Glowing Amraam and Innerloop: How is the i7 with BS? Considering about the same setup as you guys, just wondering if it is worth it. I have q6600 4gigs and 8800gts 640mb, frames are in the 20's to 30 range now, 1920x1200. Thanks
-
Ditto here, because of the amount of objects, my frame rates are in the teens, I have seen them drop as low as 9 one time -). Q6600, 4gigs, xppro, 8800gts 640mb...... Thanks

Overclocking or: A cheap way to 3.2 GHz (and more)
viper3two replied to kaos.dll's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
CE Mikemonster THANK YOU! Now I understand how overclocking works. I have never done it yet, but plan too in the next few months, I am building an i7 system hopefully. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain things, makes perfect sense now. Thanks again -
Eco, I checked the power supply and it *appears* to be a standard, but thanks for warning me of that, I was going to use it since it is a good 1000 watt ps. I will research this and find out for sure. Would rather spend an extra $150 for a ps than blow everything I have  Oh....and check this link out, looks like I would have to mod the hell outta the case. This is the exact case I have in the following link. Probably easier to get another one: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=186919 Thanks again for the heads up on this.....

Tx, I really appreciate that information and great post that you did on the fps comparison by oc'ing the cpu. I might save some bux and do as you said, just use what I have, get a good heat sink and a board that will let me clock it. Thanks again.

Thanks, will read up more on the I7, but that is what I think I will do. Anyone interested in a used xps700?

I don't want to hijack this thread but it is on the same subject and it is senseless posting another question with the same topic. I am looking for an fps boost as well. My current rig is Q6600 on a DellXPS 700, stock mobo, 8800GTS 640mb, 4gig ddr2, running XPPro sp3. On the Dell you cant get into the bios to overclock so I am considering replacing the whole thing. Have been looking at the Antec Nine Hundred box, I7-920, 4gb DDR3, Intel X58 board, using my 8800gts running Vista Ultimate. I currently get 20-30 fps alone, in the teens with heavy stuff going on. Do you think that with the above proc/mem/vid I would see much improvement? Has anybody got an I7 yet? Thanks

Can my system handle an nvidia 8800GT?
viper3two replied to Ferski's topic in PC Hardware and Related Software
Agree...600w is not enough to run that. I up'd mine to 1000 watt power supply and it seems to handle my 8800gtx 640mb ok..... -
Well, it turns out after doing alot of reading in dell's forums that the q6600 is the max you can go. Second issue is the mobo is a btx that is not the standard atx. So, you can reuse the case, but you wind up modding it quite a bit to make everything fit. I really hate to give up that case...it is beautiful brushed aluminum with the blue neon lights....its nice. Not to mention the other thing is the power supply has a non standard connector to the mobo. But....I have a friend who is a reseller close to me, and he priced out the following for me, so I am considering it: Antec Nine Hundred series gaming case Antec TruePower Quattro 1000 watt power supply Vista Ultimate SP1 Intel ATX X58 motherboard DX58SO 4GB Kingston 1333 DDR3 ram Intel Core I7-920 Extreme processor 2.66 Ghz ...and reuse my 8800GTX 640MB video card, SB Exteme sound card, 26" highdef monitor, Klipsh surround sound 200watt speakers, X52 pro.... For $1000 bux.... What do ya think? Good deal or not? Thanks again

So far, that seems to be correct. Since I first got it, it had a Pentium Dual Core, I put the q6600 quad in it with no issues, as well as changing out the 7900gs for the 8800gts 640mb vid card. No problems there either. I wish like heck I could overclock the cpu, but there is no way with the dell mobo, you can only use ntune and it doesn't really help that much as it would if you could unlock the bios in it... I am also considering getting a mobo/processor/ram since the rest of the stuff in the box seems to be up to par for the time being. The case, ps (1000 watt), drives, sound and vid card are all ok and should do good, just it seems I at the max for what the mobo can handle. So my big delima ATM is figuring out if I can just put a q9400 in it or should I do the mobo/processor/ram when my income tax check comes in :) ?? I tried contacting Dell about the mobo to see if it would handle a q9400 or q9450 and of course it is out of warranty and I couldn't figure out a way to contact them. I am still trying to figure out the processor issue. Since it has basically an nvidia 590 SLI board, Q6600, 4 gigs DDR, can somebody recommend a faster processor, something that has plenty of horse power and the best bang for the buck? I have a budget of around $500 on the upgrade either for the mobo/processor/ram or just the Q9400 itself. Thanks
-
Thanks for the reply Kuky. I kinda figured Black Shark is mostly processor dependent. I just figured that because no matter what I did, the frames stay the same. I will contact Dell support and ask them about what processor I can put on that board, not sure if it can handle a Q9x series or not, but will give it a try. Appreciate the help!

I have an XPS 700, with 4 gigs ddr2? memory, 1tb of drive space, a q6600 processor, a evga 8800gts 640mb video card, also a sb extreme music card. The motherboard is dell branded and it is a 590 sli edition nvidia, it has a 775 lga socket. The dell part number on the mobo is 0YF432. I am running xp pro sp3. In both ms flight sim and black shark, my frame rates are around 20-30 no matter what graphic options I choose (min, max, resolution 8x6 or 1920x1200), so I am thinking black shark uses mostly processor power. What would be the best option for upgrading to get more frames per second? I have seen the q9400 processor but not sure if that would work on this board because the q6600 has a different fsb vs. the q9400. Do you think it would be worth it and get more fps out of the processor if it would work? and also, what components would you upgrade? And, while I am asking, is it worth upgrading to vista to run this? would I see any differnce? I have a sh*tload of games that would take about a week to reload if I did that, just wondering if it is better.

Very nice, and thank you!! -
...I think it was Pro Pilot or maybe Flight Unlimited, I remember the rain on the glareshield and that was years ago....I too wish ED would implement this into the sim, very immersing..... Thanks

Just a quick question, can't figure this one out. I have an x52 that I have programmed for cockpit zoom view via one of the rotary dials on the throttle. I would like to also use that same dial as the external view zoom. But when I go into options, the only thing it will set to is my mouse wheel. Is there a way to set the dial to be external zoom instead of the mouse wheel? Thanks in advance.

Thanks guys for the info on the radio . I am still learning how to fly this beast lol, haven't had time to figure out everything yet. Thanks again.
-
I hate to admit it but I had a 386 and remember running the original flight simulator, then owned by bruce artwik under sublogic....before microsoft bought it out. I thought a 16 color crt showing wireframe buildings was the bomb back then! :)

hate to sound dumb, but where are these songs and are you playing them in the sim? Thanks

..ditto, I can loop it just fine but every time I do a barrel roll the blades break lol :joystick:

LMAO  Yea me too...but I swear I don't want to toast what I have. I have kept my xps at xppro just because it works good and I don't have to worry about whether any of my sims/games will run on it. I have vista on my laptop and I generally wind up cussing it a few times a week -). I don't know if I should do the Mojave dance yet or not.... Oh and by the way, that has got to be the most ridiculous commercial I have ever seen in my life. "This is Windows Vista?!?!". Yea bud, like how much did they pay you to act like you have never heard of Vista before. -
