  1. Varjo Aero + about 12 DCS modules provides substantial more fun and than a 4090 and costs less if you already own a 3080 I will upgrade my hardware when there is a GPU with >16 GB VRAM and double the bandwith of the 3080 for less than 1000 bucks.
  2. ... Varjo seems to have dropped support for Aero. There are still no local dimming or reprojection which could come in handy on heavier missions. It also has abysmal vertical fov ... ... seems to have dropped support ... I feel quite well supported There just was a new upgrade to the varjo software ... no reprojection ... There is reprojection. It is called motion smoothing on the Aero. I prefer to just run 45 FPS sync without this feature and I am able to run high DCS settings in this mode on a 5600&3080 (Visib. Range Extreme, ...) It looks quite nice ... abysmal vertical fov ... Coming from the Reverb I do not feel a difference The Aero is performing much better on the same hardware than the Reverb. Many people can perhaps forgo a hardware upgrade by switching to the Aero.
  3. do not add 32, go for a kit, or pay twice like I did
  4. VR sets are uncomfortable (the experience makes up for it), you can fly several hours in them, the Aero is more comfortable than the Crystal.
  5. The Pico 4 was not an option for me because of my 3080. The 3080 and the other last gen cards are not good at streaming the data to the pico I have heard. I am not sure how this applys to the quest 3. I myself went with the Aero also because I wanted a dedicated PC VR headset. Is there any rich DCS user that owns both an Aero and a Crystal and is willing to share his experiences?
  6. Thank you for your insights. I concur with the majority of the perspectives you've shared. However, I believe my experience, being a Varjo Aero user, leads to a different situation from users of other VR headsets. One of the standout features of the Aero is its 45 FPS mode, which I personally prefer, for instance, to the 60 FPS mode offered by the Reverb (I think the Reverb flickered a little bit at 60 FPS, I do not have this experience in the Aero). I've observed that users of other VR headsets generally target 60 or 90 FPS. Since my target is set at 45 FPS, I have the luxury of operating in the "Extreme visibility" mode. My intuition is that the heightened experience isn't necessarily only due to a more stable FPS rate. Instead, it's the minimized environment rendering changes, such as pop-ins or Level of Detail (LOD) adjustments in proximate regions, which make the experience appear smoother as well. To clarify further, when discussing "smoothness" in VR, I think it's essential to distinguish between: 1. consistent framerate, and 2. steady visual experience.
  7. Textures Medium & Terrain Textures Low to stay in my 3080s VRAM limits Shadows Low & SSS nice visual with little performance impact SSAO the focus window of Varjo-foveated is nearly invisible with ambient occlusion and my other settings Visib. Range Extreme this has funnily virtually no performance impact on my 5600&3080 system and looks gorgeous Anisotropic Filtering x16 for the sharpness and the runway details Varjo Aero 35 PPD & Varjo-foveated default settings for a reasonable render resolution and not exceeding GPU bandwith limits With these settings I enjoy single and multi player in all aircrafts with nice visuals in the great 45 FPS sync mode of the Varjo Aero If you exceed VRAM limits you will encounter massive single digit FPS stuttering If you exceed reasonable render resolution/memory bandwith of your GPU there will be shorter stutters and jumping visuals when you look to the side (If you are on the lookout for your own opimal settings the ingame FPS counter can also provide the necessary VRAM info.)
  8. What is smooth in the L39 is not in the F15. I can keep the high DCS settings but i have to reduce the render resolution to 35 PPD to get a really smooth experience in the F15 on my system At 35 PPD ("Standard" Aero resolution) I can look sideways at airports flyovers without inducing stuttering again in the F15 like I am able in the L39 at 39PPD. (39x39) / (35x35) eq. round about 1.24 that is about 25% less pixels rendered. Picture quality at 35 PPD is still very nice and miles above the Reverb. Besides the VRAM it seems I have to care for the bandwidth limits of my 3080 as well in my settings. By the way I enjoy optimizing my settings for my system in itself
  9. Just to be clear it is not about absolute performance, but about removing sporadic small stutters in sharp turns or rolls, or while LOD change of scenery and popping up of new regions.
