It's the main DCS website: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/ Just did it again when I went to copy the address bar

Why does SteamVR start up every time I visit the DCS web page? It's the only website that does this and I get fed up switching off SteamVR only for it to restart repeatedly as I browse the page, even though I have my headset and sensors switched off. It's getting to the point where I'll soon stop visiting the site.

I don't understand their policy about returns. From reading the RMA thread on Reddit, there doesn't seem to be any set circumstances that define when an advance replacement is sent, and when not. I thought it may have been dependent on the fault or specific issue being reported, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe it depends where you are - but I'm sure I've seen others in the US getting advance service. Hope you get a decent replacement, anyway - we are paying enough for this gear, it needs to be working properly. Thanks - I do feel better today, though totally knackered and eating just dry toast and bananas soon gets to you. Still can't game or use VR, though. I reckon I'll be okay getting the return to the next town - got 2 weeks to return it since last Friday, so should be up & about by then.

This is the sole reason I returned my Rift S and went for the Index - and now I have it I consider it a superior product, not just on account of the IPD issue. I'm now, however, somewhat less impressed with Valve returns. Yes, they got the replacement to me in less than a week from me reporting an issue, but the return label they have sent me is for DHL, despite the Index having been delivered by Parcelforce (Royal Mail). The nearest drop-off point for DHL is over 20 miles away, in another town, and yesterday I came down with food poisoning which has hit me pretty hard and there's no way I can drive anywhere (and I shouldn't have to). The Parcel Force pick-up point is round the corner from my house, less than 100 yards away. I pointed out to them how far away DHL are, but have yet to hear back.

My replacement switch arrived today - to my surprise it's a simple plug-in job, so when I do it, I'll make a short video for YouTube to help anyone without experience to see how simple it is. I had thought I would be soldering (I'm a qualified radio tech, so no worries there), but this is good news for others with the switch broken in transit.

I don't know. I've just been reading some posts on Reddit where people say they were able to get a refund after having one or two replacements sent out, apparently Valve are not difficult where defective headsets and refunds are concerned. One of them said he asked, just to make sure, if he would still be able to get a refund if his issue wasn't resolved and he was told he could - so might be an idea to do that yourself. My headset has arrived - was surprised that they sent just the headset, I though it would be the entire kit, but that suits me. However, the error is still prevalent in the replacement headset. It isn't quite as bad as in the first one, but nevertheless, it's there and obvious from the off. If push comes to shove, I'll keep it, but I'm waiting to see what they have to say for themselves. This does look like a very common issue, and I've yet to see a single returnee getting a replacement where the issue was resolved. In fact, that is the subject of a thread on Reddit - and no-one has been able to come up with a single case of a non-faulty headset being received after RMA. That leads me to think that the cause lies elsewhere, which is why I would be willing to keep the new one despite the fault. Not good - but even so, this headset is just so impressive.

You're welcome :) -
Well I can't say I'm fully confident the new Index will be the end of my troubles - so many issues that people have had, and the vertical lines thing was the only problem with my first one. I do worry that it might be "out of the frying pan and into the fire" but I'm hoping against hope that the one arriving tomorrow will have no issues - else I may well be sending the same one back! As far as dead pixels go, I know that monitor manufacturers are permitted a certain amount of dead pixels before it can be considered refundable/RMA material, but I hope that's not the case with VR headsets. I think it also depends where they are - yours are in the middle, right? So should be a deffo RMA job.

Really? I don't know my way around AMD graphics cards any more, but from the comparison articles I've seen across the 'net, the RX570 is on a par with the GTX 1060 - and that is perfectly capable of running DCS World in VR - I know, because up till a couple of months ago, it's what I was using.
-
Wow, that's amazing. My new Index will be here tomorrow - that's one week from first reporting the problem to receiving the new replacement kit. Well done, Valve!

I agree - Odyssey or + would be a good bet if you're on a tight budget - and they've been available at low prices new, recently. Just have to find one ;) edit: just had a look and it seems the + is back up to normal price - but they are regularly reduced, so if you're not in a hurry may be worth waiting. Before going for Rift S, make sure your IPD is within a few mm of the default 63.5mm

Which HOTAS do you own? I've made my own diagrams and have offered them here before for people to use. If what you want isn't here, let me know anyway - I've owned a number of controllers and made diagrams for them all: https://postimg.cc/gallery/giqu0ai4/ -
If no-one can help you here, I'd suggest posting in Virpil's Tech Support forum: https://forum.virpil.com/index.php?/forum/3-virpil-controls-english-forum/ Or simply use the contact form on the shop page, they are usually very helpful. btw guys, there's a new firmware release and VPC configurator, as well - 23rd July.

