Which chopper to start with?
CookPassBabtridge replied to CookPassBabtridge's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Thanks man, I'll bear it in mind :) I actually got her through the < 40 kts range tonight, managed the collective and pitch enough to bring it in for a hover landing :) I was WAY off the glideslope, and my dodgy hover skills made for a bit of a rollercoaster 5 feet above the ground, but I did it. It felt rather good :yay: -

One of those complainants is me, in disguise ... :D EDIT: Right I changed a bunch of stuff and tonight , at least, seems to be wobble free. This is for the Huey, probably half of it means nothing, or maybe even all of it :D : 1. Autopilot availability OFF 2. Central Position Trimmer Mode ON (god this is useful, also set the trim reset to my pinky lever) 3. TrackIR aiming OFF 4. User snap view saving OFF 5. Force Feedback OFF 6. Padlock OFF (not that it seemed to do anything in non-oculus mode anyway) 7. Unlimited fuel ON I also went and edited the graphics.lua to: So, yeah. For what its worth, tonight was nice and smooth, no feeling like the chopper was trying to leap backwards from under me. We shall see if it lasts.... -

Not really. I am in my living room and there is only a sofa behind me, plus the lamp I turned off. Its really weird that on Saturday / Sunday it was fine. I'm going to try turning off the LED's on my warthog and keyboard  -

Exactly. It seems odd that there's only a few folks experiencing it. At the moment I am trying to just ignore it. Kinda makes your eyes go funny though lol -
Which chopper to start with?

When learning startups I once let the "throttle idle disengage / starter" button up too soon. The rotors span for a bit, and then merrily removed themselves, parked in front of my cockpit and went "Oh hai" A man told me I was breaking his helicopter. He sounded sad. -
I would agree with the above. I have the Saitek combat rudders and they are nice, but key flaws are that even on the lowest stiffness setting, they are a little too rigid for my liking, which exacerbates their other flaw - they are hard to get them to stay still on a wooden floor! I need to buy a large rubber mat or something.

Is there a separate DK2 problems thread? I am guessing not as there is the impending update... However, the cockpit shaking issue seems to have come back again for me, having thought I had solved it by moving the camera further away and slightly above. It was last night with the Huey, even looking straight forward at the camera its as though the entire cockpit model twitches under me by about 6 inches in a random direction. I found a few other people on the net having the same issue, and its separate to judder which is a stuttering between frames during head movement. In judder, the cockpit model stays still, but there's a lack of sync between the frames each eye sees causing a 'dragging' as the head moves. This shaking however is different and as stated the whole cockpit model is moving and seems especially linked with maneuvering. I had thought it was camera bounds, but it can't be as its happening when facing forwards. Obviously I can't test with another computer though to be sure its not frame rate linked, but I would be surprised if it is as it seems random. I can fly over the same terrain and it will be fine one day, then awful the next. I even experimented with turning the lamp off in my room in case it was confusing the camera or something  Could it be picking up my warthog LED's? I get it whether rift is primary or not in my config, and I am running 0.4.2. Specs below :) -

Which chopper to start with?

Hi Yurgon Thanks for the (classy) reply once again! That is very much what I am hoping for. Its a bit like playing Dark Souls - immensely frustrating until that point when you win! As pointed out above its probably also doubly hard when learning purely from trial and error, rather than having an experienced hand to guide you. That moment you decribe with touching down one skid, thats EXACTLY why I wanted to get into flight sims. Hard work paying off and letting you do something deeply satisfying. "Turning from pain to fun". I will look forward to that! :D -

Wow I am impressed :) I really should join a squadron or something and stop being such an avoidant shut in :cold: I can land the Huey 'on the run' at the moment, with a little skid at the end, it just wouldn't be a comfy touch down for any passengers :D But I'm gonna keep practising proper glideslope landings until I can put it down on the runway numbers!. All you guys have really helped. -

