Which chopper to start with?
CookPassBabtridge replied to CookPassBabtridge's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
Actually I do have a question about the Huey, would be good to get an experienced ear on it! In the manual it talks about transverse flow happening when you first start moving, and that it leads to an extra downforce on the rear of the rotor disc. It says that gyroscopic precession leads to a roll "sidewards" as a result, plus pitch up tendency, which all makes sense. However in the game, the roll is to the left, but the Huey has counterclockwise blade rotation. As far as I understand it, in a gyroscope, an applied force is felt 90 degrees to its application point and in the direction of rotation, so the roll should be to the RIGHT, not the left. Have I missed something here, or is the model a bit off? :smartass: -

heh heh yeah I know what you mean. I am bouncing between the two as I go, to compare "without panic" and "with panic" :D -

Thanks Wild Bill, yeah I have jumped in with the Huey, but actually found myself ricocheting around a bit with the 'shark. I am finding its actually helpful to fly the Huey, struggle with stuff like transverse flow affecting landing, and then switch to the shark for a panic-free version of the same maneuver :) Sort of like a learning-with-water-wings approach after being chucked in the deep end once or twice! I am going to practice VFR glide-slope type landings with the shark to at least get the technique down as I am new to simming in general, then switch back to the Huey to learn how to cope with her .... idiosyncrasies :D -

I would actually love a proper cyclic and collective, but I know I am going to spending about $1000 to do it. I wish thrustmaster would do a deal and make a black shark setup, it would be awesome. -

Talking to the guys over at the oculus forums, apparently DCS doesn't play nice with SLI at the moment without lots of tweaking (AFAIK). A few of them have got 780ti's and still come up against judder especially over towns where the frame rate dips. The old "DCS is CPU limited" probably factors in here too, so if you have a 4.6GHz monster you will probably do better with that. -

Hmm thats odd :( I actually have my normal monitor as primary (my main is 75Hz so I don't run into the "refresh rate inheritance" issue), services paused (not stopped), and then the rift auto-starts when I begin a mission. Menus etc all run on my main monitor. -

In the rift you should have full head tracking as in the video. Have you paused the Oculus service in the config tool? Thats one cause of losing head tracking. -

Games like first person shooters that feature a lot of strafing are especially powerful sickness inducers in the rift, because the movements are unnatural. Your brain expects an associated g-force on your body and vestibular system (a trip down the the oool' ear canal :D ) and of course you don't get any, seated in your study / bedroom etc. Its the opposite of motion sickness, where your eyes say "no movement" and your vestibular system says "I'm rockin' about like an angry colt". Half Life 2 is really bad for this because of its "ice skating" effect. If you suddenly backpedal from an enemy, it feels like someone just squeezed your brain, and after a while you start to feel cold, sweaty and sick. Games that feature less pronounced or fewer unnatural movements are less sickness inducing, as are games which 'ground' your view in some way such as a cockpit. If you then add quality of head tracking and amount of judder into the mix, there are a lot of variables, including your own physiology and even expectation of feeling sick, which affect whether you will feel it. I highly doubt that colours will impact sickness, though it may be possible to run into the "conditioned reaction" effect in that nausea paired with some stimulus, as in classical conditioning, means that the presentation of that stimulus leads to nausea. Many, many games of recent years went through a "dusted with cocoa" artistic phase, so it may be that the sickness-inducing limited FOV usually found in console-originated video games, plus the frequent brown hue, has lead to the sick feeling being classically conditioned to brown colours. Hare brained theory? Maybe :D Personally I have a stash of over the counter motion sickness meds on hand - they got me through the first few days and now I have my "VR legs" I am fine. DCS only made me feel ill when I went inverted anyway, and now even thats OK. Get through the first few days, use meds to avoid the conditioning effect, and by then you should have adapted enough to not have sickness. -
Hehe talking to myself but in case anyone else comes looking with the same issue: It seems that DCS is fussier with camera bounds than other VR apps, and I experimented with putting the camera up higher and further back, with the lens aimed at my chest. Its now about 2 feet above me and about 5 feet away. This seems to have cleared up pretty much all of the jiggle - black shark is rock solid, Huey too. Only the Sabre seems to have the occasional twitch, usually at the end of a head movement COMBINED with maneuvering. Its as though the game is having trouble resolving all the movement and momentarily goes into a spasm. Frame rate seems fine at the time so to me this is more a camera bounds problem. Letting it 'see' more seems to be the answer.

