1. Hi Miles, Hope your well and staying safe (and no doubt busy) at home! I have been thinking about possible improvements to the FCU's and not sure if this would in anyway be feasibile, however... Currently my only real issue in using the FCU's in cockpit is the activation of rotaries. It's very hit and miss for me and I have resorted to using a mouse wheel on my knee as opposed to trying to manipualte them via the FCU buttons. Therefore I would like to see a small wheel type addition, possibly above where the buttons go currently. Below would be easier to reach but you wouldn't have the depth to set it. Much like the wheel that is on the Thrustmaster FA18 stick.(the push button +2 way, next to the Recce button). Anyways just thought I'd share my ramblings! ;) I attach a particulary poor photoshop to try and help illustrate...
2. I can't help you with point 1, but as to the above, Miles mentioned that early adopters can just email Carol at the orders email address: orders@pointctrl.com I emailed last weekend and just followed the orginal ordering format - Forum name with my orginal backer number and added "New FCU's" in the title. Then I just stated that I would like 2. Hopefully this will work, will let Miles jump in, just in case of any FUBAR'd protocols by myself...:music_whistling:
3. Hey Deano, No questions yet but just wanted to thank you for taking the time to update us. This looks really useful! I was thinking about opportuntites to add another 3 buttons above the current ones on the FCU's, but as they're about to get a whole lot smaller I'm guessing that may not be a practical option going forward? Cheers Oh yes nearly forgot, Miles just wanted to say I ran though a new calibration last night. Although the Assist screen goes a little "odd" at the botom of the page, the actual calibration went though really well. No issues connecting and even my age addled brain went through the steps a lot easier, so many thanks for the streamlining!
4. Hi Miles, Sounds good to me. Will drop Carol an email this weekend if all goes well!
5. Awesome iteration you have there Sir! Glad to see you have added a big o'l red self destruct button in case of compromise by the wife! ;)
6. Hey Miles, Gotcha! That makes sense, will give her a go! Slightly OT (OK very Offtopic...) Currently my hovering and general control close to the ground is OK(ish) but at altitude when wishing to descend, I have this tendenacy to adopt the profile of an anvil and plumet to the earth. Any thoughts or advised reading in regard to "controlled" descents you may have? Thanks! *edit* I am doing my best to RTFM and am currently goinig through Chucks guide.
7. Hey Miles! Having just reloaded the Huey (I wonder why??? :D) I have noticed that when I'm reaching up to the overhead switches, I find it quite difficult to get my cursor to appear. I then have to lower my aim to get the cursor back on and can then usually get it on target to click the appropriate switch. Is it reaching the limit of the pre defined cursor limits? And if so, do I need to reset them? It shouldn't be the FCU losing the HMS as my head is looking up (so thereofor the HMS is still in line of sight with the FCU???). Any thoughts?
8. Miles, Just a quick public THANK YOU!!! You Sir are a gent (and with the patience of a saint!!!). All issues are now solved! For those interested, I thought I had installed the new firmware, but it hadn't taken. Possibly an issue with the Zip software I use (but more likely...operator error!) It was great to catch up, but please get some rest. :) Really looking forward to some online missions.
9. Hey Miles and gang! Long time no speak, but finally getting some time to get back into some flying. Hope you are well? Though I haven't been on in a while I've kept a watching brief of things ;) and you seem busy as ever! So having got DCS back into my life, my first point of call was of course getting PCTRL working again. Unfortunately, I'm having a few issues (same as AKA_CLUTTER and DD_Crash). Bascally I have installed the latest Firmware. But when I try to start calibration I have the 1 green light showing voice assist on the GUI. I have checked the Com port (it shows its on 5). But no amount of clicking the right black button gets the second green light on. I'm hoping to be about tomorrow so will drop onto DISCORD if you might be about? Cheers and hope to chat soon!
10. People of a certain age...I thought the same thing when I read the title of the post. :) And back on topic, I have PointCTRL and I think you will find it an excellent interface.
11. Neat! (In both senses of the word!)
12. LOL, These days I now only pretty much think about number 1...Feeding. Hey Blacley, sorry to hear you've not been well. Hope your feeling better now and can get your order sorted (its worth the wait )!
13. Hi Miles, Its not that bad, they charge £2.00 a minute (which is staggering but works out at £120ish), however weirdly the guy on the phone stated it was only £20 as I had put a cap on max spending on the account. He also said that when the bill is generated I can phone up and plead my case which may see them reduce it still further. Either way, its very kind of you to offer to compensate my stupidity, but unnecessary as whatever I finally have to pay, it will be a sage reminder that in future I check to ensure what I am doing is in fact what I think I'm doing! Back on topic, I think its a great idea to get a Discord channel up and running and would love to try some online flying with you all. Will have to see if my internet is up to it but would certainly like to try. @Deano87. That could be a good shout, thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't really thought about possible bleed through of light at the time as it was just a quick and dirty flight but having remembered Miles video on IR sources it may well fit the profile!
14. OK, a very quick update! Just launched DCS and went into a quick start mission (FA18 Carrier Launch). Didn't calibrate or mess with anything. Clicked a few buttons (already forgotten the instructions LOL) and hey presto! It only bloody works!!! I was clicking controls, flipping switches and even rotating dials within seconds. The only immediate thing I noticed was the cursor was a bit jittery (which I'm guessing I can sort through calibration?). Sorry for the rushed post, but I really need to go to work but just wanted to say, Miles, though you may deny all knowledge, IMHO, you Sir, are a genius! Until you actually use them you can't really know how good these are going to be! Congrats!
15. Morning All, Just wanted to say a quick thanks to all with their help and suggestions. Special thanks to Miles for your time last night (early evening for you???). You are a true gent! I haven't had chance to fully explore doing the update on my PC. (I did try and run it again and it just exited as before, but that may be because it's already updated???). Great idea about using Discord (this may come as a bit of a shocker Miles, but I actually use it... and they say you can't teach an old dog new tricks!!! Might be especially helpful for those of us that think they are calling Miles on their WhatsApp but in fact, was calling on their mobile (cell) phone account. I'm currently negotiating with Vodafone who may waive the 1hr 6 minute international call I'd inadvertently made... Currently in full "humble pie" "gee I'm dumb but think you're a great company" mode.:helpsmilie: LOL!!!
16. Hi Panther, thanks for the quick reply. Unfortuantely it already goes direct to my PC. For good measure I just tried another (rear) USB port on my PC. Still no joy. I'm not getting any kind of "chime" sound either. When I hit the reset button it gives the disconnecting USB device sound. No matter how quick I hit the reset button. And the black .bat box just closes.
17. Hey Miles, Good news, my PointCtrl arrived today! Bad news, for the life of me I can not get it to install the new firmware! I'm sure I must be doing something wrong but what that is has me stumped??? Briefly: The HMS is plugged in - red light on unit. I've downloaded the latest firmware. I launch the .bat. Double click the white button on the HMS (Ive tried various speeds on the double click). None work. The batch file just closes (no text). I've unplugged the HMS, reseated it, changed USB ports, restarted it and my PC, tried to reset the HMS. Redownloaded the firmware. Nothing. Any ideas?
18. Hey Miles! Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you, I'm back!!! After what seems an eternity our house move is complete and everything is back to normal...ish! Thanks for your patience, hopefully, my PCtrl. is quietly prepping itself for a swift hop across the pond so I can shortly free up a little more space at your place! Hope all is well with you and your family and things are going well with your little endeavour! Have I missed anything???
19. Thanks mate, Miles you're a star! Wise words, wise words indeed, but it was never the lifting that was the issue...just the landings!
20. Well that just typical...my numbers up (in a good way - #6) but I'm literally on the cusp of moving house (move "should" be 17th June). I don't mind paying now but will need to hold off on which address I have it sent to for a week I think.
21. Thanks for the link! Wow, what a great thread! There's a lot of very talented people out there!!! Did you post anything about how you made the joystick stand in another thread or did I miss that? Or was it a case of raiding your nearest hardware store and trying different pipes to see what worked?
22. Hey Mariner, loving your pit! Particularly interested in your pipework!!! I did copy some guys idea about mounting my stick on wider drain pipes that fit the circumference of the hog base, that works pretty well but I really like this idea with the offset bend bringing the stick closer. Was it difficult to put together? Back on topic... The mention of hitting physical objects while using PCtrl reminded me that Miles mentioned early on some sort of physical screen "thingy" (stop me if I'm getting too technical...) that you could hit while touching the controls. Is that still something planned?
23. Yep, you must be of a similar age to me, as when I read this thread I was a little disappointed to read that people would actually charge money to help someone play a game. Many moons ago I paid quite a lot of money to learn how to fly a real plane. (FAA CPL) I had a professional instructor, got in a real plane and went up in the sky, passed my check rides, etc. So to see people actually have an hourly rate to "teach" people to fly a computer game??? Thanks but I will pass. But as always that's my opinion. If people are willing to pay for something they think is worth it to them, then go for it. Choice is a wonderful thing, and hey, you also get to hang out with an internet "celebrity"!!!
24. Miles, your on fire! Looking good. I just wish I was closer to you and I would happily have tried it! On a slight side note (sorry for the OT), if anyone is on the fence about the Rift S, I've found it to be a very worthwhile upgrade from the CV1. It certainly isn't perfect but a considerable step in the right direction. I think to begin with I had set my expectations way too high and was expecting everything would be pin sharp. I could see the improvements but wasn't blown away. I then fired up my CV1 again and WOW, suddenly having a direct "before and after" comparison made it very clear (no pun intended). The S is truly superior and more defined, both inside and out of the cockpit. I've had no issues with inside out tracking either.