I've had a quick look around - though I've never heard of this make (seems they only recently started making PSU) they seem to have got off to a good start, with some decent reviews and apparently is a good unit for gamers' PCs, so should be up to snuff. https://proclockers.com/reviews/power-supplies/gamdias-astrape-p1-750g-rgb-power-supply-review https://www.funkykit.com/reviews/power-supplies/gamdias-astrape-p1-650g-power-supply-review/ second is for the 650W PSU Conclusion:

Probably will get better performance with the 8700k then.

I dunno, y'know. Isn't that at 4.6GHz anyway? Should be enough - and won't you just get it up to the 5GHz that imacken has? Wouldn't expect a big improvement with that kind of increase. I think the Golden Number for DCS World is about 4.5GHz, although I'm managing on 4.3, that's my choice - used to run at 4.5 and my cpu will do that (it's a hot summer, so I reduced it a little). Might not give as much as you are hoping for? Just don't want you shelling out loadsa dosh and being disappointed. Higher clock speeds always help to some degree - just not entirely sure it would be the change you want in this case.

It's okay again now - unfortunately not able to delete post... :no_sad:

Yes - it was less than 2 working days (reported Saturday, response Tuesday). I think you are most likely to get an advance replacement if they are sure there's a fault. This also means, of course, that the replacement should arrive in advance of you returning the defective unit. They told me I should return my headset within 2 weeks, but I can wait longer if my new unit doesn't arrive within that timescale. Most accommodating. I've certainly no complaints about support - I provided a list of things I had tried and they told me that it had encompassed everything they would have asked me to do - so straight on with a replacement. It was the same with Oculus after the Rift CV1 release. There were so many complaints about poor service, but I was very satisfied with my own experience (I got a replacement unit for that, too). I agree - and when I was looking through those settings I was pretty amazed at how low you are having to go, considering your rig. I have very accdeptable performance now - but I know nothing of SteamVR settings and how they affect performance even with my CV1 (I just left everything as is) let alone a brand new headset. What I do know is that my performance in the Index is easily good enough now, and is most definitely locked at 45fps. The only settings I fiddled with in Steam was upping the resolution to 120% - Steam had already set the refresh rate to 90Hz. Setting 80Hz actually made the graphics worse - more blur. PS - might add that I have the grass/ground clutter completely off and the detail radius reduced to 10,000
-
Okay - I did the test of setting up the Index in a different PC in a different room, but the vertical lines issuie was still very noticable. Meantime, Valve have offered an advance replacement, so I'm going ahead with that - but if the new one is the same, I'll probably hang on to the current one.

Here ya go...

I've ordered the WidmoVR prescription lenses for my Index - don't expect them for a while, since they are snowed under with orders - but I was using the VR Lens Labs ones up to now, which are mounted on a frame like normal spec's, but with an elastic headband (HERE. Please note these are not specifically made for Index - they were originally made for Rift) The problem I'm having with those and Index is that I always feel they are being pushed into my face, and specifically, the bridge of my nose, regardless of where I have the eye relief set. It started getting painful after some longer sessions, so I decided to try the original VR Lens Lab lenses for the Rift CV1 - you know, the ones everyone was moaning didn't stay in place properly - and guess what? Perfect fit for the Index! I'm going to do a quick video later - but these things fit straight in, the way they should have done in CV1, but never did cos they always fell out or out of place. Now, they are slightly smaller than the Index lenses, but when you look through them it makes zero difference. Also, when they are in place, they are not even close to the lenses, so no worries about scratching. I'll still have those Widmo ones, but I'm set for the meantime :)
-
I don't know why they called it "friendly fire" though - I'd have said it was just an accident.
-
Yeah, sorry Twwhitey, I can't think of anything to suggest for that issue. The only time I had that I didn't know why, either, and after a clean reinstall it disappeared. My relatively low settings are in post 565 if you'd like to try them. I'm using 90Hz with 120% resolution in SteamVR now. The only issue that remains for me in DCS World is that I get an intermittent loading screen when loading up missions - and that doesn't matter to me at all, really.
-
I'm finding the Index far superior to what I got in the Rift S - and not just in this sim. Frustrating that I can't capture that vertical lines problem on camera, though - just spent a half hour flying around and recording through the lens with both my DSLR and a proper video camera and neither showed it. I've had to send someone else's picture to Valve support. If it came to it, I'd keep the Index and put up with it. It can be a annoying, but it's definitely not game breaking. Didn't notice it at all in Elite, yesterday evening, which is also fantastic in Index. Still on a high from this thing! :)