With the cockpit jiggle / twitch, I've played about with this a little more and it seems that DCS is just fussier with camera bounds than other games / apps. I have moved my camera so it is about 2 feet above me, and about 5 feet away (thankyou, step ladder), with the lens pointing roughly at my chest. This seems to make the most of the tracking zone and has made all the models less twitchy. When it does happen it seems to be at the 'end' of a head movement - e.g. looking out across a wing when banking, then looking back to the front panel, I will get a couple of twitches, or vice versa. It seems to be linked with maneuvering especially, as though its having trouble resolving the head position and the new attitude of the aircraft. So I still get the occasional flutter in the Sabre which seems to be the worst for it, but the Ka-50 and Huey, at least for now, seem to be rock solid. Haven't gone back to the A-10C to check but it was fine before. -

Hi there How long have you had your DK2? I was bad at first but after a few weeks I get no issues at all. There is deifnitely an adjustment phase. At first I was Mr SUPERHURK, so I bought some OTC travel sickness meds to get me through the first three of four days. After that I was fine with everything except Half Life 2, which is THE HURK-O-TRON :D -

Let me know if you find out! :) I've found it impossible to see the numbers using in-game or FRAPS. Another good thing to do to set off weird reactions is to go to external view at a few thousand feet, so you're just behind a wing or something. Then look down with your head! If you get it right it sets off the same feeling you get as you're about to skydive :D -

Anybody else getting the THE JIGGLE? :( This is another user's video, but I get the same thing in certain birds. A-10C seems immune, Sabre, Ka-50 and Huey have it in decreasingly-bad order (sabre is jiggle city). Its not camera bounds as you can get it when perfectly centred (though this guy doesn't appear to), and its not 'judder' as only the cockpit wobbles. You can be on the tarmac and its still, while the 'pit jiggles away. Anyone found a fix? EDIT: Actually the more I look at that vid, the more it does look like camera bounds. I think my issue is different as I get it when looking forward and camera facing right at me. -

@ Yurgon - haha that's cool. Going on my first experiences with the Huey, I can well see why they want to do so much flying. Good god she's a grumpy old mare isn't she? :) HOVERING. Good lord I have never concentrated so much in my life! And navigating around VRS, transverse flow and retreating blade stall, I've learnt a hell of a lot just in a couple of days, more than A-10C at this stage thats for sure. Going from that to a heli that does it all for you, must feel kind of odd :D @ scrtagnt69 - thanks! It REALLY feels like a challenge to do even the simplest things in this bird, but such a sense of achievement when you do something successfuly. Even getting it to hover in ground effect and staying above the same bloody spot, and managing to taxi in a straight line... not very good at the former, ok at the latter. Time to start bingeing on YouTube video tutorials :book: -

Yes that all makes sense, I guess its the same as with the A-10C and creating as stable a platform as possible. It also helps when that platform has a high badassery quotient :) You probably get asked this all the time, but how did you get all the badges? They are pretty sweet. Babtridge -

Thanks again chaps :) So I had my first trip in the Huey. I did my usual - run through the guided startup routine, get told that's the end, THEN TAKE OFF ANYWAY:devil: It took bloody ages to figure out the start button is keyboard-only, hunted all round the cockpit for about half an hour, and of course as I was doing it in the rift I couldn't read the instructions :) I remapped the starter as the ENG OPER IGN - R switch on my warthog throttle instead. So I managed to get it in the air, I flew around a bit, WOW is it ever good in the rift. The sense of altitude and movement is amazing even on my rather underpowered rig. I think I used the force trim button right - do you press it to make it remember your current setting or something? Then I tried to land :) Bled off speed, canceled the rotation with some rudder, then wasn't sure if I should be decreasing collective or throttle to descend. Whatever I did, it was wrong because I bounced it off a very low detail building, making nice fireball colours, and this upset a man who said "You're breaking my helicopter" :( Sad times. Then it punished me by incurring a fear of heights reaction by teleporting me to an above-plane view of a C-130 (?). Seriously brings back skydiving-type feelings when it does that, awesome. They should make a skydiving sim in the rift. My rudders seem to jitter too, like holding them to the left and they are springing back right on their own, making the Huey wobble. Thats odd. Going to update my drivers I think. Anyway first encounter was really good fun, some part of my brain THINKS it might quickly get the hang of it. Another part is laughing at that part :D Can you turn the other pilot off? He tanks my frame rate in the rift for some reason.
