  1. I flew a mission earlier after turning the motion smoothing on - was previously off - but didn't notice any side-effects or other issues. I also flew a bit in v1.5.8 and the performance was excellent with Index. The only thing I don't like (with any version of DCS World) is that it boots up Oculus Home. So I have SteamVR (which boots up Steam itself) and Oculus Home, all taking up precious resources. I could have a try at using OpenVR, but DCS still boots up Home - guess I could see if I can just switch it off. I used openVR for other SteamVR based sims and it works well - don't know how it goes with DCS World but hope to find out this evening.
  2. Sorry to hear about your issues - when it works as it should it's great. Just those niggling things and in your case, faults that mean a new headset required. At least you have the Rift S to keep you going if you have to be without the Index for a while. I had that double object problem before, but in the CV1. Can't remember the exact circumstances, wasn't long ago - but it's gone now. Hope you get your issues sorted. btw I upped my refresh rate to 120Hz earlier today, but didn't notice any difference from 90. Also tried 80Hz, but things got a little blurry. I increased the resolution as well, and am about to see what that looks like. btw - one of my lighthouses makes a loud whining sound, too, audible over my fan as well. I don't mind it so much when in VR - but I have the sensors and headset all plugged into one multi-socket extension and when not in VR I just switch off the power. Sorted.
  3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49141421 Good thing = they probably knew nothing about it. Hard to get your head around stuff like this - face all the dangers, survive the enemy and then fall to something like this. :(
  4. I agree - and just got the mail that my replacement switch (from the delivery damage) is on its way.
  5. Just ordered the WidmoVR prescription lenses (74 Euro/£69) - I'll report back on how I find them. I've been using the VR Lens headband version so far - but I'm not doing so well with them, comfort and fogging-wise, in the Index. The fixed VR Lens Labs ones I had for CV1 were excellent.
  6. The advantage here being, Amazon are very good for refunds. If it turns out that way (refurbs being sold) it's easy to get your money back ;)
  7. Yes, I can't see too many people thinking the Rift S is a better overall headset than the Index, issues aside of course. Price is another matter, and whether it's worth what's asked. I am not by any means well off, but I put aside the cash for the Index as soon as I heard it was being released, even though at that time I didn't know if I would be getting one. I definitely don't feel that it's too much, now I have one. I had to forgo several other things in order to buy it. I've been trying out several titles and sims and I have to say, it's been very impressive. I also like the controllers, although there is one thing I don't like, which is the positioning of the UI switch (which is also used to activate the controllers). Using them in shooters that have been optimised for Knuckles is great fun and much more intuitive than Touch - which is still my favourite due to comfort and not being able to accidentally press things that will make me die repeatedly! Unfortunately, as with CV1 - DCS World 2.5 is the exception as far as performance goes. I'm hoping to give 1.5.8 a try later today and see how it goes, just for reference. I'd prefer to have 2.5 running like 1.5.8 did in VR, but I think that's a way off, if it will ever be possible. I also finally saw some nasty glare - probably what nrosko was talking about. However, I only get it in high-contrast situations, i.e. menus. Black background with white text gives very bad glare around the lens and if this was the normal state of play and a fix wasn't readily available, my headset would be being returned. However, white on black menus are the only time I see glare - the rest of the time, it's not apparent at all. I saw someone on a VR forum who was going to return their Index due to unacceptable glare - but after a couple of weeks, they had a play around adjusting the fit, and it disappeared. They ended up keeping it. When I had a CV1 I really couldn't understand all the nay-saying about gauges and how impossible they were to read without zooming or leaning in, because I just did not have that problem. The only cockpits I had trouble reading in VR were ones I had trouble reading on a monitor screen. I put that down to fit adjustment, as well. I also use prescription lenses, which may account for it a bit, too, as they probably magnify the image somewhat. What I would say, in summary, is if you have been concerned about the horror stories and so-on about the Index and have been holding back - just go for it. You can always send it back if you don't like it, but believe me, it's a great headset and well worth trying out.
