Here is the doctoral thesis you referred to https://apps.dtic.mil/sti/citations/ADA414893 Of course, all the post PhD's here will shortly tell you how this is invalid.

We divide DCS players by every other available method. I don't see how this is any different. It has the added benefit of being able to have two completely different spotting implementations. In addition, folks who get all wrapped around the axle regarding some unfair advantage VR players are privileged to can be easily excluded from being exposed to said VR privilege.

Jester - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
=475FG= Dawger replied to 450Devil's topic in DCS: F-4E Phantom
Actually, this is completely incorrect. I have never turned off the clown. The Phantom is supposed to have two crewmen I fly the jet with the idiot on. He does some of his job well. The problem is he was intentionally programmed to be a caricature. Intensely annoying and until HB gives us the option to choose a “personality” befitting the brave souls who did it for real, I feel perfectly entitled to remind our dear readers that he is a clown. -

I just found it funny that you think he is great while recommending lowering his volume because he is a hazard to communication. In the real world, you would want what the WSO has to say to override exterior sources because a trained professional would be providing critical information in a timely fashion and not speaking any more than necessary. -

Hopefully, option one is a completely professional/calm/terse Jester and not just an increment in that general direction. -

He would be great if he wasn't such a blathering idiot, you mean. -

Yes. Quite often I have to ask "Say again, the idiot was blabbering " on comms. -
Can you tell me the name of the function where I should add it? I can figure it out from there. I already added MGRS to the list of missions. Basically, I want to fly this mission in the Kiowa with no helpers except a MGRS location. (No Smoke, No "we hear you", no bearing and distances) Search and Rescue with more emphasis on the search portion. So I basically want to shut everything off except an F10 map marker and be forced to navigate to that point, actually find the casualty and pick him up without any aids. No smoke, messages, or sounds until he is successfully picked up. Like I said, I already figured out the MGRS location in the F10 menu list but I need to add F10 marks for missions and remove them when picked up.

I haven't figured out when AAR would actually be useful in DCS outside of some canned CAP silliness. The maps are too small. The tankers are too dumb to be where you need them and who flies the fighters guarding the gas station? Of course, I only fly MP PvP and don't go for the milsim aspect at all, so I guess I miss out on all these AAR "opportunities". Auto AAR would be exactly like Rearm/Refuel on the ground. A game workaround that everyone accepts as required for gameplay. I don't see all the heartburn about adding it.

Seems like you would be happier building scale models instead playing this game.

I would suggest learning to navigate the old fashioned way. You start with dead reckoning, which is using speed, course and time to calculate where you are from a known beginning point. With dead reckoning, you make a flight plan and you fly according to the plan. And then there is pilotage, navigating by reference to what you see out the window. You choose landmarks on the map and then fly referencing those landmarks. In reality, you use the two methods together as a crosscheck. Pick a landmark. Decide you want to approach it from the south and leave it going north west. This will teach you the concept of bearings or “radials” to and from a position. Practice intercepting various bearings both to and from a visual point using only what you see and the compass. All of that will lay the groundwork for radio navigation (TACAN/VOR/NDB) INS is very simple. It is dead reckoning by a machine. You tell it where it is and it attempts to keep track of your speed and heading over time. If you tell it a coordinate it can point to that coordinate from where it thinks it is. https://www.cnatra.navy.mil/training/assets/media/navigation/nav-trainee-guide.pdf

You still haven’t told us what you want it to do. There is no way to help you if you are not more specific. The horizontal situation indicator (HSI) is not a blended navigation system as you seem to imply. It is a vertical card compass with a bearing pointer and a course needle built on top. It sure beats having the compass separate from the needles but it isn’t driven by an FMC. The bearing pointer and course needle can be driven by various inputs and each input requires that you understand its function and limitations or you will be frustrated.

Purpose of "Start alignment" Jester command
=475FG= Dawger replied to Stickler's topic in DCS: F-4E Phantom
I have not been successful in getting a proper re-alignment during rearm/refuel so a method to tell the clown to align the INS during refueling would be awesome. -
The major issue in this thread is a lack of understanding of some very basic mechanical and navigation knowledge. The INS is just a mechanical version of dead reckoning navigation. That is ALL it does. The HSI is actually many components You can’t just say “the HSI doesn’t do X” and expect an intelligent response Which component isn’t doing what you expect? Only then can someone tell you why For Example: Bearing pointer not pointing at INS fix? Bearing Distance Selector knob not rotated to Nav Comp. Aircraft manuals are not written in order to teach navigation. It is assumed you possess the knowledge already. Explain in detail what you are expecting to happen and I am sure someone can tell you why it isn’t. Of course, be prepared for answers like “ that isn’t how it works “

Still not needed and will be abused unless it is ‘blind’ as you suggest, in which case, PC should not waste time developing a cyber-idiot that will only annoy people and do nothing useful. That’s already been accomplished by others.

The only way that works is for the AI CPG to auto-spot targets, making the module basically a cheat mode. Easier to just show enemies on the map if the Reconnaissance Helo auto-spots enemy targets. Its easy enough to fly and run the MMS without ever using the AI pilot. No need to make a magic spotter.
-
So you want the AI to run the MMS instead of hold a perfect hover while you run the MMS and shoot off weapons and the like?
-
Please no. I am happy to have a competent and non-annoying AI pilot grab the controls in the Kiowa. No need for anything resembling the “clown”.
