This guy has made a Tornado INS map and display work - it'll answer a lot of questions... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EQqfxiGgd8&t

Very obviously, when you see one close up

Standard 35mm film, but I take your point :D

RAF pilots were sent on a short helicopter course before starting Harrier conversion. I haven't read of any who thought the helicopter course was very relevant, a lot say it was interesting but not a great deal of use. Many new pilots who went onto the Harrier force as their first jet after training found adapting to it easier than pilots who were coming from previous fast jet experience. Make of that what you will :) ------------------------------------ I've found that joystick curves are really dependant on which stick you have and you'll need to experiment. I've flown the Harrier with three different sticks now and each one of them needed different settings. I'm using a Warthog with a Hornet grip at the moment for the Harrier and I find the settings in Chucks Guide are pretty much spot on. But it's all about what works for you. Flying the Harrier well in jet borne flight is tricky at first, which is what makes it fun for me personally.

I'll tell you when mine arrives. I bought one :D

The new composite wing of the Harrier II meant that it was about 60kts slower than the original Harrier, that's a pretty major difference too... I don't know about the cockpit being steampunk, it just comes before the current era of having three touchscreen iPads as your primary displays.... Although some of the instruments were a bit unique, the duct pressure gauge is about the same size as a Euro or £ coin...

I didn't even know it existed, honestly :D

But look at how few people play DCS online. Going by the numbers I'd say the vast majority of people play offline, because if they had to rely on the couple of thousand ( very generous estimate ) of online players for new income ED just wouldn't be able to survive.

What IS the DCS executable as far as Nvidia is concerned ?
-
Over the life of three different computers, with four different video cards, both AMD and Nvidia I have never managed to get any control panel settings - global or local - to apply to DCS. Is it possible ?
-
I've got this issue with a fresh, vanilla install of 2.5.6.43872 - the PC has never had DCS installed before, and there's nothing else on the PC except the operating system and a couple of system utilities. It hangs maybe 60% of the time, and once it has failed to start the only way to get DCS running again is by rebooting the machine. On the PC that I am retiring from DCS useage 2.5.6.43872 starts every time without fail. In fact I can't ever remember DCS crashing or failing to load. The biggest differences between the two machines - if that's got any bearing on whatever's happening are :- Old PC - Intel processor, AMD graphics, Win 7 New PC - AMD processor, Nvidia graphics, Win 10

In multiplayer ( open beta ) I sometimes lose the keybindings for the kneeboard and have the option to bind them again yellowed out. This has been going on for months now, it's unrelated to 2.5.6 Does anyone have a workaround ?

If you are using the joystick library here :- https://github.com/MHeironimus/ArduinoJoystickLibrary/tree/master/Joystick then you can use a Due for your next project. The Due has something like 54 digital I\O pins and maybe 9 analog ones. Nice job BTW

2021 (and earlier) DCS Newsletter Discussion Thread
Extranajero replied to NineLine's topic in DCS 2.9
Is the email newsletter still being sent out ? I haven't received one for ages - it's not appearing in my spam folder or anything like that -
Does anyone know what the 'crew position updates' will actually entail ? I'm building an F-14 simpit and don't want to work on something that is going to be changing later...
-
Ta very much Chuck :)
-
This is what it says in my copy of the guide....has a new one been released ?
-
Exactly... I'm growing increasingly sick and tired of trying to figure out complex aircraft weapons and sensors that are constantly changing, without having up to date documentation. I am looking at you in particular, Hornet and Viper. The systems themselves are hard enough to get the hang of anyway, they remind me of trying to set the clock on a 1980's video recorder :D If we didn't have YouTube creators who take the time to work all this stuff out and produce tutorials then the situation would be even worse. I know its Early Access and all that, but is it really so hard to get someone to add a couple of paragraphs to the existing manual to reflect any changes ? ED seem to be showing a new commitment to communicating with, and listening to their customers and 2020 looks like it's going to be a great year in terms of content. Just a few lines of text in a manual could make a lot of people happy...

ACM panel question for F-14 maintainers\crew
Extranajero replied to Extranajero's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
I think that the ACM pushbuttons are Jay El - photos of the panel show what looks like aluminium where the black finish has worn off the faces, I know that Jay El use aluminium rather than plastic for their buttons That'll be an interesting challenge, fabricating those and making them work... -
ACM panel question for F-14 maintainers\crew
Extranajero replied to Extranajero's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Thanks, the switch action you describe is what I suspect but can't really prove without further input. I know exactly what you mean about the click. The nearest non-aviation switch action to it I have come across is probably the channel and power selector buttons on quality 70's hifi gear. I've got plenty of aerospace type pushbutton switches to choose from - I look for surplus on Ebay and buy whatever I can that's a sensible price, or strip complete cockpit panels down. Some types have a click action, some don't. Recently I bought a small number of Jay El illuminated pushbutton switches - when I decoded the NSN number I found they were produced for the F-16B and the price to the US government was $2.2k per unit :D -
Just finished reading a book on the birth of Top Gun. There was a maneuver which sounds very similar taught to the students as part of the syllabus. It's still difficult to figure out exactly what's going on because the F-4 pilots are describing it in " Hey y'all, we jest kicked on the rudder and hauled back on that there pole " Chuck Yeager type language and explaining it is beyond the abilities of the author.

Thought I'd put this here instead of the home cockpit section. If it's in the wrong place I guess a mod can move it ? I'm building an ACM panel and want everything to be exactly like the original - or as near as I can get it. I've got a question about the 3 pushbuttons for gun rate and missile prep and the missile norm\brst selection. Are they latching switches, or momentary ? if they are momentary do they have still have a click action ? The station occupied\ready indicators look electromechanical. Is that how they operated ? if anyone can help it'll be appreciated.

It's difficult to mount a car in a simpit though.... :D
-
That'll be the path I'm going to take for some of my throttle parts.
-
That wouldn't work. You could 3D print a set of throttles that had a very similar functionality to the Tomcat ones but apart from the grips the mechanism would have to be very different. 3D printing is great but it produces parts which just don't have enough mechanical strength or wear resistance for many applications. The grips though, they are a candidate for printing.