  8. @Gunnergolly - if my hardware was a bit more potent, I would probably have bought a Reverb, too, but that was what discounted it for me. It's difficult to comment accurately on the spotting - but when I started the Hornet A/A Radar Qualification mission I had no issues at all spotting the aircraft I was supposed to find and lock up on the radar. I didn't think about it at the time, as I was just looking at the framerates, but yes, it was better than I remember on the CV1, but I can't say about S because I didn't do any air to air missions when I had the S. At that time I had a mod installed, anyway, to make spotting easier - now I have a clean 2.5.5 install, so even better for the Index spotting. @Digital Engine - yup, fully understand that. Having tried and tested two of the headsets this year, I was really keen to see something that was up to snuff - so there was no way I was letting the Index pass me by without having a go. But for each one, it was always my intention to just buy first, use the time available to test and see if I wanted to keep or return and then go from there. That's the good thing these days - you can buy without worrying you'll end up with a dud. So far tried this with my Index: 1: Test multiple VR apps/games - so far: DCS World 2.5.5 release; Arizona Sunshie; Pinball FX2 VR; 2: Different USB3 socket/hub (from Inatek to Mobo port and back when no change)) 3: Checked Steam & SteamVR for updates - none 4: Enable SteamVR Beta - *later updated to 1.6.8 5: Headset firmware updated (new update) 6: Different display port output (didn't work first attempt) 7: Motion smoothing on & off 8: Uninstall driver with DDU & reinstall v431.60 9: Uninstall v431.60 with DDU & install v430..86 10: Run GPU at standard clock rates. 11: Verify SteamVR 12: Uninstall (clean/complete) SteamVR and Reinstall 13: Swap graphics card It's still there, and still very obvious. I've sent support a report and will wait to see what they have to say. I'll keep using it while I wait :)
  9. Alec, I'm really hoping that I will be able to sort the issue somehow. As it's not something that is happening 100% of the time, maybe a tweak somewhere will allow it to be resolved. I've been keeping my eye on the Index thread of the Oculus forum - and there's a guy there who has had this issue really badly since he got his Index - then yesterday when he started up, it had vanished and hasn't come back since. Fingers crossed. I would try a complete clean out and reinstall and every possible combination of inputs and settings before giving up. edit: Sorry, I forgot - @Gunnergolly - I would definitely recommend the Index over the Rift S, as long as the Index is one that works as intended, of course. The extra FoV for my IPD - horizontal and vertical - and the less noticable SDE (not the issue I'm having) would easily swing it. I would say the only point where the Rift S comes out on top - unless you are determined on inside-out tracking/simplicity of set-up - is the weight. The Index feels very heavy in comparison to Rift S and CV1, but it is supported well by the headstraps. I hear that the Index with the Vive Deluxe Audio strap is excellent.
  10. I had a spare half hour this morning, so thought I'd just double check on that vertical lines issue. I definitely have it, unfortunately. It comes and goes all the time, persistently. I tried to capture it through the lens - didn't really succeed, but uploaded the video anyway - I'll keep doing these types of videos and see if I can get a decent recording at some stage. Thing is, without the vertical lines, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Index for DCS World, it's just incredible, imho. Wish I had the money to buy better hardware to run it to full capacity - but that will come, eventually :) I've only just uploaded the vid, so it may take a while to get to HD.
  11. Probably - just meaning it regarding what's clear in my own headset. I did notice these things in Rift CV1, too - but they never bothered me. If VR was decade or more old technology it would be a different story, but I see many complaints about things I consider par for the course on new technology. In this case, it will probably depend heavily on the exact situation, too (i.e. mission area, time of day, etc etc). So far I've not noticed any glare worth getting worked up about in my headset (only tried Steam Home and DCS World).
  12. I think I've found what the problem is, regarding the SDE - found this on Reddit (attached as it's someone else's screenshot/post) I have what it shows on the right - but not continually, it goes in and out all the time. Think I need to get in touch with support, just in case.
  13. Well, thanks for the tips - I hope the humidity here drops off enough tomorrow to spend some serious time trying things out. When I left it today, the framerate was solid at 45fps - but this was with little going on and I'm sure once the explosions and multiple entities start coming into the picture, things would get slow again. I seem to remember someone somewhere saying that motion smoothing should be set to off and I think mine is on, so that will get switched as well. The rendered resolution for the headset was shown as 2016x2240 in SteamVR. Whether it stayed at this whilst DCS was running, I don't know. I meant to have a look at this data display for VR but forgot, so I'll add that to the list for tomorrow. Oh - while I remember - I didn't notice any gare at all in the lenses - two missions were daytime, one was evening. The F/A-18C cockpit was okay (seems to have a contrast issue and I couldn't get a satisfactory result) - pretty similar to what I saw in the Rift S, and the Su-25 cockpit was very impressive in both. Once I had the contrast sorted in the AV-8 it looked fantastic. The SDE was most obvious in the Hornet, again, probably due to the contrast or lighting not being optimum. There was also an issue - couldn't work out if it was SDE or possibly mura, if I've correctly understood what that looks like, whilst looking out of the Hornet canopy. Like a smudge moving around as my head moved.
