Which chopper to start with?
CookPassBabtridge replied to CookPassBabtridge's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
hehe I like that "watch EKRAN" she goes on about. I am assuming Ekran is one of my hilarious pilot buddies who does CRAZY DANCES when he is drunk :) Yeah thats a good point with progressing to the Ka-50, I would really like to feel that sense of technological progress a bit like going from the sabre to the A-10C. Sabre: Nudge nudge nudge nudge trim trim trim trim nudge *look down* SHIT nudge nudge. A-10C - *PING* aahhhhhhh -
Which chopper to start with?
CookPassBabtridge replied to CookPassBabtridge's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
@ Buzzles - do you think learning with the help of AP is a valid way to go, or is it better to go "all me" at first? Though I understand when using the Ka-50 as a standoff 'platform' you will probably be auto-hovering? Is that something that exists on the real one BTW? @ Molevitch - this is the big thing for me. I LIKE hardware, and tend to fritter cash on it quite badly. I have a new rig lined up, a cockpit, maybe even a Cyberith Virtualizer for using with my DK2... if a good, affordable collective / throttle existed out there I would probably buy one straight away, but they all look to be ridiculous money (I know, daft thing to say given previous sentence) in lieu of having the skills to build you own. I've got a HOTAS Warthog, was hoping that would cover all bases... but .. now I have GEAR LUST :D Do you know of any collectives you'd recommend? Also, is a cyclic that different from a joystick, beyond the very long shaft (hehe) ? @ Buznee - that's looking like the way I will go, unless the Ka-50 seduces me again with her high, sleek cockpit lines ;) Once again, amazing replies all round and REPS. I love that so many of you guys have enjoyed this for so many years and still find time for the Black Shark, it makes me feel like my purchases with DCS have been a good investment :) -

Hehe I love this place. You guys are awesome, didn't expect this many replies! Awesome dog is required I will work through the replies as they come up in order on the reply thingy: @ SilentGun - I must admit I hadn't thought about autopilots and all that jazz for helos. Is this something you find yourself using a lot? My aim is to get good at flying first, same as with the A-10C. I have done very little combat as, being new to flight sims in general, I really want to be a good pilot first. What do you find yourself using AP for? @ Raven Morpheus - Wow thanks for all the advice! I remember reading an old flight sim web review of BS and the complexity of the trim system was something that intrigued me. He mentioned that ideally you need a force feedback joystick as this is what you would experience in the heli. Are there any decent ones? I had rather thought my HOTAS Warthog would be pretty universal :) Re: wobbly slew, I am getting used to that in the A-10C with the HOTAS being a bit dodgy. Sounds like transferable skills! In the Huey I am really looking forward to some rocket attacks and watching those lovely fireballs going off, definitely with some Wagner :D @ Gloom Demon - too late, I already bought them all :D Its a case of prioritising which one to play first. I do love an aircraft binge, tastes sooo sweet! I am thinking my (limited) TGP experience in the A-10 will probably be transferable to the BS? @ Home Fries - this is what I am hoping for. I am always a fan of learning "first principles", and knowing why you do something, why its important. I also like the idea that pilots who were used to older style choppers would have got in something like the BS and gone "feck me, this is different". Experiencing that sense of technological progress and powahhhh :chair: @ Rogue Trooper - similar to above, thats what I am hoping for, the "ground up" method! As for piloting a huey through buildings, ever since I saw the Running Man that was on the cards :) : http://www.criticalcommons.org/Members/cmarez/clips/Running_Man.mov/view @ Yurgon - nice to see you again mate :) The thing with the Mi-8 is that with the Rift, having that guy perched over your right shoulder is actually quite creepy lol. But I love the panoramic cockpit and all the russian text everywhere. I can't remember, does the Mi-8 have tutorials yet? @ scrtagnt69 - the second one! My aim is to be good at flying first, and blow stuff up second. I regret not starting YEARS ago with stuff like FSX. I picked DCS as a beginning point very recently because the aircraft are so well modeled and SEXEHHHHH. @ BitMaster - Hehe thanks man. Its a tough call. I played about with the Ka-50 last night and it was quite intoxicating just doing a vertical lift off. I also bought the printed manual! I think I will fire up the Huey though given the long term aspirations. If he doesn;t get my pulse going, maybe I will go back to Sasha (thats what I am going to call her, the Black Shark Betty :) Unless she has a name of course....). "A very powerfull toy" - heh you make a compelling argument! @ Devrim - that is looking like the likely outcome. WOPPA WOPPA WOPPA love that blade sound :) Right, now on to page 1.... -

