft in DCS, IL-2, RoF etc. Best general advice I can give from my experience is not to land too fast and decelerate slowly. A too rapid stop is one cause I suffered from. Also, counterintuatively, increase power to increase airflow over your control surfaces and thus control. -
Soulless missions are poorly designed missions. Nothing to do with cinematics. IL2 BoS is a title I feel suffers from this as missions are rarely anything more than the players flight, a target and an enemy CAP. This used to be true of SU-27, LOMAC and earlier DCS. These days most designers have added so much in radio comms and AI activity that missions are much more alive and interesting and I really don't feel that DCS suffers too much from this. I'm sure there is still plenty of room for growth but I'd rather see it in other areas than those you've suggested. Infact, in many games these sequences you talk about are the kind of thing I'm usually looking to "skip" through.

F-15C Dynamic Campaign: Screaming Eagle

a111r, I don't think losses are the issue as I see similar results but missions continue to generate fine. -
F-15C Dynamic Campaign: Screaming Eagle
John C Flett replied to MBot's topic in User Created Missions General
Broadly working. I've flown four missions but having the same problem as Shein, in three of the four missions the AI didn't attack their ground targets. The only one where they did attack was the first canned mission, otherwise they just seem to fly their waypoint and only seem to deviate if attacked.