  14. Okay got up in the air - good news, bad news. I wrote recently in the Rift CV1 thread, about how fantastic the performance was - to my amazement - with the Su-25 A/A mission in the Persian Gulf. It's a 1v1 dogfight mission over Dubai. I thought it would be a good idea to start off with that mission, as it was freshest in my mind for comparison. It was dire. Really, it was very stuttery and the SDE was annoying me. The internal framerate counter showed 20fps. I jumped into the AV-8BNA Pleasure Flight mission. Like many missions made by the devs or their sub-contractors, there is lots of AI around, which can drag performance down in VR. It was a nightmare. Complete stutterfest, lots of warping and that awful SDE again. FPS was struggling around 20 again. I stuttered around to the runway and took off. Once I got to over 2,000ft the framerates improved to 30ish, but there was lots of warping with ground objects. I loaded up the Hornet air radar quali mission over Dubai (at FL200) and that ran a lot better - but still not that good, and yes - that SDE was bothering me again. However, I also noticed that it was an intermittent thing. I could sit and stare at the same piece of desert - or cockpit - and see the SDE clear as a pattern painted over it - then it would vanish. In a few seconds it would be back. Confusing - but a couple of possible explanations. Anyway, frames were still reported as 20fps. So I went to the settings. Reduced lotsa stuff. I'd had the ground clutter at zero anyway, but I reduced the detail radius from maximum to 10,000. I switched off all MSAA (had been on x4) and AF (had been on x16), that cockpit light setting was switched off, and the water quality reduced from medium to low. I also reduced the in-game IPD from 1.5 to 1.1 What a difference! Okay, the FPS was 'only' 45 now - but it was a rock solid 45fps through all those missions again. I don't get why that SDE is bothering me so much. It's far better than the CV1, but for some reason it's really nagging at me all the time. So - yes, it's great (and I also altered the FoV to min and back to max - didn't make a massive difference, but max is better cos it feels more natural). But settings will have to be tweaked. I overclocked my 2060 yesterday in prep for this - but it obviously isn't enough. If you have a 2080 or Ti you're going to love it, and probably with a 1080Ti, too. I can't afford those, but I'm happy enough. End settings (not very clear, unfortunately):
  15. Okay - I went for it and soooo glad I did! :D When I tried Rift S I was a little excited at what might be, and felt a little deflated at the set-up process. It was very easy - so it didn't feel like anything special. I wasn't convinced about Touch v2 and so wasn't excited about that, either. The image was so much better than CV1, I was pleased. SDE was visible, but not overtly so, so no worries. The FoV, however, was dismal. In CV1 it was like looking through a large letterbox but in S it was like squished binoculars (and not the TV version!), like the Oculus logo, vertical. Another thing I didn't like was the fitting - when I set it so it wouldn't move when I turned my head, it was actually a bit painfull (actually I have a tender skull at the rear due to wearing a CPAP mask every night, so this is an individual thing, but CV1 doesn't give me problems with it). The FoV and the dreadful audio was a game breaker and it went back. Quest came next. This was very impressive - although it felt a lot heavier. Unfortunately, though, it didn't like my wifi set up and it went back, too. Though it was noticably heavier, it was fairly comfy, and definitely comfier than the S. I know many people like the S headstrap, but I don't. Now comes the Index. Here it is: O :shocking: M F G !!!! Now this feels like an upgrade :D I pronounce myself extremely happy and most content! I immediately noticed just how heavy it is - far more than any headset up to now - but once it was sorted (and I spent a lot of time getting it just right) it was less obvious and once I was in VR I forgot about it. Set up was a bit of a PITA, but not much worse than CV1 - especially as, after a successful firmware update, the left controller lost all tracking. I could see my hand in VR and could see my individual fingers moving accurately, but the controller was stuck in place. A reboot of SteamVR seemed to fix that. I normally wear prescription lenses and bought some with a headband for use with the Index - but even without them the image just takes my breath away. I'm having an issue with DCS World, where the GUI is just not showing up - so all I've seen so far is the inside of the hangar, with the Flanker sat there looking all sexy and tempting. So no flight report as yet. The SDE, again, is definitely visible, but it's so fine it really is not an issue of any kind and is only noticable on light surfaces - and then only if you want to see it. So I will try and get the GUI up and spend the afternoon testing and report back. In SteamVR home it looked awesomely clear and bright and - "washed out colours"? Nope! "Poor blacks?" Nope! "Glare?" Nope! Some minor light waving about every now