Spinning the Spit (and other warbirds)
OnlyforDCS replied to philstyle's topic in DCS: Spitfire L.F. Mk. IX
Of course it's in beta, but I've been here since before the Mustang days. Yo-Yo's FMs have always been pretty much feature complete by the beta phase. Yes things have been improved upon, some changed, and there could very well be a bug. But I don't think this is the case. I can pretty much initiate every spin in the Spitfire, though it comes out of some them easier then it does others, and some are very HARD to get into intentionally. The OP's original post claims that he can not enter spins, that there is something wrong with the FM based on his experience. I am stating the opposite, spins are possible, and not even that, but the aircraft behaves differently in different spins. To me this shows signs of a mature and well behaved flight model. Besides spin behavior is the first thing they test when they do test flight models, before we even get our hands on the modules. (I am talking about Eagle Dynamics here, not third party developers). -

The WWII warbirds are inherently all very stable aircraft, with straight very high lifting wings. The Spitfire in particular has a very high critical angle of attack. I personally don't think the modelling is wrong. *edit* Phil, what type of spin is talked about in the excerpt you provided there? It seems to start halfway through? The corkscrew spin I did yesterday required centering the stick, adding power, and applying reverse pedal. -

Has anyone tried to do an inverted flat spin? Im pretty sure that it happened to me in the Spit on at least one ocassion. If entered in specific conditions it is very hard to recover from that one. Will try and do one today. -
Yeah the Viggen's textures look beyond this world in PBR. I hope the other developers are on their ballgame and give us proper skins for Nevada and Normandy in 2.1 for their respective modules.

Look at the date. It's 2013. Almost four years ago. In the meantime several new laws were enacted in Russia, which I can't go into more detail here on the forum, so as not to break any forum rules. Suffice to say that it is almost impossible for Eagle Dynamics to now develop and publish any new module of a jet that is still in service with the Russian airforce. Even if it does get permission from the MoD.

What is an insipid spin? Doesn't the example in the video Bounder posted qualify as a self sustaining spin stall? -

Ok just tried it at home. Free flight mission, Nevada. (for kicks) Altitude somewhere above 10k feet. Managed to get into a corckscrew spin on the first try from level flight. Though the Spit seems very, very resistant to it. I needed full right stick deflection and full left rudder, then switched to full right rudder to get it to spin. As soon as I centered the controls and applied opposite rudder and added power I managed to get out of the spin, though it was pretty close to the ground by then. It's actually amazing how much lift those big wings provide, and how high the critical AoA of the Spit is. No wonder it is one of the best turnfighters of the war. It really needs very, very little airflow over the wing to provide lift. -
This improvement (like many others) has to wait for the merge. There was simply no sense in implementing it in one engine, and then doing it all over again (with all the testing that requires) in a completely different engine. This is why the merge is such a big deal. (Apart from the obvious graphical upgrades and multiple theater support)

But you did manage to get it into a spin first? Centering controls usually does the trick (depending on the type of spin). Remember most joysticks have a centering spring, something that the real airplane controls don't have. -

Yeah thats what I meant, the classic spin stall. The Spitfire might be naturally resistant to entering the spin. But Im sure I've done it a few times. Ill try and reproduce today after work and report back. -

You tried stalling that bird before you changed your settings? Maybe they changed something in the flight model. I will try and stall her today and report back. -
I hope that's the case. Supporting multiple branches for 2+ years was probably a logistical nightmare, and as a user it was a hassle and at one time even made me quit DCS. (To wait for the merge)

So, how are you going about doing that? I find it's pretty easy to put any aircraft in DCS into a spin. Pull the throttle to idle, and try and keep the nose level with the horizon by slowly pulling the stick back as the speed drops. Start slowly applying left or right rudder, all the while keeping the nose on the horizon with liberal aielron use. That should pretty much do it. Im thinking that maybe you're not having enough surface control authority with all of that saturation you are using with your config. -
I for one will fly Normandy and Nevada from 2.1 until the 2.5 merge. Depending on server viability, missions, bugs, etc. of course. Im mostly flying WWII stuff now anyway. If the merge is delayed again, or is a long time in coming, then I guess Ill be back to 1.5 to get a fix of modern jet combat, unless there are some decent servers on 2.1, as it seems most of the DCS userbase is quite happy where it is.

I suspect that the community of DCS would be a lot larger than it is at the moment had the "merge" already happened. Eagle Dynamics has to support three different branches of their "base" product, while at the same time creating new content, modules, and supporting third party development. This is no doubt very difficult, time consuming and frustrating, however it was in all probability necessary. I doubt it was by their intentional design that they painted themselves into this corner. It also means that many improvements and bug fixes that they probably already have in the pipeline also need to wait. This is why I will breathe a huge sigh of relief next friday, if everything goes according to plan and they get 2.1 out the door. It's of course the prelude to 2.5 but I suspect a vast majority of DCS WWII users will shift to the Alpha branch, which will sort of become a beta test of what is to come and ED can shift all their energy and focus on getting to the merge.

Out of control after repair
OnlyforDCS replied to BitMaster's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
It's been a while since I flew the Hip, but Im assuming that it's an issue with the automatic start up, and shut down procedures, and the AP box. Im guessing something in the automatic shut-down procedure script is not working properly and as a result the AP is not being initialized or reset correctly. It can be a hassle but you should really take the time to learn the start-up and shut down procedures of the Mi-8 -
It got easier because you got better. Thats the way it works :) I used to think the Spit's landings were impossibly difficult. Im nailing them now, and find her to be one of the easiest planes to bring down safely.

What was your old resolution? If it was 1080p start with the same settings as before, but drop the MSAA to 2x or even to OFF. Then adjust and lower the other settings as necessary.
-
What do you mean, how did it get easier? Take offs? Landings? ACM?
-
Wait what???!!!! Are you telling me they are delaying the Merge AGAIN? Where did you hear this?
-
I don't fly the Su-33 or the Mig29 because there is no PFM. I have absolutely zero interest in flying SFM aircraft. I would like to though. The Su33 in combination with carrier operations would probably be a blast. The Fulcrum is my favorite Soviet designed and built fighter aircraft.
-
Im sorry, but can you please explain what you are on about? ED has stated that the merge will happen in 2.5, after the work on Caucassus is complete.
-
That's not gonna happen for a while yet.
-
Dropping the RPM while maintaining the same manifold pressure will not result in an increase of power. However when flying straight and level it might result in more efficient cooling of the engine, which would result in the radiators closing, which would lead to better aerodynamics and a faster speed.

He is only half wrong...So far. 2.1 might still drop today.