  10. Thanks for your advice. I already used core unparking prior to these steps. I would rate core unparking also as ***
  11. Task: butter smooth L39 single player free flight caucasus intuitive ingredients: SMT (hyperthreading) off * not important if I stay in GPU VRAM and bandwidth (resolution) limits Nvidia driver prerendering 4 frames *** Limit DCS to corecount -1 CPU cores ** counterintuitive ingredients: Nvidia driver: multithreading off *** High DCS Settings *** (High Textures & High Terrain & Visib. Range Extreme & High Shadows & SSS & Max preload & Max Trees & Max Scenery) Result: success Tested on: 5600 & 3080 & 64GB & Varjo Aero 39 PPD 35 PPD & Varjo-foveated default settings @ 45 FPS sync Try it (especially the counterintuitive steps) if you do not believe it (Legend: *, **, *** how much does this step contribute to a smooth experience)
  12. I enjoy playing go versus ai on my gpu and ai in the cloud. I am sure I would enjoy dogfighting one on one against ai as well. Some of the competent go ai were developed open source with an managable effort by a small group of people after the example of deep mind. Flying a plane is a much easier task than playing go or understanding and producing natural language. But I do not want to win an argument here. Nobody has to agree with my wishes. Lets wait and see.
  13. @cfrag: Why that fixation on ED. Because I noted the wish on the DCS wishlist? ... Welcome to the Wish List section for the core game, this is for all those things you would love to see added to DCS World. This is a safe zone for free expression of ideas, there are no bad ideas that doesn't mean every idea will be added or can be added. ...
  14. Why I Enjoy DCS (2.9) VR espically on the Varjo Aero: Key Takeaways from Various Tests 45 FPS Sync Mode: The Varjo Aero offers an effective 45 FPS sync mode. It's notable how it delivers stable performance even without motion reprojection. This efficiency permits relatively high settings, contrasting with HMDs that need 60 FPS or more. Performance with 5600 & 3080 Combo: On the Aero, 90 FPS is attainable at ultra low settings using this hardware combination. While it's an interesting configuration to test, for regular play, the enhanced visual quality at 45 FPS proves more favorable to me. VRAM Management on the 3080: Given the VRAM limitations of the 3080, it's essential to monitor video memory usage. For this, I disabled varjo-foveated rendering and turned to the openxr-toolkit to gauge VRAM under different settings. Be wary: hitting the VRAM limit leads to severe stuttering, with FPS dropping sharply to one digit numbers. Balancing Resolution and Performance: In my initial tests, I leaned heavily into optimizing varjo-foveated settings for clarity, but even small values increase the rendered resolutions substantially. This over-optimization, however, came with trade-offs in multiplayer and demanding scenarios. Now, I stick to default varjo-foveated settings, paired with VRAM-friendly DCS configurations and MSAAx2, ensuring consistent 45 FPS performance and a pleasant visual experience in all situations.
  15. I can relate to your posts about the head strap. I also use one click down. When I am flying casually I use a more loose setup and move the hmd from time to time back into position to enjoy the comfort plus. If I am on a combat mission I use a tighter two click down setup and also suffer the face marks That way I can turn my head hectically in all directions and still enjoy the frenzy.
  16. The key point is that an external AI won't use the AI flight model, and to DCS, it will be indistinguishable from a human pilot, utilizing the same flight model as we do You do not "program" the AI to fly an artifical FM. The AI learns to fly DCS planes like humans do. That is what deep learning is about. The track files of DCS of the human players provide nice traininng data for the neural network. I am sure somebody is doing this already
  17. Computers learned to play GO with deep learning. I am sure they can play DCS with deep learning as well. Dont integrate the AI into DCS. Let the AI learn to play the game aka fly the planes as clients. I know ED has not the resources like DeepMind or OpenAI, but I am sure as well there are entities that have the resources and operate something like this already
  18. Varjo Aero about 1500 (HMD and two base stations and tax)
  19. RTX 3080? VRAM usage of your settings? I run medium textures & low terrain textures to not run into VRAM issues on the 3080 (in multiplayer)
  20. After further testing I can not confirm my first assumptions.
  21. Instant Action L39 Free Flight Caucasus: When I use 45 FPS fixed my plane is slower versus FPS sync deactivated (90 FPS) compared to the other plane of the formation in this mission. (I use the same low settings with both 45PFS and 90FPS for this comparison to make shure I achieve the 90 FPS constantly. I could not believe this behaviour in the first place, but different test runs confirmed the result.) Nose wheel steering in the Mig15 and the L39 is noticable and substantially easier at 90 FPS versus 45 FPS fixed. The input handling and simulation physics seem to be realated to the FPS. It should be independant from the frame rate. Can anybody compare their own experience? Is this only in VR? Is this different for particular headsets?
  22. DCS Pixel Density seems not to have any effect when using Varjo-Foveated. At least it has not any impact on my performance even when I set it to 2. Or is this because I am CPU bound? On my Varjo Aero at 39 PPD I can not really see a differenc between DCS PD 1 and 2.
  23. They just changed their settings to no voice chat.
  24. This is related to the 4YA servers. It works fine on other servers for me.