Oculus Rift and DCS World Discussion
CookPassBabtridge replied to tobaschi's topic in Virtual Reality
There's a chap over on the oculus forums who is quite insistent that if you set to window mode AND you have a 60Hz monitor, that you throttle the DK2 to 60Hz, so you may want to be aware of that as you could get more judder this way. If you have a 75Hz main monitor, you are apparently OK. Don't know myself, I have a 75Hz monitor and a fairly mid range computer so I get a sh*t ton of judder anyway. -
Hi I appreciate I've put this in the Black Shark forum so might get biased answers :) However, I am pretty new to flight simming, have spent some time learning the A-10C, we met, fell in love... taking it slow. But I can't help it. I need some spice, and after I saw several youtube videos of people destroying hundreds of thousands of pounds / dollars worth of helicopters, I thought "that looks hard, I'll try that" :D So recent sale and all, I bought the Huey, Mi-8 and the Black Shark. I want to learn on the most choppery chopper, as in the helicopter that will translate the most to other, 'standard' helicopters. I am guessing this will be the Huey or the Mi-8, rather than the Black Shark and its specialised systems? I amazed myself by actually managing to take off in the ka-50, then I think maybe I was meant to set trim, started wobbling, and then possibly set the engines to idle, because I fell out of the sky. Was pretty awesome whilst I was up there though, especially in the DK2 :) So yeah anyway I am thinking of starting with the Huey, what do you guys think?

Oculus Rift and DCS World Discussion
CookPassBabtridge replied to tobaschi's topic in Virtual Reality
I am finding I really need a zoom function as a noob. I just dropped some cash in the sale, and have new planes to play with, and whilst the Oculus does a pretty good job letting you lean in and see gauges, some of the tinier fonts on side panels can be hard to make out, not to mention sometimes being right at the bounds of headtracking. Its weird when you get that feeling of the cockpit 'sticking to your face' as you move your head back to position! So a zoom ability that lets you look in the general direction of a gauge or switch to actually see what it is would be great. I know I could learn the aircraft on a normal monitor then jump back in, but once you've played DCS in the rift its tough to go back to flat world :) -
Oculus Rift and DCS World Discussion
CookPassBabtridge replied to tobaschi's topic in Virtual Reality
Hmm thats interesting. I was able to reliably repeat it with the Sabre (every time I flew it), which makes me think there is something deeper amiss there. Do you by any chance have the Sabre too? Even better, do you have a DK2? :) -
Oculus Rift and DCS World Discussion
CookPassBabtridge replied to tobaschi's topic in Virtual Reality
I just made a thread about this very thing :) I am only getting it with the Sabre - I start flying, there's no problems at all. Works for about 5 minutes, and then suddenly even with head perfectly centred, no leaning over or anything, the cockpit starts to 'jiggle'. I even checked my camera bounds in demoscene to make sure I wasn't disappearing out the top of the bounds. To further make sure it wasn't my Rift or camera, I loaded up the Warthog. Behaved perfectly, so I am wondering if its only certain aircraft and somehow influenced by the model geometry? I will try out some of the others to see (I recently binged in the sale lol) -
Hi there I wonder if anyone else has found this issue when using the rift with the sabre? I have checked my camera bounds and I am well within them. The flight starts ok, and everything is stable. Then after some maneuvering, the entire cockpit model starts to jiggle. Its a little bit like when TrackIR spazzes out when you get too close to the geometry, except I'm perfectly centred in the middle of the cockpit and camera range. Looking around a bit or recentering with Num Pad 5 makes it stop for a brief moment, but then it returns. As a comparison to see if its my Rift, I am not having the issue with the warthog so it seems to be something to do with the sabre model. Anyone else found this? Babtridge

This would also be great with the Oculus Rift as the resolution isn't good enough to read the radio / tutorial text :) Maybe I shouldn't be trying to learn the Huey in the rift ... :D BUT ITS TOO COOL!

CookPassBabtridge replied to tobaschi's topic in Virtual Reality
This is sorely needed. Given that the DK2 resolution is still not quite up to the task, a zoom is needed to be able to see finer lettering and detail, or simply to help manage looking around the cockpit at the limits of the DK2 camera bounds. -
mouse doesn´t click when running in Oculus Rift Dk2

