  1. I feel all servers should be noob friendly... that is, don't expect to score a ton of victories, rather go in with expectations that you will learn from your mistakes. Fly a sortie, figure out what happened and if you don't know exactly what happened, run the replay. There is a free program that helps review flight data called tacview... it is essential if your goal is learning. I'm not positive about the state of the servers, however I run DCS independently. The reasoning being is that some modules DO NOT work with steam. Don't get me wrong I love steam and streamlining everything is an attractive prospect, but unfortunately DCS integration into steam is not a "current" experience. The DLC's frequently go on sale... usually whenever there is not development news you'll see a bunch of sales being thrown around. Usually there are bundles where you can save 10-20 USD and sometimes I see like %40 off and such. I think there is usually a summer sale, and I believe there are some packages on sale now. As far as I know DCS is the only modern depiction of the P-51... your next best hope would be IL-2, but they have stated they are moving forwards with Kuban and then Midway... no 51's there. My best advice would be to save up (or splurge) on the Normandy map/Assets pack and install the standalone DCS 2.1. A word of caution this product is in Alpha, so developments are always incoming, but problems do exist... DCS can be for casual players, but it is not a casual game. Expect to blow your engine when pursuing a 109, or induce a asymmetric wing stall when trying to evade the Dora; expect to damage or destroy yourself with dropped ordnance when flying too low, to strafe yourself into the ground, but also, if you're an open person, expect to meet some really charming and knowledgeable people, laugh and learn from your mistakes, and have some great fun! This is the best community there exist for this type of flight simulation experience. period.
  2. Yea the AI isn't great, but it would be unwise to ignore that the 109K is a late model WWII fighter and the 51D is an earlier model. There are many discussions on this issue, however there are human pilots online that kick butt in a 51. SO... mostly AI and lack of any damage model. You'll also notice AI flights don't employ any classic ACM, they just become single AI entities.
  3. Check out the BF server as they ambitiously try to simulate and entire conflict. The current server is a work in progress as they prepare for an official "round." There are sam-sites independent of Airports and Farps and the Helo guys can build new sam-sites anywhere, which are now persistent on server restart! Do yourself a favor though, before you join up, grab SRS which utilizes the cockpit radios in game... I'll drop a link to the page here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=169387
  4. SO if you look VERY closely at the tacview, it looks like you launched both R-3S at the same time and they collide midair. Make sure you select station 1 or 2 not 1-2 and bind a HOTAS function to CW and CCW on the station select...
  5. I love the new statistics page, it would be cool to see a most used aircraft column too! As for flight times and fuel, I have always felt very limited in the Mirage, especially during those Beslan sorties after flying from Tiblsi area. I remember reading somewhere that during the Korean War the Sabres would fly a decent amount of time to only have ~15 minutes of playtime in the AO. Its an interesting mechanic, because it enforces staggering reinforcements (more teamwork), afterburner discipline, and more meaning to each life (less airquake). I also learned the hard way (several times) that bingo means "go home now".
  6. I don't see a problem with moving the Mirage to Red only, along with the Viggen (as the harrier fulfills a similar role.) The sides may resemble America v. Europe, but that might be a welcomed change from Russia v. World.
  7. Noticed spectator mode is enabled in the current build....
  8. W Hat would be nice is a way to create a "package" and only drawings from that package would be seen... that way the map doesn't get over populated. also lines or arrows....
  9. As well as that some people dislike the FC3 modules, in general. I'm a VR player and I wont touch an FC3 aircraft, unless I really really have to... or its a SU-25T (soft spot)... The reason is, simply, I can't click the cockpit with my VR cursor and therefore would have to map all functions and buy a braille keyboard...
  10. I was flying in the Mirage just behind a Su-25T launching its antiradation missiles and said missiles appeared on my radar as contacts, which i guess makes sense but when interrogated IFF they displayed as friendly contacts. Not sure you guys are aware of this, as I've never seen this happen before. Anyway, it happened in 1.5 stable.
  11. Yea, in ME you un-check dispersion, I remember seeing that moving vehicles cause lag, hence the heads up.
  12. Noticed some ROE of SAMs at Blue airfields (namely Sukhumi (sp)) are set to Hold Fire. Also noticed that ground units disperse when under fire. Not sure if this is intended behavior.
  13. Especially without a properly functioning collimator sight, that's all but useless (in VR at least...)
  14. I'm not the biggest fan of cgi, as most who don the role forget strikers exist along with what objectives have to be met in order to fulfill the victory condition. At the same time it seems to be the only incentive for people to communicate... For that reason alone the slot should be kept, regardless of "double boxing." I'm not sure how many people actually do cheat, by the way. I believe the claims to be a bit inflated, as ego is often injured when bested by another. I feel like the mirages radar sees more than cgi anyway, as I find myself always reporting contacts to the response of, "nothing on scope" from Magic. As for data-link, (and as a blue player) I say enable it, who cares. The A-10 has a similar function and we don't debate that. Besides if you need those bells and whistles to be effective, don't expect to win too many sorties. However, I would imagine such a change would encourage less comms traffic, which seems to be an issue already considering the recent influx of new comers and more clique-like behavior from squadrons (not all squadrons, but come game time, I would hope everyone is at least monitoring the general channel...) And that brings us full circle. Any change that would result is less communication and less teamwork (required) is likely not a great design choice. Cheers!