Chaps Just saw the replies this morning and thought I would point out, perhaps to stave off further arguments, earlier in the thread I mentioned I have been moving between the shark AND the Huey, for exactly the reasons mentioned - for a while I thought I was doing something wrong or had setup issues so flew a few landings in the shark. It was of course much easier and I could do a glideslope landing, in order to get the feel for what an "event free" one should feel like. Ultimately its all good experience, and a bit of frustration is not going to put me off flying these lovely helos :) If anything its all the sweeter when it clicks, as Yurgon said :D I also like the idea that this is what pilots of yore would have gone through before getting treated to an uber techno chopper :) I will come back later and read the replies in a bit more detail, thanks again for the input! -

Hehe I know you're right but I'm at minimum settings already lol. Hence why I am thinking of sending rude letters to Nvidia to make them hurry the **** up :D My poor little gaming laptop was quite the champ in his day, but now a bit past his prime  -
Which chopper to start with?
CookPassBabtridge replied to CookPassBabtridge's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Thanks flagrum I will bear that in mind. The biggest issue seems to be the sudden pitch up which leads to huge speed loss, which seems to happen even with the stick forward. I guess its a balance issue. Also should I be setting my warthog sensitivity quite low? At the moment I have quite a curve set to keep it docile near the middle, and it curves up to an x saturation to about 70 (pitch and roll). I think what may be exacerbating the issue is my low frame rate. I am using my oculus to fly (I got used to the judder), and to be honest I need a new rig but nvidia are being slowwwww with new cards. If you are saying that half a second makes a big difference, then it makes sense that I always feel like I am chasing the heli. Everything is at minimum graphics already :D I tried just using the normal monitor and it was tougher. I need some new silicon! -

Oh my god learning to fly the Huey is the most frustrating experience I have had in quite some time. I'm practising landings after partially giving up on hovering, and I am really struggling to keep control during the transitional period where you drop under 40 knots. The video tells you to bleed off speed, increase collective as you drop under 40, and let the stick forward slightly to prevent a sudden decrease in speed, but it seems no matter what I do I suddenly lose a ton of knots and hit VRS. Either that or I increase collective as suggested and just end up not descending / trouble tracking glide slope. I was nearing ragequit level so I thought I would stop and breathe :) When I am less ashamed of my flying I may upload a track. -

Whilst i wouldn't want to put anyone off trying it, and I can understand why people are leery of taking meds, the National Institute of health compiled the results from a number of separate studies and lists ginger as "Possibly not effective" for motion sickness due to the mixed results available. With respects to it being better than meds, one study found it superior to dimenhydrate at reducing stomach related symptoms, but it will not stack up against drugs like cinnarazine or hyoscine for overall motion sickness symptoms of the type found with the rift. By all means try it, as it has arguably less side effects, however if it doesn't work, please don't do what some folks have done and feel like you need to abandon your rift. Acclimitisation to VR can occur very rapidly and there is no reason to believe you will be taking meds for any great length of time. -

I'm not sure, I had read about the transverse flow thing and was looking out for it, so I may not have factored in other inputs. Thanks for the tip, I will try some more take offs and see what happens :D -

Aye, when you start to move forward from a hover :) http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/army/accp/al0966/le3.htm#fig27 Maybe I just didn;t watch close enough, but it seems the Huey rolls LEFT during this phase of flight, whilst the info I am looking at suggests it should be right. I will have to get back in the 'pit and check... -

CookPassBabtridge replied to CookPassBabtridge's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Thank you for responding :) However I don't think that's right for the low speed condition. The manual talks about retreating blade stall happening at high speed, due to the relative wind on the retreating portion of the rotor being reduced (vector subtraction - high forward speed is subtracted from the rotor speed). Transverse flow, the manual happily tootles, happens at low speed as you transition into forward movement due to the rear of the rotor having greater downwash. I think the effect is the same - pitch up and roll, but the causes are different. -

Hehe I have been hearing this a lot :) Though I am thinking a full force feedback cyclic and dedicaited collective is the way to go, I realise I need to spend a STOOPID amount of money to do it :O Where might a gentleman of a stick-y persuasion look for .. a joystick extension (this kind of thing totally is my bag, baby)? All of a sudden my ability to google has evaporated. *goes off to google and stop being lazy*
