I find it tough to fly DCS without VR
SinusoidDelta replied to Johnny Dioxin's topic in Virtual Reality
I tried flying with TrackIR again recently and found it much more difficult than I'd remembered. Without VR I'm very, very bad at formation or A2A refueling. Simple things like sustained level turns require way more attention with TrackIR. My only complaint is still model visibility in VR. At close range, maybe <5nm it's not an issue. For BFM or formation work it's a huge benefit. Trying to identify aircraft beyond that is almost impossible. The model simply disappears after a certain distance. With TIR and the unrealistic amount of zoom available you can spot much further out. In that regard it's a pretty big disadvantage using VR in MP combat. -
You can probably find a better scan of the manual. Mine is pretty bad.

Found this in the -1. It may be what you're looking for:

FWIW here's some screenshots from the the F-15 general orientation manual

+1 for SS ...and everything else that's either missing or inaccurate compared to the -34-1-3

It'd be nice if they added a thermal limit to how long you can have ECM engaged and a longer cool period before using again.

You can guesstimate if the target is hot/cold as the intensity of the strobe goes up as you get close. If they are flanking you'll sometimes see what looks like multiple HOJ tracks if you aren't locking the strobe. I've tried a lot of HOJ slammer launches at high alt/speed and have yet to score a kill.
-
Do the AP switches in front of the throttle quandrant move?
-
That's a hell of a shot. What speed and alt did you launch at? Was the bandit a ground pounder?

I see, for pitching moments and such  The rest of this post are just my thoughts from observing this thread, not directed at you GG In DCS, immediately after launch, missiles almost always make nonsensical energy depleting maneuvers. The code is is trying to navigate proportionally but the commanded maneuvers result in a negative feedback loop, As an observer its a fairly straight forward problem. Inaccurate state estimation, and inaccurate control command/response. I honestly think many of these issues could be fixed with some fundamental engineering techniques with respect to missile design even if not explicitly known to be used in a particular missile. Most fundamentals for modern control systems have been publicly known since the 1970's, such as Kalman filters ( or 1930's IIRC for the monte-carlo method). Recursive calculations of matrices such as covariance or kalman gain use a negligible amounts of computing power. With the exception of lag/network issues, the absolute state of any target in the ME environment is always known. Sparing the details, the most challenging engineering problems in missile design don't exist here in DCS. I would say it's reasonable to think missiles in such a simulation would outperform consistently compared to real life. Frankly, I'm still baffled DCS missiles perform this badly and have not improved. I'm starting to lose hope that they will.

What are you posting in reference to? And outdated compared to what?

To clarify regarding English Bias - Maybe someone more knowledgeable than myself can comment if this has any relevance to this discussion. Note the commment about accelerating laterally.

I need to take a close look at the track files still. We have almost no idea how ED guiding or controlling the missile. The game isn't performing a total multiphysics simulation. From where we are we know little to nothing about how ED is simulating the process. What we do seems....basic. I need to watch the tracks in detail again but the first thing that comes to mind is english-bias of lack therof.

Your fav tactics against Su-27 in a merge ?
SinusoidDelta replied to PrototypeBayu8's topic in F-15C for DCS World
I just hopped on the 104th a few days ago after a long absence. I managed to kill a somewhat unsuspecting flanker from 24nm. Then DCS crashed while I was trying to land. No track, no tacview... Loaded up again, DCS crashed again before I could even take off. Ugh... -
F-15 still pulling 14G with two bags and no damage
SinusoidDelta replied to JunMcKill's topic in F-15C for DCS World
1) Amen. 2) Not sure about that, look on page 47 of Eagle Talk Part 2 regarding pitching moment. 3) Not an easy task but there are some rough guesses as to failure modes but modeling deformation effects such as airframe bending would be very difficult. -
Right. In a knife-edge the lift vector is pointed in the horizontal direction, forward stick pressure keeps the flight path straight. Top rudder (i.e., the top or highest rudder pedal when in the bank) generates the yaw force and side slip to hold the velocity vector above the horizon.

As it stands its an issue as old as DCS itself. There are so many threads discussing this exact subject yet it remains a hot topic. GGtharos has said ED hired someone who eventually rework the missile models but no time frame yet that I'm aware of.
-
I watched it. An enourmous amount of chaff has already been released by the time the closer missiles are fired. Just a thought.
-
Who said they're afraid? Honestly I wouldn't expect any missile in DCS to hit at the ranges in those videos. Does the result change if you decrease launch distance?
-
No problem! In my opinion the maneuver doesn't look quite right when performed in DCS compared to videos from air shows but it certainly do-able.

Here is how the F-15C demonstration team performed the knife edge pass

Modelled AIM-54 effect on a typical DCS PvP server
SinusoidDelta replied to Pikey's topic in DCS: F-14A & B
Regarding real life tactics, there's this excerpt from the book Eagle Engaged by Steve Davies: I'm pretty sure this is the type of discussion the OP said he did not want. -

Start by creating a smaller engagement, 2v1 then 2v2. Most of the facts in this book apply: http://www.scaredscriptless.com/images/jason/Star-Citizen/ACM/Fighter%20Combat%20-%20Tactics%20and%20Maneuvering.pdf Also, you aren't going to get hits firing at 10nm unless you are very high and very fast. Think more like < 6nm. Firing a spoiler shot from > 6nm can force the bandit defensive which may or may not be advantageous. -
I think the gripless option is more aimed towards those of us who already own a VKB stick and just want to upgrade the base.

Obviously it depends what type of engagement. If your hypothetical question allows AIM-120C's and and radar contact at 20nm then the same as vs any aircraft. Come in very high, very fast, gimballed left/right, at 10+ miles center the dot, double tap and crank.