Hi there Where do you find the full screen option? Is it within DCS or is it windows? :) Thanks! Edit: nvm, found it! Its in the DCS settings. -
DCS DK2 First Impressions
CookPassBabtridge replied to budwheizzah's topic in Screenshots and Videos
Just in case anyone is struggling to get this running, this is the process that works for me. 1. Make sure your regular monitor is primary, with extended mode selected. I had DK1 legacy off, YMMV. 2. Open DCS World, and navigate to the options. 3. Under "System", you should see an option marked "auto detect oculus rift". Check it and OK it. 4. Exit DCS 5. Open the Oculus config tool 6. Go to tools > Advanced > Pause service 7. Keeping your normal monitor as primary, start DCS from the normal steam library page. DCS will open as usual on the normal monitor (believe me its better this way). 8. Start up a mission however you like, I used the mission editor 9. When you click 'fly', it shoul;d automatically switch to the Rift. Goggle up! 10 . Once in the sim, head tracking and mouse cursor movement SHOULD work. If you feel a bit close to the front panel, lean right in and press '5' on the num pad. This should re-centre your view. Now lean back! Unless you have a beast of a machine, you will probably get bad judder due to low frame rate. DCS really needs 75FPS, so if its not smooth you will need to back off a load of settings. Over at the Oculus forums we have guys with 780ti's and overclocked i7's that still can't get smooth 75FPS, especially around towns, but then thats DCS for you :) -
I've been trying to understand this too. Even though the A-10 has SAS, my understanding is its NOT the equivalent of auto-rudder (though you can enable the software solution for it in the menu). However I definitely find that the A-10 behaves much better when rolling, and especially when rolling in on targets, with a little rudder. It cleans up the adverse yaw and that "wobble" you get. Personally it seems to work for me by: 1. Initiating roll and rudder together 2. Allow stick to return to centre. 3. Centre the rudder shortly after. This removes that wobble and annoying drift when lining up for gun runs (as long as you have rolled out level).

Thanks again. I love those build threads, got so much respect for you guys that put these together.

Thanks man :)

This looks nice too. They all seem similar in design.

Ahh man, sold. My hand is soooo close to my wallet right now. If I hadn't just sent payment for a DK2, I'd be ordering right about now :) Sorry to badger you on those MFCD's and all, but would you mind spilling the beans on how you made them?
-
Hi chaps Thanks all for the info, especially RogueSqdn for the illustration! I have the warthog and the same pedals, so it makes it easier to imagine it in my living room :) That seat looks comfy and I will probably never get out of it again. Are there any 'downsides' to speak of? I will be going for centre stick mount, but it will also be good to use the mouse and keyboard tray for normal FPS and surfing etc. How does the desk fare for that kind of use? I will also be investing in triple monitors, which I have heard can be fun to install? Also how did you do your MFCD's? Are there 8" screens behind them or something? If so, did they come from ebay?

Evening I am looking at two potential cockpits for simming, and hoped you guys could offer some experience on the following two likely candidates: 1. Pagnian Next Level Flight Simulator Cockpit 2. Obutto Revolution (Flight Sim setup). The Revolution looks like its better specced, but the chair and finishing on the Pagnian is very nice. Anyone tried out either? The Pagnian seems to have a dearth of information on it, but the revolution looks quite popular. For the setup I want, the Obutto comes out about £80 more so its not much of a difference. As well as racing, I will be playing A-10C / DCS and want to mount my TM HOTAS Warthog on them, I believe they are both accommodating to it :)

Howdy P.Funk :) Seems odd to be talking to you when there isn't a plushie / Flare Path Foxer at the top of the screen. I guess its probably been discussed to death elsewhere, but that coloring book is a fake right? Because if not, my dream of becoming an A-10 pilot may still be alive! Colouring stuff in ... that s*it is ON MY LEVEL :D No matter whether real or not, its got some good info in it. I may actually print that off and colour them in. -
Anyone help out with this warthog footage?
CookPassBabtridge replied to CookPassBabtridge's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
 Just when I thought the epicosity of the responses had reached a natural inflexion, the thread goes exponential :yay: Thanks so much for posting those. Was the pilot in the nellis AFB video doing a combination of all of those? It must be very difficult to fly the aircraft like that, looks like its protesting quite a lot! In fact I was just about to ask how close to the stall you were in those pitch-up maneuvers, and then heard the warning in the background of some. I was learning about maximum sustained turning performance here http://kriegsimulation.blogspot.co.uk/2011/01/dcs-10c-warthog-210-kias-speed-to.html just recently. I wonder if maximum pitch-up performance is similarly governed? Thanks again, that's another one for my subs list :) -
Anyone help out with this warthog footage?
CookPassBabtridge replied to CookPassBabtridge's topic in DCS: A-10C Warthog
I'm sure others here will give a more detailed response, but judging by the general theme of the replies I would imagine that "because it looks good" was a large part of it. The climbing maneuver looks better from the side than a horizontal maneuver, giving a better impression of speed? Its a cool video though. Captain Shedderley fanclub anyone? :notworthy:
