Bleh, another sale... ED has no mercy... My poor wallet... So, what to buy now? No idea... I have A-10C, A-10C II, AJS-37, F/A-18C, Flaming Cliffs 3, Fw-190 D-9, KA-50, Mi-8, Mig-21, SA342, UH-1, Nevada, and Persian Gulf. Downloaded the F-16, but it just doesn't quite click. Might get Combined Arms just for fun. I really should just learn what I have, but that isn't the same as a shiny new bird in the digital hangar. What are everyone's thoughts? What are you thinking of getting, if anything? I am just curious. I know this has been discussed ad nauseum, during every sale, but I ask just to hear what you all say. Thanks

Mike Romeo, that is solid gold -
While I appreciate the video link, kotor663, I would rather troubleshoot on my own than watch more than two minutes of that jackass. Thanks anyways. Also, to respond to Flappie, using nVidia Vsync seems to help quite a bit. Thanks. Now I just need to figure out how to win a 1 on 1 against a Tor with my A-10. Did not realize those bastards could shoot down a Maverick.

I set up a kind of training mission on the Caucuses Map with some ground units at the abandoned runways north of Batumi. I fly my A-10 up there to try and take out the Tor with my IR Mavericks. I have TGP on the right screen and the IR Mavs on the left screen. Tor starts tracking me while I am trying to run in on it and I notice my FPS is around 30. I don't understand why my frame drops from 60 to 30. I turn off my mirrors and it doesn't do much. I go heads down in the cockpit looking at one MFCD and the frames go back to 60. Look up through HUD and they tank again. What could be causing this? Specs are AMD 3900x, 2080 Super, 32 gig RAM. I attached a shot of my settings. It doesn't seem like I should be struggling. Any advice?

I do not think military fighter pilots are borderline mentally handicapped... They may take offense. Their egos are a bit fragile... as proven by that article. Also, what is wrong with helos using terrain? Pretty sure that is a top tactic for helos, what with NOE flying and pop up attacks. But I suppose you are correct. Kinda like how there is no way a dude that lives in a mud hut with his 50 year old mosin nagant and pile of UXO can cause any trouble for a professional military with high end equipment.

Hmm... I turn bird strikes off in the options. Maybe that is it? Super weird it is only left engine. Do you do the startup yourself, or do you "cheat" and use autostart (no judgement if you auto, I do)? If you do it yourself, maybe you are missing a step? Does the engine fail after a certain time, say 5 minutes or close to it? Can you deduce what might be the problem, then replicate it? Figure out as many conditions you have control over when it doea happen, then try to make it happen again, consistently. Also, post a track. And you are correct, the turbine will spin even if the engine is dead due to windmilling. It is a key component to doing air restarts in planes like the Princess Mig-21

Oh, yeah... I suppose I shoud add that DCS is not real world. You should fully expect just about any kind of engagement you can imagine. Helo on helo can totally happen. There is even a mission where it is like the first thing you deal with (Battle) I am paricularly annoyed with some of the Spring Tension Campaign missions. "That gunship escort you have? Nah, you shoot at the bad guys in your Hip. So what if they are Mi-28s, they can't shoot for some damn reason." Bleh... I can't even count how many times I asked myself, "Why the hell am I doing this?"

Well, color me incorrect, Fri13. I thought we were getting a FLIR for some reason. Thanks for the clarification. Indeed, there are some things needing implementation in the Shark. Regardless of things not quite correct, I still find the KA-50 amazing and quite enjoyable to fly. It is just so odd and unique. Now, to counter some things about helo on helo combat. I never said helos will not fight eachother, I said they should not fight eachother. No combat unit, tactical to strategic level, should ever find themselves up against an equivalent force. If you find yourself in a tactically or strategically "fair" fight, someone messed up pretty bad. That is the philosophy I am using. I am familiar with military planning and execution. At no point has anyone said we will leave some things in the rear because it wouldn't be fair to the enemy. There are several reasons to not bring full kit, but saying it isn't fair to them aint one of them. Helos shouldn't fight eachother because one side shouldn't have any air assets left. Now I admit that is a lot of conjecture, just like Germany shouldn't go through Belgium. China shouldn't cross the border into North Korea. But shit can and does happen. That is why helos are A-A capable. They shouldn't need the capability, but you never fully know. War is chaos, and militaries plan for chaos. That is a very difficult thing to do. TL;DR Never fight fair. If you do, you could lose. This is reference to Sun Tzu and the Dicta Boelcke.

Holy hell this forum is all kinds of all over the place. Wrong info, good info, bad info, out of context info, honest info... this is fun. I mean, arguing over who came up with APFSDS tank rounds? Thought this was a flight sim forum. Which helo would win a dogfight with another helo? I mean, DCS is a sandbox. I say when Apache is released, we will probably find out. Also, putting single player aside (Battle mission), attack helos would rarely ever fight. If ever. I honestly cannot think of one time where attack helos ever fought eachother. Can anybody? Seriously, I would love to know if it has ever happened. I think I may look that up. I will just say I am upset the BS3 is on hold. Really wanted FLIR. Don't mind the RWR or Fox 2s, but would like to be able to fight at night without needing flares. I mean, our current Shark can do night stuff, but it can be frustrating. Keep this going, it is fun.

Your yaw damper sucks, actually your ka-50 yaw in general
shake307 replied to Reticuli's topic in DCS: Ka-50 Black Shark
I agree with Raptor. Yaw is not limited when using any mode of flight control. I frequently use FD Mode as it feels more familiar to the other helos. I am constantly going full left or right pedal during maneuvers and have never noticed a limitation. When trimming for hover, i turn off FD Mode and trim for hover. I also use the controls indicator. The Shark has a very unusual flight control system and flight model. Coax rotors have less yaw authority than conventional tail rotor types. Coax does not have a big fan at the back to push the tail around. Coax birds literally use differential torque from the two rotor heads to control yaw. The Shark inherently lacks yaw authority simply because of its design. You can actually see the rotors doing weird stuff on takeoff and landing. Coax rotors in a perfect world would make it so the helo stays straight in heading during takeoff and landing. This is not the case, as the Shark requires some pedal input to keep the nose straight. That is because the lower rotor is getting "dirty" air from the top. Therefore, the lower rotor has less yaw authority as the top rotor requiring pedal input to compensate for the increase in torque. One last thing I will say regarding flight controls... Make damn sure you know what systems you have engaged or disengaged. The Shark will do some wacky things if you think you have it setup one way, but in fact have it setup for something else. (Flying a route in hover mode) Hope this helps -
What does HKTB in screen control mean?
shake307 replied to jozeffff's topic in DCS: Mi-8MTV2 Magnificent Eight
Heading, roll, pitch, and altitude channels for "autopilot". It is more like a Stability Augmentation System (SAS). Roll and pitch are generally always on (unless rotor rpm drops too much, more on that later). They move around according to how much they are adjusting flight controls to hold the helo at trimmed attitude. They only have so much authority, as they are only trying to hold the helo in the last position it was trimmed to. I dont think I have ever seen the Roll and Pitch go yellow N (which is out of limits), but heading will with a lot of collective adjustment as you are fluctuating rotor torque with collective, therefore requiring pedal adjustment. I try not to use altitude hold as it gets a bit wonky and has caused me to crash. Finally, with all that said, the center console actually has the indicators showing what this system is doing (the white lines moving). The indicator in the upper right of the screen is just a representation of those indicators. One last thing. Map your autopilot switches your flight controls. When you get the inevitable Generator failure, the helicoptor will lose its damn mind and try to kill you as your autopilot just died. And it doesnt automatically come back on when you get power back. You dont want to be wrestling the flight controls while looking for the switch turn Roll and Pitch back on. I have it all mapped to some buttons on my throttle. I know that was a long explanation to your question. I hope it helps -
Dare I say, I would buy the Catalina as soon as they put a price on it.

That is actually a good reason for the weird way the Russiand did it.

True. I think this community shows some appreciation when things get fixed. But never on the same level as complaining when something is wrong. I often fall into the latter. I have complained several times about the Radar in the Mig-21. Thank you so much to whoever finally lassoed that beast problem. It is greatly appreciated.

Veteran DCS user seeking module guidance
shake307 replied to SmirkingGerbil's topic in Steam Support
I am somewhat in the same boat. My passion is rotors, but A-10 holds a special place in my heart. I have the Hornet and am in a slow process of learning it. It carries 4 HARMs for those pesky Tors (which are a real bear to the A-10). Tried the Viper in free to fly but just didn't connect with it. Same with the Harrier. I chose the Hornet over the Viper simply because I like the Hornet more. I believe the Hornet is better for SEAD simply because the module is closer to feature complete. I am not sure where the Hornet and Viper line up for SEAD when both are feature complete. Or you could go Viggen and rip along at 50 meters going mach 1.5. Carries glide cluster munitions, Mavericks, rockets, and other things. SAMs can't hit you at low alt high speed. Do SEAD with speed. -
Okay, will look into this more. I just figured the Russian MGRS as significantly different than American, and was trying to mash the two philosophies together. I guess I just forgot how much the two nations tried to do everything so different, sometimes out of spite.

After some faffin around, got it to work. I guess it makes sense... Anyways, the switch is located next to the Payload Profile Selector Switch located on the right side of the cockpit. The panel is in the windshield. The switch is the Bomb Release Switch. Flip the red cover up and either press "U" or click the silver switch under the guard. I believe the pods need to be empty for this to work. That is the process that just worked for me. Thanks for the help. I would have never figured that out on my own.

I am playing the Spring Tension campaign and am about 10 missions in. I do not have a good grasp on understanding Russian grid coordinates. What is "89-73" or "53-46". I think I understand the first two digits are grid square, but I have no clue how to interpret the second two digits. Also, that particular grid reference only seems to work with the "Russian" maps, not with most kneeboard or the F10 maps. Unless I am missing something. Any help is appreciated.

We are gonna let this slide? Somebody let this slide? A missile called the ASRAAM? I wonder if it is "rear aspect."