  15. Yeah, I mean that seems a bit, i dunno... not intended... In the meantime, I've just been trying to setup SP mission where the general coord. are known but not the precise location and adapting on the fly. I think the intent of the gracious BF curators is to have multiple spawn layouts. This may be an incorrect assumption though. I feel variation as airfields respawn removes some issues, including buildings spawning inside destroyed buildings, and keeps the attackers on their toes. Some stationary buildings would be nice though, for air-frames like the viggen, that are designed for strike as opposed to CAS.
  16. Is the AGM-88 HARM going to be modeled... wait, I thought this was the Harrier thread, my bad.
  17. I feel like having a recon chopper or TGP capable striker helps a bit in getting these coordinates. But the Viggen, which I have been learning and loving recently, was designed with fixed targets in mind (and ships). Trying to hit AAA with a BK90 is a little silly, but maybe houses, stationary SAMs (i.e.SA-3's) bunkers, and fuel tanks should have no variation in placement and available coordinates via some sub menu or on the app. In fact if there were variation in placement but GPS was available via CTLD or something that would work too. I also very much enjoy the HD bomblets and running in on an SA-3 site, which I pulled off once out of 77 times... practice makes progress. I hope we get some love with a BK90 MP adjustment and Roadside re-arm fix. I also noticed rockets and Rb-05 seem to have been weakened. Anyway, cheers mate.
  18. It seems there are some issues with fuel (WIP), where kobeleti and kutasi seem to have been very low on fuel for two days at this point... Also my previous statement about rearming the viggen was a bit premature. The function seems to work, but nothing actually gets placed back on the plane. This is a Heatblur problem at the have stated they are working on a fix. https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=185826&page=5 . Is refueling an airbase via chopper working? I tried this earlier and was able to launch one mirage and one F-15 (another player) from Kutasi before the base was out of fuel again. However I'm not sure if this was due to the chopper drop or a timed respawn of fuel.
  19. The Viggen start at Ambrolauri is a bit forward of the area where rearm can be preformed. Might be easier to move the "crew" vehicle to the east somewhere between 50-100 meters... its probably easier to pull up to the truck rather than reverse to it. However, knee-board rearm is working!
  20. I can also confirm this, if you need a track, i have a 35 min track with an engagement at the ~30 mark with 2 kills. one was counted air one was counted ground. one kill was S530 one was Magic. The Su-27 remained in cockpit until uncontrolled flight into terrain. This maybe the cause, because technically he was destroyed on the ground? Also, Dino Might, how could you do a damaged bird like that? heartless...
  21. One suggestion, and this may have already been discussed, would be to only require airfields and farps be 100% one fraction for a victory condition. I am very excited that things are being worked on! You guys have done a great job and have really utilized the full potential of DCS! Thank you!
  22. Seems there are some weird boxes being generated around the cockpit lights with the new lighting in 2.1. It is especially noticeable around the auto pilot indicators and altitude alarm. Anyway, I'm sure you guys are aware of this, but communication leads to greater SA! Cheers!
  23. I had a situation once where i locked a confirmed enemy and then sent a fox 1. A friendly, in a most unfortunate fashion, trying to saddle said enemy, flew into the flight path of the missile and ended up being destroyed. I only learned of this by replaying the track and then reviewing the tacview of the replay. Of course, the guy wasn't on comms either, which frankly helps immensely with confirming FoF. I believe, irl pilots are not allowed to rely on IFF alone, unless there is some verbal confirmation that their target is a bandit, and not just a bogey. Tacview is free and helps understand mistakes made... and further more, understand wacky 1/1000000 things that could have gone wrong. Being on comms and communicating with other pilots in the area provides better SA in order to be more certain your target is a hostile.
  24. Maybe not even a full farp as choppers and STOL planes could rearm from a road-side setup. I'm not entirely sure, but I wonder if you can alter the stores for the included road-side team included with the Viggen so that choppers could rearm at them as well. Getting troops from one of these locations might be a bit OP but rearm/refuel would allow a helo pilot to drop troops and then refit for support. This system would also make the Viggen incredibly dangerous! I think the BF team is already trying to implement roadside rearm/refuel, BTW.
  25. I fly the P-51D with a group of great gents on Sundays and hop on BF quite a bit, so i very much understand the contrast. Although, still a novice, I've been learning more and more, and this has led me to an interesting revelation. While prop driven combat is a battle of energy, Modern jet combat is a battle of energy and distance control. Its the addition of distance and closure that I've been focusing on in my sessions, as this very closely resembles the sport of fencing (or I guess any martial art, but I used to fence competitvely.) There are also some other aspects of strategy that one most take into account before the engagement begins, because after is usually too late. The other night I was a single ship egress from the AO due to my fuel state. I, in a mirage, was being chased by 2 mig-29s and without using my afterburner (because of low fuel state,) I knew they would catch me. So I dove to a valley and broke right while popping flares and with a lit after burner. After my burst stopped, I chopped the throttle and reversed my direction with a Spilt-S. I followed the valley for 60 second or so, without emitting with my radar (as it would give away my position). I turned towards the last known location of the two ship and climbed in full burn, after another 20 seconds or so I flipped my radar on, achieved lock and took out the 2nd Mig. I'm sure he had no idea what hit him. The flight lead did take notice and turned back on me. I dove back into the Caucasus mountains and egressed to Sochi for rearm and refueling. After reviewing the tacview replay the flight lead had tried to follow me through the valleys after the engagement but was caught by a friendly ingressing to the AO. But the tactic worked; drawing the Migs off to the north with pretty lights whilst flanking on their southern side. I'm not very good, but that was a very good moment. Modern jets aren't better or worse than their ancestors (gameplay wise), rather they open up different tactics which makes the whole flight and fight more challenging!