and again that I barely even noticed - maybe that's what people have been calling "glare" and complaining about? I don't know - but if that's it, I think they are being very pedantic. I wound the lenses in as far as they would go, and the FoV is just great. Vertically and horizontally. Steam had set the resolution to 100% and the refresh rate at 90hz. I'll have a play with that after I've checked everything out with current settings. My justification for shelling out nearly £1000 on this headset was that it would serve me for several years, through a couple of major PC upgrades, which would improve it's performance as we go. I currently have zero regrets. This baby is a keeper! :) btw - the Lighthouses do whine, and I did hear it to start with, before it slipped into obscurity. I pronounce myself well chuffed! (get the message? :music_whistling:)
  16. So here we are - everything physically set-up for the Index, having simply unscrewed my two Rift sensors (at 180° to each other, in the ceiling corners) and screwed in the Lighthouse emitters, powered them up and the headset and I'm sat here, not putting the headset on and having a jolly because I'm covered with sweat, even with a 16" fan blowing at me. Hopefully, it'll get better soon, and I can have a go... frustrating. PS:
  17. Yeah, that's what I thought. There were a lot of people very disappointed about the CV1 disappearing from sale, especially those who didn't want to buy one of the new headsets, and were concerned what would happen if their current CV1 developed a fault or was damaged, or a sensor went U/S. Didn't seem logical that production or sale was halted, when Oculus themselves were saying that the S isn't aimed at CV1 owners.
  18. You'd be screwed for a decent controller, though
  19. To my surprise... and for £333 - not bad... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Oculus-Rift-Touch-Controllers-Bundle/dp/B073X8N1YW/ref=sr_1_14?keywords=virtual+reality+headset&qid=1564002080&s=gateway&sr=8-14 It's the complete, original package. Wonder if they found some stock somewhere or are Oculus now selling them again? Doesn't say they are refurbished.
  20. Well I didn't say it was quicker, did I? I said that copying takes a while anyway, and it's not an issue for me to download it - which it isn't. Oh - and all my back-ups are on an old 2TB SATA (1) mechanical HDD which I connect via USB. ;)
  21. Wow - mine arrived midday, despite the tracking saying it hadn't left the depot. Had a panic moment when I saw a huge gash in the side of the box, where it had obviously been dropped against a hard straight edge. Luckily, no signs of any damage inside - not even to the Index box itself. Now my nostrils are filled with that lovely new-headset aroma :) It's the 3rd time this year - hopefully this one will be the keeper. @Gunnergolly - I'll tell you when I've got it working. The Rift S had a good image quality, but fine SDE was apparent and that FoV was the killer (IPD 69). Would have kept it but for the FoV. Don't think I'll have that issue with the Index. Been mucking about with the Knuckles for while, like a child at Christmas! My left stick clicks vertically, but not any other way (how it's supposed to be, according to Valve) and my right one clicks down, but also clicks when pushed backwards and down. PS - won't be testing it or even setting it up for a while, yet - it's far too hot and humid here atm.
  22. Had another go after my recent reinstall, and as my Index is due today, it needed to be done. Unfortunately, we are suffering warm and humid times in Europe, so this is the limiting factor with overclocking right now - I'll probably have another go later in the year. Still worth it, though... If you're curious or, like me, haven't overclocked a video card in a very long time, the MSI website has all the info you need: https://www.msi.com/blog/get-a-free-performance-boost-with-afterburner-oc-scanner They also tell you the best way to do it manually, if you want to eek more out of your GPU.
  23. I used to keep a back-up of 2.5, as well as those I have of 1.2.4, 1.5.6 and 1.5.8, but last time I tried a completely clean install from the newly downloaded web installer I got a really nice performance boost in VR, so I decided to do that again this time around. It's no big hassle, just leave it for the afternoon, so not really an issue. Takes a long time to copy 160+ GB as well, so might as well have it directly from the server.
  24. This is why I closed my sellers account and only buy now. Even as a buyer, it's very blatantly obvious that I get pretty much what I want - even told I can keep items and have a refund, or "don't send it back" items that were not cheap. ebay is in a sorry state these days and I have tons of PC gear I want to sell. Craigslist is also a shambles here - I looked into it and it was full of prostitution offers and the like, even in the electronics section.
  25. Took around 6 hours today, to get a 165GB DCS 2.5.5 release installed. Just minus 5 of the aircraft modules, otherwise the full monty. For the first time since it was introduced, I didn't get any security warnings during the torrent.
